My favorite Sushi joint in Vancouver (downtown location) and I'm therefore humbly stoked and super lucky that they have a few locations scattered around Greater Vancouver. The sashimi is killer, dope big fat portions of delicious fresh seafood. I normally always use the California Combo or Tuna and Salmon Combos as a go-to and it never fails, consistently super tasty sushi always from this place at great value with awesomely plentiful portions. I wanted to try something new so I rolled the dice on the Sweet Mango Paradise Roll which was also super yummy and the mix of different flavors make a delicious punching Combo. I never knew that sweet fruity flavors worked so well with sushi, I would 100% recommend and not hesitate to get it again! The staff are super friendly, approachable, efficient and talented at making incredibly delicious food and atmosphere. A cute and quaint vibe in this laid back joint makes it a great option always. Support local businesses!

This place is always busy! That means it's consistently good. The portions are surprisingly big and the prices are decent. Parking can be a hassle as there are limited spots. If you walk in expect to wait about 15-20 minutes on a normal day. Waitresses are friendly and always smiling. One of my top to go places for sure.

Good food, lots of options to choose from, the only downside is the limited parking spaces in this plaza. While eating there, we saw a lot of people ordering food for take out. It was busy on a week night and service was not too bad. Portions were good for the price and as a group, we got to try a couple of each other’s dishes including the different types of sushi, poke bowl, and nigiri.

Today I experienced the worst quality sushi ever. I am a regular at this place. The quality is getting worse every time I visit. Cut is not even. Found a dead fly on my salmon sashimi. Skilled Sushi Chef is urgently needed. Should pay more attention to “quality control”.

We were there last Saturday evening January 22, 2022. The Fried Oyster that they served us looked good from the outside, but when it was sliced open it really SMELL BAD (Rotten). We politely and discreetly told the lady server that we are returning it and cancell that order.

I ordered the yaki udon I asked the lady if it has bean sprouts cuz I can’t eat it with out it and how big it was, there’s literally almost nothing in here first, and no bean sprouts, I told her about it and she ignored me at first and the second time saying it nicely she said “ oh srry” walked away. I’ve had the best food at any other place. Totally do not recommend go spend ur money at a sushi Togo better than this place.

Arrived in Vancouver from Singapore 🇸🇬, and after recuperating from the long flight, we went for a day trip and then dinner at 'Sushi California'. Udon with Tempura was delicious with tasty prawn🍤 and well fried vegetables 🥕 and sweet potatoes. Both sushi 🍣 and sushi rolls were LARGE and generous, but the rice was not as good and authentic as we had eaten in Singapore. Grilled salmon with vegetables was very tasty. 😋😋😋

Still one of my favorite sushi restaurant in Metro Vancouver. Quality and portion still decent. Always love their delicious sushi roll, spicy sashimi, and tempura. Comfortable seating and service went well. Highly recommended to try this restaurant.

Used to be the place to go for affordable , delicious and fresh sushi, but the place has been going down hill in the last few years. Food quality has been going down, the service level has been going down, and prices have been going up. In my last order with them, I ordered about $150 worth of sushi for take out and I have specified that we wanted extra ginger and wasabi (on each of the items). When we opened up the boxes at home we saw No ginger and wasabi in the boxes and saw just three packs of ginger and wasabi. Just 3 little packs. I think other places would of given more than that on a regular order, when its $150 worth of food. When we were picking up, I assumed that there would be ginger and wasabi in each box and they were giving us the three packs as extra. But nope, there were none with the sushi, and only three small containers of ginger and wasabi. Rolls are a mess, the only good thing is their sashimi, I used to go for their giant portions but while everyone else has caught up to their size , sushi california has been downsizing. Furthermore, its not even that cheap anymore, I rather pay more for a better tasting , better quality sushi and a place with amazing customer service than sushi california. I never returned since this experience and already found my replacement, where they dont cheap out on giving extra ginger and wasabi. - From once a long time customer and advocate.

I didn't expect much for cheap sushi but rice was really bad... hard and too much sugar... Proper preparation method needs to be studied and practiced. How I would make the rice is: use fresh rice, check rice for floaters when washing.. if you get floating rice it is old. ( floating rice is hard ) only need to rinse 2 times with little water so the rice rubs against each other. Keep rice in water for an hour before cooking. Once cooked add "microwaved" vinegar/salt/sugar, Cool down the rice right away with a fan as shown in the picture. (rice will get hard as it gets cold so you need to make rice several times a day) There is also a strong smell of vinegar in the store which does not seem too clean.

The place seems very understaffed. It took almost 20 minutes for someone to look in our direction after we got seated. The food was decent, but the pricing seems pretty high. Google says it’s one dollar sign but I’d consider it a two

I love the size of salmon nigiri. It is more than one bite size. The portion of rice seems more than other places but I love the taste of sushi rice here. And I love crispy avocado roll too. Whatever sauces that was on is so harmonious with crispy texture. And also Dynamite roll did not let me down as well. Roll was bit expensive but it is okay. Sashimi price went up so much. Everything is over $20. Anyway it is decent place to visit.

It’s not Sushi 🍣 California’s🌴 best location. Parking limited and they don’t do sockeye wild salmon 😢 rolls were ok, as they fall apart easily. But prices are very fair and service is decent. Still my favorite location is downtown on Thurlow. 👍

We were greeted heartily by the team upon entry and that was the beginning of a great dining experience. Our order was the dinner for 2. This came with steaming bowls of miso soup, a plate of 2 kinds hand rolled maki, tempura platter, a fresh salad and a nigiri dish. Freshness was in every bite. Team members very attentive and knowledgeable. They helped us figure our some of the less familiar nigiri cuts like the clam. Very good value for money (about $40 for 2) We will be back to try their ala carte menu This is a local biz worth supporting Great Job Sushi California Coquitlam!! Keep it up, guys!!

Come See Come Saw, California Sushi is a place for standard sushi fair. I got a deluxe chirashi. Yes the pieces are big but for $45 it should be. The rice could have been fresher. It wasn’t fluffy and did not clump as nicely. For the amount of sashimi one got I thought there should be more rice to help balance the flavour of the oily fish. However, for those on a diet less rice is helpful. The sashimi was quantity over quality. One can most definitely get great quality of fish in the lower mainland and for the price paid I was expecting that. Finally perhaps it was because it was after 7pm but service could have been better. My fiancé came to meet me. We asked for a menu… but staff never came to take his order.

Ordered dinner tonight, I had Ebi Sunomono, Fried Cali Roll, Tamago, Salmon, and Takoyaki. It looked really good but the taste was rather disappointing. I've had a lot of sushi in my life and this was very mediocre for the price point unfortunately.

Zero star to the management but I know running business amid COVID ain't easy. 5 stars are given to those dedicated staff. Here are the issues: 1. why would you even set up a phone line while nobody is answering 2. placed my order on a third party app almost 1 hour ahead (yes, they are super busy) and went to the front door at the same time when it said the order would be ready by. the nice dude there checked and told me the order wasn't ready yet but he informed the kitchen I was there. Took another 25 mins before my order was finally ready (according to the app)they probably didn't even prepare my food without me showing up. I did not wait and went home with nothing. *the wait time on the app changed from 7:10PM to 6:45PM to 7:20 then finally at 7:10PM again. 3. Work on your system, please. I've seen people scattered outside the restaurant in the cold. You know you are a popular restaurant but why get people waiting outdoor for that long when you can have a better system so people can show up only when their order is ready.? for those who want to get food at this place, be aware that it could take up anytime from 45 mins to 90 mins to get your food ready.

The food is good, but the wait is just too long. When I ordered my food I was told it would be 45 minute wait. That's fine, I want to eat. When I arrived they took my payment and told me the food would be ready soon. I waited outside for 50 minutes before they brought my order out to me. If they know that it's going to be a long wait, then be honest about it. I would much rather wait in my home for an hour and a half, then stand outside not knowing what "soon" means.

Waiting over an hour in the cold after order 2 hours before pick up time. Was not warned about the waiting time at all. No one was apologetic. They seems to prioritize door dash and Uber Eats orders over orders called in. Don't they know that they earn less money from DD and UE orders? Food was cold when I got it (I got crunch calamari, not supposed to be cold) I'll be happy to visit other sushi places near by next time. If I order from them again, I will do it through DD or UE, even though they earn less money, I should get my order faster without waiting in the cold. I added a photo of how they are "structuring" the waiting line. They make you wait in a line to pay, then once you pay, you wait in another group, (which is probably when they actually start to make your food, if you are lucky) then about 50 minutes later, they will call the order number on your receipt for you to pick up your food.

Take out is very disappointing. The portion of the chicken in the teriyaki is very small. Almost only chicken skin. Not worth the price you pay. BTW the picture is the chicken on a salad plate (not a diner plate)

Attention Sushi California Owners and managers, I am writing to express my disappointment and frustration with the treatment I received during my recent interaction with your restaurant’s staff and manager at Lougheed location. Today I ordered takeout from your restaurant and unfortunately did not receive a sauce that was supposed to be included in my order. When I called to inform your staff about the missing sauce, the lady on the phone asked if there was anything that could be done to improve my meal. I requested a $5 credit for my next visit, to which she responded that she would speak to the manager. After a few minutes, she returned to the phone and informed me that the manager said this had happened before and that they could not do anything to accommodate me. When I asked for clarification, I was accused of lying about the missing sauce. I requested to check the camera footage to verify my claim, but was told that the camera was broken that day. I asked to speak to the manager, but was told that the manager was not available. I was appalled by the way I was treated and the accusation of being a liar. As a customer, I expect to be treated with respect and courtesy, especially when I am simply asking for what was supposed to be included in my order. The fact that I was accused of lying without any evidence to support such a claim is unacceptable. I even went to the restaurant to speak to the manager and resolve the issue, but unfortunately, the manager was not available at that time. It is disheartening to see that your establishment does not take responsibility for its mistakes and instead accuses its customers of being dishonest. I would appreciate it if you could look into this matter and take appropriate action to ensure that this does not happen to any other customers in the future. I hope that you will be able to rectify this situation and provide me with the respect and professionalism that every customer deserves. Sincerely, Napatsanan

Great bang for your buck. Highly recommend! FOOD: Good quality sushi and sashimi. The sashimi pieces were big for the donburi. SERVICE: decent. Food came in a reasonable time frame. Staff was friendly. ENVIRONMENT: Looks nice. A good date spot. PRICE: reasonable. Good quality for the medium to lower price point.

This North Road location served up some tasty and fresh sushi. Compared to the other Korean sushi chain their quality seem to be better. We enjoyed the Korean inspired stone rice bowl very much. It will be a staple from here on whenever we're in the area!

Sushi at first sight… If my memory recalls correctly, this was the first Sushi California I came to when they first opened. I think it’s safe to say they have upgraded their menu and quality ever since then plus opened up a few more locations throughout the lower mainland. The service is always decently good, the food is quite decent for its price compared to similar restaurants, and the casual atmosphere here makes dining somewhat relaxing and casual for all. This time around, I ordered the following to go; 1. Assorted sashimi. Everything was fresh and of good portion. However, I think they forgot the deep fried heads from the amaebi? And they didn’t separate each individual sashimi properly. Rule #1 do not and never let a different fish or sashimi contaminate each other!! 2. Spider futomaki. All the ingredients were fresh and the soft shell crab still retained its light crunch. Seemed a little less messy to eat than the regular spider roll? 3. Salmon, tuna, ikura and uni nigiris. Very fresh, good portion especially the uni nigiris, very generous amount. And the rice was nicely cooked and seasoned. 4. Bluefin trio nigiris (Akami, chu toro, o toro). They were super fresh, buttery, beautiful colours, and of generous portion. It’s only $18 for the set, it’s a steal! Loved it! I seldom dine in at this location now because the shared parking lot with other restaurants could be a challenge during peak hours. However there are street parkings available. The service is always decently good here, well at least for me. Plus their sushi and sashimi are always fresh besides this time around, didn’t like how the sashimi all mingled together in the take out box. I really don’t recall a bad experience with any of the Sushi California locations yet (knock on wood). For some casual sushi, I think this is the safe recommendation. At least it’s Sushi at first sight for me. Solid 3.5 stars from me

I only ordered salmon nigiri for my children. It was cheaper than other places, and the amount was satisfactory. There is no wasabi in the sushi and it is supposed to be dipped separately. I liked the way it was because I ordered food for my children. The quality of the food is more cost effective than high.

Satisfactory experience at Sushi California Coquitlam location. Quality was nominal and presentation was fair. Service was respectable and our orders were fulfilled swiftly. The table was very wobbly, although could be easily fixed by adjusting the bolt. Overall, Sushi California Coquitlam location is a modest establishment for sushi goers.

Sushi was bad, rolls didn't even hold together well. Avocado in our rolls was brown as if it was sitting for along time. Rolls were basically mush.Miso was good. Called and let them know about the rolls sent them a picture and they wanted to offer half off as a credit. Said they were testing out new seaweed, not sure why they would test on consumers. What an embarrassment to a sushi restaurant. A proper solution would have been a credit for all the rolls we ordered, not half of the order.

Food is good but the popularity has increased significantly during the pandemic and wait times through the dinner rush are very long. Parking is as bad as it's always been. We will likely try other places so that we don't need 2 people to do the pickup. Prices have increased a lot over the years.

I’d like to preface this by saying that I generally don’t write reviews and try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I’ve had a lot of sushi, including airports and malls, and this was easily some of the least fresh, worst tasting that I’ve had. I couldn’t even finish the crispy roll because it was soggy and and the imitation crab tasted like it had been sitting out too long. On top of that, I called in my order, the lady told me 15 minutes, I arrived to pick it up and they just stared at me blankly. They’d confirmed my order on the phone and I read out the phone number I had called and they confirmed it was theirs, but they didn’t have my order and hadnt even started it. I had to wait another 15 minutes for them to make it, which if you only have a 30 minute lunch break for work and are driving from another location is not cool at all. I will not be returning
