I've visited Newcastle on Saturday 15 July 2023 with my friend and stayed one night here. The location is great, close to everything and right near Newcastle beach. Light rail to Newcastle Interchange is just around the corner from the hotel. The room were good for the price, clean and tidy, has big lockers for storing your bags. The restroom was just okay and could be cleaner if possible. Customer service was good. The lounge room is nice with plenty of sofas, books, and entertainment. Will definitely come back here next time whenever I come back to visit Newcastle.

Great location, close to beach, pubs, cafes and restaurants in the trendy east end of Newcastle— parking available — 2minute walk to the Newcastle Lightrail station. Spacious clean, friendly staff— affordable rates. Popular with travellers. Iconic building

Had an incredible stay at Newcastle YHA! Damien and Gordon from reception helped make the trip even better, especially when we had a situation with a lost jumper!

Rambling youth hostel only metres away from Newcastle main beach. Great location inside a beautiful historic building.

Hostel has a homily and relaxed vibe. Bathrooms are nice and clean and has enough showers for more than two to shower at same time. Kitchen is big and has everything you need plus chill music on the speakers. Comfy beds, you get both a duvet and blanket. Wifi doesnt just work, I used it on three different devices at the same time. It has a very nice courtyard and is less than 5 minute walk to the beach.

Excellent, inexpensive place to stay. It's close to the beach, and there is parking right out the front

Travelled with family in Oct 2022. Located near to the beach. Rooms are a bit small, but clean and maintained well. Common kitchen has all essential equipments like gas stove, oven, vessels, refrigerator, etc. Shared bathrooms were clean and staff was very friendly. Has a few games like chess, snooker and the overall ambience of common areas was nice. What could have been better? Reception was closed from 2 to 3 pm, unfortunately we reached just a few minutes past 2 pm and had to wait till 3 pm. No private parking available, you can park in the street just outside (without having to pay fees just on holidays). Oil heater was not powerful enough to heat the room. Would have struggled on a winter night.

I’ve done 4 hostels since I’ve been in Australia , so YHA is by far the best one , if we come to quality /price kind staff , good equipment’s condition , the place is well laid out , spacious and especially clean ,the room (4p) as well as the common spaces the only negative point is the car parking the free one closest is around 300m and it’s often busy , however you are like 200m walk from the beach, anyway nice place generally.

Get what you pay for. This hostel is a unique one. For the type of place it is (very old building, with interior embracing that) it is good for providing things to do. At check-in it was nice to be told about the different activities and places to see in the area and a lot of the walls are full of things to do and places to see which is great. They have a pool table, table tennis, table football, dart board, TVs etc to keep you entertained on site and also offer free surfboard hire, free bike hire and there’s a chest full of different balls you can take out. So the hostel offers a lot in this sense. However this hostel is rather basic and old. Only 1 toilet for each gender on the ground floor where there are 6 bedrooms and by the stairs for the kitchen so you have to wait a long time to use the bathroom. Not the cleanest place in the rooms or the showers but the worst part is the kitchen. I picked up a chopping board that was swarmed with ants! There are bugs crawling from under the microwave and on the floor. It is grim! So just make sure you clean all utensils and cooking area yourself before you prepare any food! I do like that there is a basket for any free food where people won’t use it all and want to give it away etc. this place facilitates this well to reduce food waste which I like. Ultimately, aside from bracing yourself for lower standards of living for a bit and the grim kitchen, my stay here has been pretty good. Enjoyed all that was on offer and seen more in Newcastle than I ever realised I would due to their helpful info.

Not the most pleasant experience ever. The male 5 dorm didn’t even have lockers for everyone, not enough space overall. (Girls room was bigger with enough lockers.) Some guests in the hostel were very loud, sitting in groups and blasting music all over the common areas & drinking until late at night so you couldn’t really sit there (+this was the only area with free WiFi…) Waking up in the morning we found beer bottles everywhere. On top of that someone stole the lids of our stainless steel lunch boxes out of our closed bag in the kitchen (which isn’t monitored so be careful). We just appreciate a place where everyone can feel comfortable and this wasn’t the case.

Nice size rooms with lockers and PowerPoint inside. Unfortunately my PowerPoint was disconnected and over that my three days day they couldn’t seem to get it fixed so I had to go downstairs to the kitchen to charge up. Huge kitchen and dining area. One street back from the beach with time to parking in front. Lots of good pubs and cafes around the block.

Beautiful building. Fireplace. Free bicycles and surfboards. Not ON the beach but one block up. Little park across the street next to the tram stop, just wonderful.

Nice looking hostel on a great location, walking distance from the beach/coastal walk etc. Rooms are old but beds are okay. Only thing is that the rooms are very noisy. Literally every conversation in the room next doors can be followed. Also our windows were constantly being attacked by lots of pigeons. I noticed two nests right besides our windows. As soon as the sun was rising it sounded like they were actually trying to get into our room which messed up our sleep unfortunately. Not many power plugs in our room. I fortunately found one next to my bed but my friend had to charge her phone close to the tv.

Who ever is on night shift Wednesday 20th September is outrageous. I’m appalled. I’ve stayed here a few time without a problem and really like to stay here it’s my go to place because I absolutely love it. But let me get to my point right now.!!!! I’ve called and book and sorted everything out over the phone but when I arrived they told me I’m not allowed to stay there called me a gronk and told me I don’t look like a good person to stay here and they don’t trust us. They won’t have me there because of my appearance. I’m absolutely shocked I’m so disappointed and discussed at the appalling staff member put on shift tonight. I’ve got left on the street with my younger siblings because I called and booked last minute because I had nowhere else to go I don’t have the money and this was my best option I can’t go anywhere else I want that staff member spoke to because we are left on the streets with out and roof over our head because of judgemental staff

What a great week we spent at YHA Newcastle Beach. Free wine and cheese Tuesday was a lovely icebreaker and a great way to meet fellow guests. Damien is very friendly, our room U2 was perfect (on the corner ocean views) and being right next to the beach was so good for the soul.

Fabulous old historic building. We had a private room for 2 with a double bed and 2 bunk beds. Miela who checked us in was bright, friendly & welcoming. We would definitely stay there again.

In a great spot over all, and the staff were friendly enough, the dorms were alright, but the linen was a bit musty smelling and I definitely collected a bed bug or 2 on the way out, wasn’t cool

While this place is not the Ritz, it's got everything you need, and it's pretty comfortable. The staff were great, and there were some nightly activities laid on. You could also borrow bikes and surf boards. The only downside for us was that we were right at one end of the building, and there was only one male bathroom on our floor right at the other end. Quite a way and not ideal during the night.

I’ve stayed here many time and always had a great experience. Fab location, clean, welcoming. The common room and kitchen areas are very easy to use. Cheap street parking available close. Usually come by light rail 150m away. The Estabar caf, one of my faves is also 100m away. It had building works last time I was there in Oct. One of the best features of course is the coastal walk. From hostel to the lighthouse of south to Merewether beach.

Yet another YHA hostel I visited. This one is nothing to compare to the Sydney's one. I saw how the staff is treating the bedlinen and blankets, they don't take it to the washing room, instead they just make the bed again with same bedlinen. I'm not picky, but this is TOO much. Also I saw some bugs on the carpet. Sorry, the locations is perfect and the lounge as well, but I have to be honest.

Well located, by the beach, free surfboards and bikes to use. Walking distance from Woolies and bus stops nearby. The rooms are very differents from one to another, can have a balcony and unlighted room or the exact opposite with darks 4 dorm rooms. Common area is fantastic : big and well equipped (loads of couches, pool table, TV, WIFI...) Mostly quiet, will be busy on tuesdays, thursdays and saturday nights due to special events (BBQ, wine & cheese nights) Usually very clean in general. This is one of the best hostels I have lived in over Australia.

The best hostel we've been in! Staff are friendly and helpful. So easy to make friends. Great facilities (kitchen, free DVDs, pool table etc) and cool free stuff including surfboard rent, wine/cheese night. I would 100% recommend!

Absolutely loved staying here, great facilities, friendly people, I can be socially awkward, and Andy went above and beyond to make sure I was included in things! Not only enjoyed staying here, excited for a reason to come back!

The worst YHA I've stayed at - so still much better then most Australian Hostels. My main gripes are with it's management, I was staying over Christmas, being a hostel hosting many people who are abroad and who cannot spend Christmas with family, you would think they would put on a Christmas event. I was feeling pretty low at the prospect of my first Christmas away from home. Not only did they not, but management were completely unsupportive and discouraging when I tried to put on my own. The kitchen is also looking pretty old and tired and there is no oven, only a bench-top toaster oven thing which likes to burn stuff. Some of the bathrooms and the clothes line also needs some maintenance. On to the good, they have free surf boards and bikes you can hire, and Andy is the most amazing volunteer who puts in a huge amount of work for the hostel and does BBQs for the guests.

Classic YHA one street back from the beach - superb location and right near the light rail. Staff very friendly, amazing old building circa 1917. Loves the free wine 🍷 and cheese 🧀 night.

Open and relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff, simple but very tidy and comfortable accommodation. One of the better hostels I've stayed in. Awesomely close to Newcastle Beach too.

Myself and my girlfriend stayed for a week and really enjoyed it. We volunteered for a few days and found the staff we worked with supportive and helpful. We enjoyed the pool table and table tennis a lot and the fire place was nice to sit by. Great location near the beach and near shops/restaurants etc. Bee, Cameron and German guy (sorry forgot his name) were really cool and made our time there memorable. We will be back! V&L.

We had a lovely stay. Staff were all friendly and welcoming. All facilities were great, clean and well stocked. Free bikes and surfboards are great addition though being free, don't expect the best. Overall would highly recommend.

The barbecue was quite nice 😋 People are friendly. But I didn't like the bathrooms as they were just toilets with a sink separated from the showers...

Discriminating rude staff . Was told can only stay for 3 nights at a time and when I asked more questions he went on to say he doesn’t feel comfortable with me and I need to leave . I left . I was respectful and polite and was only asking if I could book more days after the 3 days were up . He clearly didnt like the look of me and was judging soley on that. So tonight I’m sleeping on the street . Thank you yha .

Handy and short walk to the beach and you can see beach from your window. I rent private bedroom. Closed to everywhere and you don’t worry if you back home late

Fantastic common room and great service. The family room we had was basic but you certainly can't complain about the price. I love YHA if you are on a budget.
