When we hear about galleries or art museums we go back in time in Ashmolean museum which was the first ever and the oldest museum in the world ๐ŸŒand you can imagine the amount of history heritage that is diplayed in Ashmolean, i bet it goes back to B. C๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ’ญ. There are other museums like the Louvre and the Smithsonian that came at the early centuries ๐Ÿ’ฌat different parts of the world๐ŸŒ. In Africa, Kenya๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช precisely had the absence of organised documents๐Ÿ“’๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“”๐Ÿ“˜๐Ÿ“ and objects that would have had a place to be stored๐Ÿ› at the early centuries. The perspective of that era was bringing a different narrative based on the people ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿ‘ฒ๐Ÿ‘ณ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿ’‚๐Ÿ•ต.But today we can happily celebrate ๐Ÿ‘part of our heritage thanks to Nairobi Gallery .The building itself is an iconic and distinctive building which is also referred as point zero In the C.B.D.. Which has a history of it's own. It was built in 1913 and started as a civil service building which by then was referred to as hatches ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ‘ผ,matches ๐Ÿ’‘๐Ÿ‘ซ and dispatches ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ–‹.Then later in 1963 it became the first Nairobi Provincial Commissioner's๐Ÿ‘ฎ Office๐Ÿ  for the natives .Today this building serves as a museum and a national monument. Some of them call it the National Gallery, But to most it's called The Joseph Murumbi's gallery because 3/4 of the items and objects were collected by Joseph Murumbi during his exile in the UK and each time he got foreign minister's assignments and duties in different countries in the world. Everything he had collected brought meaning and understanding ๐Ÿ˜‡during the slave era and colonialism in Africa. And when you visit this particular museum you get to learn more and be able to get a sense of community and places by celebrating and enjoying a collection heritage of our own.. For the history and art lovers this is a place to call home ๐Ÿ˜Šand have the best experience of how we transitioned economically in terms of currencies .... Then our fashion.....the type of jewelry we wear.... Our interior deco ...(for example the objects he (joseph murumbi) had for his office and living room) ...also the books for how the maumau fought and last but not least the materials they used in war during their war era. As much as somethings will remain in the past some materials most precisely on fashion the kikoi's ,vitenge's and jewelry are still used on our day to day lives... It's just that we modify them to fit the fashion sense of today... But basically nothing much has really changed meaning we are still portraying part of the heritage and this place just relives it day by day....

Such an amazing collection of diverse artworks from Kenya and Africa!! Fabric, sculptures, photos and books from the Murumbi Collection. Some books are encased behind glass but apparently copies of them can be found at Archives (to be checked) It's mostly quiet even beside the highway (but it was a Saturday) and hardly visited. More people should visit this place!!

Not necessarily tourist friendly entry or signage. Suppose itโ€™s a challenge due to location between highway construction and immigration building. Once you do get in 1000ks tourist fee seems worth it, I guess? The building is beautiful and not highlighted enough nor appreciated, maintenance is lacking. A star off for that in hopes that maintenance is in the future. Once inside a quiet place with decent information and large collection. Begins with contemporary Kenya artists but quickly shifts to more traditional arts and crafts. Overall the place. Could use a good update, or rebrand and certainly cleaning. If into weaving and fabrics this is a good visit and covers quite a portion of Africa. Thereโ€™s also a large collection dedicated to the founder of the collection, Joseph and Sheila Murumbi. Then thereโ€™s a wing with items for sale while another for amateur art. I guess I was expecting a deeper dive into national artists as opposed to art of Middle Africa, and the life and times of the founder of art collection.

It is like a very small gallery plus a very small museum. Totally like 300/400 square meters, it is like a 4/5 bed room g+0 building. It is really very small. Museum, like three room with something, woods, clothes, one living room of a older president? Not sure sorry. no comments. Gallery, two room with normal artwork with a price tag from 20,000 kes to 100,000 kes. Nothing special same as anywhere art shops you can find in Nairobi. Not recommended at all. By the way tickets price for citizens 150, residence 600 and non residence 1000KES. You need write done your phone number and passport number and in and out time at the gate. So I noticed mostly people stay there within one hour.

What a place to visit for anyone who appreciates creativity, art and culture! It was so wonderful to see the collections of artifacts and exquisite display of some of the most creative minds and hands in Kenya, East Africa and beyond. Here, you get to appreciate the diversity afforded to us as a country, and even as humanity, and render it all beautiful. It is a center to go feed your soul and eyes with elegannce

Many pieces of art and history, a variety of periods are covered. Many objects are from private collections, making very coherent declinations of themes. It's a rather small gallery, count about 90 min for a visit. Some creations of contemporan artists can also be bought.

So much heritage and history captured at the gallery about Kenya and its interaction with the outside world during the pre-colonial and colonial times are stored there. Also artwork from different artists. I would highly recommend anyone who loves and appreciates art to visit the gallery. They allow photography for better part of the gallery.

A friend from Germany was visiting and I decided to take him there whilst also planning to experience the place myself. From the entrance and parking availability, I knew this would be a good experience. It was a smooth entry experience and affordable with a choice of a guide or not if you didnโ€™t desire; at no extra fee. The Museumโ€™s facade would make you think itโ€™s small inside but walking around you realize thereโ€™s a lot to take in, a lot to learn and a lot to marvel at. Photography is allowed which is a huge plus for art lovers like me. Thereโ€™s lot to learn about the Murumbi collection, about his life as well as our history and culture that he diligently preserved with art and artifacts; including a collection of African artifacts from Ghana, Nigeria et cetera. Visiting on a weekday was very hustle free so Iโ€™d suggest doing that. Also, donโ€™t wait till you have a foreign visitor to go, just go. At the exit, thereโ€™s a shop where you can buy art, merchandise and souvenirs.

Pretty neat to see if you have time because they show the different jewelry from the different tribes. They also show sculptures and paintings. However, there are few explanations inside and there are no official prices for either the guides or the tickets so they will give you random numbers.

This is the national gallery, but is absolutely not a national gallery, but a tiny museum with one small room with contemporary art that is no way reflects the quality of the Kenyan contemporary art scene. As a national gallery, it gets one star. However, as a tiny museum, which it is, it is a 4 star visit. The tour guides allow you to touch items like the textiles and shields, which depending on your interest might make it a 5+ star visit. The building itself was the first British records keeping office, while the building behind which is now the passport office, was where Kenyan independence fighters were imprisoned and tortured. The building is small and one of the largest rooms is dedicated to the man whose collection this was and showcases a room from his house. Sadly that isn't a poignant conceptual piece, but rather an unironic ode to the collector.

Try to buy tickets in advance- best will be with a help of a Kenyan as they have accounts to purchase them. No cash payment available. Not many paintings or sculptures, but beautifully described African fabrics and their examples are shown.

The different art collection, creativity behind the works is amazing. The rich history of African culture that us the younger generation are not aware of. The history helps us understand some of the political and social issues we encounter today. The features of Mau mau, Dr Livingstone, Prof. Odundo renown for her ceramics art, Nike Seven Seven among others. The different kinds of weaving most done by men is eye opening. African jewelry made from different materials; gold, silver, stone(yes stone from rivers), Amber (itโ€™s a stone and color something I didnโ€™t know) The Murumbiโ€™s family collection of historical books(slavery), family history and pics. At kes 150 for citizens every Kenyan should visit.

Situated in perhaps what is widely regarded as Nairobi's first administrative headquarters, Nairobi Gallery features an ecclectic collection of Africana, most of which comprises of artefacts, artworks and memorabilia from the collection of Joseph Murumbi, Kenya's second Vice President. The collection is rich and features a diverse collection of African art and cultural displays from all reaches of the continent as far as Gabon and from Ethiopia as well as a host of other countries. Notably, it includes works featured by African Heritage as well as several other artists and organizations that were dedicated to the conservation of the arts and culture in the country. In addition, Nairobi Gallery also regularly features exhibitions of local and visiting artists as well as thematic exhibitions which usually run anywhere from two weeks up to three months at a time. The gallery is operated by the National Museums of Kenya and is one of the lesser-known cultural sites in Kenya; perhaps due to it's understated nature and location. The buildings housing the gallery are among the oldest in Nairobi dating back to 1909 and were the original administrative headquarters of the city. The building seems misplaced in the growing city shadowed by the towering skyscappers around it. This gallery is well-worth the visit, a must for those culturally-inclined.

Cool space but it could be alot More. The Murumbi collection is impressive but you have a guide ramble a memorised script as the background before the tour starts. This is rather annoying. I wish they used video to introduce the history then have the guests have fun interactive sessions with the guides.

Let's meet up for an authentic Kenyan cup of coffee, enjoy good art, culture and history! A big shout out to Alan Donovan and Okoth who was my guide during my visit. I was intrigued to learn so much through Murumbi's Collection. If you are a person who loves history, culture, art and great coffee you must visit this place. I learnt so much about me as a Kenyan and there things that motivated my heart to want to make a difference in the way we promote local talents and preserve our culture and history. If you are keen to learn I recommend you ask for Okoth to guide you as he was patient and very detailed in his narration of all the pieces there. Next to the Gallery is a famous coffee joint called pointzero. Kenya is know for it's authentic coffee and tea experience and this is a great place to have a taste of that. If you are new in town, the place is near the immigration office and opposite GPO bus stop. Have fun!

It is a hidden gem right in the city. The smell of old engine oil can be smelt though faint. It takes you back to a time when life was simpler and the locomotive was the most advanced piece of technology. These great beasts that lay the foundation of colonisation. It only costs Kshs 150 for adults and kids over 12 years. Kids under 2 years entry is free.
