Get ready for a long hike uphill and a good amount of history at the end. You can only take your car up to a certain point in the park and if you want to get to the fort you have to go on foot. Its about a 3km walk with plenty of places to see and stop to catch your breath. The fort is small but full of interesting historical facts. The park closes at 5pm so be sure to get there before then. Dont worry if on your way out you find the gate closed because it opens up when you get near.

Beautiful spot to enjoy scenery but no beaches access, no swimming etc. Park your car at Gunners Cottage (no cars beyond it), it gets full in the weekends and there’s toilet & bubbler there. You can then walk in (2.9km), bike ride or take the shuttle bus ($12 per adult all day). Park your bike at Fort Nepean (no bikes beyond that point). There are toilets & disable toilets and seating areas at the the tip of Fort Nepean. Parents are able to push prams around pretty easily. Stunning place but it’s shame we can’t enjoy the beaches.

Amazing place- you have to visit at least once in your life. We walked up instead of taking the bus and saw many people with bikes/scooters. Make sure you wear your walking shoes. Bits were blocked off due to unstable architecture.

It's worth the visit - a lovely spot for day walks, beach walks, birdwatching, sunsets, picnics, and importantly to place to reflect on our military history & pay your respects to those who fought for peace & the privileged life we life in Oz .

Amazing place with a very nice scenic hike for those who choose to walk instead of the bus. Views are amazing and we stopped every few meters for lots of photos. My parents loved the easy hike took the bus back. Apart from its beauty, the historic knowledge we gained was great too, from the old forts to the point where the former PM disappeared. Will need to go back soon.

Awesome place for everyone. There is a bus service ($12 / Adult, Kids no charges) if you don’t want to walk or if you have kids. It’s 2.8km bus ride / walk to the fort. Private vehicles are not allowed. Read the history of this place to make an interesting and meaningful trip. Cheers.

A really good place to visit if you are in Melbourne (public transport available bus/train). From the car park to the Fort Nepean (almost 3/3.5 KMs) walk/cycle or take the advantage of the bus service...... 👍🏽

Wonderful full day walk exploring the trails. I walked in from Portsea. Lots of people walking, cycling and catching the loop bus. Well maintained space with stunning views and interesting history. Highly recommend setting aside a full day to explore here.

A great piece of history to walk through on a sunny day. Only downside was that a lot of it was closed off closer to the end. There is a fairly inexpensive shuttle service but we thought we'd enjoy the scenic stroll instead. Although it is very scenic and would definitely do it again, I would not recommend the walk without the correct gear! Its a good 4km+ trek mostly in the sun... Come prepared!

We thought you could drive all the way out as Google showed a road out to the end, but it was not so. However, we had to stop at the Gunners cottage (the farthest parking spot). There wasn't any info on shuttle costs and there wasn't any signs of life anywhere when we went so was disappointed. The signage was lousy in the area will little information displayed on access, shuttles etc. We did walk out to the beach by the gunners cottage and it was stunning. I suggest going to the visitor information to get appropriate details on what is accessible as we thought it wasn't well signed and little information once out there.

This is one of the places which must be visited at least once. Not only is it a piece of history, but it also would be a memorable visit to a breathtaking lookout. There is a walking trace after the car park, and be watchful of cute animals beside the track. A bus could be taken as well if you would like to skip the walk and get to the castle straight away. Great view of the ocean could not be shown in photos.

The parking is 2.8 km away from the actual Fort near Gunners Cottage. One can hop on the shuttle bus that picks you from Gunners Cottage to the Fort with a return fare $12. Good place to walk through history. The technology used in the late 1800s was the highlight for me. Some areas were under maintenance but overall a good experience.

The views are amazing and the bike ride was doable with 4 kids and lots of snacks and drinks packed. History and views at their finest. We enjoyed the audio story at Gun 6 and going down to the ocean near the old engine room.

Great historical information posted about the forts involvement in the First and Second World War. The life of the people that served here during that period under great sacrifice. Very well presented and tidy. Condition of buildings are reasonable considering their age. The condition of roads and paths are excellent and many stairs so come prepared. The point is very exposed and can be wet and windy. Access roads are in excellent condition and walking to the Fort is very achievable or a shuttle bus is available, running at regular intervals. Well worth a visit for all members of the family young and old.

Easy coastal work. Fabulous views peppered with places of historical significance. Pack your sunscreen though, not a lot of shade. Even spotted an echidna on our walk.

There are many reasons to visit this part of the country. The scenery is outstanding with lots of wildlife. I was surprised at the military history too. Plenty of hiking if desired or the easier option is to jump on the shuttle bus. It is a National Park so, no dogs.

There's a lot to see and do here so you need a day to check it out. The quarantine station has a lot of buildings and displays to see. It has nice grounds and a beach too. There's a bit of walking involved to see the rest of the park unless you have a bicycle. All the fortifications and tunnels are very interesting and have information boards. Well worth a visit.

Great view, good day out, shuttle from main carpark to point and various sites along the roadway, otherwise you can walk along the paved road or along the dirt track. Definitely worth taking a jacket due to the wind, the water is blue and the underground tunnels and old weaponry is very cool. Great day out.

Great spot for history buffs and everyone else! It was really interesting to tour around the Fort and see how it worked during two world wars. We especially loved the observatory tower. As at June 2023, part of the circuit from the engine room back up to the shuttle pick up point is closed due to a land slip.

A beautiful historic attraction where you can learn the history of the WW1 fort with amazing views of the ocean, accessible via a bus that goes to and from the port, or you could always walk your way down too while taking in the view, just make sure not to get hit by the bus 😅 You can even see Queenscliff and a little bit of the city skyscrapers from certain points tok

  • 5/5 Zoë Victoria C. 4 years ago on Google
Fantastic place to visit with outstanding views. An enjoyable and informative historical location. You can either walk, cycle or catch the shuttle bus to get to the tunnels, however I highly recommend catching the bus. The views along the way are outstanding but also the bus driver is absolutely fantastic! He regaled fascinating tales and pointed out interesting landmarks along the way with infectious enthusiasm and was actually one of the highlights of our whole visit. A great place to visit all round and definitely worth making the trip.

If you're after a different experience other than the beach, look no further than Point Nepean National Park! Lots of trails to explore along with the actual historical sites. Moderately steep incline up to Cheviot Hill but well worth it for the views across the Bay on one side and Bass Straight on the other. Plus you may be lucky enough to encounter echidna up close and personal like I did up there. But of a drive from where I am but will be back to walk other unexplored trails!

  • 5/5 Kiran 1 year ago on Google
The places is about 2.8km walk from the car park. There is an option to buy hop-on bus tickets at 12$ each for adults or 8$ for children which runs until 4.30 pm. The fort is well maintained and many places to explore inside the tunnel. The engine room is further down close to see where you can see ships entry to port Phillip bay Please carry water and snacks as it may get hot/cold and windy at different places

A Great place to visit, amazing views and a significant historical site, around 7 km round trip walk so take water and food, insect repellent, hat and sunscreen, there is also a regular bus if you don't want to walk. 5 Stars

Almost the end of defence road in Point Nepean National park. One of the most amazing scenic points, What's beautiful about this spot is that you'll never get the same scene as the weeks go by.

Interesting piece of history. Lots to see. Free access. Tunnels and canons and thick walled bunkers. A lot of it, even the tunnels, is wheelchair accessible, but there are parts with long stairs as well. You can walk/ride here from Portsea, or take the bus ($) which runs within the park.

  • 5/5 Stephen F. 2 years ago on Google
Very informative and lots of tunnels and rooms intact for exploring. Information panels explain the facility and the extraordinary defence it provided. Walk from the carpark to the fort is 3km so wear good shoes, wear a hat and sunscreen, and take water.

  • 5/5 Marie P. 4 years ago on Google
We took our bikes with us and were quite surprised how big the park actually was. We needed a whole day by bike because we really stop at every historical sign and took the time to walk almost everywhere. Loved the ruins, the scenery, biking along the waterfront and all the hidden ways to beaches and places. I just loved this place. You can walk if you like. It is so lovely there. Even a bus going every 15 minutes from several points on the route, if you are exhausted from walking or maybe just want to see the hot spots. You can even take a break from the very hilly street, since there are several benches on the way to the peek of the island. Highly recommend this beautiful place.

An absolute spectacle of a reclaimed post-war landscape with great views of the Bay and Queens cliff! A fairly easy treck leads to a a maze of the fort structures and tunnels evoking a sense subtle haunt. Great to visit on a sunny winter day!

Really great place to visit if you’re looking for something to do whilst in Melbourne. It’s a beautiful stretch of coastline and the walk is picturesque, pleasant and offers multiple walking track options. I’d love to spend a weekend just exploring it all. There’s great options for photography too in the reserve and at the fort..well worth the walk there and back!

  • 5/5 Rainer W. 1 year ago on Google
This place is amazing! Walk the hour out and back plus allow another 1.5 to 2 hours to explore. The road out is easy walking - no cars allowed. You can ride your bike. So informative. Spectacular views. See where Harold Holt disappeared. See all the first, barracks, bunkers and observation posts. All landmarks ate well signposted with information. Fort Nepean itself has 6 gun emplacements. Most are open and the tunnels etc are lit up for you to explore. There are toilets at the end and places for you to have a picnic. You can stop a few places on the way too for a picnic. Take water, be sunsmart and wear warm clothing on cooler days. Take a torch for sections that are not lit up. A shuttle bus is available if you prefer for $12, jump on and off along the way. There are plenty of trails along the way. Which I explored. You can get maps from the info centre at the quarantine station or download or take a photo of the Billboard map at the Gunners hut where you park and start. Entry is free and I had an amazing time. You can also do the walk to London Bridge but you can also drive to it via London bridge road from Portsea. Thanks National Parks and looking forward to seeing your work of restoration continue and more opening up.

We explored Fort Nepean as part of our Mornington Peninsula trail walk. An interesting interconnected series of lookouts, armament placements and tunnels. Picnic style tables are available for those needing a rest and toilets. A shuttle bus operates from here back to the quarantine station.

Really beautiful walk and historical site. With lovely views. The walk is a bit long if you don't enjoy walking distances but there is a shuttle bus that you can catch to and from the fort. I would recommend doing the walk as there are many great spots to get a fantastic view of the peninsula.

Visiting Sorrento, your tour isn't complete without a trip to Fort Nepean. It is definitely worth 5 starts but the amount of flies is insane. So please take repellent before you go for walk. Also in sunny days I recommend to catch the shuttle bus, special if you have a baby.

Very interesting part of Victoria's history. Pity some of the old guns and buildings are gone. Even putting replicas of them up would inspire the imagination.

Very disappointing just because you can’t catch the bus down there and pay the 12 dollars it s closed due to cov-19. But it was a easy walk

  • 5/5 Andy M. 4 years ago on Google
This is a must see place , the kids loved the tunnels and the views are breathtaking. Once you arrive to the park you drive down to the car park half way in the park. There are multiple walks and ways to get to the to see fort Nepean. We opted for the bus which will take you all the way which is around 3klms. The last time we came we did the historic cemetery and beach walk. Next time we come we will do more walks as there is so much too see. At fort Nepean there is audio and lighting in the tunnels which is excellent explaining what happened at the time for the place to be built. Personally it was excellent to just see the heads which is the opening of port Phillip bay and view the crystal clear water and views on offer.

Its a nice place, i have been 3 times myself and was looking forward in showing my wife and our 4 kids, and also my parents in law. BUT... my wife had a panic attack, axiety and hyperventilated because of the narrow road and cliff edges, and also the seas surrounding the area. As soon as we got to the poibt we got out of the bus, and we decided to catch the bus back as my wife could not handle being there. It was very distressing for her. I would not recomend this to people wirh phobias or anxiety.

A stunning walk from the carpark all the way to Fort Nepean. Great views on the way and some really interesting areas to explore both on the way and once at the fort. Grea too see the gun placements and the tunnels of the fort, in addition to making your way down to the coastal engine house which is tucked away. Definitely an area to explore for a few hours.

Nice place to explore a bit of history. The bus ride is nice too if you manage to get a place to sit. Avoid public holidays to avoid the rush. Alternatively you could choose to trek the last 3km from gunners cottage or even cycle. No other vehicles are allowed on the road from gunners cottage. The bus ride costs $12 per adult & $8 per child. Dont miss the tunnel.
