Museum of Sydney is a small museum located close to harbor. It offers some interesting collection of arts and history of Sydney, NSW, and Australia. Free entry on weekend with friendly staff. They offer old movies from Sydney which makes the visit really amazing and full of insights over the development of Sydney over years. While not comparable with Power-house or Australian Museum, still full of some interesting pieces of history and evolution of Sydney. 1h is enough to explore the museum. Recommended!

This is a must visit location. You could easily spend the day here discovering all sorts of interesting exhibition's. Plenty of educational resources for yourself and family. A great place to learn more about the history of our wonderful planet and the diversity it has to offer. There are always new updated exhibition's to discover.

As far as museums go I would rate this 1/10. There are 2 small floors of exhibits. One includes a tv show about native culture and some model boats. The second is an artist's outfits on models. Genuinely no artifacts or physical historical items here. Would not waste $15

Really small museum, not a lot of info. There is a section about the First Fleet which was interesting, then some info on the first governors mansion on which the site stands. Then upstairs there are information boards about some of the local people & tribes who were there when the British arrived, but not much about their history. Nothing about the development of the city over the years which is a shame. There are a couple of art spaces which are really good but seem out of place in a city museum

This is the most see museum, which is close to the Sydney Harbor. There is no cost for the entrance, the building itself off three-story, and you can see a wide range of displays. Nice bathrooms, but only on the ground floors. There are several theaters where you can watch about how, the harbor was built all the city itself was designed 🏛️ The Museum of Sydney is a captivating journey through the city's rich history and culture! With interactive exhibits and fascinating artifacts, it offers an immersive experience for all ages. Exploring the museum with family and friends is a great way to spend a day, as it provides valuable insights into Sydney's past and present. Don't miss this cultural gem on your next visit to the city! 🏙️🗺️ #MuseumOfSydney #HistoryAndCulture #MustVisit

Free to the public, has a few great films and other historical reference to the city, including the world renowned Opera House. Be sure to watch the 3-5 minute film at the entrance, and leave a small appreciation note or drawing before you leave.

Museum of Sydney had a really great exhibition about the Sydney Opera House. I liked the Lego Opera House and the other diaramas. It was also free entry. A worthy stop if you are in the nearby Circular Quay.

Had a great experience here with the kids. The guide at the entrance was very engaging and obviously passionate about the museum and it’s history. The first floor dealt with the Government house and the second floor had some separate exhibitions which were both interesting. We were really happy with the experience.

Its a modern museum that is build on and around the sites of the 1st Government house. Great place to spend your time on the introduction of Sydney’s history and culture. Take the opportunity on a history trip as free admission on the weekends till end of Jun22

The name doesn't actually give any indication of what you will find there. More or less, it's a highly condensed collection of recent historically items from Sydney, with a concentration on the first government house (the museum's original location) and related legacy. Sincerity, I was stunned! Definitely Sydney history, nature related is far richer than these. Once more, the museum doesn't really emphasize anything about indigenous people, their ancestry, or how they helped create the Sydney we see today. Although I learned that admission is free on weekends, even this shouldn't be enough to entice people to go. Avoid wasting time.

Great free activity. There’s a Sydney opera house exhibit with a detailed Lego replica. I learned a lot about the first fleet and they had detailed miniatures of each ship. It was a really informative experience.

The museum is pretty small, but has lots of interesting things. The staff is unbelievably knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. It will probably take 1 hour to see everything. Also, I bought a book and, unlike other museums, it was not overpriced

I would really recommend this place if you are interested in knowing about the history of Australia then go for it. When we visited the place then it was celebrating 50 years of Opera House and had a video going which had some history about it. You can learn about history and start of Australia. 🇦🇺 it was an amazing experience and worth going there. Not a very big place and can be covered in 30 mins if you are not covering all the videos.

Welcomed by employees at information desk. They explained it's tiny building, fair enough. I don't have to book from website (I don't want to) and it's ok to visit *walk in. Surprise it's free of charge. 2nd floor mostly information about the Opera House. There is lift for easy access. Toilets are clean, it's important for me. Anyway, good enough to see around and spend time near Circular Quay area.

Pleasantly surprised that entrance was free. I really enjoyed sitting down and watching the various documentaries, particularly the one about the Opera House. It was so nice and chill on the lounge in a Sydney themed living room!

  • 3/5 Philippe De D. 4 years ago on Google
Disappointing museum, mostly because it is so small! Their website makes the visit seems worth it, but the website is more complete than the exhibits on the premises. For instance, as for the first fleet there are the 11 miniature boats (no pictures please!) and nothing else. The 30 minute guided tour was fine and earns the visit the third star. Look at the website, learn more, and save yourself 15 AUD.

I somehow expected rather more info on Sydney, on the history and tons of more info about the Aboriginals. 90% of floorplace is dedicated to the last 200 years and one from to the 40 000 years before that. And then having a dedicated room on a guest exhibition, photos of buildings form all around the world, I think I'm not sure about the concept of the museum.

15$ for a small museum was a little too much. For me, this isn't a must place to go. You can skip it if you'd like. However, this museum does have a fair share of history that you might want to know about Sydney. It was interesting, nonetheless. Hence, 3/5.

Nice museum. I found the cost for entry a bit high for how small I thought the museum was. Watched the short film of Australian history in one of the rooms which I found to be good. A few exhibits that were good for the little ones. Would definitely check out some new museums before heading back again.

Small museum with history of Sydney.. The highlights were the models of the first fleet vessels. Such intricate details of these models... Wish I could buy a miniature version of these... The section with the maps of Sydney and how it's changed over the time war also pretty interesting.... Disappointed coz did want to go to the rooftop restaurant but got late... Maybe next time

A small local history museum of Sydney. It keeps parts of the first governor’s house to tell how Sydney cove established. And tell tell the story about the aboriginal people first time contact with Europeans. There’s a special exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sydney Opera House. Remarkable!

Wonderful museum. Kids (4 and 2) loved the play area, and the dinosaur exhibition was amazing. We went on a Friday around lunchtime, so it was very busy, also due to the holiday period. But even though it was busy, it was great. Lifts are super quick, so getting around with a pram was easy. Lots of interactive activities for the kids. They had a volunteer our with a few pieces of coral for the kids to touch.

What a wonderful exhibition celebrating our Australian Icon, the Sydney Opera House! Full of posters and costumes from many different performances over the last 50 years. Not to mention, the fantastic figures of the Opera House. I am so happy that I got to see this exhibition before it finished.

Free to the public, you probably need around 30min to walk around; longer if you want to go deep into the exhibits. There is a Sydney Opera House as a part of pop culture culture exhibit. You won’t be able to miss this landmark when in Sunday, and the curators did an amazing job with such collection. I appreciated three pieces by a contemporary aboriginal artist located on the first floor, their vision of the first Fleet coming to Sydney. There are some interactive rooms as well.

Well organized and well maintained Museum wherein you can know all about Sydney from its origin. Front desk officials are quite friendly. On the first floor the gallery has record of great musicians who had performed in the concerts. You can get a simple gadget with earphones using which you can listen to the songs sung by those great musicians. This is complementary when one buys an entry ticket to visit museum and of course this needs to be returned at the time of exit. Recommended attraction while in Sydney.

Lovely little museum, very kid and family friendly with multiple activities to keep little ones busy. Also excellent and informational with a theatre room and ongoing documentaries being played on rotation. Nice variety of items on display, from photographs to sculptures, artifacts and other segments of info surrounding the Sydney Opera house, the first fleet, Aboriginal and indigenous history as well as plenty more! They do have varying exhibits depending on months so be sure to check their website for more information. I attended the John Gollings: the history of the built world, which was incredibly fascinating to see the way in which architecture around the world has evolved and pushed the boundaries from ancient civilizations to modern and contemporary, even abstract buildings. I definitely recommend!

Staff members are so so lovely and helpful and the man on the door was very knowledgable! It’s is located over 2 main floors and mainly depicts the colonisation and history of Australia. There are lot of photographs and stories explaining the history but it is slightly lacking artefacts and objects. There is a fun room at the moment where you can write on the walls in chalk, it’s called ‘My City Is...’ I also enjoyed the room with the moving artwork that tells a story throughout a day, it’s also good fun for the kids as you can sit on the artificial grass and the children can play under the bridge and lanes.

We came to see Jurassic world exhibition today. After 1 hour waiting line of frustrated people from long waiting we got to the counter where we were pushing to get membership. We didn’t want any; we finally got ticket, not fun waiting with baby or kids. Then you go to other line waiting for another long time. You see people giving up and lots of crying kids that didn’t make it to see exhibition. We made it to entry after couple hours and our baby needed to go sleep. Not recommending on the weekend with baby otherwise museum is great. Just the waiting and pushing you the membership kinda wracked the spirit of enjoy the visit.

Tiny museum, but very pleasant. Informative video installation about the early years after the landing of European colonizers in Australia.
