If you’re looking for a great sushi restaurant in Kyoto… THIS IS IT! The sushi is amazing. Like best I’ve ever had, haha! It’s family owned and the family is incredibly kind and their restaurant has a great atmosphere. Plus, the English menu is really good with pictures and the son speaks English really well. I loved the number 1 platter and my wife loved the rolls. The sake testing was also so fun!

The best sushi I‘ve ever had. The atmosphere is special. Family owned restaurant, the son speaks perfect English, what makes life easier for foreigners. They accept credit card. Amazing fishes, service very special. Not cheap, but for the quality it is not expensive at all.

TUNA bowl and salmon sushi were truly amazing. I appreciated every single bite. The owner(son) speaks good English. That helped us to oder foods and enjoy the time. This place deserves 5starts!

The best sushi I've ever had. So fresh and prepared right in front of you. The owners are very friendly. Definitely a kid friendly place as well. Brought my 5 month old in with no issues.

Welcoming and gluten-free friendly. The place gets full soon, so I would recommend making a reservation or coming soon and expect having to wait. We waited for 1h, but it was worth it. Staff speaks English, and helped me choose the gluten-free options on the menu. They also had gluten free soy sauce. They recommended a sake that paired great with the amazing sushi and sashimi we had.

Very fresh sashimi and friendly service. The food they serve is same quality as locals eat. This place is mainly frequented by tourists, so expect not to see many Japanese. Good thing is all the waiters speak good English.

Fresh sushi and sashimi expertly prepared. Small cosy shop. Excellent service by father and son, and other staff. Very authentic Japanese cuisine.

Where do I begin. Simple. It was incredible! Highly recommend! Their seared bonito fish was delicious. But then again, everything we got was delicious! Especially their Uni and toro. Service was amazing, their sake tasting was tasty and it wasn’t too expensive! Try their abalone, it was spectacular. I recommend getting a reservation ahead of time to be seated. The whole family that runs the restaurant was so lovely and we hope we will be back in Kyoto so we can come back.

Highly recommend this 50 year old establishment when in Kyoto. The chef sat us down even without reservations. Fish is good quality and fresh and they accept cards.

I've never tried sashimi so fresh. It melted in my mouth! A very friendly, "home-like" service. The restaurant is family-owned and they're doing a great job! Definitely a must try if you're in Kyoto.

Unfortunately sushi was very bad. Sushi wasn’t served cold, taste/smell weird. Only the prawn tempura was good. Really surprised by the good/high reviews they have. Tourist trap. I’ve tried many sushi restaurants before but this one was really a turn off.

Our first sushi experience and we couldn’t have picked a better place! We had only ever tried California rolls or sushi rolls with cooked fish, so we figured Kyoto would be the perfect place to try nigiri and sashimi. This place is AMAZING! Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. I recommend sitting at the bar, but they also have a couple of tables. It is owned by a sweet family and they do a great job of ensuring you have a great experience. They are very quick to respond via email for any questions and availability. Be sure to make a reservation in advance! We will be dreaming about this place forever!

Honestly? Literally nothing wrong I can think of to blunt an excellent experience. If you are staying in Marutamachi or near the Imperial Palace, try this place. It's family owned, comfy, and very accessible for anyone English speaking. The younger staff, especially the son, makes it very easy to communicate. However the whole family appreciates and celebrates trying to communicate in Japanese as well, and they were quite encouraging. Any and all experiences you've had with sushi elsewhere in the west, and likely Japan I'll bet, will pale in comparison to Kikyo.

Great sushi place near our hotel. Fish was fresh and tasty. The uni was quite good. The restaurant is family run. They have an English menu and the son spoke English. We had a nice conversation with him over dinner. We got there when it first opened so it wasn't busy but I could hear people coming in to make reservations so it seems pretty popular!

Definitely one of the best sushi experiences I've had. Absolutely amazing sashimi, Nigiri and sushi. We had miso soups and deserts as well and they were equally as spectacular. If I wasn't leaving the country in two days I would definately come back a lot. Pricey, but quality. Fair price for what was given.

Mitsuru and his family are absolutely wonderful humans creating magic. Best sushi I’ve ever had and one of the best meals I’ve ever had - especially that toro… incredible. Definitely recommend making a reservation as they’re usually full - for good reason. Thank you.

It’s the best choice if you’re expecting a nice sushi and other cooked dishes like tempura fries or grilled fish, and also good sake. We got counter seats and enjoyed each favorite sushi and fried oyster with nicely selected sake. You can order sushi from one piece, which is nice if you want to try different kinds. The nigiri sushi prices are clearly written with the pictures in English, so it’s easy to understand. Oyster fries are fried with a dough, not bread crumbs, which makes the texture fluffy. You can’t miss it if you’re a oyster person. We finished with homemade funa sushi, funa fish kept with steamed rice for months. It had sourness and unique taste like blue cheese, could go well with thick sake or dry white wine. Try it if you love strong cheese and love to try the local food. If you’re interested in sake, ask for sake tasting, you can try sake not on the menu. English menu, English speaking staffs, offering gluten free soy sauce. Recommend to make your seats reserved in advance since it could be fully booked.

Truly an amazing sushi experience! There is a lovely family running the business and you can actually taste how much love goes into their food. Top shelf quality and freshness fish, straight to my top 3 sushi in Japan. Thanks for the warm welcome and excellent service - I will be back :) Kindest regards, JP

It was a really good dinner, best sushi I ever had. I really recommend it. I was able to book one day in advance and there was a queue for non reserved tables. Additionally they spoke really good English and had knowledge about food allergies (my girlfriend is coeliac and they even had GF soy sauce). This is a must while in Kyoto. Thanks for everything!

Perfect. Sake tasting set was amazing. Recommendations by the chef were mindblowing. The food was the best I had in Japan thus far. Insanely great. Love it. 10/10 would recommend. Had a sushi set Otoro Engawa Matcha pudding.

Very friendly, delicious food and sake. We enjoyed the quiet room at the back. The English menus were also great. Thank you so much!

We ate a lot. And all we had was great. The food isn't as traditional and crude as other restaurants, it's a bit more western oriented and that was great for us. Great beer, great food, great sake omakase. The chef also has very good English so nothing was a problem. And the okaasama of the family is so sweet. No star to deduct, just 5/5 all together!

Passionate about their craft here that has been honed over 3 generations. This was the best experience I’ve had in a restaurant across Japan, thank you for the wonderful food and service.

Really enjoyed the experience. We got to sit in the bar and see how they made the sushi, which was directly served into leafs in front of us. Fish was fresh and pieces were big and delicious. I would definitely come back. The sake was also really nice.

Visited mid April with reservations - this is my favorite sushi experience I've ever had. All the fish is so fresh and delicious. The family works super hard and it shows. If you want great sushi, this is the real deal. Our favorites were the medium fatty tuna, the nigiri combo, and the oyster tempura.

Mandatory to try the premium tuna Toro. They speak English perfectly. And also menu is in double language. Simple, Relaxing and quite atmosphere. Staff is fantastic! Very suggested.

Traditional Japanese restaurant in Kyoto. It was the first restaurant I had visited during my stay there. The son's owner spoke understandable English, so you won't have a problem ordering food or requesting something. They also English menu for you. The price was quite standard and the food was very tasty. The seafood was fresh and nice especially the fatty tuna or Toro. The place was normal size for this type of restaurants, I didn't reserve and didn't have to wait. Overall I like this place a lot.

What a wonderful find in Kyoto. First class service, excellent quality fish and foods, friendly staff, and a pleasant venue on a quiet street. The young proprietor of the restaurant and I had a nice conversation (in perfect English). I'll be back next I'm in Kyoto.

Friendly staff. Really fresh, authentic and delicious Sushi. The Sake tasting goes really well with it, definitely a recommendation! It was a lovely experience. We asked for Omakase and loved every piece.

Very friendly staff, English menu and the son (3rd generation) speaks some English. He actually studied a year each in the US, Canada, and Australia. The food was great, especially the fish. The cuts we're "very" generous. The tempura was equally good and not as greasy as you usually find. And if you can, do the sake tasting, it was 900 Yen for four shot glass-sized samples and a bit of background on each. They were all amazing 😋

A wonderful sushi experience This was one of my favourite meals in Japan. Family owned and run, they are so pleasant and take great pride and care in what they do and your experience. It was absolutely delicious and I would go there every night if I could. A must do!! And so reasonably priced!

not in the centre of the crowd but the food is incredibly good, fresh and not pretentious at all. but do not expect so much in the menu except a typical sushi bar. good materials alive abalone is among others. also with their good sake collection. The son is amazing!
