Great food tour! Walking tour through the Shinjuku area, where you learn some history of the area as you get your bearings. Our guide Tatsuko spoke fluent English and was great fun, even starting the tour off with beers for the 4 of us! We did the Izakaya tour, and it did not disappoint, with a true Japanese food experience you wouldn't be able to do on your own. The food at every place was brilliant, with great drinks to match. Easy walking distance, and our guide dropped us off to the train station, and gave us plenty of tips and recommendations for the rest of our stay. Highly recommend!!

We booked the day before the event, and fortunately there was space for us. It was our first time in Tokyo, and we wanted to get a better overall sense of the food, parts of town, and culture--especially with us only being able to speak a few rudimentary words and phrases in Japanese. I'm so glad we got to do this, especially at the beginning of our stay in Tokyo. Oh, and they also let us know about a Nihonshu (sake) tasting happening a few hours earlier than the food tour, so we did that as well. Our guide, Taiga, was phenomenal. Knowledgeable, friendly, savvy, funny, completely welcoming. The Nihonshu tasting was super chill and fun. He'd reserved a cozy little Nihonshu joint that was opened just for us, and he led us through different styles, stories, ingredients, and brewing information. For the food tour, he walked us through a couple parts of Shinjuku, including the Golden Gai neighborhood, which is pretty magical. "How do the tiny theme bar owners feel when foreigners come in for a drink?" Well, you're gonna have to take the tour to find out. (But the answer was reassuring.) He led us to a number of different izakayas, where he'd prearranged visits for us to try a big variety of different foods and libations. These are the kinds of places you end up discovering over time as a local, and loving, and half not wanting to tell other people about because they're so special. Taiga was such a beautiful host, and just completely nailed the food choices. I'd do the exact same tour if we're ever in Tokyo again.

New to Japan and do not want failure for food? This food tour is highly recommended to get a true experience of excellent local food with bilingual local guides. All satisfied with the level of service of the tour in Tokyo.

BEST FOOD TOUR! What an amazing food tour while visiting on honeymoon. We received an email after booking about where to meet/what to expect (very clear with directions). We arrived around 9am and within a minute Yuma (guide) approached us warmly with perfect English. Yuma worked in Wisconsin finance so was just the right amount of authentic Japanese and laid back mid-westerner. He had just been to Brooklyn where we lived so we were keen to discuss the food scene there (and deep fried cheese/beer country Wisconsin). A mother arrived with her 2 kids under 12 from Hong Kong and the tour began. As the tour progressed we all became quite comfortable with one another and were sharing pictures/videos of our trips. Loved that the tour was kept small- great interaction and easier to get around the crowded market. Not only was Yuma wonderful to work with but he sent us an email afterwards with a list of recommendations when we go to Kyoto. He went above and beyond and I would recommend the tour to everyone. Great for all ages. Come hungry. The food/tour- the tour was broken up into 5 sections. 1. Outer Market - Yuma was very knowledgeable as the kids would point to a random fish and he would know it immediately and its traditional use. We then proceeded to try a bunch of bar snacks as Japan is known for an emphasis on salty/texture foods. These were the weirdest items that we tried - bonita flakes, calamari jerky, dried tiny whole fish with the bones marinated in teriyaki, dried black cod/black miso goma. 2. Outer Market Food - we ate a monster pork dumpling (delicious), egg tamago custard (palette cleanser) and had a traditional egg/chicken/rice dish that is nostalgic of home life in Japan. 3. Fruit and Vegetable Market - learned that fruit is traditional gift in Japanese culture so they are prized for their beauty/symmetry. The mangoes and cherries looked unreal! We sampled Moscato grapes and pure orange juice from Japanese oranges. 4. Inner Fish Market- HOLY TUNA! We discussed the history of the auction and work/costs involved. Yuma pointed out the oldest companies and discussed the structure of the family owned businesses. So impressed by the organized chaos of the Japanese fish mongers. 5. Tuna + Desert - If we weren't already full, the final leg of the tour was what most people sign up for - to taste the freshest TUNA! We had a large bowl of tuna with authentic wasabi and out of this world rice. After the tuna, we could choose between Matcha green tea, lattes or ice cream and took a nice sitting break where we could all talk/swap stories. The final food was desert- MOCHI! We chose based on Yuma’s recommendation his favorite- custard mochi with a strawberry on top. So Yummy!

Great tour outfit. Took the tour in Osaka...and the restaurant stops were great. Highly recommend this place. Some of the best tuna I have ever had in my life.

Did one in Kyoto, tour guide had amazing knowledge of local food places and food itself. Got to try more food in one night than you would normally get to try on your own. Highly recommended 😊😊

It was a great evening! Kanae's English was very good, and she was knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. She was accommodating to our interests and tastes. We had a nice variety of foods (some quite adventurous but all great to try) and sakes. We especially liked the sake bar and enjoyed getting to know the others on the tour.

Taiga is an excellent food tour guide. He took us to various places, we ate sushi, ice cream, sweat potatoe, bread, everything was very good. He is very nice and creates a nice atmosphere within the group. 100% recommend.

Great sake and food tour. Rie was great at enthusiastically explaining all the the different foods we tried and also several cultural things. The food and drink pairing were fantastic. Had a very good time!

We had a great food tour in the Shinjuku district in October. Our guide, Andrea, was very knowledgeable about both the history of the area and the food. We were part of a small group, and it was a very relaxed and fun evening where we were able to chat with both the rest of the group and Andrea. We were impressed with all the places we visited and the food was amazing and so was the sake. We left full and happy after having visited places we would never have found on our own. Only warm recommendations for Ninja Food Tours

The tour was worth every cent! It starts a little slow, which is good, and then it gets serious with the food. You will be satisfied—trust me—you will be at an 11 once you're done. The sashimi and Goyza are among my favorites. Order the Sake experience at the fish restaurant. We truly enjoyed our tour guide and her supervisor. She is from Japan but lived in San Jose/San Francisco, and we couldn't feel more lucky to have a tour guide who knew our hometown. The supervisor was also an interesting cat. He has a music background and doesn't mind sharing his life, which is interesting. Ask him if you get him; it won't disappoint. Overall, I appreciated their willingness to answer any questions about Japan or the local areas we visited and continuously check in on how full you are. I'm looking forward to trying out other tours with these two.

We did the Izakaya food tour, preceded by a Sake tasting. The sake tasting was delicious, but also informative and useful. While we do not yet know what sake styles we prefer, we learned enough to start tasting things and figuring out what we like. Joe was an awesome teacher, giving us enough of the history and technical information about sake that it was interesting without being overwhelming, and then focusing on more practical advice on buying it in restaurants and shops. After the tasting we went on the Izakaya food tour, again with Joe, and again he was an amazing guide. We tasted grilled meats (including chicken heart and liver), cheese omelette, pork and gyoza, paired with beer, sake and yuzu highball. Everything was very tasty and by the end we were stuffed. We also explored the red light district, and ended the tour with bar recommendations to continue our night. The tour gave us an awesome introduction to Izakaya, and we’ve since been able to explore other neighborhoods with confidence.

We loved our tour of the Tsukiji Fish Market! The guide, Rie, was very friendly and knowledgeable, as was the trainee who was with her - I feel really bad because I do not have the spelling of her name, but she was also really knowledgeable and nice! We learned about some of the history and traditions with the old fish market, and they picked some great spots for food. They also gave us recommendations for things to see and do on other days/parts of our trip based on the interests those in our group had. I’m so glad we booked this tour and ended up having them as guides!

Sato San just blew my mind! So sweet, so knowledgeable, patient, and prepared. Every detail was thought about from restroom stops, to hand wipes, to checking to make sure we were all ok. Chi was with us, too, and took photos for us and was very sweet. We took the Asakusa tour, and it was my favorite thing I did in Japan. I tried sushi for the e first time: as a long time flexitarian I had a bit of a fear of eating raw fish, but I'm so glad I tried it. We had: match tea, 6 big pieces of the freshest sushi, sake, 3 pieces of tempura with sauce, noodles, soup, and 3 specialty Japanese dessert including matcha ice cream. I think the amount of food we got, the quality of it, and the experience was an incredibly good deal. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

We had a fantastic food tour with Shino today in Asakusa. She was so kind and we ate some delicious foods we wouldn’t have tried on our own. The sushi was melt in your mouth delicious, we had delectable soba noodles and yummy deserts. I highly recommend Ninja food Tours. They were easy to communicate with, gave detailed directions, and professional. Ask for Shino. She was excellent.

I attended the Wagyu & Sake Tasting and although it was a lot of tasty food/drinks, the over all experience was a bit disappointing. I didn’t really leave with any more knowledge or tools then when I walked in and very minimal info about the two products offered. The youtube on their website said “we will teach you all the basics of sake you will need to know so you will leave feeling like a pro” it also mentioned “it will be a unique luxury dining experience”…that being said I felt like I was just another person in the bar and didn’t receive the attention one would expect, given you are probably paying more then the regular customers in the Izakaya to be there. He was very busy attending to other customers during the tasting. I think if I just visited the bar outside of the tasting experience, I might have enjoyed it more (Sake Bar Doron). If your looking to eat lots of meat and drink sake then you will probably enjoy it. If your looking for an educational luxury dining experience, then maybe not so much. Yuma and his staff were all extremely nice, but the atmosphere and experience was average compared to the way it was advertised. I wish I would have spent my last night in Tokyo perhaps doing something else 💔 I felt like the ultimate tourist for attending. Sounds like from the other reviews the walking tours might be a better option. Before booking I asked if they had a discount code or Black Friday sale going on, since I was booking on Black Friday but was fine without such discounts and understand the cost of meat can be high. The food was good, just wasn’t the experience I was wanting or expecting.

We did the Shinjuku Izakaya tour in November. Our guide Rie was amazing! She was super knowledgeable and friendly. We really enjoyed hanging out with her! Really appreciated her suggestions on other places to visit as well! All the food was super delicious. I highly suggest coming with an empty stomach as we were stuffed by the end of the night. We loved the yakitori, okonomiyaki and gyoza! Rie also ordered Natto Omelet for us which is something I would never think of ordering so I appreciate the adventure! Lastly she recommended yuzu ice cream to end the night since we couldn't fit another plat of gyoza and it turned out to be a highlight! We craved it the entire trip after. One of the best nights we spent in Japan!

We did the Izakaya Tour in Shinjuku, with sake tasting add-on. Both sake and food guides spoke great English and gave us lots of cultural background on Japan. The sake was excellent and copious, as was the food! Tried a few dishes we wouldn't have know to try (which was exactly what we wanted), plus got oriented to other sites in the Shinjuku area. We loved the experience so much, we booked another tour in Osaka. Thanks!

This was the best! We started with the Sake tasting tried a wide variety and learned so much about the sake making process and the different kinds of sake. Thanks to Rie, I am walking away feeling so much more knowledgeable. After that we had an amazing and diverse food experience on and off the beaten path of shinjuku. We had: Sashimi, monkfish liver, tuna kagare, really interesting creamy crab croquettes, okonomiaki three different ways from another, juicy pork katsu, and finally giyosa and yuzu sorbet. 🤤🤤🤤 Both guides were passionate and energetic and they even shared wonderful recommendations for Kyoto and Osaka that we cannot wait to try!

We did the sake and wagyu food pairing in Tokyo and our guide was the most genuinely funny, kind, helpful, and inviting person! The food was amazing and the sake was some of the best I have ever had. We learned so much and laughed and had a great time together! Highly recommend.

We had the Wagyu and Sake tasting dinner. The tasting was very well organized and there were multiple hosts who all spoke English (the dinner could have been done in Japanese, English or French!). Learned about Wagyu and Sake in a casual setting. The beef was very rich and tasty. The restaurant was a little small but was fine. The hosts were super nice. They gave us tips about the city and where to go and eat. Overall a wonderful experience to try Wagyu beef many different ways.

Sato was our guide and learned lots about Tokyo from history of changes since WW2 in Shinjuku. We had a variety of delicious food starting from a piece of BBQ pork cutlet. This was followed by okonomiyaki, fresh caught sashimi and the best gyoza I’ve had so far. We had a few drinks including Sake and Yuzu. Then a Yuzu based dessert to end it all. Overall we had a great night with good people and toured around parts of Tokyo we may not have otherwise (depending where your hotel is). Overall would definitely recommend if staying any length of time in Tokyo.

We had a great night with Chi doing the Tokyo Izakaya food tour. She was super informative, fun, lovely & made sure we definitely had full stomachs by the end of the night 😂 she even helped out with other area’s & restaurants to try while we are in Tokyo. I would 100% recommend people to give this tour a go!

I was in Japan for the first 4 days of my trip by myself and so I thought that I would try and get out and meet some people. I signed up for the tour and got Amanda as a tour guide. She is so nice and personable that it made the night even better. It felt like we were all being shown around by someone that not only knows the area intimately but was also a new friend. The areas we saw were beautiful and Amanda did such a great job of educating us that I used my new info to show my friends around the same areas once they landed in Japan. This tour is worth every dollar (yen) and more, give them a chance to make your trip to Japan even more memorable.

Had a spectacular tour with Yuma exploring restaurants we never would have found, as well as some super interesting parts of Shinjuku. Great food, good company and a fun way to learn about a new city. His follow up with recommendations on Kyoto was super helpful!

Yuma was a great guide through the wholesale fish market and outer market (street food). The tour is well-timed and orchestrated and you get a good sense of the fish market and the new market. The food stalls at which you stop are excellent and there is little to no waiting. Our guide was friendly and warm and helpful at answering questions. It’s one of the few tours that gets you into a cool part of Tokyo that you otherwise couldn’t access as a tourist. As friendly and earnestly oblivious Canadians, this tour was a welcome way introduce ourselves to Tokyo. Great food, great guide, well paced and well worth it. They also provided several restaurant recommendations afterwards which were lovely. As an aside - our guide was excruciatingly patient and gracious when dealing with another (very) crass and rude group member.

Really super food tour, you get to see the right highlights and taste some delicious food - you will be full! Amanda was a sensational guide. We also loved the sake tasting with Yuma before too, he made it really interesting, had a little quiz in it which kept your thinking as you tried the sake and you can tell he has passion for it.

Fabulous tour. I did the Izakaya tour in Shinjuku and our tour guide Ai was great and so knowledgeable about the food and helped us with our questions on Japanese culture, and took us to some really great places. I would so highly recommend this tour. Abs the tour company re-arranged some guests so we had three solo female travellers together in the same group. Such good service. Thank you!

Great experience joining the Kyoto food tour! We got to try out food and restaurants that we would have otherwise missed if we had explored on our own. Food selection was good and suits all palates 👍🏻👍🏻

We had a great time with our tour guides. They speak very good English and were very personable. We had great conversations and they even gave us good recommendations for other restaurants and shopping malls. The food was great too and also took us on a tour of shinjuku red district. When we were late and missed the meet up time, they were kind enough to let us meet them at the first restaurant location. We definitely had a wonderful time.

So glad I did this tour my first full day in Shinjuku. I stayed in Shinjuku so i wanted to get familiar with the area. My guide was Nathan and he was originally from the states. He did an amazing job with showing us around and discovering places we would have never found on our own. He gave us practical tips for the other plans we had on Japan and how to get there or where to eat and answered our questions. Then the food! Again so impressed with the selection and variety. I tried things I would have never tried and at places I would have never known to try. We tried over 10 small dishes with 2 full drinks.

Tour was a great experience eating traditional local ‘tapas’ in several places in the nightlife area of Shinjuku. Our tour guide Giulia was very informative and made the evening lots of fun... bonus that she was also a sake sommelier!

If you are coming to Tokyo for your first time, get on this tour before you do anything. We had Nathan as our guide, he was full of knowledge and gave us awesome tips that would have been useful from the start of our trip. The food was delicious and we got to see parts of the area that we would never have found otherwise.

Asakusa Food Hunt & Tokyo Retro Bites tours were both excellent & a chance to eat like a local. The Asakusa tour, you sample a huge range of foods, from sushi to buckwheat noodles to glazed potatos. The Retro tour was superb, you get to experience old Tokyo with a more chilled out vibe. Perfect for foodies & confident travellers.

Amazing Food Tour in Shinjuku. We visited 6 different locations each specializing in a different food item. We also had 2 drinks that were included in the tour plus you can order whatever else you want at each place. Our tour guide paid for the additional drinks and then we just paid him at the end of the tour. Each tour will be different depending on your preferences you list when booking the tour and on the day of the tour. Every place we went to was a great local place, we were the only tourists at each of them. The food was absolutely delicious, and there was more food then our tour could eat, especially at the last seafood restaurant. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tokyo. After the tour, our guide emailed us with the list of all the places we visited, tips for other locations, and pictures that were taken during the tour.

I took the virtual tour of the Tsukiji Retail Market via Amazon Experiences. The tour guide Vanessa was knowledgeable and fun to chat with. Until we can actually travel internationally again it's nice to have these virtual online tours as an option to still be able to explore parts of Tokyo and talk with someone local.

Fantastic tour with Yuma and Ninja Food Tours. Great food, local knowledge and hospitality. It was fantastic to experience local spots and ask Yuma a myriad of questions. The tour was customized based on our desires and since we had a 7 yr old with us they even made it family friendly. We were on Izakaya tour Nov 2021.

A must-try! We tried various Japanese food around the Shinjuku area across different izakayas. It was a walking tour and all locations were near each other. We had the recommended sake and refreshing local cocktails with our dinners. Tour guide Hawaii Joe was the best tour guide we’ve experienced so far! He’s fun and full of trivia. He’s very considerate too, as he accommodated our dietary restrictions. So worth it.
