Great location in downtown Monterey but the rooms are not that great. Originally booked a standard room, but had *awesome* view of the public walkway. We could not even open our window shades or else people could see directly at our room. We upgraded to a studio suite but our Studio Suite had this constant vibration/buzzing. The bathroom had a leftover bottle of shampoo from another guest under the vanity that my toddler found. Overall, would not recommend to stay at this hotel if looking for a nice room - only book for convenience to downtown or conference center.

Attended their Christmas buffet in the Club Room. After tax & 20% gratuity, it was $100 per person. The prime rib was excellent. Unfortunately, the halibut & turkey were very dry. Salads were good. The green beans & Brussels sprouts in a balsamic glaze was not impressive by any means. Desserts were very good. I would not do it again. Our server & other wait staff was good.

Our visit to Monterey on this visit was because "sea lions" had invaded fisherman's wharf, so we stayed at this hotel overnight. The hotel is beautifully situated 450 feet away from the famous Monterey Fisherman's Wharf and the long sandy beach.  The hotel has parking for a small nominal fee and the lobby is beautiful. The hotel has a good restaurant on premise but with a larger selection off grounds.  The rooms were very clean with all the amenities of comfort. Our stay was a pleasant experience and nothing negative was noted. I would recommend this hotel, especially for families.  And the sea lions didn't disapoint!

Our second stay and just as great as the first time. Easy check-in, great staff, fantastic location. We left something of value in our room when we left. The housekeeping staff turned it in and security contacted us and shipped the item to us right away. Thank you Yolanda and Orville for your honesty, integrity, and wonderful customer service!

Room was well appointed. We were put in an accessible room, which we did not request, but did not reserve until 5 days before arrival so that may have been the only king room available. The property is beautiful and in a great location with access to.downtown Monterey, the wharf, and many golf areas. They do.have a restaurant on site, the clam chowder was really good, but somewhat expensive for what you get. Staff was friendly and efficient, from front desk to restaurant to valet. I realized that I had left a couple items in the closet after we left. I contacted the hotel and staff was able to locate and send the items to my home. They arrived the next day! So grateful to the security team for recovering those items. We will likely be back to this property mainly for the great customer service, but also the location and the amenities.

We stayed here one night so we could go to the Aquarium. The rooms were nice and clean and I liked the decor. I didn’t try but I do think you can walk to the aquarium but it’s probably like a 30min walk. Which if we would have stayed longer I would have liked to do since it seemed like a nice walk. The only thing I didn’t like, but maybe ppl would actually like, is that they wouldn’t let us use the bellman cart for our luggage they required you to have them assist you. We just had so much luggage cause we over pack so I would have preferred to just use it on our own instead of having to unload everything at the front of the hotel. Other than that the stay was great, the hotel is in a nice location and there are many shops you can walk to. The hotel also has a restaurant where we had dinner and the food was amazing. I got gnocchi with shrimp, my husband got steak and my daughter ordered the kids pizza. Everything was delicious 😋

We had a great stay at the Portola Hotel. The breakfast at their restaurant, "Jack's" was very good. The location is perfect, it's a very short walk to Old Fisherman's Wharf and about 20-30 minutes to the Aquarium and Cannery Row. The room was clean and up to date. We'll definitely be back!

We loved this hotel so much. It is not a big or small but it is about right size hotel in town. Location is perfect for peaceful environment. Restaurants are around with a ver short walk. Good place and we will come back to stay here.

I loved my experience at this hotel! The room was very nice. The pillows and comforter was super soft. It’s right next to Fisherman’s Wharf and it’s less than 5 minutes to a nice beach. The staff was very friendly. I had trouble opening my door and a maid was very helpful. Great atmosphere and I had an amazing time. I will definitely stay again!

This is our favorite hotel in Monterey. Aside from the great location, the valets are super! Housekeeping is superior! I conduct my own “cleanliness test” by walking throughout the room and into the hallway in bare feet. Results: my feet are not dirty! Kudos to the Portola Hotel Housekeeping Staff! Our puppy loves staying here too!

I rented several rooms and 2 hospitality suites here for my wedding and it was a GREAT experience! From the moment we got there, the staff was so friendly and helpful getting all our bags up to our room. My in-laws had a ton of wedding decor and 25 cases of wine that we needed to store at the hotel for a night. They helped us unload everything, put it on carts, and get it where it needed to go. I had different reservations starting on different days for people who arrived earlier in the week versus later in the week. Every room ended up being available several hours before check-in which was so helpful since none of our guests were local. I also had to overnight something to the hotel and the front desk promptly called me when it arrived. In addition to the amazing service, the actual hotel was fantastic. There were multiple coffee shops, restaurants, and a bar attached to the hotel. The gym was great, and the rooms/suites were perfect. Based on what friends/family said who didn't stay at the Portola, the other hotels in the area are a bit more dated and don't have as many amenities. Can't recommend this place enough and for anyone planning a wedding - the hospitality suites are perfect for getting ready! If you request the ones in the spa building, one suite is directly on top of the other which was really convenient for our photographer to travel back and forth between the rooms.

Fantastic hotel with great, attentive staff. Walking distance to lots of key points, and gorgeous lobby. The Marriott is right next door but doesn’t have quite the lobby the Portola has. Looking forward to visiting against next year.

Our daughter's wedding venue was just in Portola Plaza, so we knew we wanted to have a room there for her to dress and get ready, and also for the newlyweds to stay in that night. It was PERFECT! The management helped us get an early check-in on the big day, the room was just lovely, and we couldn't have been happier! Thank you, everyone!

Beautiful hotel! Very clean and Service was great and it is centrally located! Really enjoyed our stay! We were celebrating our 32nd anniversary and they gave us a bottle of champagne!❤️

Hotel is clean and looks fancy, like the $500+ a night would imply, but the rooms are plain and ours had the tiniest window, hard bed, and nothing more appealing than a motel 6. No breakfast included. None of the staff tried to go above or beyond for anything. It's even a $5 a bottle for the water in the room. It took over an hour to get our luggage brought up even though we came in late night while it was quiet. We were so unimpressed that we checked out early and went to another hotel.

Absolutely amazing! It’s gorgeous, reasonably priced, and everything is top of the line. And it’s a mile from anything you could want. The rooms and lobby are so pretty, even the elevators. The staff is incredible as well. My only complaint would be there ain’t enough parking so you’re forced to use valet but it’s only $7 more than parking anyway so who cares

The elevators are state of the art!. They have filtered water dispensing throughout the hotel and I recommend that it is utilized. The tap water quality is poor in this area. The ocean is high in bacteria count right now and toxic waste has washed up. Highly recommend staying out of the water and enjoying the enormous amount of other amenities and attractions that the area has to offer.

Just stayed at the Portola this weekend. The hotel was nice but the restaurant was a little disorganized and even though it was not particularly crowded it took a long time to be seated and then ordering, chasing coffee refills and the like was very difficult. The location is great. Rooms were nice but the water pressure in the bathroom was dismal as was the Internet. I think in this day and age quality Internet should really be mandatory. This meeting (Sunday), around 8.30am in the room next door maintenance decided to start drilling and doing some work in the room. Was very loud. Not welcome on a Sunday morning especially. For the price it was a little underwhelming for these reasons.

I didn't actually stay at this place. I went there to eat at Jack's (the restaurant inside) & it wasn't the best. I ordered the coconut 🥥 shrimp 🍤 appetizer & I didn't taste ANY coconut. It was also served w/a side of really hot sauce of some kind & BBQ sauce... what? Others ordered the 24$ potpie, which they say tasted good, but I observed a lot of pepper being added... Our server Jesus was good & the other staff was also on point w/ water pouring😉 The Valle was unabservant when we stood out there (to busy taking about the event & counting tips) I had to walk up to the desk & interrupt them & tell them I had 2 for p/u.

My only complaint was the water heater. It seems like a timed cycle heater, so it switches on and off while showering. Which means that you get a min of hot water followed by a minute of cold water and so on. So taking showers was a bit cumbersome. But other than that, it's a great hotel and great rooms. The Jack Monterey and Crepes of Brittany restaurants are def worth a visit.

Written by my 11 y/o who loved her birthday stay here…”This was the most beautiful hotel I have ever been to. The view was great; not just outside, but in the hotel was so pretty as well. We brought our dog with, and all the employees were so welcoming. The location is great as well, because near by were dog friendly outlets. It was great to bring our dog along and eat dinner with us. They even had dog menus at restaurants near by. Right outside the hotel was a building connecting to the pool. Alongside the pool was the biggest hot tub ever. I would not consider the pool to be heated as advertised though. The gym was great and included treadmills, pull up bars, sit up bars, and free weights. The scenery inside and right outside was more than I could explain. We didn’t even see everything in the hotel. Best weekend ever. Couldn’t say enough great things about this place.”

This place is amazing! It's at a perfect spot between main street and the fisherman's wharf. A 4 minute walk either way takes you to candy stores, restaurants, ice cream, shops, bars, or the bay! Rooms are spacious, beds are soft, and the accommodations within the hotel are wonderful. Fitness center, pool, spa, full bar, outdoor fireplace seating. A great place to stay.

I always wanted to stay here years ago when it was under a different name and ownership, but I'm glad I waited. The experience was good, even though there was a huge conference happening and the rest of the hotel was packed with Senior Physicians and their families. The staff was extremely friendly and the rooms were very clean, if only slightly dated. The location is convenient downtown Monterey and at the center of nearly everything. Lots of cafes and restaurants nearby and Cannery Row is just a 1-mile walk up the boardwalk/jogging/bike path. The price wasn't cheap but it was worth it for the views and centralized location.

This hotel was absolutely amazing. The location alone was awesome at the beach, and the fisherman’s wharf is a very short walk away. It’s only a 10-15 minute Uber ride to the airport. The rooms were spotless and gorgeous! The beds were very comfortable. As an out-of-town guest, the in-room refrigerator is a very nice touch. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant and both were very appetizing. The bar was a happening place to be on a Saturday night!

I don't think any room is absolutely perfect. I mean the mirror in the bathroom had some kind of black spray paint all over it, the toilet kept making some loud water pressure noise every 5min & the shower was making a ton of clanking/pipe noises when in use. Other than those few issues, the room was really nice. We had our own private balcony & the room was spacious especially with having two babies too. What made the hotel one that I'll be returning too is the location & staff. The staff were so friendly & very accommodating and the location can't be beat! It's right in the middle of everything. All restaurants are within walking distance, the boardwalk and harbor are literally right behind the hotel & convenience stores are a 5min walk too.

We had an amazing stay here for our wedding anniversary! Naomi checked us in and was so wonderful. The hotel has charming rooms, a beautiful bar, and fantastic service. It's in the perfect location in Monterrey. We will certainly be back very soon!

The rooms are nice and large with amenities that are better than average. We have a room with a balcony, but barely enough room for two chairs. Not a big deal for us. Convenient to a coffee shop and local dining and the attached parking garage ($22) is perfect. 15 minutes to Pebble Beach and 5 minutes from Route 1. Would definitely return.

Excellent hotel and restaurant in the heart of the walking district in Monterey. Close to the aquarium, shops and restaurants. You pretty much don't need to leave a 1-2 mile radius of the hotel and can have a great 2-3 day vacation. The hotel itself is modern, well designed and high end. Of course, you pay for what you get, but it's reasonable considering other options in the area. If you're visiting Monterey, I strongly recommend this hotel.

Very disappointing experience. Not as luxurious as they claim. Definitely not 4 star worthy. First, they are a dog-friendly hotel which they advertise to be their biggest plus. It really is not, as it is a dog-friendly town and lots of hotels are too. Second, you cannot leave the dogs in the hotel room unattended, even if you want to head out for a meal. This little detail was conveniently missed out on their website and only revealed when checking in. Taking our dogs with us for lunches and dinners made our choices of restaurants extremely limited. We were only able to go to places that offered outdoor seating and this was in December. Third, their guest services staff were not only unhelpful, but outright rude. One of them even hung up on me as I was talking to her. I had to dial back to finish asking my question about their extremely slow internet. Fourth; and this trumps all others; they claim that the $50 per night pet fee is to clean up after them. And yet, we found a tick on one of our pets in the hotel room. See attached photo. Not only did we have to sanitize everything we brought with us to the hotel, but we are faced with sanitizing the entire house now to make sure the other ticks were not brought back. We have two dogs and that is the last thing we need. For the $ we paid, we really did not deserve this. Do NOT go to this hotel. What a mess! If there was a saving grace, it is their restaurant and valet staff who were really nice and even worked during Christmas Eve. We ended up giving them a rather generous tip for their commitment to an awful hotel. I hope they find a better place to work at. To the hotel PR team, please do not respond to this review with your boilerplate response and embarrass yourself.

We’ve stayed here several times in the past and recently stayed here for our 15 year anniversary. Absolutely beautiful hotel with spacious rooms and a wonderful lobby. The hotel staff have the best customer service and are always attentive to our needs. Valet staff are quick and very friendly and always had our car ready quickly. The Jacks restaurant has always been a favorite for dinner with their large fireplace, bar, and seating area. Have always loved sitting outside on the hotels patio and enjoying the fire pits late at night. Always a great choice for a hotel in Monterey and we will continue to stay here for years to come.

Front desk staff friendly welcoming and efficient! Location is ideal easy walk to wharf or downtown Monterey. Room was amazing. Bright with plenty of light and very clean! Very nice little touches such as dim able lights and ceiling fans made it that much more comfortable. Spent a week in Monterey amongst 3 hotels I and this one was by far my favorite. Won’t be staying anywhere else next time we visit. Thank you Portola!

The hotel is beautiful, we enjoyed the open, outdoor feel of Jack's restaurant. Everything we ate at Jack's was delicious. The servers were friendly and helpful. Checking in went smoothly. The clerks were pleasant and helpful. Our rooms were equally beautiful with adequate lighting, excellent WiFi, and we appreciated the cable connections on the desk and near the beds. We enjoyed the amenities in the room and bathroom. Our one suggestion is that we needed a comfortable chair in the room. The short couch was very uncomfortable, so not even usable. Otherwise our visit was perfect.

A great hotel in a great place! Monterey is so calming. The staff were very friendly, our room was perfect, very clean and tidy. Most importantly, it’s a pet friendly hotel and yet worth 5 stars to me. It’s usually very hard to find both pet friendly and good quality at the same time. Portola will be definitely our regular hotel from now on!

We had a fabulous time staying at the Portola. Our family especially enjoyed the pool/hot tub. The room was very clean and very comfortable. We will definitely book our next stay with you. Also the location was perfectly close to the wharf and restaurants as well as entertainment for the whole family.

We stayed here from March 27-29 2022 and it was a really great place to stay. It’s a really classy place. I really like hotels that are different than the usual mainstream places you see all the time. This place had unique bathrooms, lobby, and elevators. The elevators were pretty cool. Instead of the typical button you press to summon the elevator, there is a touch screen and you indicate which floor you want to go to. Then the screen directs you to one of the three elevators there. I feel like it was so much faster than a regular elevator. The service was great, they had clean rooms that were spacious. We even left something behind at the hotel (a toy one of the kids had), and they called us and offered to ship it back to our home so we wouldn’t have to come back.

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. I don't usually pay as much as I did for a hotel, but I absolutely got my money's worth out of it. The room was gorgeous, featuring a balcony, plenty of space to walk, sit, or lay, a pristine bathroom, and an overall classy atmosphere. One of the best parts is that the hotel is walking distance from so many amenities. The pier is right across the plaza, Cannery Row is about a mile down a lovely bike/walking path with the ocean right there as you walk. We even discovered a little pier between the main pier and Cannery Row that had at least a hundred seals and sea lions right there on the brake! The one and only bad thing I have to say about the hotel was the shower. The water pressure was very low and the water was almost a mist. It was difficult to try and wash myself under it. Additionally, there's no door on the shower, so it takes a while for the bathroom to warm up and not feel cold. But that's literally the only negative I had about this hotel. I think my family and I found our vacation spot for the future!

We had a wonderful stay at the Portola. From an easy, wait free checking-in to leaving was made trouble free and quick by all staff. The room was a good size with great views across to Fisherman's Wharf and Monterey Bay. The bed was comfortable, so we enjoyed a good night's sleep. The shower gushed a refreshing forceful shower and all was cleaned daily. No room service for food, however an easy 'to go' option for ordering and self-collection from the lobby was a speedy alternative. The Portola was the only hotel which offered to cancel our stay for free when covid restrictions came into force 2 years ago barring travel from the UK. We were impressed and very thankful. Thank you, Portola. We've thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
