by
the
locals,
we
drove
a
good
ways
to
sample
fare
from
a
restaurant
that
boasts
being
95
years
old.
Pompilio's
is
tucked
neatly
into
a
quiet
neighborhood
in
Newport.
The
atmosphere
is
homey,
the
decor
made
to
remind
diners
of
the
Old
Country
with
murals
and
stained
glass.
While
we
were
greeted
by
a
sweet
hostess
with
a
warm
smile,
it
seemed
like
several
minutes
before
we
were
seen
by
our
server.
It
was
long
enough
for
us
to
question
whether
anyone
knew
we
had
been
seated.
Meanwhile,
a
young
man
unceremoniously
dumped
a
basket
of
bread
right
on
the
menu
I
was
reading.
They
have
a
small
wine
list
that
covers
a
range
of
offerings.
Shameless
plug
here
for
my
new
favorite
red,
the
Meiomi
Pinot
Noir.
If
you
know,
you
know.
They
have
some
tasty
descriptions
of
cocktails,
standards
with
a
creative
twist.
Caesar
salad
was
on
point
with
crispy
Romaine
lettuce
and
plenty
of
homemade
croutons.
I
ordered
the
Italian
Sampler,
as
it
was
my
first
visit
and
I
was
undecided.
I
got
a
very
tasty
meatball,
one
cheese
and
one
meat
ravioli,
lasagna,
sausage,
and
eggplant.
Unfortunately
the
entire
dish
was
saturated
in
a
deep,
spicy
hot
red
sauce
that
made
it
difficult
to
distinguish
many
flavors
in
the
items.
I
tucked
in,
but
didn't
finish
the
huge
portion.
I'm
never
too
hard
on
a
place
like
this
on
my
first
visit.
After
all,
I'm
walking
into
their
world.
But
the
food
seemed
old.
Not
just
old
recipe
old,
but
not
fresh
old.
It
was
akin
to
eating
leftovers.
I
hope
this
was
an
off
night
because
I
want
to
go
back
and
sample
some
more
sophisticated
dishes.
The
place
got
loud
and
busy
for
a
Tuesday
night,
so
they
are
pleasing
a
lot
of
people.
The
whole
evening
was
redeemed
with
the
cannoli,
hands
down
the
best
I've
ever
tasted
anywhere.
Creamy
and
just
the
perfect
amount
of
sweetness
in
a
crunchy
shell.
It
was
perfect.
