😠 Disappointing. The door to the gift shop was locked, so I tried calling the phone listed but got no response. When my wife and I walked to the house proper and tried the door it was unlocked and there were chairs in what appeared to be a waiting area. We stood waiting, confused and unsure if we were... This is the oldest building in Galena IL and actually one of the oldest structures in Illinois. This building is made completely of limestone and was built into the side of a large hill. The house is just cool to stop by and admire but, there are guided tours. I highly suggest paying for the guided tour, it's $10 per person and it's about a 30 minute tour of the outside the ground level and the top floor. The guides are very knowledgeable and know everything about the house and all of the items in the house. The guides know all the back stories of the people who lived in the house and what they did day to day. Don't miss this one. It's one of the more fascinating history tours.

Disappointing. The door to the gift shop was locked, so I tried calling the phone listed but got no response. When my wife and I walked to the house proper and tried the door it was unlocked and there were chairs in what appeared to be a waiting area. We stood waiting, confused and unsure if we were in the right spot. The tour guide said hello and she’d be with us in a minute. She came around the corner a moment after, confused as to why we were there. We explained that we’d like to go on the tour. She began to berate us for trespassing (while the door was UNLOCKED, and the gift shop was locked and unattended). After some snide remarks to myself and my wife (“well I’d RATHER NOT give you the tour”) we opted to leave and not pay for a tour. Incredibly disappointing as we’d been looking forward to it and love local history. By far the worst experience I’ve had in Galena. Galling unprofessionalism and customer service on behalf of the tour guide. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the house from the OUTSIDE. While there are no longer gruff miners within, there is still a walking lump of lead inside!

A great tour! The guide goes above and beyond. So friendly and knowledgeable. A very interesting tour, made even better by the narration and explanations of out guide. Thank you so much for going out of your way to return my service dogs' stuffie!

Oldest house in Galena built as a trading post in 1824. Interior is well restored with period artifacts.

This was a great tour. A lot of history on the house and the town. The guide definitely knows her history. It merits a stop while in town.

Finally my husband and I were able to take the tour. Our tour guide was very sweet and knew alot. The inside was awesome and had us thinking way back on History. And let's not forget Ranger, coolest dog ever.

Very creepy!! Went on the walking tour and our group was small enough the leader let us tour the house quick!! Absolutely beautifully kept house with lots of history and creepy stories to tell! Definitely a tour I'd go on a 2nd time!

Very interesting attraction, but we had to leave before we could get the tour due to an excessively long wait, even though we bought tickets in advance. I love history and these old attractions, I hope they can get a little more organized to get people through more efficiently.

Terrible worker at the front desk, bad mouthed the people at the Belvedere mansion stated they always rip us off. Very unprofessional and just dumb, they sell a ticket with both venues.

The tour guide was absolutely stellar. She was passionate and amazing. She was great to talk to and she 100% not being paid enough. We arrived just as she had a big group and couldn't fit us then told us to come back for the next tour and she would wait. She even waited for our little girl who had to go potty right before the tour began.

👍👍 We are RT 66 fans and really enjoyed seeing all the cars in Galena! Very small town without much to do, but well worth a drive through to look! When we arrived, the actual Cars on the Route store looked permanently closed, but you can still see all the cars on the outside.

👍👍 I LOVE this place. Nature is my church, water is my element, and this place just brings so much peace, adventure, exploration, serenity, crystal clear waters, nature trail, and a CAVE! Although, apparently everyone else loves it too, because it is always busy!!
