The service here was delightful and I had a great time chatting with the brewmaster and staff about their beers. The selection covered much of the spectrum of beer styles from light to dark, sweet to dry, and fruity to more savory tastes. The staff were very knowledgeable and fun to talk with - they even let me do some office work here and accomodated an outlet for my laptop! I would highly recommend checking out this place! P.S. They also gave me a fresh baked cookie made from the spent grains of a recent brew batch. Very yummy 🍪

Poor atmosphere, poor service, okay food. The lighting in the venue is horrible. After sunset it's dark enough that any seat not directly under one of the dimly lit overhead lights will have trouble reading the menu. I had no idea if the nachos I had received had the pulled pork on them or not unless I pulled out a flashlight. Service was slow. Was it busy? Yes. Was it known that it was going to be busy? Yes, this was a planned event. We arrived before it was busy, it still took nearly ten minutes to get an initial drink order in. By the time we did multiple soft drinks and beers listed on the menu weren't available. Flights took so long to arrive from the bar that everything was room temperature by the time it was on the table. Soft drinks were consistently flat. Despite asking three times for more water to be brought to the table to help combat the uncomfortably warm venue, the server never brought any. Food orders were submitted and, despite appetizers being ordered as appetizers, everything was submitted to the kitchen to come out at the same time. The deep fried cheese curds were flavourless mush. The nachos, while listed as coming with hot sauce and sour cream, certainly don't indicate that the hot sauce and sour cream will be poured all over the pile of nachos and not served on the side. Not a fun surprise. As noted above, I wouldn't have known there was pulled pork on them had I not pulled out a light to check. The event was meant to be a ceilidh, and while the band which was brought in were top notch, they were practically inaudible in the small venue. When asked to split the bills, the server disregard the instruction and combined bills which shouldn't have been combined. Overall, an entirely disappointing evening and I see no reason to return to the venue in the future.

So here's the deal: this is probably the best Sunday brunch spot in HRM. Because it's seemingly "undiscovered," there's no wait for a table and food is fired immediately- we've always gotten our courses within 10 minutes max. And THE FOOD. The scrambled egg tacos are literally one of the best brunch dishes I've had in HRM (the others are next door at Canteen). Everything we've tried has been delicious. The staff are wonderful, and the vibe is friendly and unpretentious. Bonus points for excellent music every time we've visited. We've pretty much decided that Sunday brunch at Root Down is a new household tradition.

Checked out there new location for the first time and what a disappointment. We made a reservation for the patio but when we got there we were told that there was a “Boat Cruise” coming and they patio was booked for them. We were there for a few hours and still no boat cruise. Our server was very rude and slow. One person wasn’t drinking and the server seemed very offended about this. Food was a bit over priced for what it was. Especially since side hustle is just across the street. Just a all around bad experience. Will not return even though we live 5 mins away.

The four of us stopped in to try the beer and a meal. Ended up having excellent Oysters and music from 4 talented ladies. Disappointed to find out there was a cover charge added to the bill. We had no idea. On the way out we noticed in small letters the cover charge. No complaints about the show, you just shouldn't be surprised when you look at your bill.

Unfriendly staff. Horrible communication skills. I walked in at 6:15pm with a group of 8. The hostess sat us and let us know there was live music at 8pm and we would need to pay $10 cover. The music started at 7pm which I thought was them warming up and the staff would let us know at 8pm that we would need to pay cover or we’d have to finish up and leave. A few of us ordered food around 7:15pm which took a while to get there, so by the time we received it it was close to 8pm. No one came over so I thought they were being polite and letting us finish the food and drinks we ordered. At that point the band was sitting with their friends/family at a table close to the stage and not even playing anymore. I asked for my bill and when the waiter hands the machine over says he's added the 20% gratuity to the machine already. And the $10 cover was added to the bill. When leaving I questioned the amount that was charged for gratuity and cover and he said its normal practice to add for groups of 8 or more, which I would have been fine with if it was told to us prior to sitting down and ordering. And said the hostess told us the incorrect time. During the conversation he also tried to tell me we were informed about the 20% gratuity which none of us were so essentially calling me a liar.

Love their chicken. Don’t love how every time I order it’s made different.. No sauce/ way too much sauce. OR all the sauce on the side.

Enjoyed drinks and apps here while listening to the live music. Their local wine (tidal bay) was very good! The nachos were also quite tasty—interesting mix of hot and sweet flavour. However, a few people at our table found the nacho chips to be a bit too salty. We had a great time here, and glad we chose it to celebrate our last night in Dartmouth with family.

This place was loud! But the food was great. I wish we had seen the patio out back it may have been quieter out there. Excellent selection of wines and beers and this was the first time I'd seen multiple dark beers, stouts and porters on a menu. I hope I can find this brand the next time I'm at the LC.

Really cozy looking place in Dartmouth. Would definitely recommend the food. It was served quite fast and well prepared. Would love some more options for food. Huge collection of drinks to choose from. The server was really nice as well and offered us discount on the drinks for the slight delay.

Drinks were okay, never had the chance to get food, our server made a small mix-up with our order but she was overall sweet and friendly. We DID however overhear the bartender making some comments about our party on the way in, she gave some noticeable attitude towards us too when asking any questions. Somewhat soured the experience.

Great clothing shop which reflects their brewery and New Scotland clothing and merchandise. Very friendly and informed staff service in the store. The Tap which is the adjoining restaurant is very cozy. Live music in the evening. Nice deck and patio overlooking the Halifax Harbor. Service is fantastic, very friendly and informative. A small jewel and small business in the center of downtown Dartmouth.

My spouse and I had dinner at New Scotland Brewing Company last night. They have just opened their new location about 2 months in. There are some growing pains. We did not have reservations and we, like everyone else wanted patio seating, but it was full. We waited a little long to get seated and we’re offered a great selection of beers but a bunch of the taps were not working. We ordered our food and it arrived within minutes, almost too fast. My wife ordered a glass of wine but it got behind a bunch of flight orders so I had to ask for it. The response was that” I put the order in” Food was really good, much better than pub I had shrimp pasta dish and she had exceptional good gnocchi with Brussels sprouts. We look forward to going again when they get the front of house / back of house better coordinated.

I was there after the Christmas holiday and before New Year's, with my parents who were visiting. The food we had was good but it wasn't setting the world on fire. I can't say the menu is designed to attract any demographic over 40. My biggest issue was the beer. We had two flights of eight different kinds of beer. Six of them were warmish to cool and four them were just plain flat. On their side, they did have four tables walk in right away and they seem to be a little understaffed. When I mentioned it to the server they kind of addressed it half-heartedly and then shrugged and walked away. I understand things happen but they could have at least pretended to care.

The food was amazing, the beers were even better. The only downfall that there wasn’t any changing tables. Our server realized quickly our need for a changing table, and brought myself and my baby to a side room so I could change him. Hopefully they get some changing tables soon because this is a great restaurant for families with strollers. Lots of space and relaxing atmosphere.

Great space, great staff and great food! We did a tasting of 8 beers and all were really good. Loved the roman fried artichoke and halibut cheeks and chips. Their menu is well balanced and we would have loved to try a few more dishes...but so full!

Pretty sure this was the first Nova Scotia craft beer I taste-tested on vacation 2018. Fast forward a few years and we live here. Handcrafted beer is one of the best things going in Dartmouth-Halifax. Hop on the ferry and visit New Scotland for fresh brew and branded gear.

Great atmosphere, really great drink options! The Alderney Dry Lager is for sure worth a try! The fries starter is amazing and delicious! They have amazing live music concerts which really brought the place alive! Will go again!
