The Tungabhadra Dam, also known as Pampa Sagar, is constructed across the Tungabhadra River, The dam is in Hosapete, Vijayanagara district of Karnataka. It is a multipurpose dam serving irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, etc. This is a joint project of erstwhile Hyderabad state and erstwhile Madras Presidency when the construction was started;later it became a joint project of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh after its completion in 1953. The main architect of the dam was Vepa Krishnamurthy, ISE, Engineer-in-Chief, Hyderabad State, after Police Action, an engineer from Madras PWD. There is a dispute between Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka for the water of Tungabhadra reservoir. He argued for the stability and longevity of the Dam, built of Surki Mortar viz a combination of mud and limestone. Apart from Mullaperiyar Dam, it's the only non-cement dam in the country and has withstood the test of time for over 70 years, and may well cross many more decades.

Good place to visit if you are in the area. Although there was not much water in the dam, the garden and recreation area is beautiful. Definitely worth visiting but choose the season carefully. Best to visit after rainy season. There's a musical fountain which is only activated in the evening. You can spend a few hours relaxing. There's food available and also boating in a small lake. If you want time away from cities, you can stay in KSTDC hotel just outside the entrance to the dam. Good place to stop off if in a long journey, you can spend enjoyable evening at the dam, stay in the hotel and continue your journey next day

Beautiful view from here. Especially from August to October. Good place for a walk any time of the year. This place has a lot of scope for improvement. I wish there was a hotel here. Lake view and Indira guest house could be opened for the public.

You get a nice view of the majestic Dam. Best part is a garden dedicated to the Chief Engineer who was the main brain behind the project. For the first time instead of a politician, a real unheard of hero has been honoured and a statue of this great man stands proudly for all to see.

One of the beautiful dams I have been in Karnataka… entry charges are ₹10 per person and parking ₹30. As you enter there are buses that will take you to the view point. You can walk too its your choice. We decided to walk and enjoy the place. The dam could be seen from a far distance . You can take a walk at the place. For a panoramic view you need to climb around 100-200 steps upwards. The view from there is magnificent. Also there is a government guest house for government officials. It is suitable to visit in the evening. Also there is a TB dam garden where there are musical fountain show everyday at 7pm and ends at 7.30. There’s also an aquarium for which there is a extra ticket of ₹10 per person.

This is basically the backwaters of the tungbadra River. There is a small walk way around this area and there are benches to sit. A good place for a quick stop over.

The Thungabhadra Dam in Hospet City is a marvel of engineering and a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring the region. The dam not only serves its primary purpose of water storage and supply but also offers a picturesque setting for visitors. The vast expanse of the reservoir, formed by the dam, is surrounded by lush greenery and rocky hills, making it a serene and scenic location. It's an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic or to simply enjoy a peaceful moment by the water's edge. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the dam to learn about its history and the significant role it plays in the local agriculture and irrigation. The engineering behind the dam is impressive, and the guides provide insightful information about its construction and operation. Overall, the Thungabhadra Dam is not just a functional structure but a tourist attraction that offers a blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity. If you're in Hospet City, don't miss the opportunity to visit this remarkable landmark.

👍👍 With 33 gates, TB Dam is an engineering marvel. You cannot go near or walk along the dam, as it's restricted for security reasons. But if you pay 10rs and take the bus, to the view point on top of the hill, you'll have a birds eye view of the dam and the reservoir. You literally cannot see the end o...

👍👍 Location: at munirabad Landmark towards hospet to bijapur road. Water released but. Nice to see and enjoy current of flowing water. They need to build side wall on bridge. Slipping chances is more. So avoid bringing children or we have to take more care of children. All gates are not opened
