Here
we
have
a
good
example
of
what
happened
to
the
great
Portuguese
monasteries,
with
the
extinction
of
religious
orders
in
1834,
in
which
the
Portuguese
state
(at
the
time
a
constitutional
Monarchy)
to
finance
itself
after
bankruptcy
(the
country
had
gone
through
the
devastating
Napoleonic
invasions,
followed
by
a
devastating
civil
war),
they
nationalized
all
these
properties
and
in
most
cases
sold
them
at
public
auction.
In
this
case,
the
Monastery
and
the
coutos
of
Maceira
Dão
became
part
of
the
municipality
of
Mangualde.
According
to
Wikipedia,
in
the
1960s,
the
complex
was
acquired
by
a
family
from
Pombal,
with
no
resources
for
its
administration...
unfortunately
it
can
be
seen,
and
the
monastery
is
increasingly
in
ruins!
Regrettably,
as
it
would
make
beautiful
hotel
accommodation,
once
properly
rehabilitated!
Buildings
like
this,
which
are
classified
as
national
monuments,
should
be
properly
managed
by
the
State!
