The
natural
emblem
of
Montilla
par
excellence.
We
visit
wineries
and
winepresses,
Convent
of
Sta.
Clara,
House
of
the
Inca
and
the
birthplace
of
the
Great
Captain.
And
about
5
km.
From
the
urban
center
in
the
countryside
rises
an
impressive
and
solitary
mass.
Piedra
Luenga
is
a
mass
of
rock
that
is
located
in
the
area
known
as
Lagar
de
Rosarito,
six
kilometers
from
the
town
center,
in
the
heart
of
the
Sierra
de
Montilla.
Composed
of
dolomitic
materials,
limestone
and
red
sandstone,
it
is
a
unique
piece
in
the
countryside
that
has
managed
to
survive
the
passage
of
time.
In
fact,
the
rock
has
its
origins
in
the
Triassic
era
and
was
apparently
exploited
as
a
mine
during
the
Chalcolithic.
According
to
some
geologists,
Piedra
Luenga
may
continue
to
rise
in
height
thanks
to
the
interaction
of
the
African
plate
with
the
Eurasian
plate.
The
rock,
which
was
half
demolished
when
the
Cabra
highway
was
being
built,
continues
to
host
important
native
flora
and
fauna
that
make
this
place
one
of
the
most
unique
places
in
the
province.
Indeed,
the
area
is
characterized
by
a
large
number
of
birds
that
nest
in
the
rock,
safe
from
predators
or
hunters.
Thus,
in
Piedra
Luenga
you
can
see
examples
of
jackdaws,
crows,
kestrels
and
pigeons.
However,
the
most
relevant
species
is
a
type
of
small
falcon
that
seeks
quiet
places
to
nest.
Among
the
plant
species
in
the
area,
the
presence
of
dense
herbaceous
vegetation
at
the
foot
of
the
rock
stands
out,
such
as
thymes,
asparagus
bushes
or
small
ferns.
There
is
also
a
large
fig
tree
and
several
almond
trees.
