I write this review knowing that the reputation of Veselka more than precedes it, but I am doing so anyway because I simply had to share my experience. (Case in point: I told a friend I ate at a Ukrainian restaurant Downtown, and he immediately replied, "Veselka?") The day I patronised the restaurant was particularly cold, and there was a line outside to get in. It would have been a miserably frostbitten experience but for the heat lamps along the way and the reassurances of the kind staff that our party would soon be seated. Once inside, we were attended to and subsequently served almost instantly, despite how busy it was during lunchtime. And this brings us to the food: simply wonderful! Although most of us were first-timers (more on that in a minute), my friend whose family is Ukrainian and Slovak swears by the dishes here, and with good reason. Every plate was picked clean within minutes! And the pricing, considering the quality and city, was quite fair. As we left the restaurant, I made sure to tell the gentleman who appeared to be the owner and/or manager how so many of us had never been before — but that we would be back.

I had their Beef Stroganoff and a Cappuccino. The crowd was medium, and we got a table without reservation at around 9 a in the morning. The food is so so delicious. Loved our first experience of Ukrainian food. Would love to return when we revisit NYC.

We ordered most of the different pierogi flavors and they really don't disappoint. My personal favorites would be the short rib & the sauerkraut/mushroom, though the classic and the cheese were fantastic too. The borscht was also terrific and the egg cream (though a bit of an acquired taste) was delightful. Would definitely recommend trying it out if you haven't already!

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It’s definitely a spot you shouldn’t miss. I’ve always loved the vibe in here and the service is excellent. Nice staff and servers. Love going here for brunch. Their pierogis are a must try for sure. I love that they have seasonal specials as well which is always good to try. Highly recommend this place.

Great food!!!! Only issue I had was it went too fast and my stomach didn't have room for more. Wish I lived in NY to eat more of this. Waitress was really knowledgeable and helpful, nice too! Great place to try. You won't regret it!

Both the of the borscht were amazing. One of the best soups I have ever had. We got two different combination plates: the latke with beef stroganoff and the cabbage roll with the different pierogis and a sausage. The side additions were so flavorful. Always such fast service as well

This is place is a must-try especially for those unacquainted to Ukrainian culture and cuisine. The menu was so diverse and covered almost every major Ukrainian dish from Side Dishes to the Dessert. The decor and ambiance are extremely familial and warm. Would recommend for all occasions.

You're gonna love it! We go here every time we are in the city. Ukrainian/Polish dishes like borscht, perogies, and vegetarian options. Yummy and quick but you're gonna want to linger in this cozy gem with friends.

This was my father‘s favorite restaurant for many years, and he would often organize his recreational activities so that he would end up nearby. Such an interesting and eclectic East Village crowd. There’s an interesting assortment of pierogies, borscht, stuffed cabbage, and other east European specialties. There is frequently a line to get in, but it moves pretty quickly, and the staff is always working very hard to please customers. This is very basic stuff, do not expect subtle flavors or artistic presentation but you will leave happy with a full stomach and not a tremendous dent in your wallet.

It’s a bright nice place. They have a lot of tables. Seems like Not enough staff members though. Simply because our waiter was in such a rush. I didn’t know if I should have taken it as if he didn’t wait to serve us or was just too busy with other tables. Anyway, he didn’t let us finish making our order and literally left after we had named 2 items only. And it happened many times. I had to call him and stop leaving us couple times. It was just rude. We had soups. The borstch was great. I loved it. But the rest of food was too salty. Crepes (cheese blintz $15) were huge and it was great. Veal Goulash very salty. So I would come back for cheese blitz but only if I could get a better service. At least while I try to order.

Borscht is awesome here! First I took a cup, and then ordered a bowl. Please add salo and garlic to the side. As for other dishes it actually tastes like it’s home made Ukrainian food that I used to eat visiting my grandmother. Wanted to specifically highlight the speed of serving people, it’s awesome! My soup was served just couple minutes after I placed the order.

One of NYC’s best ‘diners’ in that it is an elevated diner experience with tall ceilings, bright open windows, ample. (If slightly stuffed) seating. Arrive with a little extra time in case it’s busy (it’s always busy) and check out the pierogies, borscht (especially if it’s summer and they have the cold summer borscht), blintzes, and chicken schnitzel. They even have old timey drinks like lime rickeys and egg creams (chocolate syrup, milk, and seltzer). Some of the best comfort food in all the city and it’s a genuine NYC institution.

Went for brunch during COVID. Great outdoor space. Tables are spaced appropriately and servers wear masks. Had eggs with Pirogis and Keilbasa. Was really tasty. I dont know authentic Ukrainian but I like this place. If you only drink coffee, very reasonably priced.

So this is Ukrainian restaurant, I wanted to go there so long and finally I did it and it's all because I missed by our Ukrainian Borsh! And honestly my food))) So I was shocked thia place is so popular, we stayed on line like 10-15 minutes, inside was full, but it worth it. Ordered borsh and the vegetarian plate- 4 dumplings and 1 cabbage "golubets". Everything was tasty 😋, recommend

A like when a restaurant knows exactly what it wants to be. I had a good feeling as I walked in, because it was tucked away, away from noisy streets, a rarity in the city. The interior matched perfectly my expectations - a cozy, wood covered room reminiscent of old Europe. It felt just like the restaurants I visited in Hungary and the Czech Republic (not Ukraine, I know, but in the vicinity in terms of cuisine and landscape). One of the few places in the city where you can get a warm, comforting Eastern European meal, with great taste, large portions, and fair pricing.

A lot of people seem to really like Veselka, and I'd definitely say it's solid but I can't say I love it as much as other people seem to. It's a fun space and the food is pretty competent, but not really anything that special (with the exception of the cup of borscht I got which was quite tasty). The pierogies I got were tasty but not mind blowing. Service was good though, my party was definitely a headache because we kept having more people show up and they were able to work with that.

This place is great. Went to support Ukraine and stayed for the delicious food. Meat borchsct is mind-blowing and the boiled potato pierogis with onions and sour cream are just as tasty. I could literally eat the potato pancakes every day and never get tired of them. Veal goulash and stuffed cabbage also very good. Honey cake for dessert is big enough for two, especially after a meal like that. Anna our server was great and a pleasure to be around. Oh I forgot, if you like watermelon, I'm not a fan, you have to get the watermelon iced tea. It was so refreshing and the watermelon was so sweet, it may have converted me. Overall an incredible meal.

Delicious, reasonably priced Ukrainian comfort food, Veselka is one of my favorite spots in the East Village. Their pierogi and latkes are the best. Great place to stop by on a weekday for breakfast or for brunch with friends and family on the weekend. Friendly and attentive wait staff, service is prompt, and professional. Come hungry, and enjoy a taste of Ukraine in New York.

First of all I wanted to support Ukraine in this awful and unfair war. I heard a lot about this restaurant and wanted to try authentic Ukrainian food. It was really delicious and amazing experience. Also they donate for Ukrainian people which was also very important for me. Glory to Ukraine! And looking for a victory. P.S. Cold borscht was the best!

Absolutely amazing and probably my favorite restaurant that I visited while in NYC. I knew I wanted to visit for months before actually arriving in NY and drug my husband around to all the places I wanted to go, Veselka included. We were sat outside with no wait and our server attended to us quickly. It was not the overly friendly service I think we are accustomed to as Americans but I felt that made it seem a little more authentic. I took a risk (I'm not one for that usually) and tried the Ukrainian borscht, thinking I probably wouldn't like it and I didn't. I LOVED IT. We had several different items and my husband ended up ordering 2 entrees while I finished my one because he enjoyed the first so much and wanted more food. We also took the recommendation of our server to get the honey cake and that was very tasty as well. I can't wait for the next time I visit and can come back here.

Really solid Pierogies. We tried boiled as well as fried. Never had them with apple sauce. It was a great contrast in flavor with the sweetness. The service was Quick and efficient. The Staff was okay. Interior was clean. No complaints.

The lines in the evening and on the weekend are always crazy long and they don't do reservations so I FINALLY made it here for off-hours spur of the moment perogies. As promised, service was unfussy, coffee was strong, and perogies were had. I ordered the $17 Weekend Breakfast. A shallow bowl containing four potato pierogi, two over medium eggs, three half-strip sized slices of bacon, and a side of beet and horseradish salad came out. It also came with coffee or tea. The eggs and pierogi were unseasoned and chilling in some pierogi cooking water that made it into the bowl. Very bland. The bacon was good, and I loved the beet horseradish salad, but I wish there was more of it to make everything else less bland. Perhaps the other kinds of pierogi they had were less bland and there were better things on the menu but I would not recommend the weekday breakfast.

We went here on a Thursday at the end of October. We came for an early dinner since we had not had lunch, I think we arrived around 5pm-ish. We were seated immediately at a requested outdoor table. Service was fast, food was ready quickly and was amazing! I had boiled potato Perogies which was served with fried onions and sour cream. My husband had Beef Stroganoff which was a huge and hearty portion. He had a choice of side items and chose sauerkraut. My husband is Ukrainian and said the food reminded him of his childhood and the food his Baba made for him. I would say that's the highest praise a place can get. On a side note...Bathroom was dirty with pee all over the toilet seat and floor. There is one bathroom for both men and women that has 1 toilet and one urinal. That was the single only negative. In the last photo you can see the line that had formed within 30mins of our arrival. The line is all the way down the block!

Went for breakfast. The food was delicious though my eggs were overcooked. We sat outside and our server was frankly disinterested in serving us. We were unable to get a single refill of coffee the entire meal.

Ate outdoors on a Saturday night around 930pm , our waitress Olena was on point and made our experience next to perfect. She suggested some items on the menu and I went with the Ukrainian Borscht (like a meat and beet soup) Veal Goulash, and Short Rib Perogies. I very much recommend having mashed potatoes with the meal. We had Ukrainian beer and they were both to our taste. We would like to come again next time we visit the city. Food was delicious! 1st time eating this type of meal.

Our meal was incredible and I think about it often. Our server was kind, the food was delicious, and we appreciated the available restroom in a day of a ton of walking (although I think there was only one stall?). Will definitely visit again. Try the cold borscht - life changing!

The soups here are fantastic. The matzah ball soup and the borscht (beet soup) were both great. The borscht was extra delicious with sour cream added. The veggie burger was good not great, but you gotta realize the soups are the main attraction here. We got quart sized soups which are huge! 😊 WARNING: I ordered the vegetarian borscht and there were pieces of chicken in it ☹️

Loved the borscht, super flavorful. A little bit salty though but is good with bread. Fried mushroom pierogies were great, very good texture and not too oily. Boiled meat pierogies were good, but they seemed to have boiled it for a bit too long... And one of them broke! Overall would definitely come back for the soup!!!!!

Very historic Ukrainian diner near St Mark's place. This week was restaurant week so sample pierogies, stuffed cabbage and small soup like 30 dollars and they serve beer and alcohol and there is take-out. The diner has about 20 tables and is first come, first serve and the food is legendary the Borscht especially. There is Beef and Vegetarian option. The stuffed cabbage also available in Beef or Vegetarian option and Beef Stroganoff may be substituted. Get there before 4 as it tends to fill up fast and there are no reservations available and it is open late. Wonderful for out of town folk for traditional Ukrainian comfort food!!

I was so excited to check this place out- hit it for breakfast and lunch. The service was spectacular and speedy, the space is very cool and the vibe inside is great, fun and chatty. I immediately trust any business that has complementary jam packets on the table. Breakfast was excellent, their French toast and blintzes were stunners but their blueberry pancakes might've been my favorite. The dinner (that I forgot to photograph) highlights were their vegetarian pierogis and the INCREDIBLE STUFFED CABBAGE with the best mushroom gravy would have taken the Veselka crown if not for the honey cake, which was perfect in every sense of the word. Not too sweet, great depth of flavor and texture. I'd never had it before and I loved it immediately- in fact that sentiment applies to this wonderful establishment as a whole.

Listen, this place is legendary for a reason. If you grew up here, or you’re a transplant with Slavic tastes, you’ve probably been here many times. The prices have gone up but that is the way of things. It’s a good get together with friends from time to time. Everything is good but the pierogies and borscht. At least your first time. Just make sure you show up with your whole party!

I never come to NYC without a visit to Veselka. I am not being dramatic when I say I dream about their pierogies. This place is ALWAYS busy so be prepared to wait in line. However they turn the tables pretty fast and yet you never feel rushed. That’s an art form in itself. I’ve been coming here for years and I see the same people each time. It’s testament to their community and the people who make the restaurant great. One idea which would make this restaurant perfect. Pierogi making classes! I would be the first to sign up.

A bit pricey but the food tastes good. I like the flavoring of the borsh, the stuffing of pierogies, the dense texture of the cakes. I had the vegetarian plate delux, and it did come with tons of grain which I couldn't finish and packed. Tis my 2nd visit.

Excellent Pierogi, stuffed cabbage and Borscht. Short wait at 2p (20minutes) but main lunch crowd left. Ordered and in less than 7 minutes the meal came 😋❣️🎉 worth the wait. No rushing as I finished my 20oz glass of Orolon (Ukrainian beer).

I tried their Chicken Paprikash (braised chicken over egg noodles) and was surprised by how much I liked it. The chicken was well-cooked, the flavour of the sauce was delicious, and the braised chicken went well with the egg noodles. The portion size was just right and the food was good value ($21 for the main dish as well as a side of your choosing). The service was efficient, although they did mix up a few of our dishes. Would love to come back and try some of their other dishes.

Food was ok (had beef strog, potatoes pancake, and some perogies) but service was terrible. Doubled charged for egg noodles when I mentioned I wanted them with the beef strog to-go bc online menu didn't mention it came with it and came with two sides, wouldn't take off receipt after I already handed them credit card for to-go order. To make even better, guy said that happens a lot, but said nothing to this when I mentioned this as one of my two side on the phone. Not worth bothering with for the service alone.

The atmosphere is lively and there are nice Ukrainian paintings around on the walls.

what a great ambiance dining in or out, staff are friendly very busy! the pierogies preferred the goat cheese with lots of delish caramelized onions with sour cream and apple sauce - WHAT A TREAT! If you're up for a coffee pair their moist perfectly baked poppy seed pound cake. Ordered a delicious Thanksgiving meal for 3 including my 96 year old Ukrainian Aunt. It was fabulous - moist turkey, delicious mashed potatoes and stuffing, pearl onions, cranberry relish, sweet potato and marshmallow pirogi, scrumptious butternut squash soup and apple and pumpkin pie. What more could you want. Everything was packaged beautifully. We pulled up and the order was ready and off we went to my aunt's apartment. Instant magic. Thank you Veselka staff. Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Veselka is nice restaurant in down town east Manhattan. Lot of space to seat inside and outside. Don't worry if you see line, it goes fast, and your food they will prepare very fast too. They got Polish-American food, good breakfast menu and very friendly staff. Veselka is not expensive restaurant. I can suggest to try combo with few different style of polish perogi to understand what is polish authentic food. Most of the customers is a young local people..

I have been here several times before. The desserts must be sprinkled with crack because I just craved for more and more. I found the ambiance to be very charming. Satisfactory experience, will come again.

Authentic Ukrainian food at a classic New York style restaurant. Most of the waiters are students from nearby schools such as New York University, so they are really friendly, helpful and efficient (and well deserved for a good tip!) Their soups are especially good, e.g. their borscht and the cucumber soup. Their offer a combo menu which has a smaller portion of a main dish plus a soup of your choice.

Tasty, good service, solid pierogi! I preferred the beef over the spinach and goat cheese. Wish I had some hot sauce, could have used a bit of a kick.

Came in on a early dinner weekday. It was like a private restaurant for a good hour lol. Our waitress was polite and friendly. We ordered Chicken Samosa, Lamb Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Basmati Rice, and Garlic Naan. Checked in on Yelp for 10% off. Total was ~$47 with tax.

Want to impress someone? Your boss, your new business partner, important clients, that fashion model you had a conversation with, you can invite actors to royalties here and they will be in for a treat. As long as they don't have dietary requirements ask them: "Have you been to Veselka?” If they are Ukrainian the better! I have to try Ukrainian delicacy in NYC. They have a good community here. It happens that this place have a good rating I want to try it. I had tried it in Vancouver, I want to try what New York has to offer! You will be served by mostly young beautiful people. I love the way my server say 'Enjoy!" with a little bow after every serving. I started with a Watermelon Lemonade. Then their $6 Ukrainian Borscht and wow that's the best tasting food I had. It got meat, vegetables, nice slightly thick stock, add a little sour cream and your in for a surprise it'll turn creamier and gave more sweetness but mild sourness, it's perfect. I ordered their 67th Anniversary bowl which is not on their current menu and opted fried, it's good but there's something missing. It needs to be eaten with fresh greens, I ordered Burrata Salad with Spinach and Fig. These comes as wonderful pair. I ended up my excellent dinner with a Medovik, a very soft layered cake. Right sweetness and got a creamy delicate texture, so nice you can just smashed it with your tounge it burst in your mouth. I smiled with joy, I am more than satisfied! All of this for just over $50 as if I've eaten more than a hundred dollar food. Food at it's finest without making you broke. Food that's soooo good it fills your heart with goodness! That's Veselka! One young Indian youth that passed by brag to his companions, this is a good place to eat, it's delicious! If you had someone praise your food that's outside their traditional palate then you've got the highest praise from a previous guest.

Very cute location, cabbage rolls were only ok though. I really liked the potatoes they made, mashed potatoes and the potato pancake!

They have outdoor seating and some of their seating options have a heater which would probably help in winter, while there is a line for the heated seating options if you don't mind the cold you can seat immediately at the other tables (no heating). We got the fried pierogi and warm apple cider on a cold day. The apple cider certainly helped and while everything was tasty it was a bit pricey for the amount of food that we got.

Nice Ukrainian restaurant featured in The Gossip Girl. We went for dinner on the Christmas Eve. They served a full menu of traditional Ukrainian/ eastern European Christmas dishes. The only downside was that it was extremely cold inside so we couldn’t take out jackets off which was a bit uncomfortable.

A rather spacious place, filled with Ukrainian inspired art. Every table was full, there was a line that moved quite quickly. It appears to be a popular place as packed as it was, but despite being busy service was prompt. The borsch was we close to traditional as I have ever tasted in the USA; it all was very close to home.

I’m not sure about other Americans but stroganoff has always been a comfort dish for my family and the Veselka stroganoff hits the spot perfectly. We couldn’t decide between the cold or hot borscht so we got both and I recommend you do the same because they are different enough to warrant the second bowl and both are delicious. Pierogi - delicious, as expected. We sat outside but the decor both outside and in is really nice and it feels good to celebrate Ukrainian-American heritage given current events. Слава Україні!
