Have been there for an evening, the staff were nice although we were a couple of minutes late. For students there are special offers and even free philharmonic performances if I understood correctly. Culture yourself and listen to some class here

An excellent location, home of the Essen Philarmoniker (one of the best orchestras in Europe) and hosting a number of guest Orchestras and artists at world class level.

Listened to Bruckner's symphony No. 8, most moving performance by the orchestra

Fantastic acoustic in the place. Brave enough to play contemporary academic music. And play it as good as hell!

I am no expert, but I had the feeling that the acoustic isn't the best. I was sitting on the upper left side. A real shame if you don't want to miss all the details. Maybe next time try central sitting, even if it would be more expensive. Excellent Cabernet Sauvignon Luna (white wine) at the entrance bar.

Visited concert halls in Bochum Mulheim and Essen during the Rhur piano festival and the one in Essen is my least favorite, especially considering Essen is the biggest city among them all. Seats are incredibly narrow, definitely not enough (at all) instructions for where the seats are both outside and inside the hall, at least for non-German speaker. The park where the philharmonie is at is cute for anyone who wants a morning walk.
