Sonar Tori has completely blown away my mind mainly with it's Bengali Cuisine that glorifies the Bengali culture which has evolved out of several historical culinary cultures, like those of the Mughals, the Europeans and of course the indigenous agrarian class. The seating area is well spread out with one section at the entrance which is also the main dining area, then there is a small outdoor space too, in case you love greenery around with a view of the city. For big groups who would prefer a private section, don't worry at all here there is one big one and a smaller one too. Coming back to the food, i just want to say do not miss out eating here if you are already living at Kolkata or you have plans to travel at Kolkata anytime soon. The kind of experience you will get here is going to be very special. Sonar Tori is indeed a treasure to cherish and talk about for the culinary excellence in Bengali cuisine it embraces with such cultural grace and aura. I was here recently to feast on their Thali's and i must admit, it has been one of the best Thali eating experiences in a very long time. The Thali is an unlimited sit down meal which you will get serviced by the staff. Initially they will start with small portions keeping in mind food wastage but you are free to ask as much as you would want to ask, they would be happy to serve you if there is a need. There are two types of Thali's served for Lunch and Dinner - "Veg Thali" at 799 + taxes "Non-Veg Thali" at 949 + taxes Dishes that are served in the Veg menu are Chana Koraishutir Tikki, Kathi Roll, Daler Dhokna Dal, Begun Basanti, Phoolkopi Motor Shutir Torkari, chutney, papad and dessert. Dishes that are served in the Non veg menu are Radhuni Grilled fish, Manghsher Skeeh Kabab, Kumro Bhate, Aloo Bhate, Begun Bhate, Sagh Bhaja, Luchi, Aloo dum, Cholar Dal, Rice, Katla Macher Sorshe Posto Jhal, Murgi Kosha, Kochi Pathar Jhol, Chutney, Papad and dessert.

Not worth it. Dark and gloomy interiors. And smells like a storage warehouse. Had ordered veg and non veg thalis, some sort of chicken cutlet, mocha chop and daab chingri as ala carte, aam pora sorbot for drinks. Hopelessly less portion size for a thali and no refills. The daab chingri had 5 small pcs of shrimps. Chicken cutlet and the mocha chop was good. The food tasted good. Least bothered staff in a restaurant i have seen till now. Ask them for suggestions and they will go blank. They themselves don’t know if the item we are asking about is available or not, they don’t have any idea about the preparation/ serving time. Food is good. The restaurant just needs to manage the price ( reduce it) or increase the food portion quantity , and train their staff.

Great spot for authentic Bengali food. Must-try dishes like 'Kosh Mangso', daab chingri, and fish were delicious. They also offer Bengali thali. The staff explained everything about the dish. Food, Service and atmosphere are 5 star.

It is located at City center 1 Saltlake. So locationwise it is pretty good. I have ordered from them many times, also visited their place once. They serve tasty bengali food. I have tried their non-veg as well as veg items, all taste good. In fact they have some newly invented dishes which are also very tasty. Their mutton dishes are very good. Overall experience was very good.

Clueless me standing at calcutta airport on my first visit to #westbenagal #kolkata I book my uber and with my Google search and consulting few at the airport. I head to city centre mall - salk lake City. Upon arrival my first question to the staffs at the mall "where can I eat proper bengali cuisine? " As suggested we go to "Sonar Tori" First experience - the door is locked 🔐 but i still had a hope & I was stubborn to that if I eat it will be in Sonar Tori only 😜 Nupur drapped in bengali sari with a smile opens the door and tells us "Sir, we will open at 1200 hrs." 🤭 She was kind to let us keep our luggage at the restaurant. So that we can go to her suggested "tea junction - for the tea while we wait for the restaurant to open " 30-45 minutes wait" Finally we get to enter at 1200 hours and I am mesmerised with the decoration, the interior, the lighting, welcoming hospitality of Nupur, Shreya & rest of the staff. Nupur - suggested a thali for me and my friend who was on diet she suggested 👉 Betki Macher Paturi "I must say what a recommendation - we love it" My Thali had delicacies as below: 👉Aloo bhate - mash potato 👉Kumro bhate - pumpkin 👉Oal bhate - yam 👉Bhat 👉Mishti pulao 👉Cholar dal 👉Aloor dam 👉Fish fry 👉Mangsher shami kabab 👉Jhuri aloo bhaja 👉Sag bhaja 👉Luchi 👉Pomphret sorshe bata 👉Chingri malai curry / prawn 👉Murgir Kosha 👉Payesh All these mentioned above are unlimited and you can gave as many serving as you can. Bhim was polite and patience to help me explain about the cuisines on my plate.! To all the locals in Kolkata & visitors like me. I strongly recommend you to experience "Sonar Tori" Thank you Nupur, Shreya, Bhim, the amazing chef who is behind the curtain working so hard so that we love our food & the entire staff for your kind hospitality.

Unlimited buffet is really very "limited". They give very small proportion. And, if we ask them again & again, they get irritated sometimes, as if they want to tell us - "bas kar yaar, Kitna khayega" 😄 Jokes apart, quality of food is great mainly it is ghoti food. So bangal, please be aware. Proportion and serving time could be improved as they take unnecessary long time to serve, may be it's there business strategy for Unlimited buffet, so that we leave them early 😉😁

Excellent Bengali buffet with nice ambiance. Must try. The starters are really good along with the main dishes. Just a small recommendation that Sukto should be in both Veg and Non Veg. Altogether very nice experience The staffs are really nice with asking for repeat. I really enjoyed. Doi-Tulsi as a refresh drink is awesome. Compared to Bhajahori and 6 Ballyganj I really recommend this.

Dined in for late lunch. It is pocket pinching. I suggest food should be less sweet. Not all delicacies require hint of sweetness, alas!!! Bengali cooks are forgetting it day by day. Mangshor jhol was tasty. I had ilish faridpuri n paturi- it was as per my liking. We had LIT as drinks, unnecessary costly-way more than other 5 star hotels in the city. Posto was ornamental, I did not like it. One thing which stands out is the decor and the staff.Outstanding indeed.

A well decorated bengali cuisine restaurant with good foods. The dishes are a bit pricy but perfectly delicious. It is located on 4th floor of B block of city centre 1 . There are thalis as well as a-la-carte items. There are lots of items in thalis and more than sufficient for one. I have gone twice and tasted thali once and a-la-carte items second time. You must try 'pur bhora bhetki' , 'begun basonti' , 'mutton kosha' , 'chitol er muitha' , 'lebu die vapa sondesh'.

The ambience of restaurant is really great! A very nice place to visit with friends or family. Located at 4th Floor of City Centre, Saltlake. I will say food is not up to the mark, the food needs a great improvement in matter of taste. The place is bit costly, Per head it can cost upto 300 to 700(Divided among 7). We did not have to wait very long for the food. They use brass utensils. If someone wants to experience "bangaliana", it can be a great place.(ONLY BENGALI CUISINE IS AVAILABLE)

Very bad service culture. Old style restaurant which maybe had much glory earlier but doesn't look that class you shall expect from such culturally designed place. The servers are too lazy. Not attentive n just leave all on table. Even mineral water bottle was left on table like as if we need to pour to all people. Very bad. High priced with no dish not less than 700 800 rs but no service quality at all. Charging higher than normal high quality restaurants is okay but what is there to back up the price? Not recommended. The owner needs to have a relook at their staff n service. The non veg buffet was 1250+ tax n veg was 1050+ tax. However you dare not ask for repeat serve as they shall look at you like Air India Aunty( No disrespect to the age but come on... stop being n judging me as if you are my Mother) hostesses with a frown. This is the reason on a pre valentine day on a Sunday evening the place was deserted. One thing for any compete restaurant...Get the cook. Excellent cook. Every dish spice was different like authentic genuine dish n not someone who just uses same kind of spice. Kudos to the chef. Revising the rating for the cook else I would have given zero rating.

Edit: This is why brand names still matter. The restaurant folks got in touch after I posted my feedback & took serious note of the complaints promising to take care of them. This effort to please customer also matters. The lady at front desk is a gem- please treasure her. I did order online again & this time the food was absolutely mouthwatering. So the chef is talented but maybe he just had a bad day when I was visiting. The in restaurant service still needs good attention. Order ala carte. ***Old review*** Been trying to pay a visit here since a while simply coz of my fascination of eating in "kashar bashon" & word of mouth. Takes a painfully long time to serve main course dishes (i mean come on- your starters are pint sized & finish in a jiffy!) They wont even tell you the whole menu.I had to literally coax the server if they have anything beyond the gondhoraj sondesh to which he nodded saying they have chutney which was again served after ages. Taste/quality: The items are not even served hot! The food does not taste very good so im glad in a way abt the lil quantity because i wasn't guilted into wasting much. The only reason i wanted to take a second helping of prawn was becoz of the amount i paid & return on investment factor. But then thought otherwise & canceled. Cost: I paid ~ 1800 for two ppl- thoroughly underfed both because of reluctance of either sides to either order more( coz of taste & bad service) or serve less ( the servers couldn't care less- they dont even visit your table to offer water! ) Avoid. Unless they take a hint or two from negative reviews & really pay attention to their service & food preparation AND QUANTITY & make improvements. Places like Rajdhani also do thalis with bite sized portions but their staff is on the run trying to refill all the time. Please learn from them.

Bengali cuisine has evolved out of several historical culinary cultures, like the Mughals, Europeans and of course the indigenous agrarian class. Items like the pulao, kasha mangsho, korma; kofta have been derived from Mughlai cuisine. The Nawab of Awadh who took refuge in Kolkata during the British Raj brought with him hundreds of cooks and masalchis (spice mixers) who helped to spread their culinary style of using wide range of spices (like jafran saffron and mace). Sonar Tori is much more than only a restaurant serving Bengali food. It attempts to offer an xpression in every way that is rooted in our soil and is quintessentially Bengali in every sense: sight, sound, smell, taste & touch. Want to deluge at the majestic set bengali thali sonar Tori comes up with a wide range of buffet options for you all you going to get @949/- + Taxes for Non Veg and @799/- + Taxes for Veg... Our menu consisted of "Chana Koraishutir Tikka, Kathi Roll, Kumro Bhate, Aloo Bhate, Begun Bhaja, Sagh Bhaja, Luchi, Aloor Dom, Cholar Dal, Rice, Daler Dhoker Dalna, Begun Basanti Phoolkopi Motor Shutir Torkari, Chutney/Papad, Sandesh" in Veg Thali... If you choose Non Veg Thali you will get "Radhuni Grilled Fish, Mangsher Skeeh Kabab" in Starters and "Katla Macher Sorshe Posto Jhal, Murgi Kosha, Kochi Pathar Jhol" in Main Course... Schedule your dates with your family and loved ones leave the rest to good food memories at sonar tori

A well known authentic bengali restaurant serving the mouth watering delicacies and the presentation is just WOW!! You couldn't restrict yourself to take picture of the food served, the main part of any food is appearance, it has to be first taste by the eyes and then the taste buds, and the food served at Sonar Tori exactly does that.. Ambience of the restaurant is like traditional bengali rajbari style, the staffs are friendly and efficient, overall a great experience...

We found good ethnic Bengali Food here. Although their prices are on the higher side, but the quality and quantity is worth it. The interior is set in a vintage theme depicting the lifestyle of old Rajbari style of living in Bengal. Ideal for family lunch.

Loved the Bengali tradition cuisine and vibe, it's such a delight to consume foods that we were once familiar with while growing up, at least. Being a terrible cook, it's only restaurants like this that allows me to eat foods that I had earlier taken for granted at home. However, the oil in chanar dalna is a little too much, making the dish excessively greasy. The bhetkir paturi was excellent, perfect fish and right amount of spices. Aloor dum and koraishnutir kochuri were quite good. I definitely overate 😆

Can’t stop myself from visiting this restaurant over again. Everything is simply perfect about this place, most important the staff behavior is good & excellent hospitality they take care of every order right and don’t let me wait any longer. I have the best dining experience with the place. Full five starts for the food, every dish was perfect made and so tasty. The food taste and quality are really great. I highly recommend this restaurant. Food was Soo yummy. I have to say here I had the best non veg bengali thali 😋 And must say the atmosphere and the decoration is really great and nostalgic, mostly the balcony area ❤ as I love those kind of bengali bonedi bari thats why I love the ambience too much. sonar tori perfectly meet my expectations by food and by the ambience. Note: as I'm from a bengali family and I was visited with my family... in the non veg thali I do prefer basmati rice in plain rice, not gobindovog for lunch (its a feedback)

Bengali flavors, a culinary delight, ,where tastes take flight. Every single items that i ordered is specially hand crafted by chef to ensure that our taste buds is awakened to extreme. We went with unlimited non veg thali which has huge variety but the Bombil Fish Fry at starter was ultimate which I never had anywhere. They serve gobindo bhog rice in thali which is excellent and goes very well. Sweet pulao with touch of kesar very nicely done and taste very well with Mutton. The look of the whole restaurant is very nicely done giving it a very modern yet takes you back to history of Bengali food. Lights are very suttle which gives a nice vibe and change the look of the food making it more tempting. Aam Pora Drink is the one makes you more hungry and must have for your digestion. Lastly the Nolen Gurer Ice Cream at dessert just nailed it, a must have. If you really want to try Bengali food with excellent service this is the place to be. Each and every staff knows what they are serving and highly professional. Will surely visit again soon. I wish they have one such branch in Delhi too.

Sonar Tori is a captivating Bengali heritage restaurant , dedicated to reviving long-lost Bengali recipes. With each dish, it takes you on a nostalgic journey through the rich culinary traditions of Bengal, offering a feast for both the palate and the soul. It’s not just about the food; Sonar Tori is also a haven for cocktail lovers, with a delightful array of drinks, each with a Bengali twist and a creative name that adds to the experience. Our Cocktails were aam pora Martini (the least sweet of them for me) and a fascinating Dal chino Modhu tok whiskey for my friend. And then the food! Each Platter was amazing, the most being the Mochar Pulao! Amazing subtle taste! Ended with some Saab sandesh and noken gurer ice-cream.. Hats off to you Chiranjib Chatterjee you have taken the Neotia Restaurants and clubs and cafes to a different level! Kudos to Chef Bhaskar and his team, especially Debasis who took care of us. A heartfelt thank you 🙏😊 If you are in Kolkata, and St Lake do visit this unique heritage Bengali restaurant. You will thank me later #sonartori #sonartorirestaurant #farewelltodearfriend #bengalicuisine #Lostandheritagerecipes #kolkata #kolkata restaurants

Sonartori is one of finest addition to the city's food culture . The grandure and the extravagant decor paired with the delicious food will transport you straight to the zamindari era and make you feel no less than royal. As you enter , the first thing that catches your eye is the beautifully done up interiors keeping in mind the heritage of bengal . They have a huge sprawling space with private rooms in case you want a more elusive space for your family and friends. We had opted for the bengali for grand thali and a couple of dishes separately The Nonveg thali is priced at 1549Al and the veg one at 1249 Al. My personal favourite being the starter plate which included Chicken kebab Mutton galwati Fish fry Palong chingrir bora The fish was succulent and flavourful and the palong bora was something I would keep coming back for. The main thali included an array of some of the popular bengali dishes like Cholar dal ,Mutton kosha, shorshe illish . We ordered Mocchar chop ,mochar ghonto along with this which were delicious . We ended our hearty meal by polishing off a plate of aam sandesh and payesh .The aam sandesh had just the perfect balance of sweet to balance out your tastebuds. The service is prompt and hasslefree with the staff making sure to always cater to your requests. If you are looking to explore the rich cuisine of bengal in an aesthetic and artistic ambinace then this is the place to be . #weekendouting #foodblogger #foodstagram #bonggirl #bongfoodie #kolkatagram #kolkatabuzz #sonartori #kolkatadiaries #kolkatatobangalore #yummyness #instalunch #munchingmonks #keepmunching

Had the Jamai soshti special thali! The ambiance is great, staff are friendly but the food could be better. Comparing it to the other big bong restaurants, the quality wasn’t the best. Ilish was good but the Mangsho was so-so. The chicken wasn’t great either. I had better expectations from this restaurant. Certainly not on my top 5 list of bong food. Not a bang for your buck kinda place.

Well known restaurant. We went during Durga Pooja therefore we had to wait for around 30 mins. People were ready to wait for even around an hour or more. Their food was really really good. We had Dhakai Biryani, Mutton Bhuna. Had Fish fry which was very nice. Rabdi and Mihidana dessert was also good. Food was really good. The only con was that they did not give finger bowl as we had to wash our hands in the washroom (could have made other arrangement) which was really not done as their washroom was very small and the door was very hard to keep it open. It does not take up much time to serve finger bowls as it takes much more time for the bill to arrive.

The food tastes well, the service and atmosphere is also good. But... My experience was not good as I had severe acidity after eating here. I got very sick after eating the lunch here. It's very first time in my life that I got sick after eating at any restaurant. Also, I personally didn't find any reason to charge a 20 rupees kinley water bottle for Rs. 95. I have recently been to many restaurants in north india where the kinley water bottle price is same as it is outside of the restaurants. PS: I was living outside India for many years and recently came back here; so might not have idea about charging a water bottle for such high price at some restaurants.

The food is terribly good. If you want to try some authentic Bengali dishes, then this place tops the list. The mustard Hilda was just out of this world. Tender and juicy on the inside and the aromatic flavour of mustard gravy hits on spot. Apart from that the Daab Chingri is also something to be tried on the main course. Coconut flavoured gravy brings an unique taste to it. It is neither too spicy nor took sweet.

We went to this place on Sarwaswati Puja. We had non veg thali or non veg buffet. The restaurant serves authentic Bengali cuisine. It is Bengali Jamindar bari themed restaurant decorated with chandeliers, lamps and wooden chairs. They serve food in bell metal and brass utensils. Customer service is very good and we had a very good time there. Food taste was really amazing. We got prawn, mutton, fish and chicken in main course. Also the desserts are so tasty.

Food is decent with elaborate menu, but then they have extremely slow service. I mean you have to wait for more than 15-20 min before they serve the next item which is extremely annoying. Inspite of repeated complain on the service, it still remained the same which is very sad.

  • 2/5 Abhishek M. 10 months ago on Google
The ambience was very good. The food quantity was good. We ordered Bengali Thali which cost ₹1099/-. The thali contains 17-19 menus including chicken, prawn Malaikari, Katla Fish, alu Dom, dal, luchi, Basanti polao, plain rice and a few starters and papad, chatni Rosogolla in the end. The quality can be improved. We have heard a lot of good feedback about Sonar Tori. But after having the food we must say we are very disappointed. Almost all the items except Kalta Sorse need lots of improvement. The amount of sugar and salt needs to be adjusted properly in every item. And the amount of Rose Water should be decreased in the items. The worst thing is the service of the restaurant staff's. Their service is too slow. Every time we had to ask them twice or thrice to refill the items and almost after 10-15 mins they are refilling the items in the thali. Their service needs to be promt and fast. And finally I must say one thing they are charging ₹95/- for a ₹20/- kinley bottle. The MRP was clearly written on that bottle but still they charged 4.5 times higher which is very pathetic. Overall is was not a very pleasant experience.

The ambience was good. The food quality was average. However, faced some challenges. First, opted to sit at balcony in the open air. But that place was not clean. Therefore changed the plan and sat inside. Secondly, planned to order beer, but there was none available, though the menu suggested a numbers of them. Then moved to non-alcoholic beverages. To my surprise most of the items were not available either like ginger ale, tonic water or red bull. Then I was told only fresh lime soda is available from that entire page of that menucard and I had no other choice than to accept that. Lastly, some waiters were wearing the mask wrongly leaving their nose outside, which is not a good practice during current pandemic.

Average food quality in the thali - though it's a wide variety . Loved the stuffed bhetki fish roll and chicken cutlets from the a la carte stable . Very high wait time from order taken to serve . ( 40 mins on a average weekday afternoon).

A journey to the old school Bengali heritage and cuisine. A hidden gem cultivating and nurturing the lost Bengali culture and cuisine. Chef Bhaskar has indulged himself in research and reviving in bringing back the lost dishes that we use to hear from our ancestors. A must try if you’re a Bengali foodie lover. The décor and ambiance will take you back decades. The staff is great and their attention to detail is well noted.

Went there recently with my family. In one word it's wonderful! The interior decoration is exquisite. Located in the 4th floor of Block B in City Centre 1 Mall, Salt lake. It's quite good actually. Coming to the min part - The Food. It was really awesome. All the food items were fresh and delicious. They were extremely tasty 😋. If you are there definitely visit this place once.

Food is quite ordinary & the kitchen is likely to be very unhealthy as we discovered a dead fly in our dessert. It was discovered at the right time otherwise if consumed, the same would have led to extreme health hazard. Never going back there again!!

Food was absolutely great I'll give them that. BUT I haven't seen a more overpriced place before this it's outrageous....also washrooms are filthy. 3 glass thums up for 375 Rs. That should give an idea.
