The Gaudiya Math is a Gaudiya Vaishnava matha monastic organisation formed on 6 September 1920, about 30 months after Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati took sannyasa, the renounced order of life. On 7 March 1918, the same day he took sannyasa, he established the Sri Chaitanya Math in Mayapura in West Bengal, later recognised as the parent body of all the Gaudiya Math branches. Its purpose was to spread Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the philosophy of the medieval Vaisnava saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, through preaching and publishing. From the beginning of Chaitanya's bhakti movement in Bengal, devotees, including Haridasa Thakur and others, whether Muslim or Hindu by birth, have been participants. This openness and disregard for the traditional caste system received a boost from the \"broad-minded vision\" of Bhaktivinoda Thakura, a nineteenth-century magistrate and prolific writer on bhakti topics, and was institutionalised by his son and successor Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura in the twentieth-century Gaudiya Math. The Gaudiya Math had established 64 branches. Most were in India, but preaching centres were maintained for a time in Burma, England and Germany.

Sri Chaitanya Math (শ্রী চৈতন্য মঠ) is a prominent monastic and spiritual institution within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. It is named after Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 16th-century saint and proponent of the Bhakti movement, who is revered as an incarnation of Lord Krishna by his followers. Sri Chaitanya Math is closely associated with the teachings and practices of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Its primary focus is on the promotion of devotion (bhakti) to Lord Krishna, particularly through congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and the dissemination of the Bhakti philosophy. Key activities and features of Sri Chaitanya Math may include: 1. Daily Worship: Devotees engage in daily worship and services to the deities of Lord Krishna and Radha. 2. Sankirtan: Congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is a central practice, often accompanied by singing, dancing, and sharing spiritual teachings. 3. Spiritual Education: The math often provides educational programs, lectures, and seminars on the Bhakti philosophy and teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. 4. Pilgrimage: Some Sri Chaitanya Maths are located at significant pilgrimage sites associated with Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's life and travels. 5. Community Service: Many Sri Chaitanya Maths engage in charitable and community service activities, including providing food, shelter, and education to those in need. 6. Festivals: Sri Chaitanya Math celebrates various Hindu festivals, with a special emphasis on festivals related to Lord Krishna. There are several Sri Chaitanya Maths established in India and around the world, each with its own leadership and specific activities. They serve as centres of spiritual and devotional life for followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and are places where devotees can deepen their spiritual practice and understanding of the Bhakti tradition.

The place exudes elegance and the auspicious aura of Mayapur just engulfs it..... The prasad is warm, comforting and affordable... However it's quite far away from ISCKON... We had a wonderful stay... The rooms are not equipped for prolonged stay but enough for a day or two

Wonderful place. This is where Bhaktisidhanta Saraswati Thakur, Guru of A.C. Prabhupad, the founder of ISKCON used to pray. The whole place is beautifully decorated with flower garden. There is a miniature Govardhan hill along with Shyam kund and Radha kund. There is also a museum depicting the life and teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It opens early in the morning and closes at 12.00 p.m., it then again reopens at 3.30 p.m. upto 9.00 p.m.
