We caught up with friends for lunch and Axil was the venue of choice being conveniently located near home for them. We stayed almost three hours and I appreciated staff not attempting to hurry us out. I also appreciated the absolute mound of avocado I got with my smashed avo. It was a simple but tasty rendition with mint, lemon and feta, classic smashed avocado done right. The fritters and baked eggs that the others ordered also looked impressive. I love that you can see photos of the dishes before you order so you know exactly what you’re in for

A recent visit left much to be desired. Service was disappointingly slow, and the new staff seemed oblivious to details; ordered sides were missing. It appears there's a new management and the changes have impacted the quality. Hoping for improvement to restore the cafe to its former excellence

Awesome spot to have a brunch/lunch. We ordered: 🍽️ Zucchini, corn & haloumi fritters w/ poached egg, avocado, crispy sweet potato, spinach & tomato relish 🥘 Horseradish & chilli scramble on rye toast w/ sauerkraut cured salmon, broad beans, peas, asparagus, heirloom beetroot & charred lemon [GFO] 🥞 Red velvet pancakes w/ raspberries, black sesame ice cream, cream cheese ganache & chocolate brownie soil [V] Zucchini, corn & haloumi fritters along with Red velvet pancakes has been on their menu since Day 1 (around 10 years) and they are both worthy of the permanent place. The fritters are full of flavour and the tomato relish is superb - super refreshing as it cuts through the richness of all the elements on the plate, yummy! The Red Velvet Pancakes is also amazing and being the only dessert on the menu, it did not dissapoint at all - rightly balance without being overly sweet and the raspberries element is super fresh on the palate too. All the dishes we ordered were outstanding and we can't wait to come back again. On top of that Coffee was sensational and the service was exceptional - highly recommended place for brunch!

First time eating at Axil. The coffee was good, but the food was terrible, which is disappointing considering all of the positive reviews. We ordered three dishes. None of which were any good. Firstly, the baked eggs (or should that be egg?) were accompanied with cold toast. The peperonata had the consistency of a soup and couldn’t be eaten with the provided knife and fork. The inclusion of whole coriander seeds meant the dish just tasted of coriander seeds (duh). Secondly, the salmon fritters were visually unappealing and not nice to eat. Finally, the scrambled eggs and bacon on toast were swimming in oil. Three unfinished dishes. Last time eating at Axil.

A decent cafe in Hawthorn. I came here on the weekend with a friend and we ordered the fritters and baked eggs. Be mindful that there is a weekend surcharge. My friend really enjoyed her coffee and baked eggs. The corn fritters were good, however, I found them underwhelming compared to other reviews I’ve read.

Great decent sized brunch / lunch cafe. Coffee was good and the staff were really friendly. Very busy on a Sunday so recommend getting in early. The Eggs Benedict was delicious.

At Axil, I feel like their coffee is one of the best I have ever tasted. The tang from the coffee and the milkiness/creamyness from the milk just makes the latte a great coffee. Their food, in my case is the Eggs Benedict and the Fritters are both amazing. The hollandaise sauce is creamy and tasty and the eggs are cooked to perfection. Both plating are amazing, shown in the pictures. Overall, Axil has one of the best Coffees I have tasted and their food is amazing. 100% would reccomend :)

Good decent coffee worthy of the hype and reputation. Had coffee take outs a few times, yet to sit down for food. There’s always a crowd for dine in and a line for takeouts. Didn’t quite enjoy the surcharges and holiday surcharge was 20%.

We where looking for a place to have a breakfast today and this was the only place open in the area. We were not disappointed. The service was quick and the place was full but plenty of sitting still available. We quickly ordered and got exactly want we ordered quickly. The facilities are clean. The staff is nice. The prices are reasonable by today’s standard. Overall, highly recommend for a breakfast or just a coffee and dessert.

Great space, quite versatile menu, beautifully crafted food, excellent taste, delicious coffee, and very friendly staff, all and all a great place to be for brunch/lunch. Parking available around, can get busy on weekends but still no problem to get a table. Will certainly be back for more.

It’s the New Year’s Day and the coffee shop is of of few restaurants opened and packed with people. The food and coffee are good with enough selections. Service is excellent and outdoor seats under sunshine is beautiful.

Such a find , arrived in Hawthorn, needed coffee, this is the best place. Food amazing, generous, fresh, exceptional taste. Coffee great, just needs to be a little hotter. Thoroughly recommend to all ...

Coffee was good, they kept up with their reputation. Service staff were polite and helpful. Only concern was the coffees arrived 30 mins after ordering and after we had finished our meals. Otherwise they have a great menu with all your usual options expected at a reptile table cafe/restaurant.

It’s the home of the Australian and World champion barista…. What else? The place is big but usually very busy: great food and generous portions, family friendly, and nice atmosphere. Definitely recommended!!

On a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon, we decided to visit Axil Coffee Roasters, and it turned out to be the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some coffee. We were fortunate enough to find a table outside in the sun, and it instantly set the stage for a delightful experience. The staff at Axil Coffee Roasters were incredibly friendly and welcoming. From the moment we entered, they greeted us with warm smiles and made us feel right at home. Their enthusiasm and knowledge about their coffee selection were impressive, and they were more than willing to answer our questions and provide recommendations. The atmosphere of the coffee shop was relaxed and enjoyable. The outdoor seating area was bathed in sunlight, creating a tranquil and inviting ambiance. We were able to bask in the warmth while sipping our coffees, making it a truly refreshing and rejuvenating experience. The indoor seating area also had a cosy vibe, with comfortable stylish seating that added to the overall charm. The combination of friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere, and outstanding coffee made for a memorable afternoon. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or simply looking for a spot to enjoy a cup of coffee, Axil Coffee Roasters is a must-visit. I highly recommend stopping by and indulging in their exceptional coffee offerings.

Before having Axil coffee, I thought the west coast of America had the best coffee scene in the world. I was completely wrong and Melbourne has some of the best coast roasters / cafes I've ever been too. Axil coffee was the first Melbourne coffee I've had and it was amazing. We weren't too hungry so we ended up only getting the Panna cotta. (I was not expecting this level of presentation at a cafe). We both ordered a soy latte and I bought some coffee beans to take home (which I cherished and rationed back state side). If you are in Melbourne, you should come here. If you are traveling from the states, you should absolutely come here or any of their sister locations.

We revisited this place because of fond memories of their creative dishes and relaxing decor. The place was a lot less busy than previous times but the menu is still just as intriguing as before. Our Smoked Salmon Terrine balanced Creme Fraiche and crunchy Ciabatta slices with the main attraction. The Ham Hock Benedict rested on a bed of potato rosti, combining the savoury meat with the slightly sweet beetroot relish. Both dishes came with 2 poached eggs and a small forest of salads. The design uses lots of greenery to create an open and relaxing feel to the space. Service today was perfunctory and staff didn't seem to be in a good mood, detracting from the experience; 3.5 out of 5 today.

The batch brew was smooth and full bodied, not bitter. Generous portion of two cups. The latte was described as good.

Sadly I have to say I had a pretty disappointing experience with my brunch though I had hoped it was worth the price and their reputation. The expresso shot was good but not so impressive, this could be just my taste bud. However, the beef brisket I had was so bland. It felt like there was no seasoning at all. The best part about it was that the meat was tender. My friend had smoked salmon terrine, which was a little bit more flavorful but still unimpressive because she had to dig hard to find salmon 🙂 The worst part? They were more pricey than other brunch cafes, and there was no lactose-free option for white coffees 👎

Great place spot with friends. The spice chai leafs was amazing, has goji berries and raisin, you must try. Recommend

The Beef burger schnitzel was terrible 😫. Oily, flavour less. $27.50 for terrible food no worthy.

Highly recommended this thick prawn toast! I didn’t expect it’s so amazing. Creative healthy recipe and great taste. Perfect with long black and don’t miss the greens.

Overrated, overpriced, mediocre service. I asked one of the servers to recommend between two dishes as I’ve never been there before, I got no reply but a look that said “I’m too busy for niceties” I ordered the fritters, which was ok, nothing special. Coffee was regular Melbourne quality. Nice to try out, but probably won’t be going back.

Coffee was some of the best I have ever had. On top of that, the food was delicious and the service was impeccable. Very satisfied with this place. Will go when I am in Melbourne next.

Excellent cafe serving consistently excellent coffee. Been here a few times now and it’s definitely consistent - top quality coffee, food, service. Great food menu that has something for everyone. The cafe space is beautiful with plenty of tables, and there is additional outdoor seating on the sidewalk. Very popular place too!

Bustling cafe with beautiful decor and top notch coffee and food. Absolutely no complaints at all. I'd recommend their baked eggs and pumpkin gnocchi.

My first visit to this famous local coffee roaster was disappointing. The coffee was pretty good and the latte art pattern on my cup of coffee was impressive. However the food here was way below my expectation. I ordered the Benedict egg with beef brisket. The hollandaise sauce was foamy, not rich and tasted too sour, probably because of excessive lemon juice in the sauce. The egg was ok but the brisket was a disaster. The meat smelt strange when it arrived, and tasted bland, like a overcooked steak instead of a juicy brisket. I only had one bite on the meat then decided to pay and leave. I may give it a second shot in coming weeks since I saw so many positive feedbacks but will avoid the beef brisket dish for sure.

Had a late lunch at Axil-ordered the fritters and a coffee. Both were amazing! The crispy sweet potato on the side was very yummy. Nice flavours in the fritters and the coffee as always was great!

AXIL COFFEE ROASTERS – The Roastery What a lovely coffee encounter Today, just before heading out to Sydney, I went to visit Miss Mook at Axil Coffee Roasters in Hawthorns. I received a warm welcome 🤗 and a great coffee suggestions: a filter coffee, a magic, and a single origin espresso. Of course I also ordered an Aussie breakfast; 🍳 eggs on toast with a sliced avocado 🥑 [you can have it crushed too]. The Colombian 🇨🇴 filter coffee was beautiful, with a lot of depth, a lively, yet well balanced acidity, and a red wine acidity and bitterness. I liked the dark fruit notes and the tamarind flavor, very unique and pleasant. The magic 🪄 came with the seasonal house 🏡 blend: the milk was brilliantly textured, super sweet and smooth all the way, and it was poured very nicely 🦢. That is what I expect from a specialty place ❤️. The coffees from Brazil 🇧🇷, Costa Rica 🇨🇷, and Guatemala 🇬🇹 cut nicely through the milk 🥛. Well done 👍🏼. The breakfast was delicious too: I especially liked the warm eggs 🥚 on the crunchy and buttery 🧈 toast. The contrast to the cooler avocado 🥑 was a great match and the fresh lemon 🍋 rounded this breakfast up perfectly. To finish my breakfast I enjoyed a single origin espresso from Guatemala 🇬🇹: El Buho [Maria Vides], washed Caturra with notes of caramel, nectarine, peach 🍑, and citrus 🍊. How much better can you start into your day. Thank you Miss Mook for the great hospitality and lovely chat. You made my day ☀️. And thank you to Anthony, Jack, and Matt for the additional espresso cupping in your training room 😉.

Great to see Axil still surviving and thriving. Food was great, atmosphere was great, staff were great. The turmeric crepe with pork belly was yummo. Of course, the coffee was excellent.

Coffee and food were delicious and good quality. The food took over an hour to be served after ordering. Staff seemed unable to communicate with each other properly. Prices have gone up on the menus. $4 to add an egg and $6 to add bacon

We dropped in for a brunch with a friend. The place was busy, but service was reasonable. Coffee was very good, but the food not so much. While one dish was nice the other was the most overpriced smashed avo ever - not properly broken up, with literally nothing added to it except those few green leaves on top. Definitely not made by anyone who could be called a chef... Sad.

Axil has become my go-to coffee shop whenever I’m in Australia, and it never fails to impress! The ambiance is cozy, the staff is friendly, and the coffee is consistently excellent. However, what truly steals the show for me is their baked egg breakfast – an absolute delight that keeps me coming back for more. The eggs are perfectly baked, and the flavors are a symphony of deliciousness. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Axil is a breakfast haven that deserves a spot on your must-visit list.
