Very Polite and understanding people. Nice and relax vibes in the hostel. Interesting and warm decoration and environment for relaxing, studying or working. I had some troubles with check-in and I delayed to check in but the receptionist was very polite and help full. I will definitely visit them again. :)

I was made to feel very welcome by Luis and everyone at the hostel, the space is really nice - open with lots of interesting items, plants and art to look at. Comfortable beds, amazing kitchen, good showers and a great location - close to the metro and beach. Would recommend you to stay here!

Nice hostel with very friendly host and staff. Louis really wants you to have a good time. Big common space where you can hang out. It is very easy to get to know others. True, it can be a bit noisy from the common space but on the other side it's nice to sit together in the evening and meet people.

I would recommend this place. The service is personal, and the rooms are stylish. The other occupants are young and friendly. Everyone is polite and considerate. The location is 5 mins walk to the beach. There's lots of restaurants around. The only negative is it can be quite dark inside because the windows are small. Otherwise, it is a nice place.

The owner was great and very helpful with showing me around and making suggestions for what to do in the town. The walls are very thin. You can hear everything from everywhere. There is a guy who is always there who isnā€™t an employee but acts as one which is very confusing for the guests. I also had issues with no one ever being at the reception desk to get help. The rules states that there is someone at the reception from 8:30am to 10pm. This was not the case. I needed to shower around 8 pm but couldn't get a towel because no one was working so I wasnā€™t able to shower. I needed to checkout around 11 am and again there was no one working to talk to about storing my luggage there and if I needed to do anything to checkout. Once I got back from surfing yet again there was no one working. I had my friend with me who was staying in the city and we needed to rinse off from surfing before we headed back to the city. We rinsed off in the shower then grabbed a bite to eat. Once we got back from eating we were told we were going to have to pay for another night since my friend took a shower. This was absolutely absurd as there was no one working to ask if she could shower and at any other hostel this wouldā€™ve been perfectly fine. There is no reason I shouldā€™ve gotten charged another 20 euros because of a shower. Really disappointed with this experience and I would not recommend to anyone as they are not accommodating and no one is ever working. They just want your money and it is not a safe place especially for solo female travelers. The room was spacious and had lockers. There was not a lock on the door which I did not like as a solo female traveler. Anyone at any point could walk right into my room. The front door to get into the building was wide open majority of the time I was there. Did not feel very safe as anyone from the street could walk in and go directly into my room. Also the bathrooms were dirty and the water pressure wasnā€™t great. The lights in the bathroom also kept during off during the shower and there wasnā€™t any soap in the bathrooms.

I had the greatest and most special experience of my life staying here. The owners Luis and his son JoĆ£o are very good, efficient and helpful. I had an accident and cut myself shaving and was immediately treated with first aid. We had the power cut off due to a storm and Luis worked hard and solved the problem and even treated us to beers to celebrate the night. It was fantastic, they take care of the business with love in every detail. I highly recommend it, you feel like family!!! Clean, comfortable and friendly place! 100%

Extremely well put together hostel. It can be a little loud sometimes, but this had more to do with the guests (admittedly myself included) than the space. Very easy to feel at home in the cozy rooms and the large common space. The hostel served as a home to several long-term residents that were as varied and interesting as the hostel itself: a teacher, a chef, an opera singer, and several other remote workers. The short term guests were also friendly and outgoing. I think this is a testament to the culture that Luis has built at this hostel. This place is perfect for solo travelers looking to meet new people and try new things. It is quite close to the beach and several surf schools, and Luis also offers private lessons. Luis also has connections to a local BJJ gym where they offer beginner lessons in English and Portuguese, as well as standard lessons (Portuguese only). I would not recommend this place to someone looking to keep to themselves, only because they won't get as much out of this hostel. It is also not very close to city center if you want to take public transportation. However, ride shares are quite inexpensive. Caruma Surf Hostel offers a lively and social environment for a stay in Porto's best beach neighborhood. 10/10 will be staying again the next time I have a chance to come to Porto.

Perfect hostel for surfing but also just for staying there. The rooms are very big, bright and open. The beds are comfy and bathrooms are all clean. It is very tastefully decorated, so you can only feel good. Luis and his coworkers are very friendly, you can always ask them if you need something. If you go by metro, it will takes 40 minutes to Porto City. In Matosinhos you have a beautiful beach and lots of nice restaurants/cafĆ©s. I can highly recommend this hostel, one of the bests, Iā€˜ve ever been to!!

From beginning to end, my time at Caruma Hostel Surf has been amazing. What was supposed to be a one-week stay turned into one month of great people and incredible surfing. Luis (the owner) and Joao (his son) are extremely friendly and accommodating. Within five minutes of arriving, Luis was teaching me how to surf using a skateboard like Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid. No matter the time of day, Luis was always happy and friendly, which made the hostel's vibe great. Furthermore, because of the surf nature, the type of people staying here was great. Not once did I have a bad experience with any of the guests. Everyone was mature, friendly, and most importantly, respectful. The hostel is about a 2-minute walk from Matosinhos beach as well. So for those looking to surf, you can't find much better than this. All in all, after staying in plenty of hostels over the past five years, I can honestly say that my experience with Caruma Hostel has been one of the best. And you can bet that it won't be my last time staying either.

We received a warm welcome from Luis when we entered the hostel. The place is overall clean and spacious. I recommend this place to whoever wants to stay around Porto.

The owner refused to book us in because we are "non-European" and this was suspicious to him

Thanks to Luis the Owner of the House, he made us feel absolutely welcome in his Surfhouse, which honestly looks like an Atelier. We gave us Wetsuit& Board to use for free of charge& gave us amazing advise for future travel plans. Absolutely recommend for all kind of Travelers.

To avoid. Is extremely noisy, especially the night there is music and party in the reception and all the rooms can listen. It's a garage with some rooms and a big living room that's why is so noisy. We came at 3pm and the rooms weren't ready we had to wait 1 hour, and the check in was supposed to be at 3pm. Now I understand if the employees are awake all night, they can't clean a room the next day.

Exceptional hospitality from Luis, the person who puts his heart and soul into running the place. The premises are brand new, revitalised with class and style from a former art studio/sardines factory. The atmosphere of relaxed, natural human contact makes you feel immediately drawn into the mix of guests, who become rather like a social circle. Some stay for a short time, some become more of inhabitants. Beds are comfortable and large, it's clean and modern all over the place. Couldn't recommend this more. P.S. You don't need to be a surfer to receive a warm welcome. But if you do decide on some surfing lessons, Luis can provide personal advice and find you a class/teacher.
