😐 Pros: Great price, open 24/7, free parking Cons: Too busy at peak hours (4pm-8pm), limited staff, equipment squashed together, some equipment old and rusty, equipment not well organised. Just too busy and a real lack of space in the gym. Due to my work schedule I was only able to try going between... People often mention equipment, good, staff, classes, busy, great, friendly, Great, people, clean,

Pros: Great price, open 24/7, free parking Cons: Too busy at peak hours (4pm-8pm), limited staff, equipment squashed together, some equipment old and rusty, equipment not well organised. Just too busy and a real lack of space in the gym. Due to my work schedule I was only able to try going between 4pm and 8pm but far too busy to be worth the time for me. Seem to be trying to fit too much equipment into the the small space they have. A real shame as I've used The Gym Group in Swansea and Telford and thought those gyms were excellent!

I’ve only ever been to the gym so don’t really know what to compare my experience to. It seems okay but some tramp stole my sweatshirt a while ago when I forgot to put it in my locker and the staff were useless. This was like two years ago but I really liked that sweatshirt :/

Decent gym, but don’t know how people manage to breathe in the gym though, boiling hot. can’t remember the last time the air conditioning ever worked, they always seem to be out of order. just feels like there is no proper ventilation or flow of air, everyone is just happy to breathe each others air that is let out, breathe back in and out until it’s pure co2. As soon as me and my partner exit and go outside, you start to feel normal. I think in this day and age it is important to have good flow of air coming into the gym as well as the air conditioning working in correct manner as it makes it difficult to train the way it is right now. Especially if the gym is like a glass box with windows that can’t be opened. Yes you can pay more and go to a gym that won’t have this issue ever but this has to be the least basic need that every gym should consider and stay on top of?

The staff in this gym make it, friendly and available. Great classes although the exercise area is very small and often too crowded. BUT the gym is often extremely busy and usually waiting for equipment, even getting in the door can involve queueing for a minute or two. The real dent on the rating though is the cleanliness, the men's changing rooms and toilets are always frankly disgusting, lots of broken lockers etc. The air conditioning unit was leaking on the class area unfixed for weeks before Christmas too. I'd recommend trying Kings Heath instead.

The gym group in my opinion is a very bad employer that treats staff terribly, and if they leave they still keep taking rental payments from their accounts. And when you try to get it back they ignore you and you cannot get in touch with head office or their legal department. Don’t work there!

If you're on a budget and don't want to pay a lot, it's ideal. However... It gets unbelievably busy, and lately seems to be busy round the clock, probably a lot of people switching from more expensive gyms to save money (understandable). Theres a few machines that are getting extremely tired, don't work as they should, but there's no apparent action to restore them it seems, as they've been like it for years! It needs fresh updated equipment that's for sure. Certainly when you consider PureGym is opening soon... What reasons are there to stay at this Gym when I could go and enjoy brand new stuff there?? If everyone is of the same opinion... They could be in for a mass exodus.

Good gym facilities, my only issue is I’m finding the gym to be too hot when working out! Can barely feel the air con, is it enough to put me off coming to the gym, no one wants to work out in a hot environment!

I want to start by saying, I do love the gym, all the trainers, and the little community it had. Mikeys classes are the single best thing that happens in this gym. If he had classes every night at 6pm I would be there. I love to attend both classes on Mondays and Thursdays. The 45 min classes are the best, I don't like coming to the gym for a 30min class alone, it feels like by the time you're warm, the class is over. However, the air con seriously needs looking at. It leaks out of every vent and is basically on functional in the changing rooms (or that's what it feels like). And from a neurodiverse mind, constantly rearranging the gym is unhelpful, it makes people like myself less likely to venture into the gym outside of class. I understand the need to clean everything, but rearranging ever time there is a deep clean is unnecessary. Also, I appreciate the investment and equipment in the gym , but not at the expense of the older equipment that there's nothing wrong with. Example, the new exercise balls look fantastic, but when I utilise them for core exercises that involve bouncing them off a surface, they bounce in all directions, so that exercise isn't feasible for me anymore. Another example, the old pull up rig was multifunctional and had two spaces for pull ups as well as other uses at the same time. The new rig has space for 3 people to do pull ups, IF nobody else wants to access any equipment DIRTECTLY beneath them. This could be easily resolved by rotating the top half 180 degrees. It is perfectly feasible and practical. To end on a positive note, all off the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They are always on hand to give excellent advice.

Why haven't they got any hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes. They supply a very cheap watered down spray for cleaning down the equipment with a roll of toilet paper lol. Didn't see even one member of staff cleaning even though I was there for 3 hours.

They really need to fix the air conditioning. It is like working out in a sauna. Even worse during the warm weather as there is no air moving around.

I try to go about 6am. Fairly busy at that time, but I never had problems in being able to use the equipment I wanted to. Gym is well equipped. The classes they have on at 6:30 look really good too. Free parking in the Asda car park.

I have been a member of this gym for the last 12-18 months and have struggled to find the right gym for me. Whilst I have struggled to get into a routine and find a PT to help me achieve my fitness goals over the years, The Gym Shirley has helped me do this. The location and convenience is just perfect. Finding a personal trainer is always difficult especially one that sets clear targets and plans to help you achieve your physique and coaching you to get into shape. Pritam is fantastic and has been great throughout this process, he’s an ambassador for the brand and credit to The Gym. In all the time I have been a member he’s been so helpful & has really pushed me to achieve my goals and I can’t commend him enough for doing so. It’s always a pleasure when visiting and training with him. The Assistant Manager Sally & PT Lauren are also a credit to the team, always welcoming, making you feel so valued as a member. Chris is doing an excellent job with his team and creating an enjoyable environment for members visiting the gym. Well done Pritam, Sally & Lauren 😁

Great gym, the free classes are really good. Mikey and Hasan have been fantastic. I've done quite a few classes and workouts with them since joining and the advice and support they've given has helped me immensely.

Mikey’s training goes a long way. I enjoy so much in his class that it always motivates to first come to gym and then push my limits to be more fitter via his exercises. His dedication in the classes is next level and I would like to rate him to the top of all trainers as far as classes are concerned having attended almost all classes. Keep going Mikey Mills - you are so good in whatever you do. Best of luck to you and your journey with this gym. Gym would require to have few more amenities however have enough to keep going. The only other feedback was for the body composition and fitness measurements machine - I had taken the premium subscription for this machine and to be honest in never worked for 2.5 months which doesn’t makes sense specially given the number of people comes here

I have been to many gyms over the years but I would definitely say The Gym Group Shirley is the place to be with a friendly atmosphere and sense of community with the gym goers and staff especially Pritam Singh who I have been having PT sessions with for the past year he has helped me with getting great results and continues to do so with his tailored workout plans and nutritional advice that I have not been able to get with previous personal trainers so would highly recommend him if anyone is looking to kick start their fitness journey.

This is the first Gym I signed up to when I first moved to Birmingham and I am so glad that I did. The classes are brilliant, The Gym community, including staff are very accommodating, welcoming and helpful. There is a range of equipment and staff are always available to support you with anything you might need. The energy and vibe in the gym is very motivating and inclusive. Pritam, Mikey and Jamie give advice and guidance to help better yourself and to support you to grow stronger in the right way. The belief they have in you to be the best version of yourself is second to none. Thank you!

  • 4/5 James W. 2 years ago on Google
Have been a member of this gym for over a year now and it has a good atmosphere, really friendly and helpful staff, and have handled the pandemic requirements really well. My only negative points would be that there are a number of members who don’t fully follow covid requirements, generally staff pull them up on this, but there are a few instances where this hasn’t happened. I’ll continue to be a member though, great price, and a good range of equipment. Generally I find morning to be the quietest peak time, going the quietest after 9ish. Very busy after about 5pm though.

Busy but clean and often you can get the equipment you want if you are patient. Best to visit outside of the hours of 6pm and 8pm because during those hours it is PACKED.

I have had a good experiences here. Just one example I had trouble getting in(my fault) and the manager was happy to help and went out of his way to help me get in with no hassle. It's always clean, tidy and has a good vibe. For the price it's a great gym and I love that I can park so close in the underground car park. Cheers guys !

Viewed this gym today and will most definitely be joining, facilities look good, modern and clean and seems to be ample kit for even busy periods, membership prices are good with no contract and 24hr access. I have given 4 stars as I’m unable to review it efficiently until I’ve joined and used it but I will update and adjust accordingly in the near future.

Really pleased I joined this gym. Plenty of classes available which help me because I don't have much of a clue what I'm doing on my own, and all the staff I've met have been so friendly and willing to help with my form and fitness (Anthony especially). Good value for money, always clean and plenty of equipment available.

I have been at the gym since it opened after years of changing gyms every couple of years based on affordability and convenience. The cost of membership has remained competitive & I was impressed with how lockdown and coming out of it was managed effectively. The staff are friendly and knowledgable, the equipment is good and the free classes are well worth it! The gym is not so local to me after a house move but for the first time I am reluctant to leave ☺️

Great gym, lots of equipment..to do pretty much any exercise, changing rooms are spacious, love the classes that they do in the morning and afternoons. The gym is kept clean and tidy everytime. Staff are really welcoming, personal trainer Pritam is the best trainer you could ask for, he has really helped me to get where i want. Ive rated this gym 5 stars as theres nothing i would change. :) xx

This gym has great facilities and great staff. They have a wide range of classes to suit all levels. Jamie’s and Mikey’s classes are always good! They have some great PT’s - Pritam being one of them. Pritam goes above and beyond to educate you on your fitness and nutrition journey. He’s helped shift my mindset on all of this. I’ve also learnt ring training through him which has supported my core strength, balance and conditioning!

  • 1/5 Faizan R. 3 years ago on Google
Absolutely the worst gym I've been to for anyone who likes free weights. It's so small for the number of people who go there. And its worst for people who want to use free weights the space is tiny. Only one bench press, one Olympic power rack and one squat rack. Like 5 barbells in the whole gym too. You basically never get to use them. The one in kings heath has 3 Olympic power racks, two squat racks and like 3 more power racks as part of a big frame. With a similar amount of people going. Save yourself the time and don't go to this gym.

As someone who trained at the Kingsbury Road branch, this place is terrible in comparison. 1. Hygiene. The place is filthy, used tissues everywhere, no staff cleaning at peak hours, the bumper plates are absolutely filthy and touching them leaves grease on your hands. 2. Freeweights. If you want to squat or deadlift anything over 100kg, forget it, due to a lack of plates, racks and platforms. 3. Too many people. Due to the previously mentioned lack of equipment, lots of people are stood around doing nothing or waiting for equipment. If you like to lift and not do cardio, go somewhere else.

The Gym has such a variety of classes and also really great personal trainers, all to support with your fitness goals. The app is really useful and the thing I love most is that you can see what times your home gym is busiest throughout the day so you can plan to miss the busy periods. The cross trainers have paper stuck at the bottom as there broken Same with treadmills Same with other runners with rollers that move side to side. Raised with the big man more than a year ago, done nothing sense. Gyms in high profile areas in Birmingham are better maintained.

The friendliest gym I’ve ever been a part of! If you, as a user, make the effort to be amenable then you will be rewarded with a friendly greeting from all the gym instructors (usually by name) and a genuine interest in how you are progressing. There’s loads of equipment, I rarely have to wait for anything, and best of all the monthly subscription is a bargain, meaning I can afford to invest in some one-to-one personal training sessions, that the instructors also offer. Couldn’t be happier!
