For what it is- dorm living, this place was great. We had a nice Japanese room all to ourselves, the bathrooms were nice, clean, and up to date, and we were able to do laundry. The staff was friendly and documentation was good. The neighborhood has great restaurants and Ginkakuji is close by and very nice. The bus station is also close by but I'm going with 4 stars because it's such a long bus ride from the station.

Clean and cosy, this is one of the best experiences I had staying in Kyoto. WiFi pockets and bicycles are generously provided. Also, the host was very very friendly and helpful. An overall awesome experience staying there. Highly recommended!

I loved this place. It smells musty, but it has tatami mats, 2 showers, a washing machine and equipped and thrifty bathrooms. You need a dryer (I don't mind paying ¥400 for two drying cycles). There is shared shampoo, free laundry soap and very good facilities. There is no noise at night since the rooms are not attached. The super comfortable futon. It has a kitchen and refrigerator. They accept VISA cards and it is in a magical place in Kyoto. There are 3 temples nearby and several food establishments nearby, including ramen, Indian, takoyaki and family market a few blocks away. The bad thing is that in the mornings and afternoons there are plenty of bicycles and you get more than one scare.

It was very comfortable. The owner was a foreigner and could only speak a little Japanese, but he was kind and we were able to communicate. It was convenient because it also served as a parking lot for rental bicycles. There were a lot of people traveling from abroad, so it was lively, but I had no problem sleeping at night. There were also several groups of Japanese people staying there.

The worst hostel we ever met during our 2 months trip in Japan. The staff is indifferen and always absent, you need to look for them all over the place and wait. The hostel indicates the hour od reception from 14 00 till 21 00 but there is NOBODY most of the time. The private rooms do not have any KEY. That means that when you make CHECK-IN and want to go out, you CAN NOT! Because it is not SAFE to leave the belongings in the room. We spoke to the staff if they could at least keep the luggage for one hour in their room, but they refused, saying that they do not want to be responsible for anything! Unbelievable. Conclusion: you need to bring your luggage with you or stay all the time in the room. SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE! The bed linen was not fresh, and we were obliged to sleep without undressing. The bathroom facilities and a toilet would need a good cleaning, too.

Great hostel! The best part is renting the bikes to ride through the city and the portable WiFi. This is a great place for tourists. You have your own private rooms with individual control of the AC unit in each room. The walls do a good job at blocking out sound at night and the neighborhood is quiet outside. We basically slept here, and showered here. I know they have a kitchen and washer, but none of us used these accommodations.

We spent two great nights in the Hostel Ginkakuji. The people there are really nice and there are a lot of travelers. They can also clearly help you to discover nice place in Kyoto. They don't provide toothbrushes and stuff like this so bring you own. We also had a hard time figuring out how the shower works there, but we didn't ask so that's on us.

Really lovely place where the staff are work and traveler are. At my time there I enjoyed it to talk to them and hear some storys. Also to meet other travelers, it's a hiden hot spot. Price is nice and it's not difficult to get to the showplaces from Kyoto. The look is old but everything works well.

We had a fantastic experience at Hostel Ginkakuji mainly due to the friendly and helpful owners. The facilities were clean and organized, giving it unique flavor of Kyoto. Sleeping on tatami and futon is truly Japanese style. I was always warm and comfortable even though it's the cold winter season. The free portable WIFI was super helpful getting around Kyoto.

Great experience to stay in Hostel Ginkakuji, where you can meet people from other countries. People at there are really nice and helpful. Hostel Ginkakuji is kinda like a foreigner-friendly place as the people there can speak Chinese and English. The hostel is 2min walk away from the bus stop. Also, you can rent a bicycle for 300yen/day. There is also a convenient shop (Lawson) nearby the hostel. If I'm lucky enough to have a chance to come back to Kyoto, I would definitely stay in Hostel Ginkakuji again.

We have just completed a week stay at this hostel and had a great experience. The hostel is basic but has all the amenities that a traveler needs. The hosts are excellent and make every effort to make your stay in Kyoto a pleasant one. The hostel is not in the centre of the city but the bus service in Kyoto allows for easy access to anywhere in the city. Thanks again for your warmth and welcoming nature.

Nice hostel near Ginkakuji temple, great location near bus stop. It is really clean and quiet. Rooms are well equiped and staff is friendly. They gave us indications for late dinner. Definetely a good place to stay for visiting Kyoto
