We had the worst experience staying at this hotel! I would not recommend it to anybody as their staff service is worst than a motel. We paid $500 for 2 nights that is way expensive than any 3-4 stars hotel considering that we will also get good service from the staff for the price that we paid but that was not the case. We asked for microwave and they told us we will be charged $25 for it, first of all which good hotel charges for microwave. We were ready to pay for it at the end but turned out they did not even have one in their inventory! We asked for extra comforter as I was feeling too cold and their thermostat was also not working to set the temperature, they did not give extra comforter as well. We kept waiting but staff did not provide anything. The phone was also not working from room so every time for any room service we had to go all the way down ourselves. Worst place to stay , please do not waste your money here as we already wasted ours!

Pros Very convenient location that's close to a lot of attractions Staff was nice Cons Pool was out of order The water cooler had dirt in it The water fountains shot water outside the fountain and got all over me There was food whole biscuits on the ground near fountain There was food and dirty dishes in the hall that stunk They computed and told me the room was one price one I got there they charged me 130$ more then that. Bad customer service to deal with issues When they said they were sorry and would look in to it. I sent them the information requested and followed up 3 different times over 3 weeks. I still have not got any response. I would definitely not recommend this hotel. The room was nice there was a lot of dust in places. Other then that it was nice.

We were traveling from out of town and stayed here for a night. Room was very big and spacious. No complaints except that room service did not come unless I requested a clean. Also I stepped on a pin needle?! I let the cleaning room service know and she saw it her self. She plainly said we clean the carpet when we vacuum but we don’t always guarantee that everything comes up! They are so lucky my 5 year old or crawling 11 month old did not get stuck with it….or else there would be a lawsuit pending! Manager was nice to offer us free breakfast but unfortunately our flight was leaving at 3am and couldn’t accept his offer. Management was suppose to get back with us about the incident and still haven’t heard back. I would not recommend this hotel not very professional at all.

November 2023 5* My 4th visit to Newark but first stay at Heldrich. The hotel is located at centre place so you can walk the Main Street. The location is amazing. Rooms are nice and spacious. Beds are comfortable and interior is not very old. Washroom is clean and nicely maintained. You will not find any stain. There is swimming pool in the hotel but it was under maintenance. Check out the deal on the website as there was offer of one night free with 2 nights. You need to book online to avail this offer. The only feedback is that reservation staff can be more courteous and helpful. They were fine but you always look for extra.

Any service to your room is by request only, which is fine. However, nobody actually performs those requests, even though they do sign the log book. It's very clear nobody has been to my room in two weeks. Christopher's Restaurant is also completely unreliable for the breakfast buffet (no employees have showed up for the last two days).

I spoke to the manager about some concerns I had about parking, he giggled at me and said they don’t have parking, that’s another company, but they reside in the hotel lobby. Then he turned around and walked away when I said I didn’t find it funny I am sooooo disappointed! That said, the valet team are nice guys and this review is not their fault! Throughout my stay I also realized that the internet is horrible, be prepared to tether your computer if you need to work, don’t bother calling down to the front desk, they do not care!

This was a very disappointing and frustrating experience. The room was ok, but several spots were not cleaned well (especially the bathtub, where there was a lot of hair from previous guests). But my main problem was the rude and unprofessional behavior of the front desk staff. We had booked a room with two beds, but we were given a room with only one bed. I understand that mistakes can happen, and it's not a big deal. However, considering the price category of this hotel, I expected a more professional and friendly response to such a situation, like giving us the room we had booked or at least apologizing for the mistake. However, when I kindly and calmly informed the front desk clerk that the room we received was not the one we had booked, his immediate response was nothing but rude and disrespectful. He didn't even check the system and tried to convince me that I must have made a mistake in my booking and not reserved a room with two beds. Only after showing him the reservation confirmation did he finally check the system and confirm that I had indeed booked a room with two beds. Nevertheless, instead of offering an apology, he simply stated that there were no rooms with two beds available anymore and that there was nothing he could do. If there had been even the slightest apology for the hotel's mistake, I would have completely understood, and it wouldn't have been a problem. However, the way the front desk staff handled this situation was completely unprofessional and made the whole experience frustrating and disappointing. Also, after reading other reviews online, it seems that many other people had similar issues and complaints about the front desk staff's behavior, so I can definitely not recommend The Heldrich hotel and won't stay here again.

Staff was ok, but the fact that the manager wouldn’t do a full refund for my stay of about 20 minutes gives the heldrich one star. The lady that booked my room over the phone was super nice and promised great view and big windows. My room had standard size windows with view of a parking deck and a block of new st. Also, don’t ask the front desk for things, it’s most of the times above their pay grade…

Stayed for one night and can definitely say it is not a 4* star hotel. It is a very expensive 2* star hotel for ~$200. The rooms (generalizing here) are old. The rooms are luxury modern if this was 2005. The staff experience was nice for us but we had very minimal interaction with them. The valet parking is $30 for 24 hrs and multi-entry. Location is nice in the midst of Rutgers campus with good restaurants nearby. But you can find more modern stays for less money.

This was the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. I called for a week before my stay trying to get an early check in, no one could give me a straight answer and kept telling me to call back. The date of our stay the entire computer systems were down!! We could not check in at all! We were getting married at 4pm, they wouldn’t even allow me a hospitality room to change. There were also two wedding parties there and no one could check into their rooms- what an nightmare. We come back after our dinner only to find out that they CANCELLED our reservation. So I was left scrambling to find a hotel room at 8pm. DO NOT STAY HERE!

No parking on premise is a huge problem. You need to publicly park and walk through the city to get on the property. Then, you need to pay by the day or hour for the parking and The Heldrich does not comp the parking bill for its customers. Or, you're forced to pay $30 a DAY to valet your car. It's not right. If you're a paying for a stay the parking needs to be at least discounted.

Checked into a room that had a broken AC. That's ok, I know it happens. Went to the front desk and asked them to fix it. Left the room until the evening and took my suitcase with me. I did however leave my airpods pro on the bed, because I didn't need them. Upon returning to the room the AC was working and headphones were missing. I tracked them and saw they checked in the room after I was gone and then they moved to a different address about 10 minutes from the hotel. Most likely the maintenance people thought I checked out and forgot the headphones in the room. I wrote to the hotel the same day with all the details, time stamps etc... It's been couple of weeks and they just ignored me. This is really not how you handle such situation, especially if you are a 4 star hotel. I wasn't even accusing them or their staff of stealing, but rather thought it's a unfortunate misunderstanding. Now I'm not so sure and maybe I'm not the first person reporting this and they just don't want to deal with it, hoping it will just go away if you ignore it long enough

Dont go here. The hotel was filthy and smelled of mold couldbt even stay more than 20 minutes. Left them an email requesting a refund with pictures they declined. Go somewhere else. I'll post email: I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to express my deep disappointment with the recent experience my wife and I had at your hotel. Unfortunately, the conditions of the room were far from satisfactory, and we were left with no choice but to seek alternative accommodation elsewhere, as we only spent less than 20 minutes in the room before leaving. Upon entering the room, we were greeted by an immediate stench that was both unpleasant and overwhelming. To make matters worse, my wife started sneezing uncontrollably due to the excessive amount of dust present in the room. The room also had a distinct smell of mold, which poses health risks. The excessive humidity in the room only exacerbated this issue, making it an uncomfortable environment overall. Furthermore, there were visible stains on the furniture and walls, which added to our discomfort. Given these circumstances, we made the difficult decision to book another hotel immediately in order to salvage our trip. We believe that such conditions are unacceptable and do not meet the standards that one would expect from a reputable establishment like yours. In light of this unfortunate experience, I kindly request a full refund for our stay at your hotel. It is only fair that we receive compensation for the unsatisfactory conditions we encounter. I trust that you will understand our position and respond promptly. Please let me know how you intend to address this matter within a reasonable time. Your cooperation in resolving this issue amicably will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Best Regards

We booked this hotel last minute because it had a pool for our littles to swim in. When we showed up they announced their pool was closed, and had been for weeks due to maintenance issues. They claimed to try and give us a more special room, I think it had a nice view of the downtown area, so I assume that was the upgrade. We had asked for a crib and more towels on separate occasions and they were never brought to us unless we called a few times. The room only came with 2 towels, though we had 4 individuals. I received them the last time from front desk receptionist and she was nice as could be. While she was very helpful, others were not. Unfortunately I misplaced my $200 sunglasses and searched high and low for them. Once we left town about an hour in to the trip it occurred to me that I had left them in the hotel lobby women's bathroom. I called and asked if they could go locate them for me. The guy said they were busy and would call me back. They never did. I emailed them, no response. So now I am out $200 sunglasses. Sadly, this stay was a disappointment. We could have stayed somewhere with a pool and much more for the extra $200 I lost on my sunglasses. But indeed it's a nice location for the town.

The rooms do not have proper ventilation. The hotel has a lot of humidity. The hotel doesn't offer self laundry services only send out. It is a good location to walk to tons of different places to eat. All the places I tried was very good. The staff are friendly and helpful.

This place is OK. That's all. It has a beautiful lobby and it's an old building witch looks cool. But it's not the luxury hotel it's making itself out to be. I paid extra for a luxury king room. No microwave. Old and dated. Beds are very comfy and fridge was small. Staff at front desk wasn't very nice and parking is a nightmare. Garage is across the street and not included in room price. It's 30 bucks a day. The neighborhood is great though. Tons of restaurants and bars in area. Will not return unless seeing a show

My actual stay was fine (room was a little beat up but clean). My issue has been with handling of an item I accidentally left in the closet. I’ve called numerous times since the day after I checked out, left messages with manager, and have yet to find out where my dress is. No one will just check with housekeeping and tell me if it was found or stolen. I travel a great deal and have never had an experience like this with a hotel!

Make sure to use HoteITully.ᴄᴏm when booking your resort. This site will compare hundreds of booking web sites and typically will have prices much cheaper compared to others! Thank me later! This place is one of the best in the area. I have been staying here for a long time. If you stay for a few days you for sure will love it I'm sure! Been staying here for at least a decade, one of the best place to stay overall in the area. Pet friendly, rooms are clean and larger than you would expect!!

Worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. Hotel is dirty and dining room closed. Their website is very misleading about what is available with your stay. Manager not around to complain to. We stayed 4 nights @ $250 a night. Definitely not worth it. It’s been 3 weeks since I called in for the manager and still never got back to me. I would definitely stay somewhere else.

Rooms are clean and so is the lobby and hotel overall. I've stayed at a number of hotels in the area and the Heldrich is one of the nicest. One of the great things about this hotel is it's surrounded by a lot of restaurants. You can literally walk across the street and be at a number of fine dining restaurants within 40 feet of the hotel doors. It simply makes life easier if you are visiting in the area. Hotel management is very nice and accommodating as well.

The Heldrich Hotel advertises itself as an upscale hotel with luxury rooms. I'd rate it as a two star hotel. we arrived around 2pm and were told that no rooms were available until 4pm. The restaurant was closed so I decided to sit in the lobby to get some work done. They do not offer free wifi in the lobby. So I asked for the password since I had reservations and was told that I wouldn't be able to login without a room number. Isn't this hotel supposed to be for business travelers? Finally I was able to check in and when I got to the room it was clean but the dresser was all broken and the towel rack in the bathroom was missing and there is no microwave in the room. Also, their pool was closed supposedly due to COVID. Other than that the stay was fine but I won't be going back.

Pretty hotel. It was not busy when we stayed.our room was neat and clean. Bathroom good... could use some update. But ok for an average mid range hotel. Hotel description starts they have a restaurant and bar that serves food. Restaurant was only open for private events and bar had no food. I wouldn't have chosen this facility.

Staff is friendly and the lobby/bar seem very nice. The rooms themselves, though, leave a lot to be desired. The amenities are what I'd expect from a MUCH cheaper hotel. There is nothing about the rooms that feel luxury or deserve the $300 a night price tag. The walls are extremely thin so you will hear every single tiny noise from your neighbors. The location is primo, as the hotel is a very short walk from plenty of bars, restaurants, and theaters. There is no on site parking so you'll either have to pay for valet parking or park in a city garage yourself.

The carpeting in the room... Pretty sticky and gross. Shoes only when in these rooms. That aside, pretty standard worn down hotel. Staff are satisfactory, so the main reason you'll stay is for work, sleep, then get out. For New Brunswick, there are few options as well located, so win for this hotel (and walkable to lots of bars and restaurant). If you have a car, you could easily expand your options within 10 miles any direction.

Surprised by some of the negative reviews. We stayed here when we were in town for a show at the State Theatre, and our experience was good. The front desk staff were very attentive in handling special requests, and the location and view were great!

Hmm where should I start… Tub was clogged Hard pillows Hair dryer broke down Dusty bathroom sink Found a dirty towel in the middle on my room Elevator had old vomit Gentleman on Night Shift was rude when I asked for a pillow (I’m still waiting for it) and to be transfer to a different room. I travel for business ever month and have to stay in New Brunswick. The hotel is in a great location and only a mile from where work but I won’t be coming back to this hotel.

Beautiful hotel but for such a high end hotel there was no room service. There is a decent restaurant in the hotel though. Also the valet lost keys to another vehicle while we were there. Luckily it wasn’t our keys but that seems unprofessional. Lovely views of New Brunswick and lots of stuff in walking distance.

Make sure to use Hoᴛᴇʟʙoʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏm when booking your resort. This web site will compare hundreds of booking websites and typically will have rates much cheaper compared to others! Thank me later! This hotel is one of my favorites in the area. I've been coming here for years. If you decide to stay here you for sure won't regret it. Excellent! Food is prepared fresh, you can tell there is an attention to the quality and freshness of ingredients. Everything was cooked perfectly. While visiting from out of town this is my breakfast jaunt. The staff is so fast that you wait or want for nothing. BTW, great prices.

We love this hotel. Stayed here a couple of times now. The suites have nice layouts, and are spacious and clean with lovely views. We only wish the hotel had some sort of membership or rewards program for repeat guests. We would highly recommend this hotel.

customer service was not important at all. Absolutely scarce on amenities. First time I received an answer of "no" on a regular basis. If all you want is a place to sleep and little to nothing else regarding comfort and daily needs. Then maybe this is the place for you.

  • 4/5 Cynthia B. 1 year ago on Google
The Heldrich was nice, especially its proximity to the State Theater, although it was a bit pricey. I imagine the price has much to do with the location. Service was very good as well, however, it would be nice if they updated the rooms and the furniture a bit. It would also help if there were microwave ovens in the room. Overall, it was a good visit. I would visit again if needed.

Went in the room not clean someone's stuff is in the room and doors tables are dirty, furniture look worn-out and worn down.carpet is not vacuumed either pool is being renovated and they don't advertise that at all!!!! And the third party say free breakfast lies. No free parking either!!!!

The hotel may be a classic, but it has all required modern amenities. Also it is in the heart of New Brunswick downtown so it's easy for you to either get to Rutgers University or to enjoy the night life.

Old TVs don't allow you to watch your streaming services. We watched a movie on my 13 inch laptop. Not a 4-star hotel experience. At least, they could provide us adapters to connect our laptops to the HDMI cable. I asked, they don't. Pool has been out of service for over 2 weeks. Not a 4-star hotel. The light is not connected to an established light, so on entry the switch doesn't work unless you figure out which lamp it controls and turn that on. The TV remote didn't turn the TV on. The power button on the TV didn't work either. Love the beds and overall vibe of the place! I hope they fix these things. But $170 a night? No. Maybe $100.

Best location if you're attending a performance at the Performance Center or the State Theater. Great restaurants within a short walking distance( have reviewed my finds). Staff friendly and welcoming. If arriving via train, it's an easy 10 minute walk.

The price was affordable and the location was convenient. We booked about 24 hours before our stay and I called to confirm we could check in very late. Alba both answered my call, assisted me by phone and helped us check in the next evening. She made the process a breeze!! Great customer service.
