This was a great find along the way when we decided to take the ferry across the water. Definitely worth the detour. Plenty of history and helps share the history so we can remember and learn from our past.

The trail is an enjoyable loop that goes around the historic fort with beautiful scenery and cool artifacts. Surprised on how big the for actually was. They are doing a lot of construction there so it should be even better in the future!

Live oaks, a historic fort with a boardwalk. Waves crashing on rocks, sandy beach, picnic tables, and a wonderful trail to WWII bunker a famous hermit lived in, loads of sea birds. Park and explore the whole area on foot. Decent rest room.

One of my favorite Forts to visit. Is it so close to the beach as well - it’s easy and fun to make a day of it. Rich in history, beautiful trail, well maintained. We come here over and over every year.

A huge piece of history displayed within a museum. Very clean establishment, great for a homeschool group, and the staff is very informative. With the growing population I think this would be a great place for newcomers to visit.

What a spectacular location steeped in history! The beauty of the raw outdoors! There was ample signage to understand the history of the location! The place is sprawling, and serene! Definitely worth a visit when you are in Wilmington! We did not go to the beach, but there is a really beautiful beach across the street from the historic site! If you're looking for a beautiful walk, and an opportunity to walk in peace under the shade of beautiful trees, this is the place to be! The ocean on one side, and the wet lands on the other. We did visit the visitor center. It's a small beautiful location with lots of artifacts.

We recently moved to the area and we love the ocean/water. My husband also loves to off road and explore. We bought an annual pass for Fort Fisher and are still steadily going in December because it’s just so beautiful. Just load up the truck and spend the day hanging out and listening to the water while the kids (and puppy) dig and explore. It’s one of my happy places.

Beautiful place! Lots of interesting info to read inside and the "ghost" they have walking around as another source of information is fun! If you have time to drive down to the Buchanan battery, there's a fun memory mailbox on top of the mound along with a cool tree!

Really cool walk thru outdoor exhibit with lots of tangible historical perspectives. The indoor portion is really well done and very educational. Really impressive for a free, not for profit museum. It's a must-do experience if you're in the area.

We were waiting for our ticket time at the aquarium. This area was right before you turn into the aquarium and you climb down some rocks! Highly recommend stopping! The beach was beautiful! Tons of unique sea shells!

Seeing a part of North Carolina's military history preserved and protected for generations to come made the trip to Fort Fisher worth every mile. So much to see and so little time, but I do plan on returning and learning more about this remarkable place.

Museum is very interesting. If you have difficulty walking, parking was a bit far from museum because of construction. Staff was very nice and helpful.

I think this area is special. The surrounding trees are fantastic. Great area for photo shoots. You have so much scenery in a small area. Sand, rocks, trees, waves, etc ... I love that there is a sidewalk to view the beach. There are a couple gazebos. There are bathrooms at the museum that are open til 4:45p. I really love the ocean breeze there.

First time visiting this Fort and boy, was i impressed by its history and the story boards of the soldiers experiences laid out on the trail. Inside the museum they had incredible dioramas depicting the battles and such. Highly recommend adding this, and the whole Wilmington, NC area, to your bucket list.

An piece of American history. Wonderful little museum, and the grounds are well worth raising the heat to explore. The Gillette family connection is also remarkable, and who knew Tiffany made sabers?

Admission is free and there are many exhibits to see that contain relics found on the site and around the area which I never get tired of seeing. I've been coming here since I was a kid when my dad brought me here and walked the grounds with me explaining the battles that took place and lives that were lost. I will never forget those memories and I brought my kids here and told them the same stories as they had been told to me. Be sure to support the site with either a donation or gift shop purchases. They have some neat maps of the area including one of all the ship wrecks in the area which I bought and framed. Well worth a visit.

This is truly a remarkable place, so much has been preserved when it comes to artifacts that it amazed me. The staff are super friendly and full of knowledge! Never hesitate to ask them a question no matter what it is. Not to forget, the scenery in the area.......truly something that calms the soul.I love my National and State Parks!! "Psssst.....there is a Ferry down the street I highly recommend. (It takes you from North Port NC to South Port SC, about a 25 minute tour across the water)"

My family went on vacation in that area. We had a wonderful time & enjoyed the history information & pictures. The walking trail was very nice too. I'm handicap & have to use a cane due to mobility issues. The walk was enjoyable & had a trail that was flat enough to walk. There were benches throughout the area for me to sir down & catch my breath & rest my legs. This is a wonderful place for all ages & different physical strength & weaknesses.

Fort Fisher is located at the end of Kure Beach, just a short drive outside of Wrightsville. Fort Fisher has many different opportunities to give out. There are gorgeous trees where you can hammock with a view of the ocean. You can walk around the old battlegrounds. You can fish and walk along the water. Or you can even walk to a completely isolated island across the shore, which you can walk along rocks to when it is low tide.

  • 4/5 Ryan J. 3 years ago on Google
This was a very impressive place...was surprised to see that is was only a state historic site rather than a national one. This site was actually better than some national historic sites. Visitor Center was also nice with a lot of history in it...plus the staff was very friendly. Only knock would be that it would have been cool to actually go inside the Fort.

Nice park along the shore, there is a short paved trail for easy access, some interesting history plaques to read and enjoy, there are trees to provide shelter as well as the dunes design gave us some protection from the north Easterly wind. A good place for a picnic with the kids or a quiet morning walk.
