I really really really loved it here! It was way more fun then expected. I ended up staying 5 hours in total here. The monkeys mind their own business and they pretty much act like you aren't there. There were a lot of babies as well. Which I found super cute. A couple of them also ended up bathing amd playing in the hot springs which was really fun to see. Luckily it wasn't that busy when I visited. But next time i would love to come during the winter!

This is a very popular tourist attraction year round. We got there by bus just like most of the other people. It's roughly a 40 minute walk from the bus stop to the snow monkeys park. Part of the trail can be muddy and slippery due to rain or snow, so wear appropriate footwear as suggested by the other reviewers. Luckily the trail is mostly flat, we made it there without much difficulty even in the snow. It's definitely worth the walk. We saw plenty of monkeys inside the park. Most of them were soaking or just hanging around the hot spring. The others were cuddling or running around the riversides. It got a little bit crowded around the hot spring, but there was enough room for everyone to get a good view and shots of the monkeys.

Great place to visit if you love animals and especially monkeys, you get to walk around with them and get extremely close. You should refrain from petting them and feeding them but you can take as many pictures as you want! It's a pretty surreal experience since they walk up right next to you and don't seem to care that you're there at all. As expected there's a lot of tourists around so it can be hard to get a calm moment or a picture sometimes but it's definitely worth going non the less! Had an amazing time!

Free parking is available for the monkey park. It’s about a 30 minute flat walk to the entryway that is not paved. I would recommend shoes for hiking. Although it was a Saturday when we visited, we arrived at 8:30 and entered at 9:00 when the park opened. We had the place to ourselves for about 45 minutes undisturbed. At the time, only two monkeys were inside the onsen however many monkeys were around or near the water. The monkeys themselves are not aggressive and left you alone without incident. I rather enjoyed watching the babies play and the mothers cling to the babies for protection. Overall, I am happy to see the snow monkeys relatively crowd free.

The hike up to the monkeys was very beautiful! And the snow monkeys are definitely worth the visit! The pool they are in is much smaller than expected but nonetheless enjoyed the experience. Just a tip, the path in winter is slippery at the beginning, so I would recommend bringing shoes with good grip and spikes. We had flat shoes and after we made it up the first steps, we were fine the rest of the way. But would've definitely felt safer with some more snow-suited boots!

Amazing place in the winter! The park with the monkeys are not big, but so worth it. Monkeys are very cute, not aggressive and totally ignores people and just goes about their business as always. You park the car, go for a 2 km hike through amazing nature, and you end up with the most fantastic group of monkeys take the full spa treatment.. And it's wild monkeys, no fence, no feeding them, the can go as they please.. It costs 800 yen per adult and is worth all and then some..

To reach the Snow Monkey Park, you'll need to walk around 1.6km. In winter, ensure you wear waterproof hiking or trekking shoes. While the park isn't large, the scenery is breathtaking, and you can watch the snow monkeys enjoying a hot spring. Remember not to bring food inside, follow the rules, and avoid disturbing the wild monkeys. There are no restaurants within or near the park; they're only available near the parking lot, so please plan accordingly.

Definitely worth a visit amidst the touristy feel. It’s been warm the last few days, hence not icy and more like muddy. But safer to walk, did not need spikes. We were lucky to have a few of them, especially the grandfather (last photo) in the on a warm day. On the way down don’t forget to stop by at Enza Cafe for their homemade apple pie…. Simply awesome…

A bit far from everything else. The walk to the monkey park is about 20 minutes and along a beautiful path surrounded by trees. Admission tickets are 800 yen for adults. Although the monkeys roam freely, there are a few areas that are marked off. You can enjoy seeing them without getting too close as they can be quite aggressive.

Fantastic place to view the snow monkeys bathing in the hot spring. I did not realize how many monkeys there were at this venue. Great photo opportunities as they come right up close and do not seem bothered by all the humans clicking pictures of them. Used the Snow Monkey Pass. It cost 4000 yen but was cheaper than paying for the express bus booth ways and the entry fee into the park. Express bus leaves from bus stop 24 on the east side of the Nagano Station. We took the first bus of the day at 8;15am and it was a wise decision as we were able to get to the park before all the coach tour buses arrived. The express bus takes about 50 minutes. There is a 25 minute walk from the bus stop to the monkey park, but it's an easy stroll, albeit a bit muddy in some places. Toilets are at the start of the walk and at the entrance to the park. Lots of places to see the monkeys roam free and delve into the running water. Well worth making the effort and going.

Winter January 2024 Walking up the snowy track was breathtaking. Amazing view and many beautiful scenery for photo shooting. It's 1.8km one way and takes about 45 minutes. However, give it extra for taking photos. Once you've reached the top, the village is spectacular, and every step you've climbed is worth it. The monkeys are friendly. However, do not carry food or drink as the smell or aroma may attract them. There'll be T&C at the ticket counter for patrons to take cautions when visiting. I would recommend this place to visit, especially when you've not seen monkeys in hot spas before. And definitely the view and scenery.

I have heard about this like most people so decided to take a tour to see the Snow Monkeys. It’s about 3 1/2 hours from Tokyo Shinjuku. Once we got there there is a little bit of a walk to get to the monkeys. ( 1 mile each way from the entrance) It’s about a 20 minute walk but be careful as there was a lot of ice and snow. When you see the geyser ( which is pretty interesting in itself) you are almost there. A few more steps up. There wasn’t a lot of snow but lots of monkeys. A few were in the water but it was really nice to finally be able to see them. You have to go at least once.

TL;DR: Visited around noon/evening, snagged a lucky parking spot near the hike start. Easy 1.5 km trail to a ticket booth charging 800 yen for adults. Group discount available. Weather affects monkey sightings. Souvenir shop with toilets and a photo booth. Monkeys are friendly if you follow the rules. Full Review: Arriving at noon or evening, we found parking close to the hike's starting point—a stroke of luck, although securing a spot might be trickier for others. A manageable 1.5 km trail leads to the ticket booth, where adult admission is 800 yen (kids' prices elude my memory). Groups of 20 or more enjoy a discount, if I recall correctly. The scenery is stunning, though seeing monkeys is weather-dependent. A souvenir shop, equipped with toilets and a photo booth, adds convenience. When fortunate enough to encounter the monkeys, they're amiable, offering picturesque moments if you adhere to the rules.

A bucket list destination if you have the opportunity while visiting Japan. You can easily get lost in nature and most of the visuals make you feel like you working for national geographic. The walk to the park from the bus stop was about 40 minutes. We went in early January and the weather was beautiful. It costs ¥800 for adults to enter but it was worth every yenny. I highly recommend visiting this park as it's a once in a lifetime experience.

I love this place. It is heaven for snow monkeys and the general public. I go every year. February is the best time but packed so January is also good. During the pandemic it was open and so quiet. It was amazing. No smoking or eating or plastic bags showing as monkey will try and take it. Flash photography is allowed as monkeys are used to it. It quite dangerous walking up the “hill” as no fence etc so be aware. As I said it’s heaven

Prepare to hike 2km on foot uphill muddy messy terrain slippery when wet. Not recommended for unfit or elderly. Check live cams online before going down. Monkeys may not be there all the time. They don't guarantee it. Entrance ¥800 for adults. Monkeys are generally well behaved, don't attack humans like those in Bali temple as no feeding rules are observed. They can walk by you close proximity without snatching your sunglasses or other personal effects Free parking available but some walking required too.

Wonderful experience, a real nice winter treat! Long trek to go to the park but well worth it. In full snow and with actual snow falling hard it's a great winter time experience walking around with the added bonus and stars of it all, the monkeys happily lazing about, playing everywhere and readily taking poses for you as you photograph them.

  • 5/5 Kristin P. 3 years ago on Google
Definitely not the easiest walk, especially in the winter, so come prepared! On rainy and snowy days, boots are a must but you can rent them before heading on the mile long walk. Parking is free but there are limited spots. The monkeys are cool and crazy, but they do get very close up to you.

Visited this place during winter in January. My visit was a captivating blend of natural beauty and adorable wildlife. The chilly weather was undeniable but the sight of the snow covered landscape and endearing snow monkeys enjoying a hot bath in their natural habitate more than made up for it. The journey to the park itself was an adventure, through picturesque trails that added an element of excitement to the experience. Upon arriving at the park's ♨️ springs, the sight of the 🐒🐵 soaking in warm waters was an absolute delight.

We went on a chilly, rainy day and had an excellent time. Saw hundreds of monkeys, many extremely closely as they will run up next to you. When you get to the end of the paved road, you will have to walk about 1.6km to the monkey park entrance building. This walk is beautiful, fairly easy though with some elevation gain, and on a mostly dirt path. There was a little bit of mud so I recommend bringing shoes that can get a bit dirty. After the long walk, you can buy your tickets to see the monkeys. From there, it is a short 5 minute walk to the monkey onsen. There were a decent number of people at the pool, but it was not overly crowded. We saw hundreds of monkeys. A decent number were in the water itself, but many more were on the rocky slopes all around it. They often fought and had little skirmishes. Many of them were mothers holding small babies which were super cute. Around 1:30pm, one of the workers blew a whistle and started feeding them (barley I think). That was pretty fun to watch since they all gathered closely to us. The worker also pointed out the boss monkey of the whole group. We went in late October, and the weather up near the park was notably colder and windier than in town, so dress accordingly. Make sure to check the webcam of the monkeys online before making the walk. They are not there every day. It's a great experience if you do get to see them, highly recommend!

Amazing experience being up close with the Snow Monkeys (which are actually Japanese Macaques). They are indifferent to human presence so you will have no trouble going up to them to take pictures, though the guideline is to stay at least 1 meter away to respect their space. It's a little surreal, almost like humans are invisible. There's a 20 to 30 minutes trek up to the park on foot, so traveling light is best if visiting. If you're staying at the hotels nearby, ask the reception about the park and they might give you discount coupons which makes the park admission tickets cheaper.

Very beautiful, expect a small hike through a forest. It's best to wear hiking or snow boots otherwise, it can be very slippery in some ares from all the foot traffic. Also, be aware of falling snow on your way through the forest, it will fall without warning. Most importantly do not attempt to touch or feed the monkeys as they will come right next to you.

This is a really well run and maintained park. The monkeys are amazingly docile because of the complete lack of interaction with humans over the years. In winter, they bathe a lot in the pool constructed for them which is very cute. You can get very close so there's lots of opportunities for great pictures. It's a long cold walk, but the path up the mountain is well maintained. It's well worth it! You don't often get the opportunity to see nature this up close and personal. They close at 4PM so don't start your walk too late!

(Translated by Google) A snowy winter day is ideal for seeing monkeys entering the hot springs. The entrance fee for adults is 800 yen. You can almost certainly meet monkeys bathing in hot springs, but it's hard to walk on a mountain road that has a bad footing for about 40 minutes each way. Be careful of monkey mischief. (Translated by Google) I stayed at Yudanaka Onsen and stopped by to see a monkey soaking in the winter hot springs. It's about 5km from Yudanaka Station, but you can't see the monkeys entering the hot spring unless you walk a 1km or more unpaved mountain road from the local parking lot. Especially in winter, you can see many monkeys bathing in hot water, so you can forget about the cold and look at it. Being used to people, monkeys will come near you, but please do not feed them. Also note that it is dangerous to touch a monkey just because a little child is cute. At the parking lot, souvenirs are sold inside the building, so many people buy merchandise to commemorate their visit.

The road to Snow monkeys park are very beautiful and just have 2 "hard" stairs (for those who have low mobility), besides this, the road is plane and easy to go. Please have in mind that the snow monkey park (where they really stay in the Thermal Bath) is ridiculously small, but worthy the money payed. Inside have a souvenir shopping and bathroom. I recommend like a must to see!

It was nice to visit. Make sure you have good boots for a muddy trail. More interesting in the colder months definitely because the monkeys won’t bath when it’s warm. The walk to the park is really nice and has only a couple of steep parts, so it’s really easy. Watching the monkeys go about their business is really adorable. The entrance fee was 800 JPY in 2023, which I found a bit high for what you get. If I visited again, I would come in the winter/early spring.

It's a must on your bucket list if you love monkeys. I caught the Limited express Snow Monkey from Nagano Station and got on the local bus which drops you off. Walk about 10min, past the cafe (where you will have the best apple ice cream in the world) up past a gift shop. The stairs next to it will take you to the Park roughly about 30min walk. What a beautiful walk once you are there the monkeys will not disappoint, I was there from 2pm. Make sure you check the live Web Cam and see yourself 😆🐒. PS so so Mandy babies 🤣

Visited during late September, by this time most of the monkeys are gone to other areas and can't be seen. Only one could be spotted. The monkey Onsen is easily accessed by bus and a 2km walk through a beautiful forest. There are toilets at the start of the trail and at the Onsen entrance. For those coming from Nagano it is recommended to buy an all in one ticket which includes 2 days pass to trains, buses and park entrance.

Traversing the autumn landscape of Snow Monkey Park, where the absence of snow didn't diminish the enchantment. Although it was raining and the muddy paths posed a challenge, the availability of boot rentals came to the rescue, ensuring our comfort during the journey. The cold air, the quiet forest, and the decision to offer boots showcased the park's commitment to visitor satisfaction. As we approached the hot springs, the rain added a mystical quality to the setting, making the playful antics of the snow monkeys even more captivating. Despite the weather's unpredictability, the thoughtful details, like boot rentals, made the visit to Snow Monkey Park a truly enjoyable adventure.

After a 1 hr bus drive and a 2.5 km walk (uphill on a lovely trail lined with beautiful thick Japanese cedar), you reach the hot water pool and rushing stream and find troops of snow monkeys. Although there was no snow, there were many many monkeys and, as it was freezing, they did go in the hot water to warm up. Spent fun time watching their busy interactions. It was cold so on the way back I stopped in an onsen.

Snow Monkeys Park offers a unique, albeit slightly crowded, experience. The park, though small in size, is a treasure trove for nature lovers. The pathway to the park is scenic, leading to the extraordinary sight of snow monkeys in their natural hot spring habitat. Despite the limited space occasionally feeling crowded, the opportunity to observe these photogenic monkeys up close is unparalleled. The staff's dedication is commendable, and the facilities are well-maintained. Overall, it's a must-visit for an unforgettable glimpse into the serene world of these charming creatures. A truly remarkable, photogenic encounter!

Definitely visiting the park is worth the trip. However do not set your expectations too high as the white snow perfect pictures depend on weather conditions. Check the forecast to make sure there is some snow, and go early to avoid the crowds that quickly surround the relatively small pool. However the monkeys are really uesd to human contact, so you can enjoy watching them in other areas of the park. Recommended!!!

This was one of the best places I’ve visited. The best season for you’ll to visit this place would be winter, mainly because you want to see the monkeys bathing in the hot springs. You’ll see the monkeys during the other season as well, but they would be enjoying the hot spring. They’ll be running around as normal monkeys do.

We got there early (about 8:45 am) and there was already a queue of about a dozen people. Doors opened at 9 am sharp. We went in and they had just put some food down so there were plenty of monkeys around. They are not fazed by humans and seem to go about their normal business all around you. The track up was a little bit muddy so wear suitable shoes. It has also been a relatively warm winter for japan so there wasn’t really much snow and ice on the ground. In normal winters I imagine it could be a lot more slippery. After about 9:30/10 it started to get much busier and it wasn’t the same atmosphere as there were a lot more people. The monkeys also seemed to thin out a bit as well but I don’t know if that is a what normally happens. We were a bit concerned it would be too ‘artificial’ with the moneys enticed by food to come to the pool. However it was a great experience and they seemed to act as if we weren’t there which was good. Worth the trip up. We also spent the night in the local town sampling the Onsens. It was an unexpected bonus.

A stunning experience and a must if you're experiencing any traditional winter activities in Nagano. You are lead through a gorgeous forested path, past hot springs (for humans) and a geyser to the monkey park. The monkeys are not fazed at all by humans so you can watch them socialize, feed and bathe naturally. They often come up to people and can get very close! But they are wild animals, so it's best to respect their space.

Nice place, easy to access thanks to a local bus. However it is a long way. The little monkeys are cute and not aggressive (if you don’t bother them too much). I did not stay much time as it was boring after some time, hence the 3 stars, too far and cost some money for a quite boring experience. To do if you have lots of time and flexible budget.

Very interesting place to visit in snow days. Though the walking distance is too much but it’s worthy to give a try. Snow days visit means you will have chance to see the monkey inside onsen. However good weather days those monkey don’t go to Bath inside onsen & just walk around. By the way, please bring your water or coffee while visiting this area. There are no vending machine for any water or juice or coffee purchase from the ticket booth after a long hike/walk.

This is a must visit place if happened to be in Nagano. It is usually pretty crowded as it is one of the most famous touristic destinations in japan. It is famous for its monkeys, that like sitting and relaxing in the onsen. You will have to walk for more than 20 minutes to reach here, but it is surely worth it. The views are spectacular during the winter season.

Pro tip: Go on the park website, which has a live stream of the park, so you can preview whether there is any snow the day before making your journey there, assuming you want to see both snow and monkey. ;) Also check weather forecast and dress warm for the long walk. Finally checked off my bucket list. Overall great experience, even though the onsen setup felt a bit artificial, but nonetheless really cool to see the monkeys enjoying the onsen area, having fun whilst being comfortable/oblivious to all the people around (myself included) taking photos. Mid-Late December is probably a good time to come here, as snow starts falling and it may not be as cold as Jan/Feb. ~50 min to 1 hr bus ride to get there from Nagano station, plus another 45 min walk in snow, so wear good warm shoes. Road could be a bit slippery, and saw some folks had spikes strapped on their shoes. The bus was full on a weekday, though the bus company arranged an extra bus so nobody got left behind. Last tip: buy the 2-day snow monkey park pass at the tourist info center at Nagano station, if you want to save a few hundred yen. Cover the bus rides and admission fee. Always good to ask staff about schedule and tips whilst there. They are very helpful and speak some English.

THIS WAS THE CUTEST ADVENTURE EVER !! I LOVE MONKEYS!! We got to access the monkey park with the nagano pass we had, as it gives you one free visit. It started snowing really really hard on the way through the trail (personally it helped my shoes grip to the ground so i wouldn’t slip) so by the time we got there it was like a winter wonderland. We got to see monkeys everywhere as it was a bit early in the morning. Some started fighting and some jumped out of their hot spring but nonetheless, absolutely the cutest!!

Great experience! My photos are from mid March. I would go earlier if you want to see more snow as it had well and truly started to melt when I was there. But, the monkeys were very active (breeding season) and it wasn’t overflowing with tourists. There are some places to eat on the way, and the walk from the park entrance back to the train station is nice and passes several onsens. Cute souvenir shop that is fairly priced. The park is well maintained.

Snow monkeys are trained to live with humans. They walk and play with us in their natural setting. They're not afraid nor intimidated by humans' interactions. You can enjoy taking pictures and videos with them but without flash. You can't feed nor touch them. There is a cafe restaurant at a reasonable price. It was snowing when we got there, so please wear a coat and winter boots. The road can be slippery, a number of tourists that time slipped by wearing rubber and leather shoes. Good place for kids and everyone who loves nature and animals.

Wow!!!! Definitely worth a visit, even coming to the area just for this experience. There are so many monkeys once you reach the onsen, they bathe there, have little fights, play - it was lovely to watch them. We were lucky enough to see a lot of baby monkeys as well (march-may I think is a good time to go). The weather wasn't perfect but there were still a lot of monkeys for all the visitors to see. 800 yen is also a fair price. The 'hike' there is very easy, also with kids or even a wheelchair. There are restrooms next to the park.

Great place to visit and experience. There a short walk to where the monkeys hang out. Once there you will buy your entrance ticket. You can spend as much time as you like. There is a worker who feeds the mommies so they will hang out most of the day.

The trek up to the park is a bit of a walk but it's worth it. The monkeys aren't restricted to the park boundaries, they essentially call the shots and are lounging about all over the place. Once you start to reach the hot spring area, you'll see them playing about. They are absolutely adorable, you're almost jealous at how relaxed and carefree they are. It's amazing to see how well integrated they are with tourists!

In order to get into this place, you must walk about 25 minutes along a path surrounded by many trees.🌴 Even if it was a bit far, snow monkeys are definitely worth the visit. They were trained and they were nice to human. 🩵🐵 If you like walking, hiking and going to the wild, I recommended you this place 🫶

Went during the hottest months of the year and there were still monkeys in the onsen. I would definitely recommend coming here during both winter and summer for different experiences. The walk to the park was enjoyable and signs were easy to follow. From all the warning signs, I’m guessing it’s a much more dangerous trek in the winter. The monkeys were indifferent to humans; the park managers have done a fantastic job of ensuring tourists aren’t feeding or bothering the monkeys. This made it a much more enjoyable experience as we got to observe them closely without worrying about how they’d react to us.

It was so amazing to see all those monkeys in the hotspring bath, especially in winter time. We walked one and a half miles to get to this beatiful place. There were park rangers who watch this touristy place with care. They regularly feed these creatures and make sure everyone is safe with their protocols. Love this place.

We went in September which was a nice 24oC but there was no snow obviously. However there were still plenty of monkeys everywhere playing with each other around the trees and bushes but didn't really go in the hot spring which is understandable. There were always two keepers around to keep an eye of everything as well as feed them which was fun to watch. It is a bit of a commute to get out here but well worth it as the monkeys are calm and passive and there are soooo many of them.

nice monkeys. the walk up was about 1.6km or 30minutes, as we took our time. Wet but not slippery upslope / downslope. Great time there!! Spent about 1.5hours, which was the recommended on reviews here (1-2hours). Well worth the visit 👍👍

During the winter the monkeys bath in the onsen to keep warm. According to our guide, the park scatters seeds and grain to encourage the monkeys to come down but they do not trap them there hence if you come during the hotter days there might be no monkeys visible at the park. Trekked about 45minutes each way to get to and from the park. Shoes with grip is a must during winter season trust me- and leave the white shoes at home as soil and water will splash with every step!

A magical experience! The snow covered path leading to the park was so beautiful. Expect a 25 minute walk to see the monkeys. It was great to see them bathing at the onsen, they don't seem bothered by visitors. A good tip would be to research the weather conditions before going. I've seen some low reviews complaining about how the ground was muddy, etc. Research first, make sure to go on a snowy day and the experience would be amazing! Would not recommend to go in times when there is no snow, path will be muddy and wet. Monkeys will also not go to the onsen if its not cold. Research the weather before going!

A rather busy place to visit, but worth the trip for the famous monkeys. There is a little parking at the bottom of the hill but I wouldn’t rely on it, as there are many more visitors than spaces. Lots of onsen and cafes are within easy reach too. Entry to see the monkeys is ¥800 for adults. If you are disabled you can get a discount, but they require proof. In order to reach the monkeys you’ll need to walk through the woods for about 2km. It can be rather uneven and muddy. You can buy or rent appropriate footwear at the start of the trail, but it’d make more sense to prepare ahead. Touching and feeding the animals is forbidden.

Made my day to see how these monkeys take care of their babies. Is a 1,9 km walk until where the monkeys are, but totally enjoyable. These monkeys are friendly, not scary at all. But be careful and do not touch them! They walk around you carelessly,?

The walk was super muddy and a good distance uphill. I recommend wearing some good water resistant shoes if you go. After you finish and return down the mountain there is a nice little shop that sells some yummy snacks and hot chocolate before you return to your car.

Lot of monkeys running around hot spring and mountains. I enjoy the park. Entrance fee is 800 Japanese yen. Every hotel has free shuttle to the parking lot where everyone need to walk to the park. Better in winter to visit because the monkey will soak in the hot spring showing their vuteness

I can't explain how beautiful and peaceful is that place , it was really a good decision I made by visiting that spot. The view of the houses inside the snow , also the monkeys around you everywhere , let go of the monkeys having a hot bath in this very cold weather almost -10°c , will make you feel very relieved. You will need to hike about 2km on the snowy mountain, and then you will reach your destination, trees with ice on them is a really nice view also monkeys on some of these trees. Monkeys are a little bit shy (Japanese) ? , so whenever you look at them they will always look the other side .

Lovely 30 minute walk through forrest with snow dusted trees to see the snow monkeys. I could imagine this experience would be all the more special if there was more snow and it was snowing. It wasn’t quite cold enough for monkeys to get in the water, however it was still a fun place to visit and the baby monkeys playing were particularly cute. Great fun for kids.

  • 5/5 Julie C. 4 years ago on Google
It was well worth the trip, even though it was just cold and without the snow. They are very cute. One can check the camera online to observe the time the monkeys are out the previous day, if you want to see them in hot spring. Otherwise, many are up in the hills that you can observe as well.

Although it is located deep in the mountains, it is fully equipped and you can use credit cards at the shops. It is unlikely that there will be a monkey because the staff will catch it with the bait, but it is possible to check if there is a monkey monitor installed at the entrance of the mountain. There are monkeys, geysers, rivers and birds along the way, and it is the best sightseeing spot when you can enjoy walking, watching and listening. There are many Westerners among tourists, and a mysterious global feeling is also enjoyed. At the entrance of the mountain, there are many restaurants and open air, and it is prosperous even though it is far from Shibu Onsen. The point to note is that it is a world-famous spot, so people can't be killed on the way, so it's unlikely that you'll be in distress.) Also, the entrance fee is unexpectedly high. I walked for a while to the hot spring for monkeys, which is the main attraction of Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, but as I walked there, the number of monkeys gradually increased and the surrounding area was surrounded by monkeys. I felt a little scared. I thought I wouldn't go into this hot spring because it was hot and there was no snow, but when a courageous monkey jumped in, other monkeys jumped in one after another. I could see a monkey slowly bathing in the hot spring during the cold season, but I visited because it was warm, so I could leave the hot spring immediately. There is a 1 day-2 day park ticket + train/bus ride to the park combo package of some sort. Do it. It's worth it. I regret not doing more research on getting to this place but good thing I had enough cash. Once you took all of the trains and buses in the world to get close to the park, you still need to walk about 30min to get to the actual park. The scenery getting there makes it all worth it. It's so untouched and beautiful. The monkey park itself is not big and they don't guarantee sighting of the monkeys. I was lucky how many of them were hanging out on the day I went. Plenty of them chilling in the onsen and no you cannot jump in with them. There's a park ranger/rep person there ready to blow whistle if you're getting too close.

Honestly speaking I didn’t find this place very amusing except that I could find many monkeys in a pool of water!!. The infrastructure is not well organized or kept tidy. For me it was kind of waste of time. Few inputs I would like to share here - There is almost 30 minutes climb to reach to the place. The trail is muddy and slippery if it rains or snows. Carry your hiking boots and gears along to have a safe walk. - There seems to be few places which emits sulfur dioxide gas. It may make asthma patients sick, so please take precautions. - Parking can be crowded and if you are not lucky you might have to park bit far away from the spot and walk around 15 min to reach the hiking trail. - As far as I am concerned, there were not very many good restaurants in and around the place, so plan accordingly. - You are not allowed to carry Food or plastic while hiking. So make sure to secure those in your car or backpack.

Great experience to see snow monkey up close. However, they weren’t soaking in the onsen. I guess it’s too hot for them now. If you want to see them soaking, do come when it’s snowing heavily. Might come again to see that if there’s a chance again. Otherwise, it was an awesome experience seeing them interact with each other. Playful and cute.

Bucket list in Nagano is checked ✔️ Just 1 hour bus ride from Nagano station. It’s uphill going to the place and you really need a good hiking shoes as it could get slippery on winter. As you reach near the place the whole place opens up with a wide beautiful scenery of mountain and river. The snow monkey’s pool is located all the way to the end and you’ll have the best time once you see them in the hot spring bath. Just make sure you don’t bring any plastic because they could get attracted to that. The good thing is there is a guard keeping an eye for anything that could happen for the safety of the tourists.

The biggest sight seeing destination in Nagano is this Snow Monkey park. So beautiful place to visit in winters, beautiful mountains covered in snow. Its fun to watch monkeys soaking in onsen. Its a run of 1.40 hours from Tokyo in Shinkansen. Then take a Nagano Dentetsu bus from Bus station No. 23 from East exit. The ticket coat for bus is 1500 Yen one-way. Then yo can start train walk of around 2.8 KM. Its a slippery train if covered in snow. You can rent shies, winter coats and Caps or gloves before starting the walk. There is one cafe before starting the trail. The entrance ticket for the park is 800 Yen for adults and 680 for kids.

Best place to experience the view of snow monkeys. Please do check the live stream camera of jigokudani online to know whether the monkeys are there in the onsen before planning to visit. 2 day pass can be purchased from Nagano station which includes 2 days travel via train/bus and one time visit pass inside the snow monkey park. Best time to visit is in December end when the snowfall has started.

まさに百聞は一見に如かずのところです!お猿可愛すぎます。 After the broadcasting by a foreign TV company during Nagano Olympic, this hot spring became a very famous sightseeing spot because this is the only one place which the monkeys soak in the spa in the world. The formal name is Jigokudani Yaen-Koen. To go to the monkey park, be sure you are dressed warm enough because you will be wanting to stay longer when you see monkeys. In fact, the name of this park area is called "Jigokudani" means hell valley because the area is surrounded by steep cliffs with geysers, it seems like hell. However, for the monkeys, this spa is just perfect heaven. When you observe monkeys... 1. Do not touch or stare at their eyes... they get scared. 2. Do not feed them. 3. No cats, dogs, or animals in this park. Even though about 200 monkeys live in this area, not all the monkeys get in the spa. They are mainly females and their children. Their behaviors are so cute to observe and forget the time passing...

It's a truly magical place with lots of wild monkeys in and out of the tub - unbothered by people. I wouldn't recommend petting one, but they'll definitely walk around you and hide behind you if another monkey gets angry at them. The park is about a thirty minute, easy hike from the closest parking lot. There are actually two decent restaurants near the entrance of the hike and one off another trail during the hike. Not many (if any) convenient stores in town, so consider the Lawson near the main station. You'll love it.

It’s better to go in January or February it seems if you want to see the snow macaques in the spring. We went late December where there was snow (might require snow chains to get to parking lot), but it was apparent that it was not that cold for the Japanese macaques wanted to take a dip in the water. We spent three hours there, and during that time only one ventured in. However, just a week afterwards a friend showed us pictures of the park with three of them relaxing in the hot spring (with more snow)!

The 20-30 minute hike from the nearest bus stop to the park is extremely beautiful. It's very much advised to use boots with traction as the snow falling from the tree tops fall on the ground and turn into ice. The most beautiful nature walk I have ever seen in my life. The whole mountain was quiet and covered with blankets of snow. The trail was very safe in my opinion and clearly created to make the most comfortable walk possible. If you stop walking you can not hear anything and it is beautiful. The area with the monkeys was lively but not crowded. The monkeys will walk right by you. But please leave them be. They do not bother us so please do not bother them. But things is most of the roads are flat. On the other hand other parking lot is close to the park and it will cost you 500¥. Which is ok. But the 3km road is very narrow and scary for me. Beautiful park! Good natural habitat for the monkeys. Also very interesting to find out, how the monkeys live in all 4 seasons. Though the monkeys there have grown accustomed to humans, they do not bother the visitors and like wise we should do the same to observe them… As visitors, we need to be responsible and not leave rubbish lying ard. It is not easy for the staff to up keep the park, hard work for the staff to ensure the safety of both the visitors and monkeys. The path is slippery during winter, walk with care and put on a good pair of boots or cramp-on metal spikes, can be rented at the gift shop.

Really loved my visit to the Snow Monkey Park. Highly recommend 🐒 The walk there was pleasant and mostly flat, with only a couple of inclines at the start and finish. It was precarious at times due to the melting ice. However, i managed it in a pair of trusty Converse by simply taking my time. There weren't many monkeys in the hot spring as the weather was beginning to warm, if you want to catch them with the snow then I recommend going in February or earlier into the snow season; definitely bring snow boots for the trek then. The park was larger than I thought it would be, which is nice. There are many babies/young monkeys. The smell wasn't too bad at the time of my visit (start of March).

  • 5/5 Andreas W. 1 year ago on Google
We visited despite the weather being really rainy and we are so glad we did! The way up, despite the poor weather, was no problem since it was very well maintained. The path up is easy to traverse. We were also pleased with the little shop and the facilities. You can get really close to the animals and if you follow the guidelines, you are absolutely safe. Experiencing the monkeys up close really is something special. The animals are not caged and can leave if they want to. Overall I can more than recommend the experience.

We went in the summer and it was a great day. Easy trip from Tokyo by bullet train. Less crowded in the summer and fun for children as well. The walk in is beautiful and an easy, well maintained trail.

The Park is wonderful, even in summer. No crowds, and the baby monkeys are adorable. We visited in July and had brought heavy footwear in case of a muddy trail. We needn't have worried. Could have walked in our sneakers. A few patches of mud, but nothing big.

Great park, easy hike to see a bunch of snow monkeys. There are many baby monkeys as well. They are so cute and naughty. A tip, if you take bus to get there with luggage, you can store them at the museum cafe next to the bus stop.

Monkey family in their natural habitat enjoying a hot springs onsen. There are several generations of a big family. There is a warning at the park entrance saying monkey presence is not guaranteed, so you may decide to check the park webcam before marching 30 min and buy a ticket.

5 stars for the very cute monkeys. 2 stars for getting there. Bus drops at main road so need to walk in. Very convenient taxi service from Yudanaka Station cost <2000 yen. But need to book a return ride. Then walk 1.5km along a nature trail, when wet is muddy. Don't wear anything new. Still worth visiting.

Amazing experience seeing monkeys taking a bath and free. They walk next to you without fear, but NO TOUCHING! It was great being so close to them but still respecting their living environment. We arrived at the perfect time for their feeding time and we could see them bathing.

Long walk from the carpark (30mins one way) but it was a nice scenic walk through the forest which was well paved. We were really lucky it started snowing that day which made the walk much nicer. Floor was really muddy so don't wear your white shoes or any shoes you want to keep clean. Alternatively you can rent boots at the store beside the entrance for 800 yen so u don't have to dirty your shoes. The toilet beside the carpark has an area with brushes for you to clean ur shoes after. The roads get quite slippery during winter so please watch your step. The park is actually quite small with two main areas where the monkeys congregate, but the main attraction would be the onsen that they are all in. The monkeys will occasionally run along the walking path and they seem to be really used to having humans around. Really nice place to visit for a half day trip

Highly recommended park to visit. Went early in the morning around 9am where the crowds haven’t arrived and the park rangers started to feed the monkeys. Got to see troops of monkeys coming down the mountains… hundreds of them.

A great experience. This was our second time visiting. You cannot feed the monkeys but you can observe them naturally. Each time we visited there was over 100 monkeys enjoying the onsen and playing along the river, running between people. The park can get quite busy so I recommend getting there early.
