Not a building, museum, or park, New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park is a district of the city, that includes all of those things and much more. For most people it's a destination for history, arts, food, and entertainment, for many it's a place to work, and for some it's home. Everyone is welcome. You'll be enchanted by the streets, buildings, art, music, cuisine, and people. Old coexists with new, townies and tourists. Don't ask about the namesake, the magnificent creatures. We really shouldn't have killed all those whales, but today we strive for redemption. This place is now gifted with vibrancy, grit, beauty, and hope. 'Love to see you!

A great place to visit when you're in the area. The best collection of scrimshaws that we have ever seen. You can spend hours in this one museum. It's well worth the price of admission!

Loved it. Wish I had more time to spend but they were closing. Need to allow more time next time I visit. Had a great time with my grandson very educational for the both of us. I like looking back into the. And what was living like back in the early to mid 1800.

As for nautical exploration and aspirations, this is the place to see. Learn so much about whales and whaling life. The staff was very courteous and friendly. It was they who suggested watching the whaling film and we weren't disappointed. The town retains much of its 1700s charm and I do encourage everyone to come here at least once in your lifetime.

3D movie about whales is so engaging. Great exhibitions about whaling and its impact on the American economy. Excellent scrimshaw exhibit and amazing objects including whale skeletons. Great for all ages and physical abilities.

The museum was well worth our time and entry fee. So much more than we expected. Plan to spend 2 or 3 hours to really absorb all the details. It was Amazing. Would highly recommend.

This review is specific to the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park Visitor Center, not the park as a whole. The visitor center is quite similar to a small scale museum. Very educational. New Bedford was not just a Whaling center but also for the abolishment of slavery in the United States.

Brilliant museum designed with fun learning in mind. We were not sure what to expect and we loved it! The scavenger hunt for whales was fun too. Lovely docents & staff.

Very informative and wonderful displays. Also interactive to keep kids engaged (some rooms are better than others). Check their website for discounts before you go.

It was fascinating to learn about the whales anatomy. I also feel deep reverence for the whales. In a way it was like visiting a holocaust museum. I highly recommend visiting!

This is a must see! Both kids and adults will be fascinated by the areas whaling history and how whaling shaped our modern world. Did you know that the blue whale is the largest animal to ever live on this planet... bigger than any dinosaur.

Amazing galleries. Actual whale skeletons (with explanations of how they came to be at the museum) and detailed anthropology of local culture. The skrimshaw gallery was my favorite. Next to standing under a blue whale skeleton.

Great museum to learn about an incredible history of New Bedford. The large skeletons of whales are eye catching for little ones. We enjoyed the spectrum of exhibits from the replica of a ship to the incredible modern art. Could come back many times to absorb the different pieces. I’d recommend coming for a few hours and then enjoying one of the many choices for food downtown. Where comfortable shoes as the historic cobblestone streets can catch you off guard.

It was exciting. We love New Bedford for it's historical downtown to it's restaurants and beautiful old homes. My daughter lives there with her children and husband. It's a family vacation spot. 🙂

Very interesting and fun for the kids. They have a scavenger hunt for the kids to find the different shakes hidden throughout the museum. Lots of fun for them as they learn about how whales were hunted.

Very interesting, far more than I had expected . It truly gives you a sense of the life. Including the full size replica whaling ship inside the museum.

Absolute jem of a museum. Took a tour and highly recommend doing this. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and seemed to be having as much fun as us. If you're interested in history, this is a necessary visit. Will be coming back!

So much unexpected awesomeness! The whaling is just a part... There's also the industrial history, the labor actions, the Portuguese community, the paintings, the jaw-dropping scrimshaw collection...

Great place to visit. Lots of interesting artifacts and history. Bring your kids but don't expect to be able to read as much of the info if you do. Lol

This museum has a lot to offer for its viewers. It's gallery hosts a large collection of whaling related information and artwork. There are life sized whale models, as well as a miniature whaling boat. One of the museum hosts was a Captain in the past and he was kind enough to explain to us a lot of information. Has Japanese, Azorean, and many more whaling related pieces. As well as a section dedicated to slave labor and African American and Native contributions.
