I was surprised that there was such a nice and big sports center in the Higashi Shinjuku area. The place is big and the facilities in it are very many and complete. Starting from the gym, fitness, swimming pool, tennis and others. Tickets for one-time entry range from 400 to 500 yen depending on the type of exercise you are going to do. The information center staff is inside and in the center of the building, so it's easy to ask if there's a problem. The staff is also very friendly. This place is very friendly to everyone, young and old, then to foreigners. Even if you look at the photos I posted, it seems that LGBT people can also exercise here. Here also sell some sports equipment near the center information center.

25m Pool, 8 lanes, 400¥ entrance fee, nice staff but the facility could be re-newed. I would go again. Open from 9:00 - 22:00

I know the pains of looking for an affordable and accessible gym. Hopefully my review will help other tourists get a quick workout so they still feel good during their trip. The sports centre is about a 10 minute walk from the subway station. A tip, look out for the "orange court" plaza area, you can cut through this and the center is right behind it. Before you attempt a work out, make sure you bring a pair of "indoor shoes" basically an extra pair that you didn't come in with. When you first enter, you'll need to purchase a ticket from the vending machine. Luckily there is a button that is English marked and says "training gym 3 hours" it costs 400 yen so put your money in and select this button. After you receive your ticket you'll give your ticket to the entrance staff, they'll mark your ticket. The training gym is on the 2nd floor! Once you see the training room, show your ticket to the staff in this room, they'll ask you if you brought extra shoes. If you are a first time member, they'll make you sign a quick waiver (in English) and give you a card where you will write your name. This is for them to attach to your ticket so they can give your ticket back after. After you finish up that stuff you can go ahead and change into your gym clothes. They are lockers you can rent for 100 yen, you'll get your money back after you return the key. What's available: 1 bench for chest, 1 squat rack (an area for deadlifts) about 4 benches and some free weights. there were a bunch of machines as well but i didn't pay too much attention to them. They have a queue system, you must write your name on the sign for whichever machine you want. There's a time limit of 30 mins for this. There are towels around the machines too, wipe down your station after you are done! Please note staff will tell you to hush if you get too intense about your workout. Don't grunt too loud. After you are done you will sign out and get back your ticket. If you plan on returning hang onto the card as well so you don't have to do the waiver thing again. As you exit, you'll just drop off your ticket into a tray. Happy workout!!

I went there for free weights training. There is 1 Rack (plus deadlift platform) and 1 bench. They will grant you a 30minute slot. So try to avoid rush hours. Staff is helpful (I don't know any Japanese). 400 yen, bring your own shoes, use a towel. Easy.

The Shinjuku Sports Center is one of the Municipal Sport Centers available for inexpensive drop in. Anyone who travels frequently knows that finding a local gym that allows simple drop-in workouts at a reasonable price is pretty tough. A solution in Japan is to go to a municipal sports center. Though most of the centers are not as fancy as a ‘western chain’ like Anywhere Fitness, the outstanding customer service, cleanliness and attentive staff will make you happy you decided to come. We priced out a drop-in at a local Shinjuku Anywhere Fitness at ¥1,000 per visit. While a drop-in at the Shinjuku Sports Center costs you ¥400 per visit. A real value for the price.

I went to the training gym. Lots of new equipment but sadly no rowing machine, no drinking fountain and no showers available. The changing room is tiny as are the lockers. Best to avoid this place.

I have been going to this gym for over a year, I have other subscriptions so I don't need a gym membership. The staff is really friendly and it is a good place to work out. As of 9/29/2023 they have updated their policies for the free weights in the workout room limiting the time 20 minutes per use (previously 30 minutes which was awful for those waiting). In addition, up to two people can be counted for each use alleviating the strain for those on standby. Though many will still complain, this is a major improvement from before allowing more customers the chance to use the area. This is a community gym, and an absolutely great one for the price you pay to use, if you need more time on free weights maybe consider a membership at a 24 hour gym. For all your other needs, I highly recommend this facility!

Nice employees, great price since it's a public gym. There is a ticket machine to purchase a day pass. You'll easily spend 6 times this on a private gym like Gold's. The equipment unfortunately is minimal and they do utilize the confusing time slot system for certain equipment that you see around Japan. Also they will force you to use weight clips (dangerous), again this unfortunately is typical, don't bother trying to argue this rule. If you have never been to a Japanese gym, shoes are required and also for sale at this one if needed. Nobody asked about tattoos here but they are probably not allowed to be visible. If you need a frequent gym, just get a membership at an Anytime Fitness, and you can use this membership at any location.

The Shinjuku Sports Center, located in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, is a comprehensive gymnasium situated in the Okubo area of Shinjuku. It was originally named the Shinjuku Ward Comprehensive Gymnasium but is now commonly known as the Shinjuku Sports Center. This facility was completed in 1984, marking the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Shinjuku Ward. It was the first district-wide comprehensive gymnasium built to meet the rapidly growing demand for sports facilities, which previously had been accommodated by opening school facilities to the public. The sports center offers a variety of facilities and activities for individual use during specific open hours. These include a heated pool, training room, large and small gymnasiums, first and second martial arts halls, a Western archery range, a multipurpose court, and a room for young children's physical education. The availability of these facilities might vary depending on the day and time, as they are occasionally reserved for group use. To use the facilities, you can purchase a ticket from a vending machine on the first floor on the day of use. However, be aware that there are specific conditions for using each facility, such as time restrictions and age limits. The sports center accommodates a range of activities like badminton, volleyball, basketball, futsal, table tennis, swimming, and various training exercises.

Great sports center, so many practitioners of various sports and martial arts in the middle of Tokyo!

It is well equipped, but the way the free weight room is managed makes totally unpractical to have a good training

We went to the free use hall and stayed for 3 hours for very small money. Clean, not crowded, and very helpful staff

Decent spot for a tourist to work out, 400 yen for 2 hours and 200 yen to rent indoor shoes. Only thing that sucks is they don't open until 9, so can't drop in early before your day starts. Unfortunately it doesn't look like you can do that anywhere in Tokyo without paying a fortune at a place like gold's. Older equipment but the price is right.

It's no exaggeration to say the building and the gym equipment feels like they haven't been updated since the 1980s. The staff are good and 400 yen is very reasonable, but wouldn't it be better to charge 500 or 600 yen and actually update the equipment, re-plaster the walls, etc?

The staff was very unprofessional and did not inform us of the time slots for use on our first visit. When we arrived, it was full and we had to wait a long time before we were able to play for a while, only to be told that we had to leave to make way for other customers. When we spoke to the staff, they said that we had not consulted with others and that we could not refund our tickets because it was against the rules. This was the first time encountering such poor service in Japan.
