Amazing and delicious food here. Their staff is alway friendly. Had the best borsch soup here. Sourdough breads are well made and very tasty. The bread pared with our soup has herring spread which give a special flavor to them. The chocolate babka is very chocolaty with reasonable price. My son is crazy for their honey cake (medovyk). The cinnamon roll has very strong cinnamon aroma and is so good with coffee. The place is not big and not quite for dine in, but surprisingly, their food is served with stainless knife /fork, porcelain plate, and white cotton napkin. During the pandemic, after seeing so many places provide disposable cutleries, paper napkins, Kozak does give us very unique and pleasant dining experience. Another thing I like is the way they pack their food with paper bags and twine, very environment friendly👍

Found this place as it is close by to the hidden wonders magic show. Came here for a bite pre-show. The food was amazing and so was the service. The lady was very helpful and friendly as it was our first time coming. Ordered the bigger combo, with borscht, pierogies, a crepe thing and cabbage rolls. Everything was just perfectly done and came out quick. It was so cool how they gave a little instructions card on how to properly enjoy the borscht. Great touch and nice to ensure the experience was proper. I am so happy that we came here! Looks like they have a few locations around town. So excited for my next visit!

Ukrainian comfort food. They have limited seating so be prepared if you’re planning to dine in. Otherwise, their babka is amazing and I always get a loaf whenever I’m in the area. I highly recommend that you get the two combos. They fill you up quite a bit and I love their cabbage rolls and the pierogies.

The good here is great! They have lots of choices for vegetarians. The croissants here are just out of the world! The pistachio croissants have a light and yet rich filling! Latte is as one would expect it, the coffee here have freshness that’s up there! The dining area is small and cozy and she staff are super friendly!

Highly recommend!! Definitely one of the best bakeries in New Westminster. Not only are their products delicious but also their service is really good. The only things I wish they had are more tables and a bigger place. Usually we have to get things to go and therefore are not fresh when I eat them. If you are going on a weekend prepare for the line up.

We went for the famous cube. Chose a few other baked goods to try out as well. The lady that helped us gave us a complimentary piece of their delightful chocolate babka(I’d definitely go back for more of that). I’m a sucker for borscht as well so I got a container of that too. 10/10 would recommend to a friend!

Never thought I will write this review.. I love your place. I love your bread and your baking goods.. especially your honey cake.. and, what was a surprise when I found out that you recently increased price so much that I can afford to buy it only once in a month..$6.25 per piece of cake is insane.. sorry to tell you this.. do you really think that any grandma can afford to buy a cake for this price? or poppy seeds bun for $4 ? Very disappointed. I guess now I can only afford to buy your bread.. at least until it stays within the same price range..

Despite the raving reviews, I feel a bit conflicted. First, the food was delicious. I’ll get that out of the way. However, a couple things really bugged me while I was there. I hope to back so I can get a better experience so I can bump up my rating. First, the extremely limited seating was a bit of a turnoff for me. I came with a party of 4 and we were lucky to get a bar table that seated us all. Unfortunately, we all had to face a wall and not each other. The place is small, so there’s not much they could do about this. Another thing that really irked me was that my friend waited 15+ minutes for his food but they mistakenly made it for takeout and just let it sit there while he watched us finish our meals. They apologized and offer to remake his food but it would take another 15 minutes, so we just told them to reheat the meal. My friend got a pastry as an apology but I guess it rly killed my experience because I wanted us all to enjoy our food at the same time. I guess I’ll likely be only eating there by myself or for takeout in the future, unless I’m visiting another one of their locations.

Absolutely lovely people running this hidden gem!! The food is everything you want it to be - comforting, nostalgic, flavourful, scrumptious! Their pastries are also delicious, and great specials on their borscht and bread. Only downside is limited seating - They could easily triple their seating and it would be full all the time! A must-try.

You need to try their borscht soup with sour cream. It was surprisingly good. In the combo, we also had the bacon & potato pierogies, mushroom & chicken crepe and cabbage rolls which are all tasty. The staff were nice and fast. I also like their hibiscus thyme lemonade & rumbaba - the pastry with rum. We bought 2 soups & sour dough to bring home, and that's a good deal at $25.

Nice little bakery in downtown New Westminster. Good selection of Ukrainian baked goods and bread. They also have a few hot dishes, such as latkes. The dine-in area is very small, so it's best to order for take-out. I went there for the Cube Croissants during the Croissant Crawl event. I was not disappointed. All 3 flavors were amazing.

Their sourdough bread is tasty and dense. Tried the Hungry Tato combo which allowed a nice sampling of lots of their dishes. Everything tasted wholesome and homemade. The napoleon cake was just alright for me. Loved the instruction card on how to eat borscht. They even have homemade kvass!

My friends and I tried a few meal and dessert options, and they were all amazingly delicious. Dessert pierogies, sour cherry strudel, cabbage rolls, honey dessert = all of them 10/10! Although there isn't much space (there's a total of 8 seats and 3 tables) they will serve you the food if you're seated. Great service, which includes being served water, napkins, and cutlery. They also have other items for purchase (like interesting vinegars) which will make perfect gifts for the holidays. There's another location downtown with more seating, we will be trying that location soon!

The food was delicious! Definitely worth going to for a Ukrainian adventure if you are in the area! I think the one thing I still think about is their honey cake which was just mouth watering. The decor was also very nice for a small eatery and bakery along with the surprising large pastry selection. So perhaps you're wondering: "You only gave three stars, but your review sounds glowing!" Well, unfortunately, it was because of the service from who I believe may have been the owner herself. I bought a good amount of food but didn't get my receipt, and I waited...and waited, and waited for the food. I had not bought food that took long to prepare, cause it was already prepared, I was just waiting for her to take it out of the "display case" and put it on a plate. I walked up to the lady and asked her about my food if it was going to take a bit longer, she just looked at me and walked away. At this point I was a bit offended. I started to really wonder if I was going to get the food at all. All she had to do was tell me "yes, just a bit longer" or " almost done, just a few more minutes." But she just looked at me and left to the back. I don't know if I had something on my face, or maybe she felt hangry as it was close to lunch time, or perhaps she felt like I was acting entitled. But she was the one who took my order, she didn't even act like she cared about what I had just asked. But the redeeming part of this story was that another worker who was running all around and helping a bunch of people was who asked me if I was waiting for something. She apologized about the food having taken so long to come out and finally brought me the food. The owner lady did in the end come up to the table just to offer cutlery, but that was it. This was my honest review, I wish I could have given it a higher rating but it is unfortunately not possible. I am usually happy to give a 5 star review, especially to smaller businesses, but I just wish the lady paid attention to what I asked, it wasn't a crazy question.

I ordered their baked goods, so good and well worth the price! The perfect balance of sweet and soft. This has to be my favorite bakery in the Lower Mainland. Left to right: - Dark Chocolate Babka - Apricot Sloyka - Cashew & Chocolate Cookies - Bograch Goulyash

Exceptional service and delicious perogies! Followed by nose and found this cute bakery/pastry Ukrainian store. The storefront is not big, with bar seating for 5 people. The place was busy, with clearly marked covid standing stickers. Plus, I think the majority of patrons know how cozy the little eatery is so folks were lining up outside to get in. Ordered the four cheese perogies at the till and sat down. The staff there are friendly and patient with my questions. The perogies were delicious. Will return again.

YUM. Found this gem while in town visiting my uncle in the hospital and he had a very specific craving for perogies LOL If I hadn't JUST eaten, I'm pretty sure I would've bought half their baking and had a hard time deciding which authentic Ukrainian meal I would be experiencing. Will definitely be returning to sample more foods here next time I'm in town. Constant line up of people for good reason. Very small and busy spot so eating there might be a bit cramped but most people were ordering to go while we were there. Ps my uncle really enjoyed his perogies and we enjoyed our exclairs...

This have become our favourite breakfast place. The staffs are genuinely friendly, fast, and attentive. The perogies and babka are to die for. Coffee is good (wish refills are available 🤪). Their point system is encouraged and they always tell you if you qualified for a free cake or loaf of sourdough which I truly appreciate! We will definitely be back! It is a hidden gem in New West!

First time trying Ukraian food. Overall experience is good. The most impressive thing is the Ukraian latte and the crepe. The place is small and super busy, only around 3 tables, and you probably need to reserve online before you go, otherwise, it s hard to dine in especially during COV. We will definitely go back again.

This is a great local spot for Eastern European favorites. I ordered the lunch special with a little bit of everything, and a loaf of fresh sourdough for home. Their takeout packaging is designed to be eco friendly, with biodegradable soup containers, compostable cutlery, and cardboard clamshell all wrapped nicely in paper bags (the sour cream was in recyclable plastic, but nobody's perfect). Great vegan options too. Online ordering on their website was easy and user friendly. I was also able to request curbside pickup - if you call on arrival they will bring your order out. They also offer delivery via Skip The Dishes but with a reduced menu. Great takeout spot, though inside seating is limited.

I’ve always wanted to stop by and eat at Kozak. My mom and I didn’t know what to order and decided to give them a try. It’s delicious and you can tell it’s homemade with care. They even included a generous sample of their Babka. We will definitely be ordering again!

  • 4/5 Stephanie S. 2 years ago on Google
Sourdough and Babka were excellent. Would go back for these and/or to try different bread and pastries. Tasty Borscht but not sure if it’s supposed to have actual pieces of pork. Maybe it’s only pork broth? Have only seen a couple tiny shreds after going through half of a take out container.

I'm a regular customer for their sourdough bread. It's always baked perfectly! I've tried some of their baked goods and really enjoyed them all. Service for hot food is a bit slow, but I think that's because the place is super busy. Staff are friendly and look happy to be working here.

Delicious food and plenty of baked goods and desserts. The owner is nice. Only six seats for dining in. They got one of our orders wrong (pierogies had wrong filling) so they sent us home with a free dessert and extra order of pierogies. Get the pork crepes. They're amazing.

2021 update: I just wanted to update my review and verify-- I'm still eating here, it is so delicious. The expanded menu items (cafe style and coffees) are delicious. Truly such a gem, New West is lucky to have. It is so hard to find Ukranian food in the lower mainland. Growing up in Winnipeg, this has always been a sore spot. Imagine my delight when this little spot opened up in my neighbourhood! We've gone here a few times now, so I can properly weigh in. I love the holapchi. The borscht is sweet and sour, super hearty and oh so delicious. Buy a giant bucket of it, you won't regret it! My husband is in love with the sour cherry pastry and the chocolate babka is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Someone brought a loaf into the office, it was gone in about sixty seconds. The perogies are good too! I do find myself missing the one Winnipegger flavour-- cheese and potatoes. But that isn't necessarily super traditional LOL.

  • 5/5 Petra L. 3 years ago on Google
I love this place. Reminds me of bakeries back home in Germany. The bread is dark and hearty and the soups like your Grandma's. My favorites are the pastries there. Go check it out 😋☕🥐🍺Forgot to mention they have beer and other spirits.

I'm Ukrainian and Kozak has the best Ukrainian food out here. They have a fabulous menu! The last time I ordered to eat in, the cabbage rolls were different and not nearly as good as the packaged or the fresh since they opened. However the packaged cabbage rolls that I bought the same day are still the same wonderful original recipe.

Saw this place randomly on google maps and was feeling for some soup. Boy I am glad I went. What an incredible experience! Haven’t had such homemade tastes like this in a long time. Space in limited inside so go early or take it home. Do yourself a favour and go try this place out.

LOVE THIS PLACE. Staff is always great whenever I go in. Great coffee. They have nice deals in the mornings. There are so many delicious things to try but these are some of the things in particular I recommend: SWEET: the cruffin. the sweet cottage cheese crèpes. They serve it with this sweet cherry compote and sour cream and it's *chef's kiss*. SAVOURY: bean borscht, sourdough bread (yummy), feta and spinach pastry (I forget the exact name) go to Kozak!!!

  • 4/5 Rachel 5 months ago on Google
Some of the best tasting food and pastries I have tried!!! Truly delicious, but 1 star down because of how expensive everything is...6 perogies for $15? My wallet is crying because I can't keep buying them! Lots of vegan/vegetarian options that are clearly labeled, and also which meats are in certain food items - made it very easy for me to navigate what I could eat!

  • 5/5 Nico D. 3 years ago on Google
I have been ordering from Kozak for a couple of weeks now for lunch. To be honest, I wasn't too acquainted with Ukranian cuisine before this and didn't know what to expect. I honestly can say this food is not only delicious but it reminds me of the loving and warm home made food your mother or grandmother would make for you. I wish I could give this place 10 stars! I will continue to support this restaurant and I recommend anyone to give it a try, you'll love it!

I've seen the lineups outside this place and was excited to try it. It was so disappointing. I bought an almond croissant, an apple slice and some sort of layered cake slice. It was all so terrible I actually had to throw it out! Not sure if it was old but the pastry was tasteless and tough. I wanted to support local business but won't return.

Good food, friendly staff, but extremely slow.

Cashier couldn't correct my order of "schnitzels" to mean kotlety. We failed the order twice, only to succeed the cutlet dish on third try. Might've been difficult to order with masks on. Goulash wasn't hearty, could only discover three small pieces of meat and a large half-potato in paprika broth. A real goulash is chunky and filling, but not the one I had. Meat amount didn't seem a suitable size for other plates either. Great pierogi and pastry though!

I love coming here! It's a rare treat for me. I usually just get bread (brioche, challah) and I find them just so delicious. Next time I plan on getting their home made perogies, they look so cute and delicious; I have no doubts about them being good!
