It is an amazing stay for people that really just need a bed for the night in the middle of New York. We stayed for a week and first of all the location is unbeatable. Right next to central park and even in a 20 minutes walk distance to time square. I absolutely loved the immense gym. Alone for the gym I gotta give five stars. Be aware that the rooms are quite small and there is no fridge or anything like that. The public bathroom was fine.

I thought this might be a decent place, but not so. Worst parts were the bunks were weak and squeaky. Forget about having someone sleep on the top bunk. So much squeak and movement, you won't get any sleep. At first it looked clean, but as day turned to night the roaches came out in large numbers. We bought spray to survive the night, but they overcame the chemical. They were on the walls, the floor, the closet. It also became very noisy in the hallways. We ended up leaving in the middle of the night to find something, anything, cleaner and more comfortable. I will say the shared bathroom was at least fairly clean and warm for winter if you wanted to chance taking a shower. I thought the price was good, but after finding a Holiday Inn for $40 cheaper a night, I was mad at myself for not searching and choosing something better before booking this place. Not sure the roach problem can be solved. Otherwise, the staff was friendly.

I stayed at West Side YMCA for 4 nights to explore NYC. The location is great because it is right in the middle of Manhattan and close to Central Park. For a mandatory 10$ p/d fee they offer tons of sports facilities which are great but not necessary for many people. The prison-like bunk bedrooms were not great. There is no sink, the room was not clean and it stank. The bathroom was awful. You share 3 toilets and 3 showers with +40 rooms. On our floor, there was also zero privacy in the showers. The shower doors were covered with frosted window film that was partially torn off. Everyone who walked in could see you showering, nice. The staff was polite and helpful. I paid about $60 a night which seems a bit much for what you get. But then again, you're in New York.

It's a 1 star hostel and it deserves a 1 star review. I only stayed two nights, but if my stay had been longer I would have tried to look for a better place. Definitely not coming back. Pros: Location, price and schedule Right by central park, walking distance to Broadway theaters. Excellent location Price is very affordable relative to other accommodations in the area. Reception was open very late at night when we arrived which was convenient and check out is simple by dropping off the room keys in a box at any time. Cons: It's dirty, smelly, uncomfortable, and not ventilated. The bathrooms were clean, but we saw one cockroach in the room and that means there may be many more hiding or sleeping with us which was very disturbing and stressful. The hallways smell of tobacco smoke and also of marijuana. It always smells, because there are no windows in the hallways. The bed is very uncomfortable, expected to be so, because of the price, but still, you should know you can feel the springs on your back.

This place is very cheap but it's basically like a hostel. The rooms are very bare bones but there was no bed bugs and it was clean! The staff was as helpful as they could be but I found them less than enthusiastic. Which is okay I guess but you're living work in one of the greatest cities on the planet I would think you might realize that and pump up your enthusiasm. If I worked in New York City I sure would. I will probably stay here again with my whole family in one of the rooms with two bunk beds. It's a good enough value especially given the high price of hotel rooms currently in New York City.

Very affordable and in a great location, right by the Central Park! Rooms are sufficiently spacious, have its own mini freezer and safe. Bathrooms are clean and elevators are fast. You can also use their gym. Management is very courteous and will try his best to accommodate you nicely (special mention to Mr. Marin's very affable and professional persona). You can have two keycards if staying in two, don't forget to ask if you want more freedom of movement. The only downside is the luggage storing man, a rude man that doesn't abide by YMCA's cordiality standards, but don't let him ruin your experience.

This is hard to review. From one side it has a very good location and it feels very safe. But the hallways and rooms feel very claustrophobic. There was a permanent wet smell on the hallways, but not on the rooms, that have both a heater and an AC. The shared bathrooms and showers were kept clean daily which was appreciated, it felt good to use them. On the other side the rooms are not sound isolated, you'll listen to everyone slamming their doors, talking and more. Glad I was there just for a weekend and it did what I wanted out of it, a place to crash at night. But I wouldn't recommend it for anything else.

I was out sightseeing from sunup to sundown, so in that sense, staying here was fine. It was a place to crash. The bed was pretty comfortable and I slept well. Hallways felt quiet and clean. Some staff were friendly and kind, others less so. And of course, the location is hard to beat. It’s the bathrooms that will keep me from coming back. Each floor has two bathrooms for everyone to use. The one I used featured three toilet stalls, three sinks and three showers. At one point, two of the three toilets were clogged for the whole day, and the stall door for the third one would not close properly. One of the three sinks did not function. And two of the three showers did not have hot water. Also, the outer door to this bathroom was slightly broken and could not close all the way. It offered a view straight to the showers from the hallway. Since the showers just have semi-opaque curtains for privacy, guests had to dress and undress very strategically. So yeah, at the end of a long day of sightseeing, I don’t need luxury, but I’m tired, and functional, private bathrooms are a basic need. This bathroom was a stressful situation to come back to every evening, and by the end, I was very done. Maybe it’s not that way on every floor. That’s why I’ll be generous and give two stars instead of one… that and the location, the fact that everything else about the experience was “fine,” plus as I said some of the staff were very nice to work with. I know it’s rock-bottom cheap and you get what you pay for, but the money I saved wouldn’t be worth it to me a second time. Save a couple more bucks and get yourself a basic hotel room with a private bath. There are affordable enough options right in this same neighborhood.

I am so excited to stay at the YMCA!! our room is fine, bedding is... plastic covered pillows and sheets that come off the corners. but it's fun here. I feel like I'm in a college dorm with a roommate. the bathrooms are single stall so still private enough to feel comfortable, you just have to walk down the hall to get to the bathroom from the hostel room. access to central park, Columbus circle metro and Carnegie hall can't be beat especially for this price! we feel safe and it's clean enough. those were my main concerns and it's a good place to stay.

As a hotel it wasn't the best. Stuff isn't so friendly and the facilities look old. The room wasn't clean. We found hair on out pillows and the floor was dusty. Fortunately the air conditioner was working. We asked for an extra towel and a couple of pillows and they were never delivered. The showers were almost clean, if you consider the number of people using them. All in all it's what you get for what you pay. The best think is it's location. It's a few steps near Central Park

Location is excellent. Several good restaurants within walking distance. The room were tiny, dingy and my "clean" sheets had lots of hair on them. The women's bathroom was NEVER closed. The floor was co-ed. So with the bathroom door open, men could see in. I told an assistant manager, Mitchell, about the mold in the shower and the mold was still in the same shower, when I left. If you decide to stay at this Y, bring a blanket, a pillow case, a towel, ear plugs and something to wear in the shower. One night there was no security at the front desk. The door was locked by 7:00 pm.

Let's face it, if you are coming to New York - hotel is the place where you spend the least time. However, if, as in my case, you encounter heavy rain, West Side YMCA has a pool and gym facilities where you can spend your spare time. The rooms may be small, but they are sufficient; bathrooms clean; staff very nice and helpful. And the location - the best for exploring the city! Value for money - I'm satisfied!

Such a good deal for the membership! Cheaper than even basic gyms in the area, with super spacious workout facilities in a historic building. The tile work surrounding both the lap pool and the small pool is gorgeous, and the whole building has wonderful character. I love my yoga classes (included in membership) with Jorge, who is excellent. The staff are helpful and friendly.

The photos on their website have little to do with reality and probably date from a time before the opening. The entire floor smelled unpleasantly of strong, industrial chemical cleaner, there were only 3 toilets for everyone (these were in a miserable state as a result), the other toilets were broken. Similarly with the showers... only three worked, although that just meant that the water flowed... in addition, the privacy screen was partially torn off and so there was no privacy at all. The room seemed to have been randomly thrown together with furniture of the lowest quality. Everything wobbled, was loose or didn't work at all. The air conditioning was running at full blast with a lot of noise, but it was hardly effective. Many doors were jammed and therefore had to be thrown into the lock by the guests with additional effort, plus walls like they were made of cardboard and it was impossible to get any rest at night. The staff are not at all interested in such things. I spent one night there and then moved to a hotel in Times Square, which only cost slightly more. However, I was stuck with my costs for the YMCA. Never again YMCA in Manhattan.

Check-in was smooth and the receptionist was really kind. Our double bunk room looked pretty scary upon entry, but was actually surprisingly comfortable and quiet. Nice working AC and clean showers with towels provided. Access to the gym/pool was also included ($10 mandatory fee). Great location right next to Central Park and within walking distance to just about everything. Would stay again!

I have stayed here several times over the past 10 years, but his may have been my last time. My daughter and I stay here because it is cheap and it is safe, plus in a great location for subways and buses. But his time it was noisy and not clean. I don't expect 5 star quality and I don't expect the bathrooms to be cleaned after each use, but I do think things that are broken should be fixed and there should be hot water in every sink and shower. Also, there needs to be signs reminding visitors about quiet hours, not slamming doors all night and early morning, wiping out sinks from shaving and hair in the shared bathrooms.... people don't seem to have any courtesy or consideration for anyone these days. I also don't expect to have to shake out my socks from just walking across the room... It just didn't seem clean this time. It is cheap, and it is safe. That's the best I can say about it.

I booked a single room for a weekend, and it was exactly what I was expecting. Very basic room, clean linens, cold AC. I was close to the bathroom so that was nice, I made a point to shower later at night when it wasn't so crowded and it worked out for me. Security was pleasant, you have to scan your key card to get in the building and again at the security desk. They'll hold luggage for $4/bag if you get there super early like I did and can't check in yet. Only thing I'd recommend is to bring your own pillow if you need any kind of support for sleep. I almost did and wish I had, the pillows are super tiny and don't do much. But you get what you paid for, the location can't be beat. I'll definitely stay here again.

As others said, you get what you pay for. I wouldn't advise you to stay more than one night. I do understand people comparing the place to prison, it definitely looks like it. The rooms are super small, beds are loud, the bathroom is small (no place for your stuff) and offer no privacy (the shower glass is pretty much see through). The only good point is really the location.

Visited NY for a week from France and stayed in here. They offer a good price-value for Manhattan, to be honest. Pros: astonishing location, individual rooms, affordable prices, great gym premises, very safe area and hostel. Cons: not-so-friendly staff, not-so-clean bedrooms (some of them are stinky), very uncomfy bunk beds, and not-so-clean shared bathrooms. If you're visiting New York and will spend most of your day walking and sightseeing, this is a great, very affordable option just to go to sleep to.

Positive things: excellent location, if you speak English the deal will be easy for both of you , the bathrooms are not as dirty as some people say. Negative things: the rooms are very old, need of urgent remodeling and the cleaning of the rooms was non-existent. In the week I stayed, they did not even bring me a change of sheets or towels.

The best location for a Hostel. Small rooms, felt safe, nice beds, small small bathrooms, they give you a towel/soap/sheets. It’s more of a place to stay that’s close to the subway, Central Park, and midtown but there is not any social aspect and nothing else besides the rooms and bathroom. Highly recommend they put hooks in the shower.

You pay for what you get — I went with a group this past week and we stayed in two-person rooms with bunks. There were shared restrooms on the floor, so it felt more like a hostel. The bathrooms were generally clean, but don’t forget to bring shower shoes. Towels are small and sheets are scratchy, so bring your own linens if you are concerned about this. I did see a roach in one of the bathrooms, so be warned. The rooms get VERY hot, so either bring a fan or try and leave your AC on all day. The rooms are loud as well; the bunks creak and the pipes make noises, and the walls are thin so you can hear everything in the hallways. I would suggest bringing a noise machine or earplugs. The staff was generally friendly, and there is a vending machine on the first floor and a space to workout on the third floor for vaccinated guests. Masks are required in the lobby and hallways. It is in a good location, so I would suggest staying here if you don’t want to spend a lot of money but want to be close to Times Square.

Stayed here for one night and booked because it was cheap and needed a place to stay after a long haul flight. The room was very worn and could've used a deep cleaning. You were given an access code for showers/bathroom. This was the first hotel I've stayed where I needed to list an emergency contact. Location was great and the Columbus circle subway station is nearby. I checked out on Thanksgiving day and the Macy's Day Parade route is one street over.

The only thing to highlight is the location, but it is a very neglected hostel with zero care for the well-being and rest of the guests. I stayed in a private room, the mattress is very thin and sagging, the cleaning was very poor, the room was small, the minibar (which was very appreciated) made a lot of noise. Cold comes in through the opening of the old air conditioner, I don't know what they do in the middle of winter, I was in autumn, two days ago. The shared bathrooms are fairly clean but many are missing paper hand towels, or you are left with the handle in your hand, or some have missing or broken hangers. The worst thing of all is that people come in shouting at all hours (I was on the 12th floor, where they are all private rooms, I don't even want to think that the shrink will be the shared rooms). You don't rest well, even at 2 am the guests are distracted and shout. Then at midnight between 8 and 9 the cleaning people start knocking loudly on each door asking if you are sleeping (which of course they interrupt). No consideration for rest, very rude both other guests and hotel workers. There are a few hours between 4 and 5 AM where silence reigns. Bad experience to rest.

Honestly I was worried about the reviews... But I had a positive stay. I was in 12th floor deluxe bunk room with semi private bathroom. Can't complain. Beds were comfortable enough except they don't change the sheets (it's a little gross). Towels were smelling great at least. Bathrooms always had soap and toilet paper. Location is AWESOME (So close to Central Park). You can walk to Times Square (20min) or take a train (10min). Also I'd like to thank the girl with glasses from the night shift (forgot to ask her name) she was very kind to me ! ❤️

The staff is super friendly, the rooms are small but definitely a good value for the price. The location is the best thing about this facility. You have everything nearby. You can literally walk to all the great places in Manhattan. Central, Hudson River, subway Stations, Lincoln Center and the list goes on and on. I had a great experience

Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were tiny but value for the price. The sheets came off the bed too much so it was an uncomfortable sleep every night. The bathrooms were down the hall and the showers were very uncomfortable to be In as they couldn’t be locked and there was a foster glass so you could kind of see in. My room was right by the elevators and people continuously knocked on the door throughout the night. However everything was clean

I stayed at YMCA for 10 nights. The location can't get any better. It is 5 min walk from 59th str. The deluxe room has a bathroom and a toilet just across the room. It was always available in early mornings and late evenings and clean. The room itself was very basic but it had a TV and a small fridge. The sheets were very clean, and it had everything one needed to crash for the night. Overall, if you are searching for something basic for a fair price, it is the perfect place.

An affordable place to stay near times square and central park. Nonetheless, the place is outdated and you have to share the bathroom with other people. They will store your luggage for 4$ each bag, but only until 7pm. If you need to leave to the airport later than this, don’t count with keeping your luggage in here. We had to take ours to a musical since they would not make an exception.

I enjoy this YMCA because the prices I have paid so far for 2021 are under $100.00 Once 95. When I booked an hour before The second 88. 00 per night And I got it for 2 nights each! Its clean quiet and I could use the 2 pools and gym with that price. I purchased one of their silicone swim caps for 10.00 and they let you know that another store sells them too but I was not interested in the name of the store Kevin Marin mentioned. This employee is professional, kind and courteous. The room came with a card key and a 3 digit code to use the showers and toilets. You could rent rooms with those facilities also I believe but my budget was not that good to even inquire. The room has a single bed sturdy and comfortable, a comfy comforter, air conditioner and TV both have remote controls. A window, adjustable louvered blinds, a safe which I never used. Door with strong sturdy lock and chain. A lg desk and a door less closed. Mine had one hanger only and I used rod too. A clean plastic garbage can with a new clean garbage bag in it. The location is super! Its located on West 63 st between Central Park West and Broadway. At the corner of B/Way there is a large clean fruit and vegetable stand where you could purchase any type of fruits. There are the silver trucks selling Halal food and Mexican food. But the best of all is the Time Warner building 4 short blocks away on the opposite side where there is a giant Whole foods Market inside with 2 escalators! One for going down and another going up, ck out the view, the ambience is an experience to behold. Now the varieties of well prepared gourmet dishes cold and hot to purchase in any size each and afford healthy tasty meals, plus you could go purchase your variety if coffees and teas and if you have finished shopping they will then check out your groceries too at that particular counter! If not check out always have several lines to cash out and a self service line. After cashing out you could get your utensils on the left and napkins and proceed to eat some or all if your food right in the eating area on their white marble tables. Use their toilets which are clean. Save money with a variety of sm dishes and pay zero tip. Take the rest if your food back to the Y. And watch TV, read, write, go to the gym or pool and eat some more food while watching TV. There is a plug to charge up your phone and laptop. Only 1 so when one is charged use another.

I did not come here to use it as a hotel, so I can't say anything about it in that regard. I also have never used the pool here. However, I can say that I have had lovely experiences with staff members while here to use the squash courts upstairs and the gym. There are many things to do here and sign up for; yoga, zumba, spin classes, among many others. You can also get private lessons for things like squash. I have also been here for theater workshops (that unfortunately don't exist anymore, but were great options if your child was interested in theater) where the staff was also very helpful in helping me get around and look for the rehearsal space. I have had great experiences here, but I can't give it the full five stars because I don't know about the hotel portion of the YMCA, which is what many of these reviews are on. Thank you.

Very bad value for money. The only reason people book this place is probably the location. My dilapidated room, equipped with an “en-suite bath”, resembled more like a prison cell with a moldy, smelly 1960s shower. Tiles were coming off the wall, there was hair everywhere and the entire room only had one working socket. So I had to choose whether to charge my phone, keep the mini fridge running (which I didn’t use, because it smelled as if someone had stored a corpse in there) or plug in the nightstand lamp.

I stayed at the hotel part of this YMCA and it was pretty darn good for what it cost. Half a block from Central Park for 1/3 of the cost of other hotels in the area. My only complaints are that the rooms and building was hot. We went in December and had the AC on to cool down the room, my pop up fan was a lifesaver. Also to get into the building you need a card, which is safe and awesome, but when we were checking in we didn’t see a door bell or anything so we had to wait for someone to walk out to get in to check in and get our cards.

It's a good place to stay because it's in Manhattan and right across central park. Other than that reason, I didn't really like it. The bed is squeaky, the bathrooms are shared, and the rooms feel like a jail cell 😅 But if you don't mind that at all then it's good! We just used it to sleep and was touring NYC during the day :)

Super overpriced (just like everything in manhattan). We booked a room with double bed and we ended up getting a room with a bunk bed and a twin bed and they did not offer any discount for the inconvenience. The staff was friendly. Location is great, a few minutes away from Times Square by foot.

Cheap, but not worth it. Deal breaker for me was there is the shared showers don't get hot. They get medium temperature, but I need hot water to sleep. Also, your bed will be super cheap, the floor is hard and cold, and the elevator breaks frequently which makes it super hard to get up and down the stairs.

Was it fun to stay at the YMCA? Well for the price it was worth it. No frills attached. I went there to enjoy New York and just needed a place to crash. The toilets kind of sucked and i found the whole experience stressful. The room was small but clean . I doubt i will make it back to NYC which is a shame because i enjoyed my time there.

I came here yesterday to use the gym. I am a member of the ymca and I frequently use their gyms in boston and other parts of the country to workout and get these gainz. However, upon entering and scanning my gym card, the security guard said I wasn’t allowed in because of apparent “covid” restrictions. This makes no sense. I’m vaccinated, won’t fight people if they want me to wear a mask, and I pay for the YMCA membership which is supposed to let me use their facilities around the country. I asked to speak to someone and the guard refused. I asked to buy a day pass, but was refused and shunned away. I understand that it is not his fault, but come on, working out it something that improves the health and health is what we need in this country during these unprecedented times. New York, Boston, and a bunch of other places have to get themselves together. The world can’t stay like this forever.

The room is basic and that's not all that bad. Staff is courteous and kind and respectful and knowledgeable. You get WiFi, AC, and cable. If you're in NYC for fun or business you can't go wrong choosing the YMCA. This is 50 yards away from the Lincoln Center fountain.

Amazing price for the location, rooms aren’t anything special but what can you expect when you’re right by Central Park. The rooms have everything you need, feel safe and you can get a good nights sleep. Plus you get access to the gym/pool/sauna etc which is a bonus. Only thing that’s lacking is a kitchen space but overall I rated it.

This hostel is great if you stay a few nights in NY and are looking for "affordable" housing options in Manhattan. The rooms were not so small, with enough space for two persons and concerning the bathrooms, even though they're not the cleanest it is widely acceptable. The location just across Central Park is amazing, we enjoyed very much our stay there! We were two girls and felt really safe there !

The hotel is nice and very well located. But staff is horrible. I have never been in a hotel where the staff is less friendly. They always make you feel like you're bothering them. You can't ask for help or advice because their answer is always "Can't help you" while playing with cellphone. Generally people who work in hospitality are very hospitable, generous and friendly. It is not the case. They just want time to pass and finish their shift. Very bad employees. And without a competent manager to make them to do their job.

What’s crazy about the service in this YMCA is that the same guard that Greechie is the same guard that will hand you your towels in your pillow. Not worth the money they’re charging. Sad great staff what little they have to work with. Watch out for your safety as well not a safe location.

Good value for money. Single room, very small but with fresh sheets, towel and air-condition. Air-condition was a bit noisy, but not a problem with ear plugs. Great location! Easy to check-in and check-out. Clean shared bathrooms.

Great facility, still haven't explored it all. Might need to clip some locks in the locker room and update some minor things but they offer so much and are definitely worth a visit. The people at the membership desk are extremely helpful.

We can only recommend this hostel. Directly next to the central park. Subwaystation and target nearby. (Would definitely recommend strolling on Columbus Street.) The room was small but with a view on Central Park! You can use the gym and pool (only with a cap) on the 4th floor. There is unfortunately not kitchen. But you can store your bags after checking out (4$ each, 7am-7pm).

So, here's the thing... $160 a night won't get you much in upper Manhattan, but it'll get you a clean bed and a place to shower. If you plan to spend a lot of time relaxing in your room, DON'T STAY HERE. But, if you're going to do all the things and need a place to crash before continuing your journey, it's the best deal you're going to find. The staff is friendly and helpful too.

It's a hostel. Cheap rooms, Great location ! There is a shared bathroom in the hall. Rooms are very tiny with bunk beds. The sheets were clean, but the pillows had no pillow cases. The TV in our room didn't work, but the A/C did, so we didn't mind. It was fine for the price. Within walking distance to everything in Manhatten ! Close to Central Park. Lots of overseas tourists. I loved the diversity of people.

My son attends swimming classes here with GiGi level B class. We’re happy with his teacher and as a plus we love the heated pool. I will say the family swim changing room is very small and the hot water in the showers typically doesn’t work well. Other than that we can’t complain it’s a good experience.

Great place to spend your time in NY. The rooms are pretty basic, and in need of some basic repairs, but the location and price, as well as access to the pool, sauna, gym and many more facilities make up for this in spades! The service is very helpful and nice, rooms and toilets are clean, and the place has good security. If your goal is not to spend your time (and money) in a fancy hotel instead of going out and actually discovering New York, than I can highly recommend this place.

It got really hot at night, even though it was winter time. That's why I'm giving it three stars. Everything else was great. It was clean and the check-in process was easy, the checkout process was even easier. My friend said the room looked like a prison though. So just be prepared.

I am not quite sure why this is called hotel. In Europe it would be a hostel — as toilet and shower are shared with what feels like 100 other people. I stayed here 2 nights in November 2019 for ~250€ total. The room was dated and dirty. Staying there was traumatic. I gave it 2 stars only because of location. Price-quality relation is inhumane

Check in process was long and a little cumbersome but the staff was friendly. If you arrive right at 3 there will be a very long line, I was told this happens every day. Private room was sparse but better than I expected. Don't expect frills, but you get what you pay for (by NYC standards anyway). Location was convenient for me to get to JFK Airport when I checked out, about an hour by subway. Would stay again.

Not bad for a 1 star hotel, definitely good for young people traveling in groups to NY, 2 things btw : 1. The beds should not be on wheels or if they are they should have breaks. They are very unstable on just wheels. 2. Room doors should have weather stripping for sound insulation. Lots of noise from the corridor in the shared spaces come into private rooms.
