(Translated by Google) A graveyard dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa, who is known to say nothing. As Tosho Daigongen, he is watching over the Edo Shogunate even if he dies. The Toshogu Shrine, which was magnificently built by Iemitsu, is gorgeous. It is highly artistic, such as colors and sculptures, and shows its value as a World Heritage Site. Furthermore, in autumn, the beauty is doubled in combination with the autumn leaves. It will be enough to satisfy the worshipers who visit. There is no doubt that tourists from overseas can also enjoy the beauty of Japan. Toshogu is famous for being unfinished, but it's fun to look for the unfinished part. Please be careful not to forget the time and it will not be pitch black.

It was such a treat to be able to enjoy this wonderful historical site. Many beautiful buildings with gold leaf and carvings and colorful designs with flowers and animals and such. Many stairs to climb with varied heights involved. The shines were impressive going back to the first Shogun in his honor!

This is one of the most famous shrine in Japan, which is located in Nikko san area. The buildings and statues are so beautiful with historical values, so you will absolutely enjoy your visit here. It has a famous statue called three monkeys which describes a image of whole life. And there is so famous ceiling drawing, Nakiryuu, which means crying dragon. Taking picture inside is prohibited, so please enjoy when you visit there.

(Translated by Google) It's been since I was in elementary school, but when I take a closer look, each building is very gorgeous and wonderful. Nakiryu was also interested in a construction method that echoes only in certain places. However, even though it is an important cultural property of such a venerable country, Nakiryu's guide was almost a push-selling story, Goshuin's older brother was very unpleasant and arrogant, and I was afraid of the bell-selling aunt's push-selling. did. Isn't it worth the next entry even after paying the admission fee?

It has great trails to hike on sunny days. So many stores and restaurants on the way too where you could get refreshments or you may use the washrooms if you needed. Keep in mind as usual, there are no garbage bins in japan so you would have to carry your litter with you until you get to the station or home. I recommend having sunblock with you because it's quite an exposed area and you need that protection.

This was just lovely after we passed the historic red bridge and began our exploration with Tosho-gu Shrine. It is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built in 1636. I try to imagine who was here a few hundred years ago.

(Translated by Google) A World Heritage Site that represents Japan. Nikko Toshogu Shrine enshrines Tosho Daigongen, who deified Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate in 1617, as the main deity. There are 55 buildings in the precincts, including 8 national treasures and 34 important cultural properties, and it is one of the best in Japan with its gorgeous beauty. The fee is 1300 yen for adults and 450 yen for children (up to junior high school students). The group costs 1170 yen for adults and 405 yen for children. Shooting was OK in most places, but be careful as shooting is prohibited in some places! ️ I went to Nikko Toshogu for the first time, and it took almost an hour due to traffic jams, but it was good to see it. Even during bad weather it was a breathtaking sight. It really feels like you’re entering a different world, especially with all the stairs. The price was very reasonable and even without the audio guide there is a lot of information presented in English. You also get to see the „see nothing, hear nothing, say, nothing monkeys“ and other iconic statutes and imagery. Definitely a must-see spot

Here is another World Heritage site for its masterpiece's architectural and decorative. Prepare for a long walk and many steps to cover all the shrines and temples around the area. To get to Inner Shrine Pagoda, you have to climb up another 200+ steps. Take your times and Enjoy!

Visited around 10.30am on a Thursday, we drove and there was a really long queue getting in to the parking lots (roads were very congested with cars and tour buses). We didn’t end up going into the shrine as it was packed with tourists and there was a long queue to get tickets, so we explored the nearby areas instead. Minus the crowds, I enjoyed walking between rows of tall trees and soaking up the autumn vibes in some of the quieter areas. Would recommend going to the nearby Rinnoji Temple as well for some beautiful autumn foliage (early-mid Nov), plus entrance is free.

We went on a rainy day admittedly but this shrine just did not impress. The architecture was amazing on a few of the buildings but the crowds were just horrendous, they really need to ban large tour groups from taking up space, ruining photos and blocking narrow pathways. It was expensive to get in where there are nicer places for free. Nikko is nice but it’s very busy and Tokyo has nicer places which are quieter and free so bear in mind. It is visually very nice but again, there are nicer places. I don’t know how to explain but Nikko gave a weird impression and was definitely the least favourite thing of my Japan trip so far. Large volumes of tourists meant it was hard to enjoy the shrine compared to everywhere else where they have been spacious and peaceful. Lots of people were being disrespectful taking photos in areas where they were prohibited and it feels like it is a tourist trap. I’m sure on a sunny day the architecture would be incredible but it just did not sit right when we went. Another thing is that the general up keeping was poor compared to other places and you do wonder where your money goes.

I didn’t get to take a picture of the red bridge which I was really looking forward to and one of the reasons why I booked this tour. So I’m pretty bummed. The trip felt was rushed. I still give 4 stars because the shrine was really wonderful. It was so big that takes more than just 1 hour and half. It wa raining that time too so better not come in the summer is was so hot and bipolar rain.

Cool Shrine and temple with a ton of history. Shame that they pollute the inner sanctuary by selling trinkets that don't do anything. At least they would make good souvenirs if you are willing to pay the inflated prices. Overall very beautiful and not many people as it was snowing when we went.

Nikko is a huge park with the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu shrines but also a primal forest populated with monkeys, and countless smaller sites to visit and trails to experience. I recommend spending three days in Nikko, finding lodging in one of the local ryokan. Winter is beautiful and summer very busy but stunning. The Matsuri or grand parade held every May 17 and 18 is beautiful and include archery competition. A unique experience.

This is the most famous temple at Nikko and rightly so, for it is a treasure trove of lacquer work, wood carving and traditional architectural styles. There are a great variety of structures at the site, ranging from tombs to stables and ornately decorated gateways. The whole complex is surrounded by majestic cedars, which greatly contributes to the atmosphere. Entrance costs 1300 yen.

The parking lot to this place is quite crowded on the weekends - it was also peak autumn season. The wait to park was a long time - the shrine itself was crowded as well. The complex is very impressive indeed, what I discovered is that the Three Wise Monkeys originated here. 🙈🙉🙊 You’ve probably heard of the proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Some of the building were under construction with scaffolding and tenting too. I’d like to come back and explore more when it is off season.

Great temple, but the workers there seemed almost desperate for money. It was a 1300 yen entrance fee per person which is the most ive paid for any temple or shrine in all of Japam, and almost every 15 feet there was a different shop person trying to get you to buy or donate something. It was kind of sad. Apart from that I had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend it.

Coming to this shrine in the winter is also a great idea because it is serene during the off-peak season. It is even better when it snows. That gives you a chance to really enjoy the shrine. If you are lucky, You may grasp a happy yet tranquil moment. That will be superb.

This is where the tomb of the great Japanese shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu is located. You have to pay to see the graves and temples. The opulence of this temple could be considered a Buddhist version of the Catholic Church.

Definitely worth the entry fee and trouble getting here. Highly recommended to visit here if you're staying in Tokyo. This is the best temple you can see from Tokyo without going half way across the country. Origin of the three wise monkeys, has a lovely pagoda. You can pay with an IC card. Very intricate carvings and painting in a fantastic gold and black color scheme. There are details everywhere you look. There is a photoservice that also takes a picture with your phone for free. The inner part can only be entered without shoes and no pictures can be taken inside the building. The steep stone steps to the northern part of the temple become extremely slippery when wet.

Great place to visit. It's beautiful and amongst the most gorgeous trees. Be warned, the sleeping cat is a walk up over 200 steps & it was overrated, but the trees (in my opinion) are far more worth the walk. It was busy here even in the rain.

The most beautiful temples I’ve visited in Japan so far. The protection of these buildings is immaculate and they weren’t burnt down in some fire and rebuilt in the 1900’s they are actually four hundred years old and are just taken care of and repainted very well. I could feel the history breathing in and out of this place. Tokugawa’s treasures were well kept and I just can’t describe in clear words how happy that I, a history lover, was to to be able to touch and be so close to something so old and well taken care of for the public. I think Tokugawa would be proud at how many people love and respect his family’s heirlooms and resting places.

I'm not big on shrines and temples but this was a nice visit. Entering the main shrine was surreal. You have to remove your shoes and keep your phone away. It was quiet even with all the visitors, and just imagining what it was like centuries ago is just a different experience altogether. I went on a Monday afternoon, it wasn't crowded. A lot of locals and just a few chinese and western people. There are audio guides you can rent for 500 yen.

One of the oldest shrines in Japan. You can explore the insides of the shrine by paying 1800++ yen. Inside the shrine, you will be able to see the 3 monkeys, the 12 astrological sign plus, the sleeping cat and the Crying Dragon which is said to give you goodluck. If you are lucky (like the time we went there) a monk prayed for us via a special prayer.

This is the most beautiful shrine I've ever seen, Nikko Tosho-gu is a shrine dedicated for Tokugawa Ieyasu. First thing you see before going to the shrine is a passageway surrounded by a lot of huge trees, then you will arrive at the front entrance where you can see a five-story pagoda. There is a souvenir shop right after the front entrance where you can buy some lucky charms, stamps, or other souvenir related to this shrine. You can find a photo service next to the souvenir shop where you can take a picture in front of Nikko Tosho-gu shrine, and you will get a print of the photo as well. There is a lot of area you can explore in here if you love Japan's historic place.

Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf on the gate and Toshogu shrine make this place become another UNESCO World Heritage. If you don’t know anything about history of this place, try to capture some highlights which are 1) see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil" monkeys “ 2) Sleeping cat 3) Tokugawa Ieyasu's mausoleum 4) Five-storied-pagoda. What to consider , The place is so crowded everyday so a chance to get nice photos like social media could be low. You also need 15-20 walks to the gate so please prepare.

A beautiful shrine with lots to see, definitely worth a visit. Quite a lot of walking with steps so be aware if you have trouble getting around. Nikko is a lovely little town with lots to see - perfect for a day trip. Tosho-gu is probably the main attraction. You can walk there from the JR station or take a bus if you don't feel like walking. I recommend walking since we are talking about less than 4 miles and there's lots to see. The complex is absolutely gorgeous with tons of impressive shrines and structures. One of my favorite during this first trip to Japan.

  • 4/5 Sander van V. 10 months ago on Google
Totally worth visiting this temple complex. Although I have seen many temples by now, located all over Japan, this is something unique. The duration of the visit is between 1 and 2 hours, depending if you wanna walk over the complete complex. There is a stairway up onto a hill where you can visit a tomb. During the summer period it could be less convenient to walk up without getting sweaty;) Look into the details of the engraving in the building, so much details, but also very well maintained. Not sure what is still original and what not? I almost skipped the temple where you have to hand over one of your paper tickets to get inside. It's a small tour with some explanations of the temple itself. The highlight is when they start hammering the wooden sticks to show where the temple reflects the sound of the echo, really fascinating! When you're by car, try to find a parking spot around.

  • 5/5 Lea L. 10 months ago on Google
You can purchase the entrance ticket on the spot. I would recommend visiting this temple. It covers a wide area and has a lot of architecture to look at. It can be a bit challenging to walk around, especially when the ground is wet, so do be careful. Temple closes on time, so don't be late.

We were perfectly impressed by this fabulous Edo-era shrine! The mood here in summer is very magical, with large trees and the sound of cicadas. The most beautiful shrine complex i’ve ever seen, it was filled with gold and all the signature animal emblems that are famous in Japan. I guess it could get crowded depends on the season or holidays but when I went there it was not too bad (we went there quite late though, we were the last batch to get in the shrine), so not the best observation of crowdedness here.

Of all the shrines and temples I've visited in Japan, this could be one of the most beautiful I've seen. Set amidst the lush greenery in the mountains of Nikko, the intricate and elaborate construction and design is really awe inspiring. It really helps to put into clarity how much Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu is revered as a deity by the locals.

(Translated by Google) 2020/9/27 To Nikko Toshogu for the first time in 45 years since the elementary school excursion I remembered the story of a sparrow playing behind a sleeping cat while the demon (cat) was away from the guide, but I took a picture of it, but quite a few people glanced past it. As for the three wise monkeys, I didn't remember that it was a story at all, so I learned.

Cool experience. But make sure to bring a big jacket and gloves to keep warm in the winter because it really gets cold.

Sprawling complex of temples and shrines, as the Japanese say "if you haven't seen Nikko, you haven't seen Japan" These photos from around the main Tosho gu but there are many other sightseeing areas in the greater Nikko region

If you are planning to visit Japan this is one of the places you must visit. A Japanese friend told me that this temple is a power spot where you can recharge and pray. It is a pristine place of worship.

Beautiful place in the world. It is surrounded by beautiful nature waterfalls. Shrine temples and museums are major attraction there. Shrine temple will be Open only for two months November and December . U can enjoy the colorful gorgeous Japan in this time. U can see three colors of leafs for every tree. It is transition time from one to other.

(Translated by Google) Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who was listed as a World Heritage Site as the grave of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the incarnation of patience, forced him to participate in the Imjin War. However, he did not participate in the war and remained in Japan to build Edo. That place is now the world-class city of Tokyo. I like Tokugawa Ieyasu among Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. If you read the long-awaited book and visit all over Japan, you will feel the unique excitement and emotion of travel. (Translated by Google) There are many shrines in Japan, but I'm sure there is no other place that is more sacred than here. ❗️ It is so famous that Ieyasu / Hideyoshi and Sir Yoritomo are enshrined. Decorated with countless fine sculptures such as sparrows, the entire building has a high reputation as one huge work of art, and worshipers will not get bored 😃 Therefore, there are many visitors from all over the country regardless of the season 🎵 I also went back to the excursion when I was 5th grade and about 25 years later, but both were satisfactory 😆 (Original)

The Toshogu shrine in Nikko is one of these historical landmarks you must see while in Japan. It is one of the most beautiful and revered places in Japan. It is situated in the Nikko natural park and is surrounded by a beautiful nature. Parking is between 600 yens and 1000 yens depending the place. The shrine entrance is about 1300 yens, I don't remember clearly.

When I go to Toshogu, I feel uplifted and calm. I think there were about 200 stairs to the grave. It's fun so don't give up and climb. The feeling of exhilaration is amazing. If you put a photo on Instagram, it will look good, so please use it. Toshogu is irresistible for history lovers, but I think that even those who are not very familiar with it can enjoy it, so please go there.
