Lovely experience, amazing art by Vasily Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois. The exquisite exhibitions were quite remarkable. Since setting my naked eye upon the superb artistic production, I have been dearly astonished in the most splendid of ways. Twas' quite the experience, one in which I shall never wish upon forgetting. I hope my dear fellows reading this venture upon into this superlative establishment. I wish thee who is reading this have a fine evening. Sincerely, Local Guide

I'm in love with the new wing of the NSW Art Gallery. It's spacious and bright, with lovely views to the outdoors, exciting visiting exhibitions and a great gift shop. I think you love it (me!) because it's beautiful to walk around in, or you hate it (heaps of other people) because it feels like it's a bit empty and doesn't have the 'super famous, classic' art. 🎨 Well, it's free to visit, so it's really no big deal if you go, decide it's not for you, and then leave. If you're a tourist visiting Sydney, it's super easy to pop by on your way to the Royal Botanic Gardens or Mrs. Macquarie's Chair. It's very accessible and a nice opportunity to see Australian art. The more 'classic' work is in the old building. Have a browse, have fun.

An outstanding gallery, truly the mainstay of Sydney’s art scene. The remodelling of their classic rooms is a must see once fully reopened, and the Archibald always attracts significant talent and some truly breathtaking portraits. Also don’t sleep on the free exhibits downstairs - oftentimes there are some understated and lesser-known (read: not mainstream enough for the average/passive consumers of art) artists displaying real killer stuff.

Stunning buildings inside and outside, masterfully curated collections that span many genres and cultures. Aboriginal art in North Gallery among very best contemporary art I've seen anywhere. Spent 6 hours there today and it wasn't enough. Superb, free guided tours. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting this together. I doubt there is a better, more engaging and more beautifully displayed public collection of art anywhere in the world today.

The NSW Art Gallery is one of my favourite galleries of all time. You wouldn't say that I'm into art; BUT I LOVE THIS PLACE. You have a great variety of art for all tastes, a great cafe, easy parking (in the Domain Car Park) and top staff. I'm thinking about becoming a member there too. LOVE THEIR WORK!

I recently photographed a wonderful wedding at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and it was awesome. We were able to walk through the art gallery after hours and do some wedding photos of the couple. It was closed to the public so we had the place to ourselves which was great. The wedding reception took place in the restaurant which was modern and sophisticated. Overall it was a wonderful wedding and a great experience.

What a great way to spend an afternoon at the Art Gallery, viewing the Matisse Exhibition, stopping at the Cafe for a smooth blend cup of coffee and desert, a white chocolate lamington! Then finishing it all off at the book shop that has so much to offer; from art books, gifts, catalogues, art and craft products and accessories. This is a must for everyone. A place to relax, sit, viewing spectacular art and let the world go by....

Archibald Prize Fantastic entrants this year again worthwhile event in a lovely art gallery. Plenty of other collections too. The lovely thing about the gallery is also the outside surrounding location. Good place to visit in daytime and walk around trees and garden. Short walk from St James train station. Good for families, solo, couples and friends. The gallery is a must do for Sydney Love your local guide-❤️ Paid parking available. Bathrooms inside gallery.

Very unassuming building that doesn't have a hero presentation but rather a sequence of spaces and thresholds integrated with the landscape. Very enjoyable to meander around the grounds and gallery exhibits for FREE. They have been exceptionally concious to present aboriginal arts and culture at the forefront theme throughout their murals, sculptures, animations and interactive pieces. The best installation at the time of my visit is the one we get to play with clay. Long queues at times and definitely the highlight for the young ones and the young at heart.

Highly recommend seeing the Louise Bourgeois exhibit (ends April 28th, 2024). I enjoyed it so much I’m actually considering going again. Part of it exists above ground and the other part of it exists below in The Tank, which formerly housed oil for the naval fleet. The new buildings are quite lovely with its $345 million dollar investment for building. All the buildings are worth a visit as this gallery is home to some very wonderful pieces of art!

It is worth planning a few hours for this place. Personally, I am very pleased with the visit. The atmosphere is wonderful and friendly, I was greeted at the door and given short instructions about current exhibitions. There are many levels and the thematic range is diverse. That's why I'm convinced that everyone will find something interesting. The new building/wing includes modern and interactive installations, which I liked the most. I am adding this place to my favourites and looking forward to visit it again.

So amazing, lots to look at and most of it is free entry. Definitely a great day out. Would recommend a couple of hours as there is a lot to look at. They have a great collection of Australian artworks as well as a rotation of international art. The surrounding botanical gardens are also a lovely walk.

Solid art museum with lots to see among its varied exhibits. The Japan Supernatural touring exhibition was spectacular and the audio narration is a mandatory addition. One could easily spend a few days at least here, which is great because it's free. However, it's a bit out the way by public transportation which was a bummer.

Love coming here for the special exhibits. The permanent exhibits quite good too- best place to spend the day if you are bored , so much to see and there's food here too which ain't too badly priced. Clean, well maintained, air conditioned and spacious. Currently building a new section so I can't wait to see it when it's done!

The new wing is amazing. It’s an architectural delight. Definitely make sure you put on the list, - The Tank & - The Spirit Room. If you arrive at 10 am, you can head straight to these special areas so you can enjoy them without as many people.

Accessible for the public, good places for anyone who wants to know about history and art. You may get some inspiration and insight from it. They got two buildings and an excessive exhibition with a vast range of themes. Spent 3-4 hours if you only select a few artworks to have a detailed look at. The information is detailed about each artwork, the artist, and the history or possible meanings behind the creation. Got cafes inside each building, which allow you to get refreshments and rest yourself. Seats are available around the whole gallery, which is nice. Impressed by galleries related to Aboriginal people and LGBT+, one with artworks created by high school students during Covid-19. I went when Wednesday since they will have longed opening hours.

First time I have visited the Art Gallery of NSW and it is amazing. There is something for everyone to enjoy no matter what your taste is. I particularly enjoyed the Australian art section. There is a lot of art to see, so you’ll need to allow plenty of time.

Wow, what an amazing place, free entry, and we spent all day there. The art and sculpture is just about the best I've ever seen. Huge modern building next to the older art gallery. Lots of art for everyone's taste. Shop, toilets and a,cafe, what more could you ask for

I was overwhelmed with the amount of art. I went to the South building. I couldn't find the North building. I was pleasantly happy to have free entry and free cloaking. There were multiple galleries with different types/themes of art. My favorite was the aboriginal and art by LGBTQ+ artists. I was not prepared with the amount of time necessary to view all of the museum. I advise at least 2 - 3 hours. Actually, you could go every day for an hour for several weeks to truly appreciate the art.

Lovely experience, amazing art by Vasily Kandinsky and Louise Bourgeois. The gallery as a whole is a great space, love the new North building especially the tank. We try two of restaurants both nice friendly venues. Simple menu but reasonably priced, quick and efficient service. I have been to the gallery before and will go back in the future. I recommend buying your tickets before you go online if you can, you will avoid waiting and most likely get a good deal.

Absolutely loved my visit here! Highly recommend checking out the tank if you get the chance. I saw the Louise Bourgeois exhibition there and it was incredible! They really captured the morbid passion of her work in the space. I also really appreciate the amount of cafes, bathrooms, and gift shops. And such a variety of work on display! Could easily spend a whole day exploring :)

My favourite art gallery of all time. Japanese Supernatural exhibition was absolutely incredible!!! Food is very expensive though, however, it's only a short walk through the park to some nice cheap eating spots in the city. Spent hours walking through different exhibits. Perfect place to lose yourself and gain some inspiration. Would spend weeks here if I had the time.

Went there re helping someone get advice re found Chinese artworks expatriated from China pre-1949. They said they used to do authentications/valuations á la Antiques Roadshow but no longer 😒. After that had time for a short look around. Bumped into old Cookie looking a bit remorseful...

Always love a visit to the Gallery. Yesterday did a free tour of the National with Katherine who was a great guide, who focused our attention on some beautiful art, some thought provoking art and art that provokes a response. All of it fascinating. I thoroughly recommend a visit to this exhibition, its art thats current. Immerse yourself.

Surrounded by beautiful parklands, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of the country's most distinguished art museums. The building dates from 1885 and houses spacious, light-filled galleries and Grand Courts, with collections ranging from works by the European masters and Asian artists to evocative contemporary art from around the world. The gallery also houses one of the largest collections of aboriginal art in Australia. After admiring all the masterpieces, you can relax at the café or restaurant, or browse the gallery gift shop.

I skipped the Archibald exposition and really enjoyed seeing the permanent collections and the building itself. In December 2022 when the new building opens it is truly going to be a spectacular attraction. The restaurant has a great view over the city and laudable dining. Entry during construction is a bit convoluted especially during rainy days, be careful!

I visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales recently, and it was an outstanding experience. One of the highlights was the free entry, which made it accessible to everyone. What impressed me even more was the absence of long queues during my visit, allowing me to explore the gallery without any hassle. Inside, I found a treasure trove of historical paintings and sculptures. The collection was truly remarkable, featuring works that spanned various artistic movements and time periods. It was a journey through art history, from classic masterpieces to contemporary creations. The diversity of the artworks on display made this gallery a very interesting place to visit. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just looking for a culturally enriching experience, the Art Gallery of New South Wales has something for everyone. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Sydney, as it offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of art, and the fact that it's free is a wonderful bonus.

A beautiful addition to the art gallery, entry is free of charge, and the gallery is very tastefully laid out. There are plenty of food options, and there are public toilets on site. The artwork is of varying quality but is all quite unique and interesting. Accessibility is very good with elevators available and wide dooways. There are staff on hand to help and to answer questions. Highly recommended.

Fabulous! Everything from the outside architecture to the permanent and temporary exhibitions are exceptional!! Beautiful works from Australia and Europe feature well. Newer exhibitions are from Asia as they become mite prominent and their old asset history is brought pour of the closed and dark attitudes of times gone by. We saw the Japanese exhibition featuring the demon and spirit world that was a big part of old culture and is the origins of modern day Manga. We paid special entry $22 .. actually they politely honour senior concession etc too. The staff told is of the free commentary our starting a short time after our arrival. It was fantastic. The wonderful lady presentation was a delight and told us about the artists and history in a informative, passionate and light hearted manner. A real highlight. We then spent time in the other galleries ... everything from Picasso to Tim Roberts ! Get along and see the amazing collection. You will be amazed at what your taxes can offer. We also are lunch at the bistro bar. Food and service were spot on. Good views too.

First time going to the Art Gallery and there were some amazing paintings and installations on display, including a couple that really moved me. The big silver guy (yes I'm an art afficionado as you can clearly tell by my description) was not a moving piece but was quite spectacular. Recommend going, especially after the renovations/extension.

Highly recommended. Staff are always so lovely. My latest visit was to see the Matisse exhibition which came with a guided tour. Disability parking is limited so keep that in mind. You will either have to go across grass from a nearby carpark or drop off as there are only a few disabled spots out there front. Other than that cannot fault the gallery. Always a privilege to visit.

If you love art, the art gallery is a must visit. Much of the gallery is free to access, with only special exhibitions requiring a paid ticket. The free section is separated into different themes and eras, and is a great showcase with an emphasis on Australian artists across more than one floor. The works of art include paintings, sculptures and other objects, photographs and film. There's also a couple of sit down food restaurants/cafes, a gift shop, and great restroom as well as hand sanitising facilities. Staff are also friendly and helpful.

Sad to see such a place become so political. The main gallery has been squashed down to make way for alternative exhibits that would be better seen in MOMA. The Archibald exhibition was disappointing this year as it seems to be just political commentary rather than seeing the skill of the artists - some of the exhibits were childish and the children’s section seemed to hold more taken than the main. The winner of the portrait prize want even a portrait. The gallery seems to have left the mainstream and wandered into niche, statement pieces that would deter the general population for enjoying this public space.

The Art Gallery of NSW is absolutely lovely! It has art from different parts of the world, including European, Asian and aboriginal works. Next to that, it’s very well organized and the information next to the paintings are useful. The entry is free, however you need to pay if you wish to visit an additional exposition, which constantly changes.

The Art Gallery's new installations in their North building are phenomenal and definitely not something to sleep on. All floors had intriguing and beautiful art pieces, so I highly recommend you try and see everything the building had to offer. I recommend making an effort to view "The Tank" as it was incredibly breathtaking and am outstanding experience. The gift shop near the entrance is also a wonder as it has wonderful merchandise of some of my favourite art pieces. Staff members were all also incredibly nice and accommodating.

Great place to learn about all sorts of art, from paintings to sculptures to aboriginal and modern art - I adore this place. Most of the art is proudly done by Australian artists too. The placements of the art is done well in a sense that there is a theme to it. Entrance is free. There's a cloakroom to check your bag in. There's a free tour group that you can join but I'm not exactly sure what time it goes.

We liked this museum, though we are used to a more ‘structured’ route through the museum from other countries. Not a bad thing, just be aware you may need a little bit more time to find the best way through the exhibitions.

A great way to spend 1/2 a day looking at some amazing art. Followed it up by visiting the state library and their collection

It's a new moden NSW art gallery building with outdoor Woolloomooloo view. Free admission for anyone, no booking needed. Disable friendly gallery, multilingual headphones translator provided with available friendly staff. Cafe for quick bite and coffee is inside the building as well. Try the clays activity for fun.

I haven't been able to visit the old gallery since the new building opened next door. This time, however, is a facilitating trip down memory lane. The classic showpiece has been reorganised into showrooms by topics rather than periods, which is a refreshing way of seeing the art from a different perspective. It took me an entire Friday afternoon to appreciate the showpieces, and I didn't have enough time to go through the other showroom. I have to say that this gallery requires at least 3 days to view all.

Great place to visit! Defenetly would recommend to visit new South building for modern art🤩That's just amazing, something new, fresh and modern. Also who prefer classical art should visit North building. Entry free and a lot of things to see❤️Defenetly will back again.

The art gallery is such a lovely place to visit. There are amazing works of art to see and a cute gift shop with an assortment of items. There is parking a short walk for the buildings that is a bit pricey. The staff are lovely and these are places to put your bags.

The new building is absolutely sensational and the exhibitions are amazing. The architecture really speaks for itself and provides a futuristic yet cosy style. The navigation was somewhat tricky but there were plenty of staff to assist along the way. The gift shop has some nice bits. Most exhibits are access friendly except for one. Very much enjoyed the time we spent here. Great addition to the main Gallery

Love it here - the walk in through the domain is gorgeous, so many exhibits and love that they change quite frequently. Any event I’ve attended at the art gallery is very enriching. Also one of my favorite things - they often have free movies on Wednesday nights and on the weekend. Always cool classic movies. The eating places inside and right outside are great too.

Came here to see the Archibald exhibition $25 for an adult. At 12 & 2pm there was a physical audio tour. They have a new building next door, so now there is the north and south buildings. The cloak room is great. There is a tap to donate $5 on the counter. The cafe was underwhelming with the savoury dishes not good value, the hummingbird ake was tasty though. One of the best features are all gender toilets. See photos. I would visit again.

Very beautiful gallery and free!! There are escalators and a lift to help you get around the several floors. Little confused by the order of the artwork, seemed to jump theme a lot (or maybe I misinterpreted!!) but otherwise a nice experience. Cafe / restaurant available.

@ArtGalleryofNSW, Sydney, is not just a gallery, but a sensory haven that brings art to life in the most immersive ways. My journey through its corridors was an experience I won't easily forget: Perfectly situated near the Royal Botanic Garden, the gallery stands as an architectural masterpiece in itself. Its expansive design guarantees visitors a serene and unhurried experience as they immerse themselves in art. One of the standout experiences for me has been the "Art After Hours" sessions. These evening events, filled with workshops and concerts, resonate with creativity. The acoustics are phenomenal, ensuring that the music wafts perfectly through all the galleries, making art viewing a multisensory treat. The gallery's commitment to making art approachable is evident in its participatory exhibitions. Some even allow for tactile interactions, ensuring every visitor gets a personalized touch to their experience. A nod of appreciation to the dedicated student staff is necessary. Their friendly demeanor and readiness to assist transformed my visit into a seamless journey of discovery. The free guided tours provided are a boon, especially for those keen on a deeper understanding of the artworks and their history. Each guide brings a unique perspective, adding layers to the interpretation of the exhibits. The Members Lounge deserves a special mention. Its welcoming ambiance provides a tranquil oasis for members to relax, reflect, and refresh during their visit. The fact that there's no entrance fee exemplifies the gallery's commitment to community enrichment and fostering a love for art among a broader audience. Inclusivity is at the heart of the gallery's operations. With thoughtful accessibility features, they ensure that art is accessible to everyone, irrespective of their needs. To round off a perfect day, the in-house shop stands ready to offer beautiful mementos, ensuring that a piece of the gallery stays with visitors long after they've left. It has two buildings, both Of them are free.

I just wanted to congratulate the Art Gallery of NSW for its tremendous membership program. Last night a dear friend took me to see the Kandinsky exhibition, which was inspiring, and we popped into the member's lounge for a quick vino before hand. I was highly impressed with the staff there. In particular, Cathy on reception was charming, well-informed, and helpful. While Boris, behind the bar, was an absolute delight. If these two people represent the calibre of staff the gallery attracts then it must be a wonderful place to work indeed. And I would recommend anyone who attends a lot of exhibitions there seriously consider the membership program as the lounge added another dimension to the whole experience.
