It’s about 2km to 3km scenic walk to the Fort Nepean from the car park at Gunners Cottage, which is the furthest you can go by a vehicle. Lots of other trails available to explore around the park. Wonderful panoramic open ocean and bay views with fantastic landscapes. It can get a bit windy and cold/hot depending on the season you visit. Therefore, dress appropriately and prepare well. Insect repellent will be handy and good to keep in your bag. It will test your fineness but it’s not that hard. However, don’t worry, there is a shuttle bus that runs frequently between the car park and the peninsula head for a small fee I believe. It’s a must do location and a relaxing place. Easily can spend a day here. Have a great time. I highly recommend it.

What a wonderful National Park. If you are visiting the Mornington Peninsula, this is a must do! If you have a bike, even better (otherwise you need to catch the National Park's shuttle bus or walk). There is an information center, toilets, water outlets, a little coffee station, beautiful views and lots of history. Take your time! There are several walking trails, some are wheel chair accessible. If you are lucky, you can spot wildlife (I found an Echidna).

Beautiful hike for a sunny day! There are 🚲 (+electric) that can be rented out for the day (I'd recommend booking them prior to the trip, as they are usually unavailable on the day) Bus is available to pick and drop you off at various points ($8 one way per person) Many lookouts along the park. Ensure you carry a bottle of water with you.

Located less than 2 hours drive from Melbourne CBD this national park is absolutely a gem. There are multiple historical attractions if you are a history seeking person or you could simply walk about seeing beautiful sceneries. At the end is Fort Nepean which was used in WW2. The site is well preserved and also has breathtaking views. It's roughly 50-60 mins walk one way Fort Nepean car park via defence road. The car park has public toilets available too. On the way to Fort Nepean, there is also Fort Pearce and few detours would provide additional scenic views.

Plenty of car parks even on busy days. Plenty of area to play sports or for whatever you desire to do. Beach is close and semi kid safe. Didn't see any sharks anyway. Toilets, shelter, table and chairs... Great spot.

Point Nepean National Park is an absolute treasure on the Mornington Peninsula! 🌿 The coastal walk offers an immersive experience in nature, with breathtaking views of Bass Strait and Port Philip Bay. The historical sites, including Fort Nepean and the gun turrets, provide a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s wartime past. Walking through the coastal bush and arriving at Cheviot Beach was a highlight - the Harold Holt Memorial is a poignant reminder of history. The park’s accessibility from Melbourne (just a 1.5-hour drive) makes it a perfect day trip destination. The well-maintained trails and informative signage made exploring a breeze. Don’t forget to bring comfy sportswear, sunscreen, and plenty of water. This adventure is well worth it! 🥾🌞 Overall, Point Nepean National Park is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone looking for a memorable day out. It’s a place where the beauty of the Australian coastline meets its rich cultural heritage. Can’t wait to return for more exploration! 🚶‍♂️🌊

Point Nepean National Park is wonderfully scenic with many native birds and animals. There is so much to explore in this fascinating historic part of Victoria. We walked around just a small part of the national park and look forward to coming back again to discover more. There are many historic buildings and reminders of what was one of the most fortified ports in the Southern Hemisphere. Allow at least half a day to take in the sights. For example, you could easily spend half an hour in Gunners Cottage soaking up some of the history. You can also cycle around the large park or take the Point Nepean shuttle bus for part of the journey. A great place for a picnic too :-)

Great walk or cycle for people of all ages. The walk down to Fort Nepean is a good one. We cycled today with our 7 and 3 year old and they loved it. There is a shuttle bus between the different sights if you would rather. Pack a picnic as there is no food sales in the park. But plenty of beautiful places to stop for a snack. The history of the site is really interesting.

Fort Nepean is a hidden gem located at the very tip of Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne where you’ll amaze your eyes with those underground tunnels that were used during world war 1 & 2, and the scenic views around. Catch the shuttle from the car park or take a breathtaking walk and thank me later😄❤️

If you're living in Melbourne, this place is must visit place. Point Nepean National Park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Bunurong People. It's a 1 1/2 hrs drive from city and you will arrive to this beautiful place. You can either take shuttle bus from the car park or either walk towards the point or can cycle. I suggest walk or cycle as you can see the beauty of the nature. You can see Fort Nepean, Qurantine station, and some historic sites etc. And also you can witness cargos and ships. This is a beautiful place to visit specially in a sunny day to witness it's beauty.

A historically rich site with magnificent views! Great place to walk or cycle. There is a shuttle bus from the quarantine station that takes you to fort nepean for convenience. It is not frequent so check a timetable. E bikes are available to hire from the quarantine station.

One of the best summer getaways in south East Melbourne. 1.5 drive from the city to this amazing location and most importantly the ocean view from the top of the hill is breathtaking.

It's a great place to spend a day. You get a lot of places to see, BBQ spots and plenty of relaxing areas. You could hike to check out the fort Nepean which would take about 2-3 hours to complete. There is a shuttle bus as well but the last one is around 4pm.

Such an incredible experience whenever I come here. The history of this place is so diverse, so old, so incredible it's hard to fit a total understanding of it in one visit. It's a beautiful walk to the Fort, or a bus every 30 minutes will get you there. Don't take the bus. What you'll explore by hoofing it will add so much more to the experience. Photographically, this place is just amazing.

Great day out with the kids. Drove up to Gunners Cottage which is the furthest you can go by car. We then decided to walk all the way to the Fort which is 3.8kms one way. Well worth the effort. Had to bribe the kids but they loved it. You can take a bus which costs $12 for adults and $8 for kids. So many pit stops along the way to explore the history and immerse yourself in the past. Weather was windy, overcast, slight drizzle on the odd occasion but it didn't stop us. Better than walking in the heat. After making it back to our car, we drove to the Quarantine station and Information centre. Here, we picked up brochures for self-guided tours. We should have started here but it didn't matter. The Quarantine station is huge. The old buildings are well maintained and the grounds are immaculate. Overall it was brilliant, great photo opportunities and easily clocked up more than 10,000 steps for the day at a leisurely pace.

This is a magnificent spot for people of all ages. There are so many things to do; walking, bike riding, picnic, kids park or just enjoy the beach. If you like learning a little history, there are sign posts along the way. The walking is relatively easy, and you can take it at your own pace. 7.6km return to the Fort. There is also a bus, if you're not up for a long walk. The bus is $12 per adult. Certainly worth a visit.

We just went for a drive not knowing what to expect but learnt so much about Australian history here. War relics, old buildings, memorials as well as wildlife & magnificent views. If you're in the area take the time to check it out. We had only planned to drive in for a quick look but ended up walking around looking at all the sights.

This is one of the best walking tracks in this area!! All the scenes and landscapes are magnificent and you'd hardly feel like you're doing a physical activity. There's also a bus in between the carport and port napean if you like you can use it. I'll visit again and would recommend this amazing walk to all nature lovers!!

This is a great place for a scenic walk - especially when staying down the coast. Have walked this twice and returned today to run it. Always thoroughly enjoy it. 6km walk / run alternatively can check the bus schedule which goes from the carpark. Decent amount of parking- best to do this early morning to avoid the heat on a sunny day. Basic bathroom facilities located at carpark.

A wonderful experience we had! Drove 2 hours from Melb. So we missed the shuttle bus and we took the trail, where we had our first ever encounter with a Kangaroo! Great ocean scenery. Just picturesque. We wish the toilets were clean, though.

There's a lot to see and do here so you need a day to check it out. The quarantine station has a lot of buildings and displays to see. It has nice grounds and a beach too. There's a bit of walking involved to see the rest of the park unless you have a bicycle. All the fortifications and tunnels are very interesting and have information boards. Well worth a visit.

An amazing area with a lot of different vistas and reasons for coming. The Coles Track from the Quarantine Station up toward the forts is easily the best walk. Especially if you continue to follow it away from the main road and up to Eagles Nest, then Pearce Barracks. Great undulating sandy hills overlooking the beach spectacular beach walk back. Also, the road to the forts is a good spot to ride if you can. NOTE: due to COVID, the furthest Fort Nepean has been closed.

This is one of the most beautiful national parks that I have ever visited. The water is crystal clear and blue. The walking track is tidy and the views are spectacular. There is also amazing history that you can learn about on the trails. I highly recommend this national park.

We visited on a very hot day and the natural shade from the large trees and the shade from the old buildings was welcome relief when we set up our picnic blanket. The best part was the access to the beach. The beach here is beautiful and relatively quiet. The nicest beach I've visited down here. The only downside was that the old buildings were closed.

Point Nepean Portsea Market located at the National Park near the Quarantine Station. A must visit if you are in the area and looking for a gift. There are many stoleholders selling their handmade unique products. While you do your shopping. You can enjoy the view of the sea and the historic buildings.

The Point Nepean National Park is a great way to explore the tip of the Mornington Peninsula. You have Bass Straight on one side, Port Philip Bay on the other and throughout some rich, wartime history. You are free to explore tunnels, barracks, store houses, gun emplacements and bunkers. An estimated 130 shipwrecks lie in the Port Phillip Area! ⚓️ We parked at the Front Gate at Police Point and walked all the way to Fort Nepean. This took us around 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace, stopping at all the lookouts and sites on the way such as the Quarantine Station, Point Nepean Cemetery, Eagles Nest, Fort Pearce and Harold Holt Memorial. 🪦 To come back we caught the Hop-On Hop-Off Point Nepean Shuttle which you can purchase tickets on board. It only stops the Front Gate 3 times a day, otherwise it goes to Quarantine Station and Gunners Cottage which is also the closest point you can park your car to the Fort. 🚗 An amazing walk to tick of your list, not too strenuous and enjoyable for all ages!🚶🏽‍♀️

This is a fantastic national park. A long, varied walk if you want it, if not, there's a bus. The fort itself is a delightful warren of tunnels that kids, and adults, will enjoy. There are plenty of history boards to tell you what once happened there, and of course the views across The Rip are fantastic. The Quarantine Station is interesting, there's a coffee cart, and a memorial above the beach where PM Harold Holt drowned. Last time I was there I saw an echidna up close. This time I saw a white-footed dunnart. Have you ever seen a white-footed dunnart?! I hadn't. So cute! Love this place. I'd been before and I'll go again.

What a magnificent National Park!! It's a must visit place if you are in Port Sea. No need to pay for parking even though it's a National park, it does get busy as it is very popular. Lots of great tracks, there is wheelchair access tracks as well. You can also take a bike go for a nice ride, it does have a few hills so make sure you take it easy and bring water along. If you have time bring a backpack 🎒 with a picnic and pic a spot to enjoy the scenery. Enjoy I will be definitely going back there soon. PS:There is a bus service if yo get to the end and can't be bothered/tired to walk back.

This is such a beautiful park located in the Mornington peninsula. You can walk, cycle through this amazing landscape or even or take the shuttle bus up to the Fort Nepean. It is about 2-3 km from Gunner’s cottage car park to the Fort Nepean which will take around 40-45 minutes to walk. Sunscreen, hats, shades are a must if you are visiting this place during a sunny day because there is no much shade on your way to the Fort. We walked to the Fort and on our way back to the car park we came by the shuttle bus. The shuttle is available every 30 minutes. You can also visit the Quarantine station which was used to quarantine people arriving in Victoria. I prefer walking or cycling as you can enjoy the panoramic ocean views. One of the must visit places.

An interesting park with stunning views and fascinating history. The beaches, fort, graveyards and quarantine stations are all worth a visit in their own way. And if you make it to the end the views of the bay and the ocean are spectacular. Look out for dolphins on the bay beach who often play there

  • 4/5 Rohan S. 4 years ago on Google
The signage is perfect so you won't get lost. Comfortable walk which takes about 3.5-4hrs from Gunners Cottage return, if you stop at every pit stop they have. The views are breathtaking on either side with a great piece of history. However, the presence of flies made the whole trip rather uncomfortable. Please take a bug spray with you when you visit.

  • 3/5 Adam R. 3 years ago on Google
It was a good walk but many tracks closed and by the time we trekked 3.5km the last .5km was closed due to coronavirus so we did not see the fort at the headland ...Thanks over reacting government. Noted too all the camp g spots on the foreshore were closed 'due to coronavirus'....terrible shame

  • 5/5 Jody L. 4 years ago on Google
Beautiful walk that can take as little time as you like, but around 1/2 a day if you really want to explore everything. Most of the walk is along a road, so expect to share the path with cyclists. Although it is wheelchair and pram friendly, be prepared for a couple of hills. During the summer peak there is a shuttle service to reduce the distance. There are toilets at the parking and shuttle areas. A cafe at the park entrance provides energy to start your day, or a reward for your exercise at the end. The walk itself explores the history of Point Nepean as an army base during the world wars. There are interesting little blurbs to read, as well as old equipment and buildings to explore. For nature lovers expect to see coastal flora, abundant birdlife, and perhaps lizards, wallabies or the local pod of Port Phillip Bay dolphins.

So much to see here! Scenic, quiet, historic - a few words I would use to describe this area. Come prepared with food and water, park near gunners cottage and set off. I was only able to cover a couple of trails, and I was there half a day. There are a few bunkers tucked away in the hills along the trails. Would recommend you have a day to spare and explore every single landmark.

Excellent day out. Regardless if you just want to chill, have a picknick, go for a long walk through the many historical buildings and locations or do it the easy way abd catch the Ventura / Parks Vic shuttle bus all day. There is something for everyone from young to old to do. But bring your own food / drinks. There is nowhere in the park to buy food or drinks. I still find that strange.

  • 5/5 N H. 2 years ago on Google
Nice place to spend the day with the family. At the Quarantine Station are even BBQ's. You can also access some buildings at no charge. Spend time on the beach or have a short or long walk. Fantastic views.

Such a beautiful park, bursting with wildlife and history. Explore the historic quarantine station before taking a challenging hike to the point and explore the mystery and memorable battery cages, bunkers and lookouts that survived world war 2. December to March is the perfect time to explore this natural wonder.

  • 5/5 Laurence S. 2 years ago on Google
Awesome place to explore early Victorian history. A quarantine station and army base at various times over the decades, from around 1845... Suggest riding your bikes around. Some steep inclines, so electricity helps!

  • 5/5 Adwait V. 1 year ago on Google
This was our third visit - different weather this time though. Always visited it in the summer before. It was raining that day (not pouring thankfully!) - we enjoyed a nice walk revisiting all the landmark places (Eagles nest, Harold Holt memorial to name a few) along the way. The views are wonderful- no matter what time you visit. There are certain tracks that are off-limits because of unexploded bomb shells - best to stick to the main road. Cars are not allowed all the way to the bunkers (where they also have twin cannons) - there is a shuttle bus that you can make use of - a welcome service offering for the elderly and requiring assistance. There are bathroom services at the entrance and also inside the premises.

Very beautiful place with natural flora and fauna and wind swept dunes and both sandy and rocky coastlines. Access by road on shuttle bus or walk along excellently presented pathways. Many interesting features like wartime concrete bunkers, army and navy training grounds and lookout structures give you a impressive view of the coastlines.

Great spot for a walk, beach view was beautiful, very quiet. Don't recommend taking the beach path though as you have to walk through bush to get back on the main track. It was nice to walk to the detention centres except for the flies.

Huge national park that can only be explored on foot. You gotta park your car and get steppin', toilets are sparse so make sure you go. Lots of information on the ruins around and great sights to see. There's a shuttle bus from the car park by the information centre to the fort on the point but it doesn't run to schedule. Watch out if you think you're going to get the last bus back because it will probably be too full to take you on peak days.

The furthest point of the Mornington Peninsula. Good riding spot. Beach is picturesque on a sunny day. Would recommend going to Fort Nepean, as there you'd see most of the military structures and views toward the Bellarine peninsula. Still worth it even though some of the forts are closed due to safety concerns. Bikes aren't allowed up the fort Nepean hill area, but bike parking is available. Toilets and drinking taps available.

Interesting to know the story behind this site especially after Covid lockdown to see how the old quarantee facility was like long time ago.

we only went to the Quarantine area because there were no shuttle buses at that time We went there, I had foot surgery 6mos. ago and can't walk for a long trail yet... No private car allowed to go there, only shuttle bus, bike and walking are allowed to go around..

The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, with outstanding coastal scenery and panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay. The old Quarantine Station was the highlight offering an insight as to how a large number of new Australians spent their first few weeks in their new country. Would have liked to explore more but ran out of time

Fantastic area to walk around. The car display of classic cars is amazing, and so much fun wandering the area.

Good place to visit with family. An hour walk or you can take the bus to the fort. Good views on the way.
