Super amazing experience even for those who are particularly scared of bugs. The experience was very interactive and great for the family. The last stop in the Insectarium was the butterfly and big garden. We were greeted with a lot of butterflies roaming the garden, caterpillars, various stick bugs, and leaf cuter ants. Would recommend experiencing this journey into the bug's world.

We went to the pre-opening event of the Insectarium. First time visitor to the Insectarium with my friends. Some highlights were the gorgeous building, insect enclosures with a lot of butterflies. Definitely a soothing experience to give a treat to your eyes with the color and beauty of nature. Though we did have a great time, there are a few things I would recommend to make the experience even better, which is why I did not rate it higher. There is not enough signage throughout the insect collection. It would be easy to know a bit of information about an insect if you put a digital monitor or information card in front of each collection. There were a few times where we were not sure where to go or what insects we were looking at/for. The app is helpful, but we don’t want to have our phones out the entire time since we’re trying to enjoy the nature and animals.

Last time I went to the insectarium was 10 years ago so I was excited to see the new one! While we enjoyed our visit, there was basically only 2 rooms with live insects, the small observation room with like 5-6 species + the butterfly garden thing. While both where interesting and gorgeous, we found it lacked content, the visit was a short one and there wasn’t much informations available on the species, I wanted to see big spiders crawling around, I remember there was also a live beehive display at the time and it was really neat but it lacked any of that. So in all and all, a really interesting place but kinda expensive for the actual content you get.

The place it pretty small. The person who checked our tickets and ushered us in was very forthcoming about the size of the place. She warned us- it’s a pretty small place so take your time! She managed our expectations from the very beginning! Even though it is small, it’s a very well kept place. Would have loved to see more live specimens though. The butterfly park upstairs is breathtakingly beautiful. Our 5 year old loved the place, but 14 year old didn’t.

What an amazing museum. They redid the insectarium and it is worth a visit. The staff are exceptional and the museum and beautifully laid out. The butterfly room is beautiful and a joy to walk through. At the end they have a room for kids to draw comics which was filled with happy kids. The centre room with specimens was clean and well laid out. It’s worth taking the time to read the information about the specimen. I recommend downloading the app.

Beautiful space. Visited with a 18 month and a 4 year old, we spent 50 minutes there total. Only negative I would say is it's very small, only 3 different spaces to visit. If you walk fast you can easily be done in 20 minutes.

A very good place to bring kids for education. Although I was expecting it to be bigger than what it found out to be. Entry ticket is included in botanical garden visit which is $20.50 for adult outside QC. I would say it is bit expensive for what it offers. Average time spent in insectarium is 1h-2h.

Came for the Botanical Gardens. I'm not really into insects, so I dragged my feet going into the insectarium with my partner. Turns out it this was the highlight of our entire trip to Montreal. This insectarium was incredible. You start by walking through these tunnels that simulate an ant colony. Then you go into this room with thousands of bugs preserved in these glass boxes on the walls by color and theme. We spent 30 minutes just going through all the individual boxes in this exhibit. Just when we thought it couldn't get better we walked out into a huge open air 30 foot high greenhouse full of butterflies and moths and gardens for them to pollinate. There were also other bugs like milipedes and leaf cutter ants. The butterflies were all around you and very healthy. They had fruit out for them to eat and I got some great photos of some gorgeous butterflies. It was truly magical and even now almost 2 weeks after leaving we still talk about how cool this insectarium was. Bug lover or not, anyone should try exploring this exhibit. It is an amazing time!

This is an absolutely mind-blowing experience worth doing, even if you are not a fan of insect. Believe me, I am not either, especially when they crawl around or near me, but they are such a fascinating and amazing creatures on this planet and this place pays them an excellent tribute! It is surprisingly a very popular place (yeah, I've heard that!), therefore book your tickets in advance. Only a certain number of people can be inside at certain times. We got kind of lucky and were able to secure a ticket on the day of our visit, however with the first available slot 3 hours from the time of purchase. Our time of entry was 5:30 PM and we were worried 30 minutes for a visit is not enough (the Insectarium closes at 6 PM), however this was just the last entry as we were able to stay until 6:30 PM, that was the time when staff was trying to get us to exit. I found that one hour was a perfect amount of time to experience everything! All amenities are located at the ground floor such as lavatories, locker rooms and ticket selling counter. Please be aware separate ticket is needed in order to enter the botanical gardens. There are couple of section on the ground floor worth visiting. First one would be section where you can see how insect perceive the world through their eyes, how they see things differently given the anatomy of their eyes or how they can see ultraviolet light as oppose to humans who cannot. In the other section, called Head-to-Head, we were able to sat in front of a booth featuring live insect and observe how they behave, eat or mate!  However the most fascinating section on the ground floor was the dome - a round room with showcases of specimen on the wall. Truly breathtaking view of more than 3 000 insects, bugs, butterflies and many more! The square showcases are arrange by color (its truly shocking how pure red color is rare in nature) in the upper row and on the bottom row they are placed by their evolutionary characteristics, so you can see for example leaf-looking like insect, insects with the largest antennas, insect that feed on specific substrate (plants, flesh), or the difference between males and females. It is really cleverly done as there are pictograms around to help navigate visitors, however I wish the explanations were more ''on hand'' available, not only inside the interactive machines near the entrance/exit. But apparently you can download and app and read about them on the phone, which is handy! In the dome, there are also some seat available. It was truly mesmerizing to watch the showcases of all the specimen, they were very tastefully done. I really enjoyed it! The upper floor is the one where we got to interact with the insect! We could get as close as we wanted to them, which sounds scary, but it was not! The creatures that are immediately visible are the butterflies and moths, but I have seen them before in other places so it was nothing jaw-opening for me. It was nice, but its really difficult to spot a sitting butterfly with open wings. However seeing giant Africans centipede up close or watching Leafcutter ant at work was beyond my expectations! I loved the ants so much, they are such an incredible creature and watching them ''at work' was simply breathtaking. This experience trumps any National Geographic videos! One other kind of insect that cough my attention - however it took me some time to spot them - were the ''walking sticks''. Its really hard to see them (duh, they look like branches that are part of the plant), but there are signposts to help visitor to detect them, so pay a lot of attention here. Unfortunately there were a lot of people just passing by without even stopping and admiring these creatures. The overall experience is wonderful and great, and I loved all of it, but I could not shake off the feeling that it could have been more intense, to have more animals here, but maybe its just me. I didn't end up loving insect, but I gained a new level of appreciation for them and that is just wonderful! Visited on a Saturday, July 2023. Paid by card.

It is an amazing world of insects. The atmosphere is well designed for the museum. The specimens collection is charming and I have never seen such a beautiful aspect of the insects. What’s more, when you enter the open area where you can be surrounded by the flying butterflies, you can feel the kindness of nature. In a word, it is such a charming place that I would recommend anyone who goes to Montreal to visit.

What a lovely little museum! I wish it was bigger and I wish there were more bugs! I bought my ticket at the kiosk upon arrival and it gave me an entry time for 30 minutes from them, but I went to the ticket scanner and was let in anyway. It took me about 1.5 hours to get through everything, and I was definitely moving at my own pace. It wasn't too too busy but there were definitely lots of children running around the space. Would definitely recommend taking your time in the butterfly and beetle round room, and then checking out the botanical garden on the grounds as well.

Cool little place to go visit. It is in a small little building and there aren't that many live animals to look at. The vast majority of this museum is displays and information.

I have no reason to refuse this place. Magnificent is the word I can describe about the insects here. Kids gonna love this plafe for sure! They are doing some renovations now, I hope it will be finish for summer. I would like to go there with my kid again. We bought a pass for family it's cost 150$ for 2 adults and 3 kids under 17. Then you can go anywhere you want in the list of Space of Montreal on the website. It become cheaper and save lots of money for family activities. Highly recommend!!!

Visiting the Montreal Insectarium was an absolutely captivating experience! The diverse and beautifully curated exhibits showcased the incredible world of insects and arthropods in ways I had never imagined. The attention to detail in each display, combined with interactive features, truly brought these tiny creatures to life. I was fascinated by the variety of species, their unique behaviors, and their vital roles in our ecosystem. The knowledgeable staff added depth to the experience by sharing fascinating insights and answering questions. Whether you're an insect enthusiast or simply curious about the natural world, the Montreal Insectarium offers an educational and awe-inspiring journey that's well worth the visit.

Super cool, loved it! Brought my 3 year old and she also loved it. The rooms are all engaging, and the butterfly area is so pretty. I like that they take some insects out for display so you can see them up close, and the areas in the open area specifics for certain insects, very cool. It's a little on the small side, but totally worth. It's a little expensive the larger your family, and I'd highly recommend getting a pass for Al the facilities if you live in the area.

Really disappointed in the insectarium. my son is an insect lover and we wanted to see a variety of live insects, but the only variety is stuffed insects. my son was really sad not to see living spiders, beetles or other insects. The butterfly garden is interesting, it is really nice. The boutique did not have much to buy as a souvenir

A great collection. Kids loved it. $20 per adult is $12 to park is a steep price to pay for the size. Took about 45 minutes. All due fairness we skipped the botanical gardens which is included. Unfortunately the biodome was closed because the package would have been great.

Great place to take the kids to explore and see all kinds of insects. I strongly recommend looking for tickets online as only a certain amount of people is allowed every 30 minutes. It has tight corridors, even though they accept it's recommended to use strollers. If you can, bring an ergobaby to make a good experience for everyone. Despite its tight corridors, the Insectarium is accessible friendly. They are equipped with elevators and ramps.

Honestly an amazing museum to visit. It's been renovated and is very well done. Just wish there were more exhibits with live insects. It gets very crowded in there and is unbearable when kids are shoving. The butterfly room is amazing. Worth the visit just for this. There's so many flying around, and many other bugs hiding in the trees and the bushes of you look close enough.

  • 5/5 Madhusudanan R. 11 months ago on Google
Best way to visit is to get the passport and do it all at your pace. The whole visit takes no longer than 45 mins to an hour. The parking cost here includes the big park too but it would have been beneficial if there were short term parkings provided for insectarium guests. Kids loved the place

  • 4/5 Cameron S. 1 year ago on Google
Huge diversity of insects to see! Make sure you buy your tickets in advance as they can sell out quickly! Sometimes there's a live exhibition where you can hold the bugs. Be sure to check out the time for those. You can probably spend 1.5 hours here at max (without kids).

I would suggest that you take a flashlight as there are passages at the start of the tour that are dimly lit. The exhibits are incredibly beautiful and interesting. Well worth the visit. Clean washrooms, nice cold water fountains. The live, flying butterfly atrium is spectacular!!

Was a great enjoyable day. The tickets are affordable. I’ll have to visit again with adults next time because bringing kids they get impatient and I was hurried. Those insect displays were so awestruckingly (yes I made up a word 😅) fabulous. The only reason why I deducted a star is because the best part was seeing the live insects and there was only one display, there should be so many more. Can’t wait to go again and truly appreciate it.

  • 5/5 Yorick H. 1 year ago on Google
Really awesome! Loved seeing all the live insects in their habitat. Sometimes “educators” came by and told interesting information about the insects. In particular we loved seeing the leaf cutter ants doing their work. The butterflies flying around were quite nice too

This place wasn’t part of our trip but im glad we went. It was a surprising experience, especially the part that we can interact with butterflies in the upper green house, where we entered their tropical habitat. And there were also a entire ant colony that shows you their process of retrieving foods. And did i mention the massive collection of bugs they had, It was just a nice little place to go to, loved it!

We had a delightful time at the Insectarium, especially with for the little one. Stepping inside felt like entering a whole new world from the perspective of an ant. The kid absolutely loved it and gained a lot of knowledge from the experience. The only downside was that the journey was a bit on the shorter side, as we managed to complete the visit in around 45 minutes. Nonetheless, the place is stunning, and the sight of butterflies fluttering around added to its beauty.

The Montreal Insectarium (French: Insectarium de Montréal) is a natural history museum located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, featuring a large quantity of insects from all around the world. It is the largest insect museum in North America and among the largest insectariums worldwide. It was founded by Georges Brossard and opened on February 7, 1990. Its average attendance is 400,000 visitors per year. It displays both live and dead insect collections, from butterflies to bees and ants. It is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions, along with the Montreal Botanical Garden, Montreal Planetarium and the Montreal Biodome. Seen from the sky, the Montréal Insectarium resembles a stylized insect. This can also be seen from the observatory of Montréal's Olympic Stadium.

Very cool little place. If you're going to visit the biodome and wanna extend your day it's definitely worth buying the combo pass for all the attractions. It's not the biggest place but there's still lots to see. If you wanna trip out your kids make sure to buy some cricket chips or lollipops with worms or crickets in the middle at the gift shop 🤣🤘🤙

Used to come here so much in my youth. Had an ant colony and stick insects, Butterflies, among others. Very nice place.

Interesting, informative, fun! I especially enjoyed watching the bees at their work. And walking in amongst the butterflies and having them land on you is magical.

This place is a must visit especially with the kids. It's creepily awesome with both live and fossilised exhibits. Plus you can buy insect snacks 😁😂 An excellent collection of different varieties of insects, beetles, butterflies and what not. Can easily spend at least an hour or two exploring and reading up about them. Don't miss the stick insects. You might even get a chance to let one explore your hands 😎 Check out my Instagram @srkwithlove for more

Very educational and organized. My kids loved watching the ants cutting flowers on real time! They also loved trying to find where the real live spider and other bug where inside the "fishbowl"

The insectarium is lovely! There is a lot of information about how insects experience the world, including a camera that shows how insects with compound eyes would see you! The insect and butterfly/moth room was amazing, I have ALWAYS wanted to see leaf-cutter ants. I could have stayed all day watching them take little bits of leaf off a plant, fall, and make a trip back with the plant bit. They were adorable!
