From Katavi there's little to prepare one for the huge contrast that awaits arrival in Mahale. It's a short flight due north west over the Mahale Mountains to a small airstrip on the edge of Lake Tanganyika followed by a motorised dhow for another 90 minutes down to Kangwena beach. This is Greystoke Mahale - nearest road point is 100km away. Lake Tanganyika is the largest body of freshwater in Africa, a mile deep (second deepest in the world), with around 50 incoming rivers and one outgoing, a pH of around 8 and no algal growth, its waters are crystal clear - the colour of gin! Bounded by Congo jungle on its opposite shore, the Greystoke side has this great towering Mahale range rising up around 2500m to Nkungwe Peak. This is a seriously dramatic beach spot - white beaches, clear fresh waters and verdant forests. Get this place on your bucket list!!

The elephant exhibit here is so fun! It has a pool area and a fun environment for the elephants. You can see Nani (the youngest elephant) playing with her family! The place is well maintained seeing as it looks so clean! They have signs all over the place and even some little chimes and drum toys for children to learn more about where the elephants originated from. There is even some buttons so they can hear what it sounds like. Great atmosphere for the family or even just people who would like to watch the elephants on their shaded benches.

We had a fantastic 4 night visit to Mahale. We stayed at the park bandas and while basic, they had everything we needed. Each Banda has two beds, bathroom with hot water. You are surrounded by the forest and animals including baboons, bush pigs, birds and monkeys. We arranged for a chef in advance (Saudi). He was an EXCELLENT cook, very friendly and always prompt. Peter Robinson, our guide helped us arrange transport, chef, hotel in Kigoma and also guided us all four days to see the chimps, which were amazing. While we could have stayed in5-star comfort a mile down the trail, I wouldnโ€™t have traded our experience and opportunity to spend four magical days with Peter and the team at Mahale. Highly recommend!
