The Cathedral Church and Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians (colloquially, St Mary's Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney and the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney, currently Anthony Fisher OP. It should not be confused with the nearby, later, Anglican St Andrew's Cathedral. It is dedicated to the "Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians", Patroness of Australia and holds the title and dignity of a minor basilica, bestowed upon it by Pope Pius XI on 4 August 1932.St Mary's has the greatest length of any church in Australia (although it is neither the tallest nor largest overall). It is located on College Street near the eastern border of the Sydney central business district in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. Despite the high-rise development of the central business district, the cathedral's imposing structure and twin spires make it a landmark from every direction. In 2008, St Mary's Cathedral became the focus of World Youth Day 2008 and was visited by Pope Benedict XVI who consecrated the new forward altar. The cathedral was designed by William Wardell and built from 1866 to 1928. It is also known as St Mary's Catholic Cathedral and Chapter House, Saint Mary's Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 3 September 2004.Sydney was established as a penal settlement on 26 January 1788 in the name of King George III by Captain Arthur Phillip, for prisoners transported from Britain. Many of the people to arrive in Sydney at that time were military, some with wives and family; there were also some free settlers. The first chaplain of the colony was the Reverend Richard Johnson of the Church of England. No specific provision was made for the religious needs of those many convicts and settlers who were Roman Catholics.

St Mary's Cathedral is probably my favourite "go-to" Cathedral in Sydney of all time. It is truly an extraordinary and historic place to visit. The view from the outside astonishes me. It is one marvellous and mesmerising piece of Gothic architecture, both inside and out, a must-see masterpiece! Words cannot describe how beautiful it is. The interior is just as spectacular. Not only are you surrounded by the scintillating and richly decorated mosaic stained glass windows, the ornate design of the altar and devotional objects, but the statues are also so meticulously carved and well-developed. Everything is remarkably preserved from top to bottom wherever you turn, packed with memorable moments in history. If you are in Sydney, you must come and visit this place. Believe me, you are in for a treat. Happy exploring! ✮

Visiting St. Mary's Cathedral was an absolutely enchanting experience. The cathedral exudes a sense of history and grandeur that's truly captivating. Among the many remarkable features, the stained glass windows stood out as the highlight of my visit. The stained glass windows in St. Mary's Cathedral is nothing short of breathtaking. They tell intricate stories through vibrant colors and beautifully crafted scenes, and they fill the interior with a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of light. Each window felt like a work of art, a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists who created them. The experience of being surrounded by such divine illumination and intricate artistry was truly awe-inspiring. It's no wonder that St. Mary's Cathedral is considered a treasure trove of beauty and history. If you ever find yourself in Sydney, I highly recommend a visit to this magnificent place. It's a journey into both the spiritual and artistic heritage of the city.

Beautiful chapel! You can tour the outside and inside. The outside has a nice man-made pond and view of the buildings peaks. While inside you have the mosaic glass, statues, and ripped for worship. I came during Christmas so they also had a Christmas tree.

St Mary's Cathedral Sydney is a beautiful and impressive Gothic Revival cathedral that is the spiritual home of Sydney's Catholic community. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city, on College Street, and is a popular tourist destination. The cathedral was built in the 19th century and is made of sandstone. It has a long nave, a high ceiling, and two tall spires. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with stained glass windows, marble pillars, and a beautiful pipe organ. St Mary's Cathedral is a place of worship for Catholics, but it is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors can admire the cathedral's architecture, learn about its history, and attend mass. The cathedral is also a popular venue for concerts and other events.

The first thing that compelled me to visit St. Mary's Cathedral Church was its magnificent design and architectural grandeur. I was captivated by the sheer beauty of the building, and as someone eager to learn more about Christianity, I was particularly drawn to explore its interior. Let me tell you, this Church is truly one of the most remarkable I have ever encountered! Stepping inside, I was instantly overwhelmed with indescribable emotions. The atmosphere and aura of the place were simply awe-inspiring. The serenity and reverence that permeated the air created a profound sense of peace within me. It was a deeply moving experience that words fail to adequately capture. It's something that needs to be personally experienced at least once in a lifetime. I want to extend my gratitude to the staff of the church for warmly welcoming visitors from all religious backgrounds. Their openness and inclusivity truly embody the spirit of unity and understanding. It's commendable that they encourage people of diverse faiths to come and explore this sacred place. In conclusion, my visit to St. Mary's Cathedral Church was a transformative and unforgettable experience. From its breathtaking architecture to the profound sense of spirituality inside, it exceeded my expectations in every way. I urge everyone to take the opportunity to visit this exceptional place and discover its beauty for themselves.

I visited this beautiful cathedral earlier this month. The place is beautiful and divine. When you walk in, the buzzing city is behind and you’re in a sanctuary of peace. Simply sitting down and soaking up the vibe will transport you to another world. At the moment, they have beautiful flower gardens at the front square. Well worth a visit while you’re in the city.

Incredible landmark to visit in Sydney. If you have a chance to pass near Hyde Park, it is good to get closer to take a photo of it. This Cathedral is so gorgeous. If you are religious or not, you should make it a point to check out the Cathedral. It is also a famous wedding photo place. The cathedral really took my breath away, very beautiful in the details. There are plenty of food trucks around to grab something to eat. Close to public transportation as well. Fantastic architecture, it's a must go place in the Sydney's city tour. Reasonable walk and enjoy the scenes inside and outside of the church. Highly recommend to anyone !

Eye catching Gothic style cathedral next to Hyde Park. It is open to the public (no entrance fee although donations are welcome) and a very popular venue for weddings/photos. The stained glass windows inside are beautiful. Well worth a visit whether you are religious or not. If you love history or architecture, the building, inside and out, offers lots of interesting discoveries. The cathedral opens at 6:30am each morning, closing to the public at 6:30pm during the week and at 7pm on weekends. There is a free guided tour on Sundays at 2pm.

Awesome place. No words to express the feelings. If you are visiting Sydney, this place is a must watch spot. It is peaceful and vibrant. There are pictures of Jesus's story on the walls and many worship places within the cathedral. It's really breathtaking. Even the walk towards the Cathedral, you can see a great fountain with characters of biblical references. We visited during the Christmas New Year period, and therefore, we also got to see the Christmas decorations and crib.

It's a beautiful old styled church. It's made of old rock with beautifully reflected painted glass windows from inside. The mass is every Sunday at 1030 hrs. It's a solemn mass with amazing choir. They provide a handbook with all prayers written as soon as you enter the church. During Christmas time you can attend the midnight mass as well. You can attend the mass even if you are not a member of this church. The pope of the church is wonderful and polite and friendly. Even if you are not here to attend the mass feel free to join the tour guide for free after the Sunday mass around 12 noon.

(Translated by Google) The cathedral located beside Hyde Park features high spires on both sides of the front, and when you went inside, you were overwhelmed by the majesty. There are many beautiful stained glass and a magnificent pipe organ. I was also interested especially the stained glass behind the altar was very beautiful. There are many statues of saints displayed on the walls. The room has a narrow frontage and a high ceiling for a magnificent building, so the depth is deep and I felt that the entrance to the altar was long. If you have time, why don't you visit and see it? The fountain statues in Hyde Park are worth a visit.

I loved my visit to St. Mary's - the open doors welcome all. The steps up to the entrance are quite amazing. St Mary’s Cathedral stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the Gothic Revival style of its architecture is reminiscent of the great medieval cathedrals of Europe. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians. Architect William Wilkinson Wardell was commissioned by Archbishop Polding to design a new St Mary’s following the fire of 1865 which ruined the original Cathedral. A visitor to St Mary’s will see many features on the outside of the building: the flying buttresses of the chancel and nave; the canopies and statues in the northern gable, the text of the Ave Maria and other invocations carved high up on the walls; the many carved saintly heads which gaze benignly down, and, way up on the towers and turrets, the more menacing figures of the gargoyles. Moving inside the church through the main doors, the eye is drawn forward, along the length of the nave, toward the white pinnacles of the High Altar Screen, and the rich colors of the Great North Window beyond.

I am an American tourist visiting Sydney for a few days. I first visited the Australian Museum, which is about 100 yards away from the St Mary's Cathedral. Having some time before my next engagement, I walked from the Australian Museum to the St Mary's Cathedral, which was made peaceful by a water feature and colorful flowers. People were sitting on the steps at mid-afternoon enjoying the view watching visitors enter and exit the cathedral. Admission to the Cathedral is free and is a good stop on a walking tour including Hyde Park, The Australian Museum, St Mary's Cathedral and the Domain/Art Gallery of NSW. Inside, there are many pews from which to choose if you want to pray and gorgeous stained windows. You can light a candle on your way out and admire the architecture.

The wedding ceremony of our son took place at St. Mary's Cathedral, and it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The enchanting chimes of the cathedral bells echoed in the background, accompanied by the melodic tones of the organs resonating within the sacred walls. We were truly blessed to capture such a precious moment during the ceremony.

Today St Mary’s Cathedral is one of Australia’s most beautiful and significant buildings but it did not happen overnight. The Cathedral evolved through a long and patient timeline following a fire which destroyed the first St Mary’s Cathedral in 1865. It took close to 100 years to finally complete St Marys with the first stage constructed between 1866 and 1900 and stage two between 1912 and 1928 As you approach the cathedral, you can't help but be impressed by its size and grandeur. The exterior is beautiful and intricate, with elaborate carvings and details that are a testament to the skill of the architects and artisans who designed and built it. One of the best things about St Mary's Cathedral is that it is free to visit. Inside, the cathedral is even more impressive. The soaring ceilings, beautiful stained-glass windows, and intricate designs make for a breathtaking space that is sure to leave you feeling awe-struck. The altar is especially impressive, with its ornate carvings and beautiful decorations.

St. Mary's Cathedral is a truly awe-inspiring landmark located in the heart of Sydney. As one of the largest and most beautiful churches in Australia, it never fails to impress visitors with its grandeur and beauty. From the moment you step inside the cathedral, you are transported to a place of peace and tranquility. The soaring ceilings and stunning stained glass windows create a sense of awe and wonder, while the intricate details of the architecture speak to the incredible skill and craftsmanship that went into its construction. But St. Mary's Cathedral is more than just a beautiful building - it is also a spiritual sanctuary, a place where people can come to reflect, pray, and find solace. Whether you are a devout Catholic or simply seeking a moment of quiet contemplation, St. Mary's Cathedral provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

(Translated by Google) I took a walk in Hyde Park in the morning and visited this St. Mary's Cathedral, which is right next to the park. The morning mass had just begun, so I attended the mass. Inside the building and in the mass, the word "solitude" is a perfect atmosphere, and I strictly observe the rule that photography inside is prohibited.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere was very good and it was just the main temple of the Catholic church! It was very wide and slow. (Original) とても雰囲気もよくカトリック教会の総本山というだけありました!とても広くゆっくりとできました。

Incredible landmark to visit in Sydney. The main church is expansive and the choir is fantastic. I’d really encourage people to attend one of the daily choral services to fully enjoy the incredible acoustic of this building. Likewise, the crypt downstairs is a beautiful space with a similarly delightful acoustic. There are occasionally concerts staged down here and they are always a delight.

The St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney is hard to miss. It's located right next to Hyde Park and the Archibald Fountain, with the Hyde Park Barracks, the Australian Museum and numerous other attractions close by. That said, the cathedral by itself dominates the surroundings, with its Gothic architecture and its twin spires the highlight. When we visited, it was evening and there were relatively few worshipers and visitors. The cathedral, from inside, was equally quiet and impressive. The stained glass windows were a particular highlight. The lighting was dim but sufficient and the place radiated spirituality and peace. It's a good place to visit; one can spend 30-45 minutes here; longer if one wishes to pray.

Look more like a scary castle rather than a church. Magnificent building one of many throughout Sydney area.

The Cathedral truly takes your breath away. The stunning presentation and architecture are noteworthy and draw one into prayer. If you are religious or not, you should make it a point to check out the Cathedral. My photos are from the Christmas light ceremony which was simply heavenly.

Great gothic style basilica cathedral dedicated to St Mary. The recent addition of an umbraculum has transformed this marvelous space. Second best ring of 12 bells in Sydney!
