The cardio area is super hot as well as some other parts of the gym. They have air conditioning but they simply decide to leave it off. If you send emails to management complaining, they'll simply ignore it and take no action. I only go to this because I have a discount with my health plan. Definitely not worth the expensive membership they charge. Moreover, the gym lacks enough equipment for peak hours. Every gym I know has 2 of the most used machines. Not sure why they haven't thought of that here. Whenever a machine breaks, be sure that it will take 3-4 weeks for it to be fixed...

I'm not really sure how to put this in writing. But on paper you pay 100 a month to get what you should. There's a sauna, steam, pool and hot tub. The staff are really friendly and attentative and listen to your needs. And there is free parking. This should be a five star review. In reality. The decor is old and dated even after a refurb. The gym is cramped and uncomfortable unless you go when it's quite. The best machine (cable row) was removed after the refurb. Its very difficult to get on a machine when it's busy. For example the 4 racks are mostly always busy with someone always waiting around to jump on as soon it's free. If you manage get on them, try your luck with the lottery. The staff begin to clean up the floor and locker rooms hours before closing time which is uncomfortable, noisy, intrusive and not really professional. I don't trust certain staff members when it comes to my property as well. No guess passes also. I once decided to come for an early morning work out when you would expect the gym to be ready and stocked. However I found empty tissue boxes, no overshoes (the one days I forgot my slippers) for the sauna area. A males long black hair all over the mirror and hairdryer and the steam room not working. My supposedly clean towel had stains and long hair all over it which makes the hygience of the towels questionable. This was the reason for this review and the last straw for me. Even though previously there has been other issues. The friendly staff made me restrain from writing this. As it's somewhere I do love. But I don't think it's value for money for most. At least once every few weeks something doesn't work. From the hot pool, the sauna, the steam room. Once I was having a shower and the lights turned off. The dryer sometimes doesn't work. The gym is cramped and people (as well as instructors) do workouts in the walking areas of the gym which makes it awkward and difficult to move around. One machine was down for weeks. Although positives are. If you go to the gym outside busy times. You can get your pick of limited machines, punch bags are available, you have a sauna, steam, hot tub and swimming pool. However for a 100 pound a month I feel they should at least send text updates of when certain things are not up and working. Especially the steam, sauna, hot tub and pool. People come here just for these. I brought a guess here on an open weekend who wanted to try out the hot tub and it was not working. I believe you lost a customer there. 2 stars is for friendly staff and facilities. If the gym wasn't priced high I don't think I would be as critical. Also parking can be tight at time. I've had someone scrape my car. And another person, in head to toe tattoos, walking on the road area threaten me because I was quietly frustrated he walking in front of me whilst I was driving. Also a lot of the time kids are in the swimming area or classes are running. And the sauna and steam area close 30 minutes before closing time, so that's something they should make member aware off. And no loyalty for staying a customer.

This is not a family club at all! I joined 10 years ago for the pure reason that children under a certain age can use the creche and swimming lessons without being members. They have now introduced a £13.50 charge per child of any age so they can pay to go to the creche or pay for swimming lessons! There is NOTHING for younger ones to do included in this! Particularly for under 5s! The soft play area is dirty and isn’t a soft play at all! It’s a corner of a room full of old donated toys with a broken TV. There aren’t any family changing facilities so if you have a boy over 7, you have to send them to the opposite side of the building, past a massive emergency exit which is often open to the car park and into a changing room - where there aren’t even any doors for privacy on the showers. This surely is a massive safeguarding concern which hasn’t been addressed! We were paying over £400 a month as a family when we added together 2 x gym memberships, swimming lessons, creche, food/drinks at the cafe as a family and they still want more on top. This is not what I originally signed up for and they have changed the terms of the contract… we are now in the process of moving over to Coletts - a real family club! Nuffield Management simply don’t care- so much so, they chose to shut the kids pool on New Years Day saying it was no kids for swimming that day and with no reason why! Turning away family after family - that clearly shows their priorities! I emailed to ask why and no one even bothered to respond!

Not fit for serious weight lifters and the price tag is ridiculous. Small, crowded gym with some essential equipment missing like weighted row machine, EZ bars, etc... I would think twice even if it was £30 a month.

By far the most incompetent gym I have ever been to. I have asked for equipment to be fixed for the past 3 years yet it’s never been done. The pool is closed regularly. The cleaning staff are always polite but the reception workers are rude and pretty much useless. You can go to another gym for half the price and almost certainly better equipment. I couldn’t even be paid to go here again.

Refurb. the. gym. I don’t think they’ve refurbed this place in 20 years. For the price you pay it should be nearing David Lloyd level. Gym floor is packed in peak times, insufficient amount of machines. Cracks on all the walls which I will be reporting to environmental health. Mens changing rooms are nasty, flies everywhere, showers not working properly. Jacuzzi always out of order 🙄. Buy a new one. Steam room always on a low temperature/malfunction. Machines don’t get repaired quick enough. Sort it out, members pay good money for these facilities.

    Great classes and friendly team.

Great classes, however overshadowed by disgraceful treatment of parents with young kids. Randomly demanded charging my 2year old membership to use crèche facilities so parents can use the gym!! Considering neighbouring gyms offer so much more and are free before 5years old, has I have known this as a n NHS worker just coming out of a pandemic I’d have chosen elsewhere.

I would like to add some pros and cons here. The gym is always clean and cleaning staff are working really good. There are couple of nice staff people in the counter that they try to help. The classes seems always overbooked and the membership fee is quite high. The number of equipment per number of the customers have no balance. It seems the membership system that they have, it has always issues and staff people are not able to take out the history. In some occasions I found some staff are not friendly and did not help in a kind way and even found one of them very aggressive and that has been disappointing for such a place for leisure. Good staff is a key element and attraction point for the customers and it is hoped the management of this high profile gym to have a look in this.

My partner has been a member for over 5 years, know the place well. We joined on a friends and family discount. Last year in the summer my membership was cancelled randomly - we called up whilst at a different branch and they stated I had cancelled, when I have my vulnerable daughter on my account whom I like to take swimming etc. They realised I had not suspended/deactivated my account. THEY DEACTIVATED MY ACCOUNT WITHOUT CONSENT. At £105 a month it is NOT worth it. Before having my daughter I was with David Lloyd Clubs & I paid £20/£30 more! The spa facilities are terrible, you have to ring up to make sure they are open - whereas when I joined DL they are 100x better than any Nuffield I have been to. If you would like to join a good class gym, join David Lloyds, much more reliable and you can ensure you are paying a fitting price for your membership!

Ever since they reopened they have been awful about kids coming in. I get they need to claw back money, but the way they go about it while also raising monthly fees has been woeful. To top it off, one of the staff behind the desk is needlessly abrupt and rude whenever we turn up as a family makes the kids feel unwelcome. Never a smile! Most of the other staff on the desk are lovely and understanding though. Sent a message to manager to raise some issues and hasn't even responded after 3 weeks! Think it's time to cancel membership after 4 years! Shame.

Very disappointed with the club's reception staff, been given incorrect information several times now resulting in messing up my invaluable leisure time, unfriendly faces and attitude. The cafe is always short staffed and regular notices up informing customers the kitchen is closed. I'm guessing they don't get paid much but this shouldn't reflect on the customers who pay close to £100 per month to use the facilities! After all they choose to do this job... Please Nuffield, sort your staff out, or at least train them, I'm not the only one complaining!

I have been a member for last four years and over the last six months have noticed dramatic deterioration is the standard. When things go wrong it takes weeks on end to fix. For example, the lift has been out of action for last eight weeks. Poor front desk staff have to keep giving excuses but it is the management that should deal with these issues. There are a number of items that need urgent attention. The level of cleanliness has deteriorated to an extent that I am seriously considering moving to different gym.The machines are covered in layers of dust, the changing rooms are unhygienic to describe it politely. The management and the head office need to get grips with the situation if they are interested in my membership. Vasant

I never ever put bad review on anything but this time is very different!!!!!!! I did sign up my daughter for Surbiton branch but any time I took her there they said she can't use gym or swimming pool etc!!!!!!! Why? Because in the past she attended some dancing club in there and they mixed up dancing club with membership!!!!!!!!! Instead of hiring cheap staffs, it is better to get someone who can work with computer, it is bloody 2023 not 17 century !!!!!! They don't even know how to treat a teenager girl and every time they stopped her and told her that she shouldn't be there!!!!!!! Unfortunately Google doesn't allow me to give them less than 1 star because they deserve minus 100000000 stars!!!!!!! I just threw my daughter membership card to their face and never ever won't let her to go there........

I’m a member at another Nuffield Health in SW London that’s my home club due to amazing creche and fantastic, top of the range equipment, facilities and classes. I can complete varied and full workouts with ease thanks to the layout and availability of new, top of the range equipment. This branch is closer to me so recently gave it a go. I can only assume members haven’t visited another gym in recent years- as they clearly have no idea they are paying and putting up with ANCIENT equipment!! I was so disappointed- this is old black chunky metal Life Fitness machines/cardio and weights from at least 10 years ago and it totally shows. The variety/quality of the weight machines is appalling- just 1 ancient leg press that a guy was hogging for 20 mins, not enough other leg machines, only 1 jump box block I could see that was Sellotaped together and being used by a PT (while my gym has at least 5 of these so can always use for jump squats) ...I could go on.... I was shocked. This COULD be a stunning gym as it has a lot of character in the building/pool area with a complete redesign and overhaul of equipment, the staff on reception were also very cheery, but at the meant its really mediocre and stuck 10 years behind in the quality and quantity of equipment you’d expect.

I really like this gym. The pool and sauna are great, and not usually too busy. Not too many little kids around. And the actual gym is well equipped, although the gym floor is quite cramped. Worth the money, for me!

Avoid. Very poor value for money. Im not sure why it is so expensive and will look elsewhere in future as the gym is nothing special. During membership period facilities have closed and unavailable but continue to charge the full prices. As your contracts states this could happen to you at anytime and you may aswell find somewhere better, more reliable and cheaper unless you are happy to pay high fees just to use a pool. The opening hours also mean that if, like me you have a job, the gym/pool may be closed when you want to go or will be busy.

Seriously unfriendly and cold welcome by the 'duty manager', she could hardly crack a smile let alone be bothered to show me around the facility. I felt like I was inconveniencing her by asking to view the facilities! All in all I felt unwelcomed and the gym was not to the standard I expected. Old and outdated furnishings, no atmosphere, basically not an environment where you get that 'buzz' or 'feel good' vibe to actually want to workout in... What a disappointment!

The gym is generally quite good. There's a pool, lessons etc if you want to use them too. It's very expensive if you just want to use the gym. Staff are generally pleasant and helpful. However, the administration of the gym is terrible. If you have a problem, there is never anyone responsible to speak to and emails and telephone messages never get responded to. Very poor management.

An absolute rip off! The gym is extremely expensive for what it is - fancy coffee shop but beside that nothing special, equipements pretty basic, overcrowded class, gym always busy with no space for floor exercises... They make you pay 15 pounds a month extra for a flexible- no commitment contract- which is a lie. I just gave my notice 8th august explaining I lost my job and I can't pay and they are forcing me to pay until end of September... Absolutely appalling practices.

I am very pleased to comment on the fantastic attributes this particular Personal Trainer brings to Nuffield gym floor. Piers is very knowledgeable in all aspects of physical training and training equipment. Furthermore, his supportive and approachable presence is a great value for the Members and the Club.. Thank you Piers for being an exceptional team member, and thank you Nuffield for being present in Surbiton..

Poor club in comparison to other branches that I’ve been to, in spite of it being more expensive. The mens changing rooms are not especially well maintained and it has often taken several months for damaged items to be repaired / replaced. The sauna temperature is not adequate. They changed swimming class schedules without consultation resulting in higher costs for parents. They made it difficult to temporarily pause my membership. The customer care person couldn’t be bothered to answer my emails.

Saw a couple of negative reviews. Felt obliged to submit one as I disagree with their comments.. - Unlimited amount of free parking - Friendly, helpful staff - Always PTs around the gym if you need anything - A ton of classes every day - Regularly cleaned throughout - Decent amount of weights/racks/machines for strength - A massive amount of cardio machines - Pool / steam room / saunas / Jacuzzi Sure, it's busy Mon-Fri at 5:30pm & again Saturday morning.. Not really sure why that's the gyms fault though - it's just popular :/ I visit 6 times a week & always enjoy the sessions..

Very good local club. I’ve been member for more than a decade and seen the changes and improvements over the years. We use the pool for swim lessons because they have great swim teachers and the exercise classes are fantastic because the instructors are excellent in their specialist area. There has been improvements with online booking for classes and I have generally found the facilities clean, the staff friendly, the management open to feedback and suggestions and the parking much better now that it is monitored yet still free.

Waste of time and money - poorly equipped gym if you’re actually interested in weights or maintaining muscle. VERY limited number of cables/machines and people hog what is available. Excellent local gym! This is the second time we subscribed for a membership here after living away for a while. After checking David Lloyd Club and local community gyms, we are happy to stick to Nuffield. Reasonably priced (towels included), big car park, a proper swimming pool, upgraded equipment installed this month - we have nothing to complain about. For those who like classes at pick hours naturally you have to book well in advance. For me, who prefers individual workouts, there is sufficient space for everyone. Staff is always friendly, changing rooms are big, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The weights area is too small and is very crowded. Also some important benches and machines are missing. For example the hyperextension bench. There are other rooms that are always empty which could be dedicated to weights instead. Considering the premium price I would say not a great value for the money.

Not particularly family friendly. It's really annoying and incompetent of you to show the small pool opens at 10am on Saturday. Only for it to be closed for lessons with 3 people in it. I even asked the manager who said it was open, only to be told when getting in its closed. Why can't you display the times online or just let the lessons in the small pool start from 8-10 for the 6 people that have lessons. Sort it out.

I have been a member here for several years and it’s going downhill rapidly. The environment is clinical and there is no atmosphere. The kitchen is often closed due to staff shortages. Terrible commercial music featuring adverts. The steam room is either too cold or too hot and staff use a towel underneath the door to control the heat as it doesn’t fit properly. I’m still a member as I enjoy swimming however I’m looking elsewhere.

I normally use Nufffield Health gym at Sumbury but since it is being refurbished I visited this gym as its near to me too as I live in Hampton. The staff in reception were truly awful and rude, firstly they seemed bothered because I interrupted their conversation then they tried to charge me to enter the gym even though I know I can use any Nuffield Health gym in the country. After challenging them and telling this ladies in reception that I was told in my gym I could use the Surbiton gym they let me in putting an awkward face. Thanks for the vile treatment ladies but I will certainly won't be back, not only is your customer service dreadful but your gym is smaller and with less equipment than the branch in Sunbury. I urge Nuffield Health to sort out the issues at their Surbiton branch.

Like the gym. It can get very busy between 5-7pm. However, Sarah, the receptionist and Colette, the PT. Sarah has always been so helpful and friendly, she is absolutely a gem to nuffield in Surbiton. Colette is always polite and friendly, who always takes initiatives to ask me if I have been well even she is not my PT. Nuffield, please make sure the ventilation in the small gym is improved as it is getting hotter and working out in the small gym can be challenging in the summer.

Such a fantastic place to work out, the facilities are clean, classes are really awesome with the staff being very welcoming and knowledgeable, new up to date equipment as well as a family friendly environment. Only downside is the hours, I find 6:30 am opening time during the week days to be quite late if anybody starts their commute or job at 7.

very poor gym, equipment is poorly maintained and classes are always over booked. Classes are squeezed into walkways so there are arms, legs and equipment swinging making it dangerous to walk between equipment. This used to be a nice gym, but it has become a victim of its own success and is no longer a pleasant place to go and attempt to exercise at.

The gym itself is nice, the staff I spoke to has always been very friendly, lovely spaces, I am no expert and it has enough for my needs, although i wish there was some gym staff around to ask how to use a machine or for an advice. In my opinion there are two main issues, creche is available for 3 hours only and it is very often fully booked, meaning you pay for a membership you might not be able to use if creche is no available. On the other side is impossible to book a class, most of them are fully booked. Still a member but overpaying for the use i can get out of it.

I requested the FREE 1 day pass online initially but soon joined this Nuffield Health gym after having my second child (and wanting to get back into shape). Great staff, knowledgeable, always welcoming and friendly. Swimming pool expertly maintained and an extensive studio class timetable. Cafe serves lovely and reasonably priced food and drink. There are physiotherapists, nutritionists and personal trainers on-site too! Children's nursery on-site too (but additional cost). There is a real community at the Nuffield Health gym in Surbiton, I could not be without my membership to be honest! Not the cheapest gym, but highly recommended! Sharon, 35 - Kingston

Outdated equipment (many not supported by vendors apps), some in poor repair. Facilities closes 30 min before site. Toilets up to 2 hours before site. Cafe closes... um... not sure I’ve actually seen it open.

Is there an easier way of being able to get a place on one of the classes as every time I try and book a place a week in advance on either Yoga or Aqua Aerobics, it is either fully booked or waiting list only. I have been trying for the last 2 weeks.

I think the facilities are good not cheap but good. I know it's a public place to attract everyone but getting tired of kids running riot in the changing room and around the cafe place when it's designated for adults. Lack of parenting skills no doubt?

This is a great gym, fully kitted out with anything and everything you would need! Also clean, light and spacious! Not cheap though!

Beautiful building, full of character. I love the high ceilings and the the large window in some of the studios creating fresh, bright and airy atmosphere.

Having tried other gyms in the area, we have to say that the staff, management, and maintenance of the gym is much better than elsewhere locally. The offer of towels and parking is a small thing, but it really adds to the experience, and knowing we can have health MOTS and physio if required is really great! 5 out of 5 for Nuffield so far! :)

Over 8 years I have been a member of this Gym and very happy with them. Of course, there are some pro and cons, it’s not 100% perfect (especially admins), still I feel it’s great value for money, if you use the swimming pool and the spa facility (sauna, steam room and jacuzzi) regularly. Only high-end gyms have these, and if so, their membership fees are often much higher than here. If you just want to use lifting facilities, it’s much better off to search smaller gyms. Especially I like their classes. Many varieties and instructors are brilliant. Although they are rather quickly full up (around 25 people per class), it’s up to us to book them asap once their booking starts (7am, 8 days ahead). It proves how classes are good and popular. I reckon that I will be a member here many coming years.

This gym honestly needs a full make over, I have been to more modern, well equipped "The Gyms" over this Nuffield and the price comparison is insane. My boyfriend visited on a friends pass and said it is more like a prison. Patched up cracks of paint and plaster all over the place, I put my phone on a windowsill once and a bit of the concrete broke off. I really don't know how they justify the price for this club, it is almost like the club hasn't been refurbished since it was Cannons. Staff super friendly, great location and on site parking but this just might be one of the most ran down Nuffields with the highest price. The pool is always packed with lessons and the Jacuzzi is nearly always broken - not to mention it was turned off for 6 months to save money but no money was deducted off of memberships. The gym is always so busy with no real space to manoeuvre. It is a shame as other Nuffields are really nice but for this to be my local gym it is absolutely not good enough

Really hard to get a good workout here at the moment. The real driver of that is too many people are chasing too few decent pieces of equipment. Club came off badly from Technogym refurb in late 2019, lost many benches and pieces of cardio equipment. Some poor choices of equipment - particularly bad pivot press and no proper row stand out. Unbelievably, air con in cardio area *still* not fixed - it was too hot come April, never mind the weather we've had the last month (June 23). Also, they have given up the sports subscription on the TVs, so be prepared to watch wall to wall news, or daytime TV rubbish. Weak excuses given. My membership price hasn't risen in 10 years, and was speaking to another member still on a Cannon's contract! I'd rather pay more, have decent facilities/equipment and fewer people tbh.
