What happened? Where is the compassion? Why are these cages so small, so plain, so boring and so run down. I literally felt like I was visiting a prison. See photos for the reality that these animals are facing. It is cruel and truly baffling since Japan is a rich and abundant country. Do better everyone. And everyone who left a positive review? Shame on you. Imagine yourself trapped in a single room with nothing but sand like the kangaroos. Imagine yourself trapped behind bars in a barren enclosed cell with a dozen others like the monkeys. Imagine being isolated and locked away without any friends like the bison. Imagine strolling the same small space when you’re a big powerful polar bear. How would you feel? Imagine a tiny cute enclosure with a stick hut, some tiny bare trees and some ladders with a friend. And all you and your friend do is do tiny laps around your tiny home all day every day. This zoo brought me to tears. Do better humanity. Don’t support this animal cruelty everyone. Don’t continue the vicious cycle until they make the necessary and absolutely needed improvements for all the animals. And yes, I know some of the animal cages were being cleaned but does that excuse the zoo for placing these beautiful creatures in prisons? Both sets of habitats were terrible. And their outside habitats were obviously too small for their size.

The space is great for humans, but not that good for the animals. Many cages are small and the animals seem obviously bored or stressed. In cold winter it was sad to see many hot weather beings in small rooms; a very artificial environment. It looked like a prison for the sake of people’s entertainment. It’s absolutely awful to have such a well developed country as Japan presenting a structure that absolutely doesn’t attend the animal's basic needs. They were all taken from their lives, families and environments; the least we can do is to give the necessary conditions for them to have a pleasant life. Ueno Zoo should make the cages bigger, even if that means holding less animals. Also, I have visited many zoos that are concerned in explaining the origin of the animals (if it was rescued from illegal trades, etc), I’m not aware if these informations are available somewhere, but I would like to see them more easily in Ueno Zoo, it is a very basic transparency policy. About how we were treated as visitors in the Zoo, all the staff was very kind and professional. The walking areas were nice. I wish the store stayed opened a little longer, when the Zoo was 15 minutes from closing, it seemed we couldn’t do anything else inside, but to go to an exit. If you’re visiting Tokyo and have some spare time, it’s definitely worth visiting, specially if you’ve never had the chance to observe Asian animals. Let’s pressure Ueno Zoo to give better conditions to the animals.

I went on a national holiday, sports day even though many people had a holiday it was not crowded. The price of admission is very reasonable I believe for a senior ticket I paid $2 which is for what you get outstanding value I would highly recommend this zoo. There seems to be a lot of things set up for children. The park is well laid out in easy to walk most areas are hard type surfaces so for folks that are mobility impaired with wheelchairs it's an easily accessed facility.

THE BEST ZOO IVE EVER BEEN TO. With its ticket price (600yen), it is extremely top tier. The line to see pandas was really long and the pandas were sleeping. But the rest of the zoo is phenomenal. Staff is kind, animals look good. I love it and will definitely return.

My son and I hate going to zoo. So, when my husband told us we should visit the zoo while we were in Ueno because the zoo is the oldest one in Tokyo (may be Japan), we just said yes. After visiting the zoo, we were all very impressed. The entrance fee is very cheap. The place is well maintained, very clean. Animals are well fed. We really enjoyed our time in this zoo. It’s not smelly like your typical zoo. This zoo is more like a Japanese garden. Lots of trees every where. The place is huge. If you decide to come here, it’s probably a 3-4hrs (at least) visit and make sure you wear a comfortable shoes. Lots of uphill walk 😅 Highly recommend it!!!!

Very nice and big zoo with some exotic animals you won't find in the other zoos in the area. Some points to improve are: - there must be a better way to organize the panda exhibit, we had to wait 50min to give a quick peek at the panda cubs and it was totally not worth it, I should have invested this time seeing other animals, the older panda (that didn't have a line to see) was much better and more active - some of the animal enclosures are very small, very far from the big enclosures in zoorasia. - most animals are taken away by 4pm, the zoo could as well close earlier as you can't see anything anymore 1h before the closing time

Went there in September 2015 so it has been a while but it can also be food to see what has evolved since then. I do avoid zoos since I have been to this one and for several reasons. The entry was 6 euros at the time, which was kind of shocking to me -until I realized literally everything inside has to be paid for so it made more sense. The decorations and landscapes inside the zoo's are breathtaking, I think this is the part I enjoyed the most our of everything. I truly hope these are still here today. But then one memory that is still burning in my brain is the one of the polar bear, obviously underweight and bored, with distressing behaviour. People were hitting the window and stressing him out even more. I hope by now the polar bear is not here anymore or better taken care of. There are so many more things to do and discover in Tokyo 💙

Amazing zoo! We wandered here not actually planning to enter but decided to check it out. The tickets were ¥550 for adults and kids up to 12 could get in for free (wow)! There are two sections that divide this zoo and once you enter, you can tell that the main attraction are the pandas. There are many different animals from flamingos, to hawks, to giraffes, to tigers, to gorillas, to alligators and so on and so forth. I really love animals so I was completely needing out and taking countless pictures and videos. They really created a man made habitat for some of the birds as there is a huge pond that have some geese living there. I guess they stay there instead of flying away because it’s to their liking. The next time I’m in Japan, I’d definitely come back. It’s also worth mentioning that at the time I’m here, there are twin pandas. The line up to see them had literally hundreds of people waiting sleuth a wait time of 1 hour. This was during the week and not tourist season so I can’t imagine how long it typical takes to see them.

Very cool zoo, a ton of stuff to see, and very cheap. Make sure you get there early, lots of stuff closes before the park does, and you can easily spend an entire day here. The Panda exhibit is worth it depending on your line waiting tolerance and how long the line is. You get about 10 minutes in the area viewing pandas, at least when I went there. I recommend bringing your own food, its pretty expensive in there. Top exhibits are the Animals of Africa, the Bear Hill, and the Vivarium. Though you probably want to go see whatever animals you like

It looks great at the first, but soon enough you will notice that almost all animals look sick, or not get enough care?! I didn't take any bear 🐻 zone picture because they all look very sad 😢 Please take a good look at those 🐻🐻🐻, you will get tears in the eyes 😢 The pizza I ordered was way to dark, and there is no way for me to exchange a new one because no one speaks English here! Sad experience. 😭 Price: 💰💰 Food: 🥲 Envr.: 🥲

You can find several species of animals from East Asia and other parts of the world. To see the pandas, you will need to wait about 50 minutes and you will only be able to see them for 2 minutes. Like every other tourist spot in Tokyo, Ueno Zoo has a good infrastructure to receive you and your family. The zoo has places for meals and snacks and also has drinking water fountains available which on sunny days is a great relief! I recommend.

Visited during the autumn 2022. Easily accessible from euno station. Can cover the entire place in 3 hrs, Except the panda. The queue wait time for the panda will be around 40+ minutes sometimes. So better plan for that in advance. Reasonable ticket price.Ticket charge is 600yen for adults (as on Dec2022).

At 12 o'clock during the consecutive holidays, I entered the park with a baby in a stroller, but since there is a limit on the number of people, I can watch it slowly with a rattling impression. Also, I was able to sit and eat at lunchtime without being crowded on the terrace seats. The lotus is blooming a little beautifully, but I think it is more beautiful in the morning. There are many places (mainly indoors) that I can not see, but I think it is unavoidable considering the situation. Amazing zoo! The animals are playful and engaged. Kids had a blast. Thank you Tokyo for a fantastic day! There aren’t any shows but they have cool little activities like Guinea Pig handling sessions. We didn’t get to sign up cos this have to be registered for online via a QR code. Would be good to check that out cos it looked super fun peering in from the windows.

-You can tell the keepers care about the animals and the zoo. All exhibits were extremely clean and the vivariums were decorated with an artistic style reminiscent of Japanese gardens and bonsai cultivation. -They are also actively assisting in conservation efforts. ** Plan your trip/ route ** Some exhibits start closing (ie. moving animals indoors for care and feeding) prior to the actual zoo closing time. -The food is great - the panda dumpling bun was cute and delicious. -There is also a 350 year old ceremonial tea house ** Cherry blossoms are starting to bloom!

The Ueno Zoo is an affordable, must-see destination if you're visiting Tokyo. For someone like me that comes from a medium-sized (~100,000) town, this zoo felt quite large and well-varied. The grounds were immaculate and all of the animals seemed very well cared for, which is always wonderful to see. The two exhibits that ended up being my favorites were the penguins, which were very active and a blast to watch, alongside the gorillas, that are incredible to see in person.

Animals cramped into small, concrete cages. Really feels like something you’d find in in the early-to-mid 1900s rather than 2020. There seems to be very little effort to design enclosures that are more natural for the animals and with their quality of life in mind. Thumbs down.

There is a nursing room and diaper changing space in the park. Strollers can also be rented. Currently, many restaurants are closed due to the corona virus. You can bring your own meals, so it's a good idea to bring your own lunch. Nice zoo located in Ueno Park. Many exhibitions are old and could do with renovating, but generally well kept. Good information provided in both Japanese and English. Extremely busy on public holidays, expect queues to see popular animals (panda queue was 2.5 hours today).

A huge, labyrinthine zoological haven; has a wide variety of animals (although a bummer due to the absence of some like the gorillas - on their monthly check-up; polar bears are viewable until 2; the tiger enclosure is forest dense so you're gonna have to be real patient to see them). It's a really great place to take your kids to, to pass the time and to enjoy and learn about wildlife. The vivarium was the cake for moi!

We went here on a friday. It gets crowded due to school excursions and tourists. The main attraction here is Pandas. Entry is cheap. The only part which made me never want to visit this zoo is how other animals are kept. Their cages were not maintained. All animals looked quite weak and no proper ventilation for them, specially bats and polar bears. Condition of the polar bear and penguin was quite poor as they are winter animals but this shelter here was surrounded by sunlight and no ventilation. Seriously heartbreaking

Ueno Zoo in Tokyo is a delightful place to explore. Entry is only 600 JPY, making it an affordable outing. It’s Japan’s oldest zoo, and its commitment to conservation makes it a must-visit. Giant Pandas: These iconic black-and-white bears steal the show. Their bamboo-munching habits and playful antics are a must-see. Don’t miss the chance to witness these gentle giants up close. 🐼🎋 Waited for about 40 minutes to see the panda up close. Plan for a 2-3 hour visit and enjoy this educational and fun experience! 🦁🐼🦒

I was impressed with this sprawling zoo. There were throngs of people there the weekend that I visited but the park-like setting is spacious and well-planned so the animal exhibits were easy to see. The animals seemed cared for and content. There were ample, clean restrooms and innumerable places to eat. The autumn colors in the trees were vibrant.

I wander into zoos everywhere around the world that I go, and this was one of the more interesting ones for sure - mostly because they had a really wide variety of animals and is part of the beautiful Ueno Park. It’s true that some of the enclosures can be improved, but you can tell that the keepers care a lot for the animals. They truly do their best to ensure a positive experience for the animals. Great to see some education, conservation and rehabilitation work going on here for animals that would otherwise not have made it in the wild due to injury. I thoroughly enjoyed watching a hippopotamus up close for the first time, meeting a Hokkaido brown bear, prairie dog, gorilla and aardvark for the first time cos I’ve never seen them in real life before, and the absolute best surprise was that they had not one, but two Pallas Cats - and they were ADORABLE. For the 600 yen entry ticket, it was a fantastic day out in Tokyo that I thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely go back again.

The ticket is very cheap but I would rather pay more for better living conditions for the animals. Staff is friendly but there is not enough room for the animals. The fox kept walking in circles in the cage. The meerkat is alone in a small glass container and keeps staring at the ceiling. One of the polar bears kept clawing at the door. The elephants are chained and placed in a small room. The animals look very sad.

(Translated by Google) I think the good thing about Ueno Zoo is that it is located in the city, but there is a lot of greenery, and there are surprisingly many different animals to enjoy. However, it still has a smell compared to Tobu Zoo, so it may be difficult for those who are not good at smelling. Some of them are cafeteria-like, so you don't have to worry about eating and drinking, and there are benches where you can take a break. Since it is outdoors, I think there is some sense of security in Corona. The entrance fee is cheap and the cost performance is quite good, which is a good point of Ueno Zoo. Worth visiting to see the pandas, outside of that it’s no different to any other zoo and I’m not too keen on the idea of keeping these animals in captivity where there isn’t a conservationist justification for it as there is with the pandas in this context. Bear in mind if you are visiting to see the pandas, there is generally quite a large queue and you only get a fixed amount of time to walk through the viewing area of their enclosure so be prepared for that.

Inexpensive, quite large and very central in Tokyo. There are many animals on display, but they don't have many of each. The enclosures also seem quite small and not very inspired. Good place to visit for a few hours, but not spectacular.

Worth visiting the zoo, there is a giant panda, shoebill, giraffes, elephants, penguins, flamingos and many others. Tickets can be bought online and in place. We waited for 10-20 minutes to buy them. It was not crowded since the area is huge. There are cafes and souvenir shops.

You have to come early since many species are off-display after certain hours. Polar bear is off 14:30, Avarium 16:00, Pandas 15 or 16:00 I am also very suspicious about the animal treatment in the zoo. 300-400 species inside 36 acres? Big animals such as Giraffes, Rhinoceros, Bears and also smaller animals have such limited area to roam freely. You will notice after a while that the animals are sad. They barely move and if they move, then they walk in circles or back and forth... Very cheap ticket though 600 yen... However, I would rather pay 5000 yen if I knew the animals were happy

The animals live in very small cages that are not appropriate for their size, especially the large animals, such as the polar bear, red pandas, and the black and white pandas. The all pace back and forth in their cages and seem very stressed and bored. The zoo facilities are very nice. The staff is friendly. The tickets are quite cheap for the size and variety of the zoo. Let's hope Ueno Zoo can improve to offer more humane conditions to the animals. As is, I would not recommend anyone to visit this zoo because it looks like a prison.

(Translated by Google) Due to corona, as of August 2020, it is fully reserved and admitted. Reservations for the next week starting from 9 am every Tuesday will be accepted online and by phone, but due to the competition, it will be filled in about 5 minutes on the weekend. Instead, you will receive some benefits if you make a reservation. Luckily, I had a reservation for Saturday, so I decided to wait in line 10 minutes before the reservation time. Even at this point, everyone is lined up while keeping an eye on the air and ensuring a social distance. However, you can enter until the reservation time + 15 minutes, and there is no advantage even if you enter in a hurry, so the last person can enter smoothly. After that, show the QR code of your reservation and identification (health insurance card was also acceptable), buy a ticket, and go inside. At first, everyone passes through the panda stables, so you can definitely see it. Instead, shooting is prohibited. It's lonely, though to prevent a stop. After that, you can freely go around the park, but first there are few people! ! I think there are fewer people than in the park on weekdays. Everywhere in the park, you can see it very slowly and calmly. This will be a very fresh experience for families who can only go to the zoo on weekends. Instead, the indoor exhibition is almost closed. Therefore, I could not see anteaters, naked mole rats, meerkats, reptile halls, etc. And since the monorail is also out of service, I will walk a little to the Shinobazu pond side. It was a little difficult because I was with children. There are also shuttle buses, but since there are up to 6 passengers at one time due to corona measures, the probability of getting to the bus stop and getting on immediately is very low. Even if you deduct them, the price is 600 yen for adults, and it is very valuable to be able to see the vacant Ueno Zoo on Saturdays and Sundays. It's worth trying desperately to make a reservation.

(Translated by Google) Currently (as of October 2020), I will make a reservation for a numbered ticket on the web due to Corona and purchase the ticket on the day. Reservation starts every Saturday from 9 o'clock, but it was quite difficult to make a reservation on Saturday and Sunday because it is a very competitive battle. However, because the number of people in the park is limited, I was able to go around quite smoothly except for the panda building. As for the panda house, you can't take a picture for the first time at Xiang Xiang, so you can just see it. After the second photo shoot, you will be lined up, so you will have to wait about 30 minutes. When the park is about to close, everyone will line up again, so we recommend that you go early. The lights were absolutely gorgeous. It would have been nice if they had another line open for members to go through when arriving. It was a very nice time and everyone entering the zoo was required to wear a mask. Lots of familes laughing and enjoying themselves. You can see why the Toledo Zoo has won, the best lights award. If you have young children make sure to bring a stroller or wagon since there is a lot of walking. The only side open is the Anthony Wayne side.

I went there to see the Shoebill storks🥰 They have fantastic personalities. Due to the restrictions, you can book a ticket online through a gacha-system, two times/month. You have to be lucky! Check the Zoo's website to access the page to make your ticket reservation. The Zoo is the most amazing one I ever visited. One day however is a very short time to see everything. I recommend booking multiple times in advance.

We visited this zoo on a Saturday and it was very busy. The lines to see the Panda Bears were over an hour long, so we opted to skip seeing them. We spent the day enjoying seeing the animals, but many were in an enclosure by themselves and seemed lonely. I was impressed by the long history of Ueno Zoo (100 plus years) and the diversity of animals hosted in the zoo. The animals are well kept in clean and safe habitat stimulated to their species. The admission fee is cheap compare to the size of the zoo. Wonder why the Polar bear don’t have their coke with him? Don’t know if the giant panda know any kung Fu? But one thing is definite, Ueno Zoo is the place you must visit especial you have a daughter or/and a son travelling with you.

Really big zoo, lots of unique animals. Polar bear is amazing! The only downside was that we stood in line for the twin pandas for 30mins only to barely see them behind the trees. I recommend verifying you can actually see the pandas when you line up, and also know that there are two panda lines! The second one (big pandas) had no line at all and we actually saw much more than the long line.

The Zoo is super cheap and we managed to see lots of animals including pandas. The line for the pandas was an hour long so we went and did some other things and just happened to sort of run into the woman putting them away for the night and got to go see them with a very small group at about 430pm. Make sure to check what time the exhibits close as some animals go off exhibit at 3-4pm. Only giving 4 stars rather than 5 as some of the animals were in some less than ideal conditions (see photo of the Guinea pigs and bunnies).

  • 4/5 Rebecca L. 4 years ago on Google
Decent comprehensive collection of animals well kept here - they even kept many of the African animals like gorillas, giraffes, etc. inside rather than in their outdoor cages due to the recent cold winter of Japan. Too bad I missed them now but hopefully can see them mid next year. P/S: come earlier IF you want to see the giant panda in here. The queue for it can be super long.

Oldest zoo in Japan with many animals exhibits. Nice to walk around and look and learn about the various animals. Some of the enclosures look a bit dated, but there are upgrading works in the zoo so hopefully they are rebuilding better and bigger enclosures for the animals. Entrance fee is cheap (Y600 per adult, free for children below 12). Food options and gift shops available.

  • 5/5 Kyu Hwan Y. 4 years ago on Google
The Ueno zoo is a very nice place to go for a family trip or even for a date, since it's not just a zoo, it is also partly a park~ The price is very cheap compared to all the things you can see and do there.(600¥ adult, 200¥ children) The zoo also has a panda, who is a main attraction to many visitors, so be prepared to stand in line for a long time to see a panda for a few minutes. Sadly I was very unlucky and waited to 90min just to see a sleeping panda from afar. All in all a very nice place where you can spend a few hours without getting bored~

  • 3/5 Stephanie B. 4 years ago on Google
There are some nice animal exhibits here and it was a good was to kill time for 2 hours before our train. However, it's was disappointing that there were huge lines to see the panda which meant that we missed out. There are also a lot of enclosures shut at this time. The monorail was also closed. The zoo is quite big so be prepared for some walking while the monorail is shut.

We thoroughly enjoyed this zoo on our visit to Japan. I loved the way the zoo was set-up and the animal enclosures were cool too. The tickets are cheap and we spent a good portion of the day here. We were in line just before the zoo opened and we headed straight to the line for the Pandas once we were in, totally worth it! The food was also pretty good, I would definitely visit this zoo again.

Great zoo with lots to see. The giant panda exhibit is fun, and the tigers, gorillas, and bears are always exciting to see up close. Compared to American zoos it is extremely affordable both in entry price and in-park food & gift shops. Some of the bigger African exhibits close earlier than the rest of the park, so make sure to hit those early in the day if you want to see Giraffes, Elephants, Rhinos or others.

There were not a ton of animals, but we got to see an eagle, owl, Huskies, and 2 giraffes. Not worth it with a crabby infant and 2.5 year old with a 1 hour drive, but would recommend to someone with older kiddos and less of a drive!

Great zoo our family has many wonderful memories here. As usual, some enclosures are a little small but they are doing their best with limited funding and you can tell that staff work hard and care a lot about the animals. Such a great place to take kids, very walkable and a beautiful layout.

A must go place to see the amazing lightings of Christmas if you’re in Toledo. But heads up! It is really windy and cold so take preparations accordingly. Despite that, it doesn’t stop the vibe of Christmas.

A good place to visit for a day. You can complete the entire zoo in roughly 3-4 hours. It is very well connected. Please do not follow Google maps as the entry to zoo has been only through main gate due to the Covid 19. Refer the website for the correct entry gate. There are lot of exotic animals in the zoo. Giant Panda, Red panda, polar bear, seal and penguin are the few collection that cannot be seen in many zoos. You cannot click photographs of the panda if they are not playing in the park or put in the glass exhibit. Many exhibit may remain close so refer the website before visiting. There are lot of vulnerable birds also. Please ensure that you do not feed any animals or disturb them. Hopefully enjoy your day and do not forget to take your kids with you.

Nice public zoo at the center of Tokyo city. Access can never be a problem for this place. Overall it was a good experience. Probably it is the only place near my residence where I can find a Chinese Panda. My kid really lived watching them play but since it was crowded back then when I visited we could hardly stay and enjoy Panda’s activity, so little bit disappointed on that. Else, a good picnic spot to spend a day’s time. Food court is good. Zoo is divided into West and East sections. We especially loved the west section with lots of reptiles and other asia-pacific animals. I recommend this to visit on a cloudy day otherwise it will be really hard to walk through the zoo.

  • 4/5 Benjamin C. 4 years ago on Google
All-in-all it was a good zoo and a great experience (especially at ¥600). It's a good size but one can complete it writing 90 minutes, which is good so one can make multiple rounds or check back on previously inactive animals. The one thing keeping it from a 5 star experience is that many of the exhibits are just too small. They used vertical space well, but there were many cases where a cage could easily be expanded to allow the animals more space or let them hide if they want. Generally all the animals seemed healthy and happy but a few were getting stressed by the end of the day. Generally, though, it's a great way to spend the afternoon.

It is Japan's oldest zoo. It has a lot of animals from all over the world. I was able to see a giant panda here. There are other important animals in this zoo. The zoo is big and managed well. It is very different from zoos in other countries. A fun place to visit with kids.

The most popular zoo in the Tokyo area, and famous for it's panda enclosure. If possible, go on a weekday or off season for a stress free chance to see everything at your leisure. During weekends, national holidays and summer months it can be almost impossible to see the pandas due to very long lines. The size of the zoo and variety of animals is surprisingly expansive for being in the urban center of Tokyo. Minus one star because some animals enclosures are a bit small and lacking of foliage while others have vast expanses of space.

This is the famous Ueno Zoo?? I was quite unimpressed. Perhaps I visited at the wrong time if day, this zoo was more of a walk in a park than a zoo. We passed so many places where animals were ‘claimed’ to be, but empty spaces were found. Where the animals weee seen, they were in such tiny enclosures, that the overall feeling was of sadness rather than wonder. Generally speaking, this is a depressing place to visit. I am saddened that it even exists. I would prefer for there not to be a zoo here, than for these animals to live is such poor conditions. I do not recommend anyone pay to come to this place.

Its a great place to visit. Lot’s of animal and wuite big. A good experience for everyone from young to old. But sometimes when you look at the eye of the animals. They looks so sad and it feels so wrong. Specially the day i visited. It was a hot day. And the animals were rentless and really tired looking. It felt really bad looking at their eyes

Really huge place and lots of places to see animals if all sorts— great for all ages. Better on nicer days when it’s clear weather conditions to walk around and enjoy the unique spaces. Fun for the entire family and tourists alike!

I came here to see twin panda. But cannot see because lose the lottery. The place is very spacious but there are many places to rest. Enjoy it.

Well priced entry for the zoo, most enclosures were small and not well enriched for the larger animals, unfortunately due to covid and the current weather a majority of the smaller animal exhibits were closed. Wouldn't recommend visiting at the moment. I hope the zoo upgrades it's enclosures in the near future for the wellbeing of their animals.

There were a few restaurants offering shaved ice, finger snacks and lunch menu. There were lots of benches to take a break from all the walking! Our kiddos are a little too old to appreciate animal-seeing but they had lots of fun choosing their plushies: so many cute and fluffy ones to choose from. There were a few exhibits which we find interesting: Small Mammals Center, Amphibians House, Birds Aviary, different kinds of monkeys, flying foxes hanging upside side, a giant freshwater crocodile, polar bears, Panda, sun bears and brown bears 🐻‍❄️🐼🐻 , skulls comparison between the gorillas, humans and chimpanzees, skulls of different kinds of Tigers and the anatomy of elephants. It was not as sunny as expected due to the incoming typhoon No. 8. Weather was erratic with occasional showers but all in all, it's a good place to spend half a day.

For me, I think the biggest and most fun attraction aside from seeing the panda bears was the monkey mountain. The entire monkey society sits on their mountain and it's just so mesmerizing to watch them. I can watch them for many hours a day and the admission to the zoo is very cheap. It's a great way to spend a good afternoon having fun watching these Percy I highly recommend it.

It is an amazing place to visit. One must visit to see those incredible creatures we have in this world. How they look , behave, eat, stay etc. The place is very lively for children and for youngsters. You could see from animals to birds, reptiles to insects which are in the trend of getting extinction. From experience we couldn't see😞 panda as it has more fan following than any other animals or birds. I would recommend visiting such a day when the crowd would be less. If you visit on national holidays you will find a long queue for it, especially for pandas. So yeah, everything is lovely but yes you need to walk a lot to see domestic as well wild animals as they are kept in separate regions. Thank you🙏

One of the best zoos I’ve been to in a long time. The pandas are amazing, there was s small wait to see the younglings (around 20 min). All to keep people moving. The entry fee is an amazing value for what you are getting. Normally I’m not that long in zoos, for this one I spend a full afternoon.

It feels like the zoo is falling behind on maintenance, many exhibits were under maintenance. Construction was also scattered throughout. There's lots of exhibits from around the world that you expect from a big zoo, tigers, giraffe, gorilla, hippo, rhino, etc. I did want more japanese and other Eastern Asian animals as a tourist there's still a good amount. That being said the pandas put on a really good show for me and was the one animal at the zoo I really wanted to see! I'd still recommend this place and hope that it makes some improvements. The area it's in is really fun and a good tourist spot with surrounding museums as well.

Such a nice place to relax and bond with your family in the city. I have been here thrice already, and it's great to see that they have added another area which people can explore. Food is also available in the area as well as vending machines and several rest areas, so you won't have a problem when you get tired or hungry.

  • 4/5 Alon C. 9 months ago on Google
Nice zoo, good selection of animals which are kept in good condition. Signage could be better, especially for crossing between the two sections of the zoo. Feeding times are spread across the day, so even if you come 1 hour before closing you will still get to see some.

  • 5/5 Cristi 9 months ago on Google
The ticket is very cheap and for kids under 12 it is free, which is fantastic. The pandas have long queues. The park is pleasant to walk through and the animals are kept in good conditions. Many nocturnal places, very cool. The polar bear at 38 degrees or the line for the giant panda were not so cool. Close to transport and within the city.

  • 4/5 T H. 8 months ago on Google
Good to bring your kids to. Animals look a bit depressing but that’s probably a change in perception as a grown adult as opposed to an innocent child. They have all the usual animals (tigers, elephants, giraffes and the likes). Didnt see a lion unfortunately. The line for the baby pandas was huge and wasn’t worth the wait during Tokyo’s summer. On the other hand, there was no line for the parent pandas so that was nice. My daughter seemed to enjoy it a lot. Very affordable at 600yen per adult. Would recommend buying the tickets beforehand online.

Ueno Zoo is one of the oldest zoo in Tokyo, situated in heart of the city. Very easy to navigate to the zoo even from the train station. Easy access via trains and throughout the zoo many shops and vending machines to purchase any drinks or food. Unfortunately I would not agree on the conditions of the animals were kept in captive. Specially giraf , Rhainos were caged without giving them proper space of their natural habitats. Its was sad for me to see the panda in a glass cage n seems very depressed looking. Anyway, I assume this will be the irony of humanity but I have to admit kids love this place. Staff was super friendly.

Ueno Zoo offers an exciting opportunity to witness adorable pandas up close. The anticipation builds as you make your way through the diverse animal exhibits, eventually leading you to the charming panda enclosure. The pandas' playful antics and endearing behaviors captivate visitors of all ages, making it a highlight of the zoo experience. However, it's worth noting that due to its popularity, Ueno Zoo, especially the panda exhibit, can get crowded at times, which might require some patience. Overall, if you're a panda enthusiast or simply looking to enjoy a day surrounded by a variety of fascinating animals, Ueno Zoo is a delightful destination to explore.

The Ueno zoo is a beautiful establishment near the Ueno train station. It has lots of exotic and local animals. The best part of any Japanese zoo, in my opinion, is the squirrel exhibit. The price was about $5, but might be more now with tourism on the rise again. Be aware, it's beautiful but it is still a zoo; some of the animals, like the elephant, were alone in their enclosure which can be very upsetting if you're not aware of the reason (i.e. healing from injury or being slowly integrated into the zoo). Great place to visit if you're looking for a leisurely walk, some interesting animals to learn about, and want to keep near a busy area. I went by myself and saw the whole zoo in about two hours.

Amazing family plan for kids adults teenagers The zoo is a must see ! You can tell the animals are well taken care off and have good treatment From penguins to crocodiles to hippos For panda and polar bears and gorillas make sure you arrive there on time to queue as they close the lines at 3pm

  • 5/5 Danny R. 7 months ago on Google
Nice zoo with a good variety of animals. The pandas were super cute, but be ready to wait anywhere from 20-60 minutes to see them depending on the crowd. You get two minutes of viewing as well. The area around the zoo is a great place to just walk around.

  • 5/5 Caroline G. 7 months ago on Google
So unexpected to get such a lovely zoo in the middle of a city. Loved it so much me and my partner went back 2 days so we had proper time to walk around. The highlight was definitely the red pandas!

  • 1/5 Shalini S. 7 months ago on Google
Went there today & I was truly so saddened to see state of most animals. They looked absolutely sad & it was heartbreaking to see them in little enclosures. Scorching hot today & the temp was just too high for most animals. No more zoo visits for me for sure.

  • 5/5 Kyriacos C. 7 months ago on Google
Apart from the 33-degree heat and humidity, it was easy to get around and see all the animals. Lots of places to stop, refresh, get cold drinks and eat. Bins and bathrooms aplenty too. We did skip the Pandas at the end as it was 30 minutes wait. The heat was too much with my 10 year old.

  • 5/5 Benjamin S. 6 months ago on Google
Very cool maze like zoo with a ton of different exhibits. The park is large and has many things to offer for kids, adults and families. The gorillas were sadly unavailable but the other exhibits were still satisfying. Loved the elephants and giraffes. The food was fair priced.

  • 5/5 Christoph G. 6 months ago on Google
We enjoyed our stay here. It's quite big of a park and we liked the layout as well as the amount of plants and greens all around the place. The animals we saw all looked healthy. We saw one of the Pandas without queueing and skipped the baby panda as the queue looked too long for us.

  • 5/5 David R. 6 months ago on Google
Lots of beautiful habitats with very active animals. The polar bear was gorgeous and had multiple view points. You can easily spend 2-3 hours there contemplating all the majestic animals. Beware of long wait to watch the pandas. I recommend you go there as early as possible to avoid the 50 min wait line.

One of the best zoos I have been to, remarkably clean and massive. The ticket price (as a tourist) amounts to almost nothing when compared to zoos in UK. It has a massive selection of adorable animals - from big (panda, polar bear, elephants), mid size (owls, penguins), to small (prairie, Pallas cat) The zoo also has a couple of options to eat/dine - you can easily spend a whole day here

  • 5/5 Lumanti Maharjan Chitrakar (. 6 months ago on Google
Closing time is 5pm but last hours to get ticket is 4pm. We entered the zoom at 4pm and most of the animals like tiger, gorillas and twin baby panda were not in the cage due to cleaning time of the cage. 😞 But we walk around the Zoo area. Clean, calm and relaxing.

  • 5/5 Ben S. 6 months ago on Google
A jewel in the heart of Tokyo! Make sure to not spend all of your time queuing to see the pandas. (They are most always sleeping anyway.) There is much more to see! Get your ticket online to avoid the line. Or use the always deserted back ticket office and entrance.

I enjoy going to zoo and I dare say that I have a world class zoo back home so I had expectations and Ueno zoo met it with the variety of animals they have. Although the enclosures don’t look as natural like some places are, they allow us to take photos close up. I like how they try to allow everyone to enjoy the twin pandas by having a 1-min x 2 allocation for photo taking. It was being able to enjoy the zoo, night safari and bird paradise all for 600 yen!

  • 5/5 David H. 4 months ago on Google
Twin panda cubs, kangaroos, and a bunch of other animals I’ve never seen before. Get here early (20 min before opening) and buy your tickets in advance if you don’t want to wait for a while to see the pandas. But even so, it moves swiftly with Japanese efficiency.

  • 5/5 Neslie 4 months ago on Google
Visited on a weekday so the line was not that bad. But still people started coming before noon. The line for the Panda viewing was too long. So better line their first if you want to see it. Take your patience with you . Hehe I don’t find this zoo too big but it is good enough to see some animals.

  • 5/5 Jin H. 4 months ago on Google
Got a variety of animals and amenities, very chill without too much crowd. The waiting for panda viewing could be quite long, and it is definitely not worth it as they were just sleeping lying down, often far away. You might be lucky to see them active though.

  • 3/5 Edward T. 4 months ago on Google
Located just minutes from the Ueno Station. Reached slightly before opening and there is a queue but the queue clears quickly after about 10 minutes. The zoo is divided into 2 sections, linked by a bridge. The number of exhibits are adequate but could be more. Some exhibits are pitched dark and it makes it difficult to even see who is ahead let alone the exhibits, although the intention is to mimic the natural habitat. There are a number of eateries and the price is comparable to external ones. This is unlike many zoos where the pricing is exorbitant. Seating is also adequate even during meal times. The place is generally flat except for some slopes. Water dispensers are available near eateries for free. Recommend for at least 3-4 hours to visit all the exhibits. Young children will enjoy. Do note that there may not be animal shows as I did not see any. There is no need to book tickets in advance. Kids below a certain age is free. Closed on Mondays.
