Extremely noisy and mouse ridden. The nightclub a few doors down kept us up until 3am most nights. It was so noisy that the earplugs and white noise machine provided were not enough. We expected it for NYE but it happened literally every night of our 5 night stay, meaning that we were exhausted all the time. One night we spotted a mouse in our room, coming in and out of the brick wall. It wasn’t afraid of us and scurried around the room. I read that Montréal is known for mice but Sonder really should’ve taken care to patch up all the holes in the brick wall as some bricks could literally come away in your hand. Everything else was perfect but the noise and the mouse cannot be ignored. Would not recommend staying here unless you like to stay up until 3am and don’t mind the mice.

I'm sad to be writing this review because I was really looking forward to our stay in Old Montreal. If I could give this experience a 0 star I would. Our code to get into our room was not working when we arrived so it took over an hour to get into our space. Once we were inside, the room was completely different than the photos. No fireplace, no exposed brick, and the space was much smaller. I understand the "fine print" states that the decor and layout may be different in each room, but this was complete structural changes. It was an entirely different room. When I called customer support, they said a manager would contact me in 24-48h. No phone call. So I called 4 days later and lady by the name of Emma stated there is no manger available to speak with customers and there is nothing they would do. It's interesting how rude they are once they have taken your money. So do not stay here unless you want to spend a lot of money to be catfished and disappointed. We stayed at the Hilton remainder of our stay and it was a wonderful experience.

I would really like to join fellow travelers with five-star reviews, BUT we've been having some difficulties clarifying an issue for two months now. First of all, let's be honest: the location is great, the rooms are spacious, equipped, and tidy, and the service with flexible requests is easy and convenient, so I would definitely choose them again. However, you have to make sure you document the state you leave your room in. We missed it, and now they want to charge us for deep cleaning while attaching and referencing pictures of a different room type to prove that we left a mess. There's not a single contact who can understand our situation, explain what is happening, or why they think we are the ones who have to pay for deep cleaning while our room was left appropriately. I think it's clear which type of room we were in, so we couldn't leave the mess in a totally different room. So except for the latter issue, you can expect a nice stay in Montreal here. UPDATE: Mystery was solved somehow finally, took a few months, but we could clarify ourselves in the end.

The location is great- close to several restaurants and shopping + old port. The room is spacious and doesn’t feel tight/small. Rustic feel, aesthetically pleasing. However, the room itself needs a major upgrade. The bed creeks with the slightest movement and could not handle two people- definitely felt like it was going to break. The pillows were very worn in and need to be replaced. The toilet seat even shifts when you sit down. The furniture is a bit worn in with stains. The bathroom counter/sink could use an upgrade as it had a few stains on it as well. The AC was fine but either too strong or not strong enough, no middle. Advice is to just upgrade the furniture- you can still keep the rustic feel bht with newer/safer furniture. :) Overall you’ll pay for the location. The staff was friendly and answered questions quickly as well.

The room had a clean, nice interior at a reasonable price. HOWEVER!! You won't be able to fall asleep until the nightclub closes(3 AM) right downstairs, even with the earplugs that the hotel provides(they know it'll be super loud, which is nice), with the white noise machine next to your bed. It's helpless because you'll not only hear the loud music but also FEEL the base, vibrations all the time in bed until 3 a.m. It'll be a good stay if you want to check out the nightclub downstairs and go to sleep after 3 a.m. But if you're looking for a peaceful road trip with good sleep, this is not a place to stay.

I recently stayed at Sonder at Penny Lane in Montreal and I was impressed by the spacious and comfortable one-bedroom unit. The bed was cozy and I was able to get a good night's sleep during my stay. The unit was also fully equipped with all the essentials, including appliances and consumables, making my stay feel like home away from home. The included Roku TV was easy to set up, and had a feature to automatically log out of my accounts at the end of my stay. Sonder is a tech-focused hotel chain that uses an app for check-in, so the process was pretty seamless and convenient. However, the entrance can be a little tricky to find since the building isn't really branded. Once I found the entrance, the app was easy to use, and the chat feature allowed me to request any additional items I needed while I was staying there. Overall, I would highly recommend Sonder at Penny Lane for anyone looking for a comfortable and convenient stay in Montreal. The unit was well-equipped, the app was user-friendly, and the location was convenient for exploring the city and quiet at night. I think whether you're in town for business or leisure, Penny Lane is a great option to consider.

Super clean, thoughtfully left supplies (blow dryer, shampoo and conditioner, wine bottle opener etc.), my husband and I felt very safe travelling with our baby. The only reason I gave a 4/5 stars on the room is because the bed was very hard compared to what we are used to. We will definitely be using Sonder in the future!

Very nice experience with location access and Sonder services. Be advised that, because it is an old building, the place was a bit noisy. I could often hear other occupants moving around the corridors and slamming doors. Some extra treatment in the apartment doors would be desirable. Other than that, it was all smooth and pleasant.

Perfect place to stay in old Montreal. Great for single or couple. Clean and has all you need for a great stay. Located across from access to underground city, right in the midst of great restaurants and bars, walking distance from the port and downtown. We even walked to mile end and Mount Royal. A bit noisy on the weekend but the host provided earplugs and a noise machine to make it bearable. Highly recommend this excellent stay!!!!

There’s only one word for this Sonder, abysmal. My friends and I were in town for Osheaga. When we were looking for places, Sonder popped up. One of my friends had a great experience in Nashville so we decided to go for it especially since the train to the island for the festival was so close. That is where the positives about this property end. I booked a “lofted” two bedroom. I think the first thing we noticed when we arrived was that it was not a loft and they gave us a general two bedroom on the second floor when we paid more for the lofted space. The apartment itself was in terrible shape in terms of appearance and functionality. The AC wasn’t working the first day and when I alerted the Sonder team via text chat to it at 7pm, they said there was no one on site to fix it. The agent was asking me to reset breakers in the hallway and bedroom to no avail. It was cooler in the hallway than it was in our room. After the lack of attention or response to fix it in a timely manner, my friends and I went to dinner and upon return, I troubleshooted the issue myself using YouTube videos to reset the unit itself. There’s also no AC in either bedroom so one of my friends opted to sleep on the couch because it was too warm. I asked for more towels during the interaction and received a text that the request was received. It took the Sonder team 18 hours and an additional request the next day to bring towels. Truly terrible response times from this team. I asked Sonder to provide a blanket for the friend sleeping on the couch to which they replied that they were out despite having multiple floors of rooms and multiple sites across Montreal, they were unable to find one singular blanket. Then there is the issue of cleanliness and lack of proper repairs in this room. The shower door was missing. Based on photos in other reviews, you can tell there is supposed to be a sliding door and you can also see the tracks/ stoppers in place but they just decided to not fix it. It’s obviously also an issue that’s been ongoing as the drywall at the base of the floor near the shower is eroding away. The paint is also peeling and chipping due to water damage. Every time someone would take a shower the floor would be soaked because the shower head shot water all the way back to where the door should be. We had to use towels just to keep the floor dry because the bath mat wasn’t enough. It also meant we were doing a lot more laundry of said towels so that they weren’t constantly soaked. The couch was stained which seemed to be a common theme around the building as well in common areas and hallways. The carpet in the living room area was taped down to the floor but no care had been given to put new tape down so the rug was peeling and curling at the edges and corners. It was not a new rug but you can tell very little care is given to this place by the Sonder maintenance team. As someone that manages multiple commercial properties across the US and Canada, this site is a major fail of operations in terms of cleanliness and maintenance response. My friend had a great experience at her Sonder in Nashville but she even admitted that the two experiences she has now had with this brand are night and day. It’s a wonderful idea in theory but a major fail in execution.

We enjoyed our stay at the Sonder Penny Lane. Great location, with the Metro entrance just at the corner! We were able to go all over the city by metro or on foot. Our room was very comfortable and large. It was so nice to have a full size kitchen at our disposal and the in/room laundry was terrific. No issues with WiFi - in fact we used our own VPN to tunnel to the US to watch the US open tennis on the laptop. The room was clean and comfortable and we had no issues with nightclub noise that others commented on. I did not miss having a front desk and we didn’t need to ask for any services so I can’t comment there. We did feel safe - the unit door locks worked really well.

Such a Great location to get around the areas of Montreal. The room was clean, comfortable, neat, tidy and well stocked with all you'd need for a stay. The Comms with the Sonder team via the App were great and any requests and queries were address really quickly. Overall I'd happily stay here again if in the city and thoroughly recommend it to anyone to consider to use it

Was pleasantly surprised to find that this was conveniently located in a prime area! Fabulous restaurants line the streets on the same block. Old port is < 5 minutes of a walk. Super safe. Many recommendations were in the vicinity. Found reasonable parking lots all around the area! Only catch is-- there is vibrant night life on the block if you're facing the back side of the blg. I'm from NYC so it didn't phase me but they provide courtesy ear plugs FYI. It was a perfect, comfortable stay. Definitely recommend!

Second time staying here. The rooms are clean and maintained. Right in old Montreal. Definitely would recommend. Pricing is no more expensive than a regular hotel in the area and you get way more space.

The room is very nice and very well situated. Comfortable bed. The only down side: the nightclub it's LOUD. It vibrates in your head until 3am. We stayed on a Thursday night, and it was so loud. Could not fall asleep until 3am. Tried the earplugs (provided) did not help also played white noise. Just a word of caution for anyone who has trouble sleeping. Just sucks to pay hundred of dollars and not be able to sleep. A light is out, cobwebs found and the front door doesn't open fully. Other than that, it's nice.

While the building and apartment we rented was lovely and spacious. The place was heavily worn. The furniture was stained and filthy as well as the carpets. We did not use the living room at all because we did not want to sit in the dirty sofa. Walls needed to be repainted as they were filthy and heavily worn out with marks all over them. The cement floors had holes in them that were disturbing for a place that charges a fair amount. The services are very poor. I had to spend over 2 hour or more to get someone to see the place and hope they would address all these problems. In the end. They did nothing.

The Sonder apartment we stayed in appears to have been renovated fairly recently and was clean on our arrival. The door lock took me a few uses to finally figure out how to wake it up, but it worked flawlessly. We were short of nothing in the apartment during our stay and all the appliances we used worked well. There is a record player with a few LPs in the apartment, but couldn’t find a power cord to make use of it. The main entrance and common hallways of the building are generally clean but nothing remarkable. We were worried about other reviews with noise complaints but we lucked out and experienced absolutely no noise, the beds were comfortable and the showers hot - all in all a great stay

The apartment was wonderful, but the staff were the best. Staff were there refreshing furniture when we arrived. We were about 30 minutes early for our early check in, but they were kind enough to let us put our luggage down and change so we could explore. Every time we saw them during our stay, they were pleasant and genuinely curious how our stay was. We had one issue that they happily took care of (someone was smoking in the apartment downstairs and the smell was coming into one of the bedrooms). They not only spoke to that guest, but they also used something in the apartment to absorb the smell. The walls are a little thin, but they provide sound machines which I loved! The view was amazing and it was in an incredible location: near Victoria's square, Notre-Dame basilica, and old Montreal. We will definitely be coming back!

Nothing to hate, everything to love about this place! Excellent location, super easy check-in/check-out, very attentive service/responses to queries, and a super clean/crisp and well provisioned apartment with everything you may need, including a full kitchen, iron/ironing board, laundry in the room, etc. They even left me three laundry pods (which I used!) and was super grateful for. 5 stars in my book! Will definitely stay again. By the way, I saw a few others complaining about noise, but I am a light sleeper and yet slept perfectly using the sound machine they left in the room (thank you!!!).

I was supposed to visit Sonder Penny Lane in August with my partner and what a nightmare this has been. This is such a shady company, and I can see why. Before diving in, make sure you have all receipts of correspondence. Screenshot/export chats, and get everything that is said in writing because they screw you over if you call. I had to cancel my trip about ~16 hours before checking in, as my partner was unable to fly due to illness. He was in no condition to fly and frankly could get other guests sick. Keep in mind, before this was happening, I paid for $55CAD for early check in Tuesday morning. I had to start planning cancellations around 9pm Tuesday night, and started the formal process around 12am on Wednesday. Sonder didn’t seem to care - when I called before cancelling to see my options, I was told I could get a refund if he was sick enough to be admitted to the hospital which was not the case. I was then told I can receive a credit - and to be frank, I didn’t care if it was a Sonder credit or a Sonder Penny Lane credit. I just needed to feel like I wasn’t losing $600+ ($800CAD+). The first customer representative assured me that a credit would be given, so I was able to calmly and confidently make the decision to cancel. When I called around 12am to confirm my cancellation, I was taken for a ride for 45 minutes. The customer service representative was willing to help, but management was firm that I was not allowed to get a refund (which I wasn’t asking for), I was not to get a credit, and my only option would be to switch dates and pay a fee. This is at 1230am when I’m trying to cancel my trip, I didn’t have new dates to offer so I asked if he could place some sort of hold and they were adamant on not doing anything except cornering me. I said I would make a dispute on my card because they can’t offer even a credit - I’m happy with a credit and a penalty, but being accommodating was the only thing I was asking for. I handled it with a lot of grace and was met with very unpleasant responses. Normally airlines are stingy but it was easier to cancel my flight than it has been for this booking. They wouldn’t cancel it for me and left it as it was and I followed through with my dispute. I called once more on Wednesday morning to try to see if I could somehow work to fix this, then I could cancel my dispute. The guy on the phone was willing to help, but I guess once they saw I made a dispute. his attitude changed and he said I’m going to go ahead and cancel the booking. I said ok, and it stayed active for the whole day. I kept getting push notifications on my app for it as if I was staying there. On Thursday morning, I woke up to a notification about my sonder. As I went to the app, I was signed out (and I hadn’t changed my password in days). I reset my password to sign back in, and got met with a: “Your account has been disabled” message in red. Tell me this isn’t shady in the middle of a dispute while your app is still giving me notifications? Beware - stick to hotel chains and save yourself the money and headache by not using this company.

We tried Sonder after being pretty disappointed by our last few AirBNBs. We are traveling with two young picky kids, so we wanted something with a convenient location and a full kitchen. Upon arrival, the pack n play we requested was not set up properly, and the air con didn’t seem to be working. However, we easily fixed up the pack n play ourselves, and the aircon issue was addressed quickly as soon as I alerted Sonder via the app. Generally we were very pleased with our experience at Sonder. The apartment was very clean and well-equipped with what we needed and nothing more (I mean that in the best way. More stuff just makes it seem more dirty and lived in.) the mattresses were a bit hard for our personal liking. Our request for more coffee filters and dishwasher pods was met within an hour or two, which was unexpectedly quick and so convenient to be able to ask for those things via the app as well. This location was also great. Right across the street from a metro station, and countless restaurant options within a block or two in any direction. Easy walk to Old Port. The balcony/patio was amazing, we enjoyed a lot of time out there!

Beautiful hotel room. Very spacious and in a wonderful location. We were within walking distance to so many different things we wanted to do. We drove and were able to leave our car in a parking garage around the corner. We have little issues in the room, but customer service and room service were very helpful and quick.

I stayed here as I booked through Airbnb , the building looks nice and the apartment itself was great, the location is great too, just a few blocks close to a metro station. What I didn't liked was the customer service and the fact that one day like at 4 am the garbage truck was somehow crushing crystal bottles for around 20 minutes.

The studio was immaculate, and the kitchen had everything I needed. The decor made it a nice place to enjoy when the temperature dropped 30 degrees and it was raining all day. Would dedo y stay here again and seek out other locations.

Sonder on Penny Lane was a delightful find for our recent holiday in Montreal. Centrally located in Old Montreal, the hotel has comfortable spacious rooms - well equipped for overnight or longer stays, including cooking and clothes washing appliances. The remote system for checking in and accessing the building and room (there is no check-in desk or resident staff) works very well and the instructions are clear and easy to understand. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and have no hesitation to recommend it for travellers to Montreal.

Great location… very comfortable and clean !! As soon as me and my wife arrived and tried to have access to our unit, the keypad wasn’t accepting our code - I called Sonder support and I was quickly answered by an agent (Kim). I was very frustrated when I called the support, but Kim was so helpful that the bad feeling turned into a “wow, that was the best support I’ve ever had!” - she took care of everything so quickly - making sure that we were feeling safe and well treated. The building manager was also great (Rodney)!!! 5 stars to the support!! The only thing I would say that needs improvement is - maybe a fresh coat of paint on the walls ? This is giving an outdated look to the unit. Apart from that, we loved our stay!! It’s walking distance from most places we wanted to visit in Montreal..!! It’s quite noisy at night, as it is located in a very busy / happening area - It has the downtown studio vibe. But Sonder provides earplugs- to help with the noise at night. Thanks Sonder!! We will come back!

Stayed a couple of nights for a conference. Excellent location, very close to the convention center. Lots of great things in walking distance and the area felt very safe. There was some minor water damage in the room from the AC unit leaving a small trail of water down the wall. The wall looked a bit affected, as did the floorboard. Did not look like serious damage, but it was noticeable. A very small issue though and overall I really enjoyed my stay. If I could give this 4.5 stars I would.

We loved our stay at Sonder Montreal. The apartment was very clean upon our arrival and had everything we needed. We did notice that a few of the light bulbs in the ceiling had burned out so I reported that. They were changed that same day! We will definitely be back.

I stayed in a two-bed, two-bath unit and found it spacious, stylish and modern;kitted out with many of the amenities of home making for a comfortable long stay. Each room provides a double bed. It would be nice to have the option for two single beds in some of the rooms. We found that only one of the two bedrooms was provided with aircon. Apart from that, the accommodation is wonderful and located in Old Montreal, full of beautiful European-style architecture, close to a number of restaurants and a few worthy sights. Definitely worth considering as your accommodation for your stay in Montreal.

Our 2 bed/2 bath apartment was very spacious and very clean! We stayed during the week and did not have any issues with noise. (There is a nightclub nearby where the noise could be an issue on the weekends. Note: Earplugs were provided). Great location in Old Montreal with many amazing restaurants within walking distance. Also within walking distance of the Metro at Square Victoria. Did not have any issues with remote access to the building or our apartment. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would book this location again.

The condo is in a nice area and walking distance to many popular sites. The unit is modern and spacious. The unit was stocked with everything you needed like your own home, appreciated the nice touch of having paper towels, dishwasher detergent, washing machine detergent, lots of shampoo conditioner etc. Very clean and large patio to step out and enjoy. Couple gripes we had were problems with entering the unit with the provided key code. There was a last minute change and we were notified, but neither codes worked when we were trying to access it. Delay was 30mins, but someone came quickly to resolve the matter. Also noticed a water leak from the pot light when entering the unit. Was not aware until towards our last night stay. Over all great weekend experience. Communication with customer service was good. Thanks!

Great location and nice spacious units. Originally we were on the wall closest to the nightclub and the noise was definitely a problem even with the provided earplugs. The bed also fell apart very quickly. Although I could piece it back together it wasn't stable. Thankfully customer service helped us move rooms and although the process didn't go smoothly (we got locked out of our room without our possessions when the changeover happened) due to some confusion on Sonder's part, the new room was much nicer and quieter. Aside from the bed frame coming apart, the beds are pretty uncomfortable with very stiff mattresses.

Although the check-in was smooth and the style of the suite was what I was expecting, unfortunately the room was much smaller than anticipated (think double queen-size hotel room size) and instead of a couch in the lounge area of the room, our suite had 2 chairs with wooden arms and metal frames which were NOT comfortable or at all in the way of a couch as seen on my reservation images. We had some cold weather on our visit and therefore spent a bit more time at the suite than I had initially anticipated so to not have a comfy lounge area and/or try and move the TV in a way so we could watch while in bed was a problem (photos of the suite was taken at 11am, with windows wide open and all lights on). In addition there was no wine bottle opener in the suite (had to resort to pushing the cork in with scissors on the first night!) and the shower had 3 metal brackets that couldn't be removed that because of the position of the shower head, made it difficult to not hit your elbows on, with your hands above your head to wash your hair. Despite my best efforts, I was not granted any portion of my paid upfront reservation fee in light of these inconveniences (I was really looking forward to a brick wall!). All in all, I felt I didn't get the room that I had anticipated and saw in the photos and that I had so carefully chosen within Old Montreal. Even if there are variations in the suites as stated in the ad, it would be appropriate to take the proper pictures. Also did I mention complimentary earplugs came on the nightstand? This is because there is a nightclub right next door. Didn't bother us but it might to other reviewers. The beats go on until the wee hours of the night.

Loved it! Perfect location between the old town and downtown. Beds were very comfortable. We stayed Thursday through Wednesday and apartment was quiet, even though surrounded by plenty of restaurants, green spaces and a metro station. Kitchen had everything needed and a/c worked great. All in all, a great place to stay!

Great place. The check in was smooth, as there is no front desk. Great location for walking about. My only complaint is we could have used another towel rack in the bathroom. Washer and dryer in the apt was very nice bonus. A discotheque next door but only loud Fri\Sat and they provided ear plugs. Great restaurants nearby if you’re a foodie.

  • 4/5 Lay D. 10 months ago on Google
Automated check-in/check-out was easy and headache free. Place was clean. Complimentary ear plugs, enough for # of guests indicated during booking, was a nice touch, as bar revelers can be heard when they're leaving the bars on a Fri night (music was nearby bars was NOT an issue). Otherwise primo location right on the edge of Old Montreal. Points off from being perfect: - lack of in-house luggage storage - lack of parking (though there's public underground parking nearby with cost similar to hotel parking costs) - extra cost for early check-in / late check-out, though I appreciate this is their monetization model Overall would recommend for quick weekend trip, especially if taking train and you don't need check in/out modifications. Quite decent price-point.

Great location. Great space for me, my wife and one of our adult sons. Easy access to all that Montreal has to offer! We were concerned about some reviews reporting noise from night life in the area. We did not hear anything. Slept great.

Easy check-in concept but we had issues with the code (and others did as well). You don’t need to see anyone to check-in so there is no wait pr processing time. Elevator is tiny but manageable. All in all the spot is cute, there is plenty of space on the rooms and they are cozy. They weren’t as clean as I would have liked (spiders, lots of dust bunnies, shower wasn’t very clean) but not horrible either, and because the floor isn’t carpet, I’m sure it’s easier to spot dirt. Great location but parking felt like a disaster

We were very impressed with the apartment, decor was lovely & well thought out. Kitchen well stocked with all you need, even dishwasher tablets! Great position in the Old town. We would certainly recommend this apartment.

The stay was fantastic. I had a studio room which was exactly as described. I did have a few issues with the tv working, but those were resolved quickly. The only negative was if your view faces the street there is a club a few doors down that is loud enough to be heard in the room. I’m a good sleeper, so it didn’t bother me but could be a major issues for others.

I had a wonderful stay here while in Montreal in December of 2023. The rooms were spacious but somewhat sparsely furnished and very dark in the evenings, as the lighting options are few. However, for the price I paid, the accommodations exceeded my expectations. The location is centrally located to many of the sites and is in a vibrant area of the city. I did not find that street noise was a problem for me, although it was very busy in the area on Saturday evening. Parking can be a little bit of a pain, but I eventually was able to take advantage of street parking overnight.

We loved our stay at Penny Lane. We had the wrong code to access our suite and had a very helpful person on the phone try to fix the problem. She eventually sent us a real person to reprogram the door and make sure we could get in and out. She stayed with us until things were fixed. The suite was very clean and had everything we needed. Note-there are only very basic cooking things( only salt and pepper) but it works. It would have been helpful to have had grocery store locations provided but we found what we needed. Old Montreal is a great place to stay and walk and explore. I would stay at this location again. It is close to the metro and we felt very safe and secure going in and out of the building. I would not hesitate to stay at another Sonder property.
