Most animals here were confiscated from private circuses and home zoos due to the nationwide prohibition in 2015. Even though the story is not the happiest, the animals here are in better conditions than before and their own health is under supervision of zoo keepers, zoo vets and animal biologists. There is a hard work behind those bars and hopefully they find a sanctuary with enough space or bigger facilities in other places. In the meantime, their life condition is the priority and they gained weight and are monitored all the time. Many people see a lot of species for the first time in their lives and maybe it would be the only time they could do that. The zoo requires a lot of resources for the number of animals they have, and some new baby animals are walking their first steps here. I do not know if they accept volunteers, but any kind of help shall be appreciated not for the money, not for the name, but for all the animals there. This planet is from every living creature which exists, so let's work together to help those cute eyes enjoying their existence. It is difficult to see both sides of the bars and it is easy to judge, but really, it is a big job to take care of them. Do not take me wrong, I appreciate any effort to make them feel and live better, and each of them has a previous story, for sure sadder than I can imagine, but now the pros are giving a hand to keep them healthier considering they have no other place to go so far, because natural habitats are not an option due to their previous learned habits. Super busy day when we attended. Animals certainly could use more space to roam and play, but hey, it’s a zoo. It’s a place where animals are in cages for us to observe. The other nearby zoo has a much nicer layout for the animals, I might suggest that the city considers removing this zoo and combining the monies to make one incredible one instead. There are lots of vendors and small rides for kids to enjoy as well. An overall good experience minus feeling that the animals weren’t very happy in their environment.

It's honestly the worst zoo I've ever seen! In general animals shouldn't be held in captivity. But this is a different level! The cages are way to small for the animals. They are not acting naturally and just sit in a corner. They even have five tigers, three of them white tigers. One tiger was just walking up and down in the back of his cherish! Don't go here to see exotic animals or to be entertained! If you really want to go here do it and experience how animals don't behave and how bad the situation actually is!

The park is beautiful and the playground semmed very fun. As for the zoo, some of the cages were big and seemed very nice but other were way too small. I get that it's a free entrance zoo and I shouldn't expect it to be perfect, but some enclosures were so small it made my girlfriend cry :'(

I’m typically a skeptic and don’t really like the zoo concept, but seeing the animals healthy is a welcome change from some I’ve been to. After viewing the animals we took in a little quad ride and some target practice with paintball guns.

Good place to hang out for a few hours. The zoo is shady, well laid out and it has some interesting exhibits. My favorites were the big cats like the lions, the jaguars, the pumas, and the panthers. The monkeys seem to be the main attraction for kids and they (the monkeys) can be quite entertaining. Some of the cages seem crowded but the animals are well fed, and they seem healthy and content. Decent and inexpensive food court where we had chicken tamales for 15 pesos each, kibi (not sure that's how it's spelled), for 10 pesos, and chicken empeñada for 15 pesos. The entrance is free, so that makes it a very inexpensive day out. There is an ice cream parlor in the food court as well, but it was closed when we visited. Great place to bring the kids, and if you do, there's a free mini train ride that they are sure to enjoy. Have fun!

Dirty dingy, old, rusty, decrepit look gates. The security looked tired and bored. I asked around and it never has been updated. The animals are fed but it really doesn't look well kept. The gators look lifeless and the liger looked unsettling and pacing staring at a wall 3 pins down. It looked like the small animals facing the park are all able to be stolen. We rode the gondola and it was rusty and a very short ride. The place is free!

If you’ve been to many high quality zoos, you will likely find this one depressing. The animals are all in small cages (chain link fence, oftentimes alone). The zoo is so small that there can’t be a big area in the back for them to go at night. The hippos have 2 pools, but only to stand in. A lion, a few tigers, a chimpanzee (very sad to see alone). There were lots of kids on school trips there, so I guess it’s good they are learning about the animals. It’s free.

Truly wished I had read the low reviews in more detail prior to going here. One word to describe this place: FILTHY. Also, please do not eat absolutely anything from this place, my whole family got food poisoning. If you've been to other high quality zoos please avoid this one at all costs.

This is such a nice zoo/park to come spend the day at. I've been to zoos all over Canada, U.S.A, and Spain. And I have to say I'm very impressed with this one moreso. The animals looked very well cared for, and they had a nice variety to look at. The only downside I'd say is that the tigers and jaguars need more space. They didn't look too happy, and big cats like that need bigger enclosures so they can run around more. I loved that the spider monkeys were swinging free in the trees, and the iguanas freely roamed about. It was nice to get close to the peacocks and see them in a huge area just hanging out. There was also a train ride for only 1 peso. This was a nice addition that I've never seen in a zoo before. The ride took you around the perimeter of the park. It was nice to see the animals from that point of view. You won't go hungry here either. There's many food/dessert vendors. It's hard to decide what to have as all of the food options look and smell good. I ate an empanizado from the Maya original ricas tortas. It was tasty and filling. If you have kids, there's lots to do that caters to them, including some amusement rides and vendors for candy and toys to buy. It's a great place in nature overall for adults, kids, and families. :)

Free admission. We have been coming to Merida for 9 years and have never been to the zoo. We didn't know what to expect about a zoo in Mexico but we were impressed with what we saw. The animals looked like they were well cared for and had some pretty big spaces to roam around in. They even have giraffes, zebras, lots of tigers and lions, hippos, many birds, monkeys, turtles etc. Lots to see and it was very well cared for. There's a train running around the zoo for the kiddies and also a chairlift. There are lots of choices for snacks and food and there are washrooms on the premises. A nice day outing in Merida!

Definitely put it in your to visit places , I recommend this Zoo it's clean and very well maintained, plus you should be able to walk the whole place in under 1 hour , plenty of shade.

A wonderful zoo with loads of animals and activities when done. It's free and the rides are really cheap. They have activities for all kids. Such a fun experience.

Great little zoo for free! The stars are the birds and the big cats. Some of the pens are smaller but you can tell they work hard to keep them clean and the animals look to be in good condition. There is also a huge and very nice playground, a bunch of kid rides for about 20 pesos a go, and the train for 1 peso but ride early to avoid the long lines. They also have some good food stalls.. had the best torta ever for 30 pesos.

Free and fun. The animal enclosures are quite small, but the monkeys are cool. The train costs $1 peso per person. There are various food vendors and games for kids. There's a horse ride for $50 pesos. A cable car $10 pesos. So you can get by on not much cash and have a good day. Avoid high traffic times, it gets VERY crowded.

Nice place to visit with children. Probably you will spend about 3 hours.

Upon reading the reviews, I thought how bad could it really be! It was worse than I expected. It was very hot and humid during my visited and most of the animals didn't have water. I don't know much about tigers but I've never seen different species living in one enclosure. Two hippos were in a pool smaller than a typical home (in-ground) size swimming pool. I say this not knowing the details behind the facility operations and history of these animals. This may be the last resort for some and I don't blame the animal care takers who are most likely do what they can with the funds/resources allotted.
