First time here where I was able to walk around and see the exhibits. Bought the membership as it was cheaper in the long run. Some exhibits were closed for remodeling and due to Covid, but still plenty to see and do. Wasn't very busy on a Wednesday and kiddos had a lot of fun. We were able to see the new baby white Rhino that was born July 11, 2021 and she is super cute. Loved the reptile exhibit as there were a lot of species to see and mostly active. We were able to enjoy the petting zoo with the goats (very friendly). They do not offer feed to feed them, however, they did have brushes available. We were able to ride the train and thoroughly enjoyed the gift shop. Was a perfect way to spend the day and looking forward to our next visit.

I love this zoo. My parents used to bring me here as a child and I have such fond memories of those visits. I still enjoy it now. It's a well designed zoo with basically a single route through all of the exhibits. My wife and I can walk it easily in several hours and grab lunch about halfway through. Compared to the national zoo in DC and the Baltimore zoo I actually prefer this one for both exhibits and size. If you are in the area you should pay it a visit.

We love it here! My kids enjoy it every time we come! They love it so much we had to get a membership. Visiting in the Fall and Spring is a little better than coming in the Summer, not as hot and more action with the animals but we love it either way! Early mornings when they open have been little more lively when it comes to the animals in our experience too but prepare for little bit of a wait as there is usually quite a line, it moves pretty quickly though! I definitely recommend getting your tickets in advance if you can, it helps to cut down wait times!

I have been to many zoos, it is not Omaha or San Diego but as Virginias only zoo it did not disappoint. The day we went was a public holiday and had over 2k visitors but the flow of the park made it feel less congested. Staff were kind and because there was no parking had us park in an employee space. I liked the paved and brick walkways and well made wooden structures. The use of bamboo throughout the park made it beautiful. The zoo also sported lions, giraffes, and rhinos. Near the entrance is a snake for kids to walk on which is nice and there are lots of benches and a huge tree cuts out the sun on hot days. They also had lots of places to eat if you want to spend money. I'm glad there were no pay extra to see animals like in Chicago and other zoos as I think that is a fleecing of Americans. My family will definitely go again.

Lovely zoo. $18 ages 12+, $15 ages 2-11. Lots of parking spaces in the lot. Exhibits are clean and well-kept. Particularly the open giraffe and rhino exhibits were great. We also really enjoyed the reptile area which is near the exit…a lot of interesting things in there that you can get pretty close to. Café (the one opened at the time) was about average, both in food and prices, for what you’d expect for a zoo. ($5 hot dog, $7 chicken tenders, $5 fries, $8 hamburger, $3-5 drinks) All staff members were very nice.

There weren’t many animals outside since it was a hot day, which I understand, so that’s not the reason for my low rating. You can still spot them in the shady areas if you look close enough. My rating is due to the lack of animals at all. Most of the enclosures had nothing in them whatsoever, almost like they were never there in the first place. The ones that did had animals that, quite honestly, appeared depressed, especially the Orangutan in the main enclosure. A lot of the enclosures also seemed far too small for certain animals. There were also animals that usually live in large groups (bison, monkeys, lion and lionesses, etc.) who were all alone in their enclosures. The Orangutans were separated. Two were in a very small viewing area. One of them was sitting near a window inside, staring out at the main enclosure like he wanted to be outside instead. The third Orangutan that was in the main enclosure was just lying on the ground, fiddling with some hay. I’ve never in my life seen Orangutans act like this. They’re usually very lively and happy animals. Other animals looked overheated, but had nowhere to go. I can’t remember what type of bird it was (maybe a toucan) who was on the hilltop area — the poor thing looked miserable and he didn’t seem like he had anywhere to cool off. Quite a few animals looked sick or like they weren’t receiving proper care, especially the Bald Eagle. He was sitting on a perch by himself and his feathers looked absolutely pitiful. The path for the hilltop area was under construction. Once you reached the top, you had to walk all the way back and go around to see the other side. Most of the zoo is filled by play areas or blank space. It feels more like a city park with random animals tossed in at certain points than an actual zoo. It really feels as though this zoo cares more about appearances and being pretty rather than the conservation of the animals that live there. Overall, I wouldn’t return to this zoo for another visit. It’s very lackluster (and, quite frankly, sad) in comparison to other zoos. I also didn’t take very many pictures, which I normally do, since it was so underwhelming.

This is a nice Zoo with a variety of animals for a family or couple to enjoy. The prices for admission are reasonable and I even received a discount for showing my college identity card. There is a cool little train ride that is great for kids and a fountain area near the entrance to cool you off. Some animals were not visible or were out of their exhibits but that was mainly due to the heat.

A long weekend trip to VA Beach and a spare day led me to the zoo. My visit was on a Monday and there were few other guests. Most of the animals were out and active (less the Red Panda) in the sun. $19.00 admission was a bargain. I'm looking forward to a future visit and a 'behind the scenes' activity / tour that you pay extra for and need to book in advance. Great place for kids, adults or seniors. Everywhere is wheel chair accessible. Super clean facility and very kind staff. Limited lunch items to buy there

I had a fun time at the Virginia Zoo! I am a member of the NC Zoo and decided to take advantage of their AZA reciprocal program, so I was able to get 50% off the price of admission to the Virginia Zoo. I attended on a warm, rainy weekday morning, so the zoo had rather low attendance at the time of my visit. It was like having most of the exhibits to myself! The zoo is temporarily without lions (currently winter of '22), but a staff member said a lion should be joining them at some point this year. There is quite a bit of space designated for kids to run around and play, so if you need your little ones to burn off some energy there are dedicated areas for that. Quite a few animals were off exhibit in the Africa section during my visit, but the giraffes, zebras, and rhinos (including the new baby!), were out and about and it was wonderful to watch them roam around their fields. One thing I loved here is that the large herbivores all seemed quite adjusted to humans and a few even followed me around, looking at me as if they expected me to offer them some food! I got some great pictures as a result, and felt like I was making a nice connection with the animals. There are so many placards to read, which I appreciate and enjoy. The real point of zoos is to educate you about these magnificent creates, and the zoo did a great job with that. My favorite part of the zoo was the Trail of the Tiger. It isn't every day that you get such amazing views of these exotic animals! It truly took my breath away to watch the tigers, the orangutans, and the "mountain father", the beautiful Asiatic black bear. I quite enjoyed the food at the café, and was delighted that a number of the tables overlook the African field, so that you can watch the zebras and giraffes while you eat. There os beer and wine on offer here for the adults. On a final note, I must mention that the staff was so friendly, informative, helpful, and clearly takes great pride in their work. The ticket agent, the café workers, and the gift shop attendant were all a joy to interact with. I like to take zoos at a slow pace, learning as much as I can, and easily spent 3 hours here, including time to eat and shop. If all of the animals had been on display and the lion present, I probably could have spent another 30 or 45 minutes here. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and hope to return with friends.

Very beautiful zoo, I especially loved the reptile area. I took about 3.5 hours to walk it by myself. Not as big as some others I've visited, but definitely less crowded and worth the trip.

There are a lot of reviews saying that you never see any animals. In reality, the zoo is a natural habitat facility like many zoos that care about their animals. You have to look hard to see many of the animals as they hide in the foliage. Also, the animals are usually hiding inside or in the shade when it gets hot. Go early in the morning when they first open and you can catch them just after they feed. We saw several babies...giraffes, rhino, and one of the smaller apes. The tiger, zebras, and orangutans we're viewable if you wander around the exhibit and look through one of the many windows. A lot of the birds were off exhibit due to avian flu danger. There's a small train ride you can take for $3 each, but you don't get a good view of the animals. What you do get is a great commentary about the zoo, it's animals and various programs. The reptile house is one of the best I've ever seen in the many zoos I've visited over the years. It keeps on going with all kinds of lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs, fish, and views of the lab areas. Definitely worth going through if you want to get real close to pythons, and other things that will kill you if you meet them in the wild.

Beautiful Zoo with great exhibits. 11 dollars general admission possibly due to to the tiger trail being closed due to construction. grounds are kept clean and the animals are amazing. Highlights were the giraffes.

Surprisingly great zoo! My favorite was the massive reptile/amphibian house, as well as the baby giraffes and rhinos. Looks recently updated. Lots of informative signs and cute animals. Can see the whole zoo in 2-3 hours depending on pace. Still a lot of animals on exhibit during the winter, although some are not there. There’s also a petting zoo section for young kids. Food was available, but at least off-season (January), the options were pretty limited — hot dogs, fries, nuggets.

The zoo overall is quite good with lots of zoo things to do. They have a good amount of the regular zoo animals to see and an enjoyable train ride. The zoo lights that you drive through are okay. Great job at crowd control. The animal lights are pretty neat at first but then repetitive and then quickly over.

Idk what it was… But the experience was trash. My husband , son & I decided to take the trip there. When we got there everything seemed fine. Until we started walking. There wasn’t really anything. Most of the animals weren’t even out. They looked really depressed. It was sort of gloomy. And we were looking forward to the butterfly house and petting zoo but they didn’t even have a butterfly house open. The petting zoo were just goats laying down. The reptile house and aquarium was pretty decent though. And some exhibits were completely empty. We didn’t see any lions, elephants. We did get to see our favorite animals though so it made up for it, which was the tiger, and a longhorn. Other than that, we don’t think it’s worth it to go back again. We did get military and college student discount which was good too .

Pretty good zoo. Didn't have many animals as many animals were off exhibit. The animals that we did see were just the basic ones, lions, tigers, giraffes, etc. Also, the food is pretty expensive and not that good quality. If you need to waste time, it's an alright place to go.

We took advantage of the member swap and went on a Monday to avoid the weekend crowd. It was a great visit. There was only few small groups of people and plenty of 6ft distance reminders. The place was also equipped with hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere. We had fun observing the animals: orangutan, giraffes, rhinos, lion, tiger and other. Most of them were sleeping or enjoying the shade. There is also a food court where they serve pizza, burgers, fries etc. Also, there is a little train ride available for $2 for each passenger older than 2. It circles around the zoo, and it takes maybe 5-6 minutes. It was a nice break from walking. With 2 young children, it took us about 3 hours (lunch break, potty break, drink breaks included) to walk around the zoo and see the animals. Thank you Virginia Zoo and Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Two hours is all you need to get around the entire park (probably three once all the attractions open back up post-pandemic.) Lots of decently large exhibits; but I feel like the space for the cheetahs is absurdly small. They don’t even have enough room to get up to speed, much less run around. That can’t possibly be good for their health. Most other habitats seemed large enough.

All of the habitats are well maintained. They have a good variety of animals and it’s actually hard to see it all. We came on a cool day and all of the animals were really active which was super cool to see! My only problem and it’s obviously not fixable now is that the layout is such a net that it is hard to see everything without having to double back

Big zoo! Took a little over two hours to see everything outside! Only giving 4 stars though because every indoor activity was closed and we missed a lot of animals. Tulsa zoo has the inside things open, just have to wear masks and social distance. Kids had a good time though.

This is a good zoo but we have been member’s about two years and visited several times. Most times many of the animals are off exhibit without explanation such as today. Still a pretty place. They do have a adorable baby rhino and giraffe.

The zoo made a great stop for our family on our vacation. I love how we were able to reserve our entry time. The time slot entry definitely reduced traffic into the zoo, creating a relaxing and safe walk through. Also, there are water features that are a great opportunity for kids to cool off. Quite a few exhibits are under construction, so be aware that there are spaces you won't see anything. Otherwise, a great afternoon

This is a wonderful zoo. The layout is perfect and the paths have so many shaded areas to sit and rest on hot days. It is just a beautiful environment and the exhibits are just awesome. They have so much to explore and see that everyone will have something to enjoy. Great place for kids to learn and see new things and also a great place to take a loved one for a stroll in a quiet and serene place.

This is a really fun and simple zoo for cheap that is great for a date, taking your kids, or even just relaxing! I am giving four stars because I felt that there was kind of a fair amount of animals that were not on exhibit, and some exhibits being built, and this is the second time I’ve been in three weeks. But, it is winter as well. I loved their indoor reptile exhibit! And they have a male lion that from what I’ve seen is fairly talkative! So cool! And, four rhinos!! That’s insane! I very much enjoy visiting this zoo and highly recommend for a good, chill time.

Nice little zoo, nothing too big but plenty to see. The enclosures had great viewing areas and some of the animals were closer then what I have seen at other zoo's. The walk in goat area was pretty cool for the kids. There are plenty of rest room areas in the zoo, but garbage was overflowing in the trash cans in the bathrooms and in some that were outside, ie at the end of the giraffe area before going into their building.

Beautiful zoo and animals are well taken care of with spacious habitats! Definitely the zoo to go to if you’re worried on supporting a place that properly cares! There’s even a petting zoo section where you can pet cows, goats and alpacas! Just don’t get soda from the vending machine because it will explode😅

Hi 👋🏼 I was there this Saturday. It was my first time in Virginia and first time at the zoo. Such a wonderful find ! The zoo is kept so clean and the animals all seemed so healthy and happy. I love how close the animals were. And how interactive we could get with them. I'm from NY and our zoos are nothing compared to this one. The animals in our zoos are so far and out of reach it is so hard to even see them. I also appreciate and have nothing but great things to say about every single staff and volunteer member. Even down to the Cafe staff. I had so many questions about the animals and I was answered with such knowledgeable answers and they did not tire of my questions and were so nice . It was also so amazing to see not only the baby giraffe but the rhino ! Plus the countless other animals and reptiles I have never encountered before. Also, Molly the goat stole my heart. Such a wonderful experience. Thank you so much !!

A great zoo for all ages, but especially toddlers and small children. Manageable in a day or even afternoon, but with great animals! My toddler loved the tiger and giraffes, as well as petting the goats. Beautifully landscaped with many fun play areas. The “playground” isn’t really what I’d call a playground, but over all I was very impressed.

Went to the zoo today so my daughter could see her favorite animal in the world. The red panda. This zoo is very well laid out. The animals were fantastic. There was a vast variety of animals from all over the world. The park was clean and the animals looked very well taken care of. The staff and volunteers were very friendly and helpful. They were very quick to give information and answer any questions. They were very informative. The red pandas were cute as can be. We were visiting from Florida. I would recommend a trip to this zoo if you are in the area. It was a great day.

The animals, the food areas, also the bathrooms were very easy to access. The employees are so very nice and helpful. This was a very great experience. We will be back. Very clean, nice, friendly environment. The food was good, and the eating areas were very clean. This was a 10 star experience. Thank you!

We love OKC Zoo! They are always upgrading some part of the Zoo also so its continuously changing. But now they have added hands on things like the string ray Bay, giraffe feeding, rhino feeding, and wild encounters to name a few now those are extra from admission but so worth it. I also recently found out they offer children day camps and programs so I'm gonna be looking into that. They have many animals at this zoo and again always trying to find new ways to improve.

BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE!! Much cheaper by about half the costs!! *2 years old & under are free* Bigger than the Tulsa Zoo. We had more room to roam around and the place is stroller friendly! Loved our last visit. Our kiddos had a blast, and you can never go wrong with cute elephants! Love them! They just got a baby giraffe not too long ago too. Feedings are welcome and will be up for purchase, masks are required due to Covid-19 if you plan to feed the animals. We went last month, & honestly a lot of people didn't bother to wear masks, even with signs up. Up to you basically, but we had a great trip!

What a great Gem of a zoo here is VA. We took the family for my wife's birthday. 1st you need to make sure you book your tickets online to get a entry time, although if not sold out then they're a little lax and you can enter pretty much anytime. We got in around 10 a.m. I was able to do the Trail of the Tiger before we started getting hungry for lunch. We actually packed a picnic and there is a very large Park just out front of the zoo. We drove to the park and had a picnic at one of their picnic tables while the kids were able to go play on the playground. After lunch we we re-entered into the zoo. They have a lot of exhibits and plenty of animals to check out. Recently they just had a baby white rhinoceros born and he was a pretty big attraction. Plenty of lions, tigers and bears and a lot of other cool Critters. Meerkats, prairie dogs a reptile house, petting zoo and some very large tortoises. The only major animal that they didn't have were elephants. Anywhere we saw volunteers or Zoo staff they were always very helpful and educational explaining habitats and habits of the animals. Some of the exhibits you can get pretty up close to especially the meerkats and porcupine. Very Scenic with lots of flowers in good walkways. Because of covid some of the food options were closed down but they did have a restaurant but you could get ice cream and some food at. They do have a little water play area for the youngins. I would highly recommend you can spend quite a few hours here or even come back a few times for a nice family event.

A very well kept, larger than expected zoo. We visited right at opening (9:30 AM) and the crowds weren’t too bad at all. Animals were active or resting in the shade to get relief from the sun that was beating down on us all. Only a few of the exhibits were closed. Restrooms were air conditioned which was a very nice surprise after walking in the sun and heat. Nice little gift shop by the entrance/exit. Would love to visit again!

That goes for botanical gardens to even though this is a review for the zoo. Most everybody is wearing their masks and practicing social distancing. I love the zoo

We had a very enjoyable time at the Virginia Zoo. Due to COVID, indoor parts of the zoo are closed off, but the bright side is it was MUCH less crowded than you would expect on a normal non-COVID day. Animals seemed like they were well-taken care of and had plenty of room to run around. We especially enjoyed the giraffe and zebra exhibit. People at the gift shop were energetic, kind, and very fun to talk to.

The zoo keepers did a fantastic job of keeping the environment clean and six feet landmarks visible. However, the direction arrows were fading a bit so near the end of the tour it was hard not to back track down the path, because we got a little turned around. Overall a great and safe family outing for pandemic times!

Half of the exhibits are closed and the other half have miserable animals. It was heartbreaking and disappointing. The Asiatic Black Bear looked especially ill, panting heavily. We tried to find someone to file a formal complaint about the dirty, unkempt exhibits where these animals are kept but there wasn't a keeper to be found the WHOLE time!

  • 5/5 Kareema Mitchell A. 3 years ago on Google
Great outdoor family outing. COVID safety measures (markers on grpund at exhibits for social distancing, staggered entry, hand sanitizing stations, mask requirements) were excellent. They even had cute signs reminding folks of social distancing which were appropriately zoo-themed and quite punny. Great job to the staff!

Half of the areas were empty. You can go inside and buy food but you can't go inside the reptile area. Seems very hypocritical doesn't it. I'm guessing the covid doesn't live where you spend money.

  • 4/5 Jessie H. 3 years ago on Google
Overall my kids enjoyed. Didn't see the elephants and the tigers were hiding from the rain. The cheetahs have a super small area. The Tapir has a bigger area and he hardly moves. My problem was all the geese poop everywhere. The parking lot was terrible. You couldn't avoid stepping in it. The geese were everywhere and they can be aggressive. I see this as a liability for the park, if a child gets attacked by a mother goose. My kids kept trying to get close to them and a I had to tell them no. The lion was on top of his rock and he roared a couple times. We could hear him throughout the park, which was cool. All the animals look in great condition.

After being closed for Covid-19 the Zoo recently reopened in late June 2020 for members. It will be open for everyone else soon. My daughter and I enjoyed several hours to include a lunch outside in the shade and an ice cream treat before leaving. Upon entering the parking lot, in a accessible van, we located a handicapped space with enough room to exit (see photo). Then we went through the entrance to the Zoo. Upon entry there is a set route for visitors to follow. Most of the Zoo can enjoyed during the one mile course. Masks are now required to enter the Zoo. However, its best to check the Zoo website for the most up to date entrance requirements. This visit was 100% accessible using my electric wheelchair. It was great to see families enjoying the day outside while respecting the 6 foot space. Hope you're able to enjoy a day at the Zoo.

Very quiet on a weekday when kids in school/virtual school. MUST make reservations in advance online during Covid. Family membership is a good idea & will pay for itself. My fam of 5 would've been $85 for one trip &, for about $44 more, we got an annual membership. Since they're AZA members, we'll get discounts at other zoos. Bathrooms clean. Sections, like the petting zoo, closed because of Covid. If you are really missing the petting zoo, just head on over to Bluebird Gap in Hampton after the zoo. We did! It's free.

This is a really nice Zoo. I have had a membership since March and I think it's the best deal for a family of 4 (5 with an infant). We love to see the giraffes which you can see up close. And the monkeys near the front are always hilarious. Could use some more/different/updated bathrooms near the wooden play area. When in there today and regretted it. Gross.

We had a great day at the zoo! I'm grateful that they're open despite everything with COVID. We had to wear masks to enter but didn't have to wear them around the park which was nice. We were disappointed that the reptile house and petting zoo were closed. My daughter was disappointed we didn't get to see the sloths. I understand taking precautions but I find it a bit hypocritical to have the indoor gift shop open but not the other indoor activities. Can they not have the petting zoo animals out just for looking at? Just seemed odd to me. Other than that it was a great visit.

They currently require you to get tickets online. The tickets get you admission at a certain block of time but you can stay as long as needed. They have all the exhibits marked with traffic patterns so everyone should be heading the same direction. The only downside right now is the enclosed areas, like the reptile house, are closed.

I love the zoo, but I was sad that the farm, red pandas, and a few other exhibits were closed. The orangutans were super adorable playing with a big water jug, and theme music from Lion King cued up in my head when I came around the corner and the lion was roaring from his post up on top of the rocks. We did still enjoy those exhibits that were open.

Awesome for kids! They have a great petting zoo and really nice interactive stuff for kids. Not nearly as expensive as it could be considering how much there is to do and see! The cafe is pretty nice but drinks are a little pricey. Also there is a peacock that they let roam which is just adorable.

A lot of the exhibits we're closed which was disappointing to say the least. It's a nice zoo with decent exhibits though. I was shocked at how many things they charged extra for. We had a good time and will probably go back especially in the summer when I hope more exhibts will be open.

  • 5/5 Clare L. 3 years ago on Google
This is clearly a well-kept zoo with some lovely promenades and spaces. The Lotus Pavilion was stunning! It seemed a little lonely for the spacious elephant areas to have only a single little elephant each when I visited, but perhaps there were others receiving special care elsewhere at the time. It was also a bit surprising to see how little room the large cats get to roam around, and concerning to see them pacing back and forth endlessly in such a small square footage. Not being an expert, all I can say is that I hope more visitors continue to support this home for so many wonderful creatures, and that we can ensure their well-being for many more generations. That said, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time! I've never seen such bright, healthy flamingoes, and the bird enclosure was a pleasure to stroll through! The many beautiful cats were such a sight to behold, many species of which I'd never seen before- like the relatively small fishing cats and the caracal with their curious ear tufts. I was bummed that the red pandas were nowhere to be seen when I came by, but so many of the Oklahoma Zoo residents were unbelievably photogenic! Such playful sea lions! Such lumbering bears! However, my hands-down favorite stop had to be in front of the adorable sleeping fox family. My visit left me with memories that will last a lifetime!

Today is my birthday. I was soooo excited to go to the zoo. I haven't been in years and I have fond memories of seeing all the animals with my kids. Due to Covid, reservations were necessary for a timed entry. No problem. Went on the website and easily made the reservations. Didn't see anything telling me that 1/3 of the zoo was going to be closed off. In retrospect, it makes sense, but I think before people drop $18/ ticket, some full disclosure would have been nice. So, I was already feeling the sadness due to no access to the armadillo and sloth (my and my son's favorite animals). But then it just went down hill from there. Everything just looked run down. The habitats, the animals, the gardens. Ugh. It was depressing. That with the fact that the farm, the nocturnal and reptile exhibit, the kangaroos, the otters, the fox, the elephants, and almost all of the birds were not on exhibit made it feel like a waste. Meh.

So much fun to see all the animals with the fam. Enjoyed by a variety of age groups, the exhibits are all detailed and informative and tell visitors facts you wouldn't think of. :) The best time to go is probably during the warmer months because more exhibits will be open and allow for more interaction with the animals.

Went on a Saturday afternoon and had a great time. Beautiful landscape, active animals all over the grounds. Sad some weren't up on exhibit but still so many animals to see. The baby rhino was super adorable playing with a ball. As were the otters but who doesn't say that about otters? My favorite exhibit was the Goliath Birdeater Tarantula. It's massive! 😍

Gorgeous layout, stunning photo possibilities,  very peaceful and wonderful trail around global placement of animal species, based on continental native location. You do have to pre-order tickets online because of COVID they only let in 665 people at a time, but they also have discounts online too! Also consider weather because not all animals like to come out if not sunny but still so worth it, best stroll around the globe for a bargain! Only wish that the train had been open, that would have been the cherry on top.

I went to the Zoo's pre-Thanksgiving event tonight with a friend and was delighted. The animals we saw after dark were large inflated versions of the real thing, lighted from within as well as spotlighted from the ground and all angles. The multi- colored lighting effect was extended to the surrounding trees, was overall lovely, and the awed audience was appreciative. The large attendance was relaxed, well behaved and of all ages, There were docents all around to answer questions and help "wrangle" the many small children, ensuring no damage occurred to people or property. If you haven't experienced Norfolk (the cultural center of the region), and the VA Zoo, check out their web sites for events and jump in! I've attached some pics.

  • 3/5 Michelle J. 2 years ago on Google
Was so excited to go to the zoo for the first time, but was sadly disappointed. Many of the animals were "off exhibit ". Sad orangutans and one lone lion that was pacing back and forth, but we did see 2 white rhinos (and a baby) and giraffes. What about Australia? Saw 2 emus and... that's it! Seriously? Best spot to visit - the reptile house! Got some great snake pictures! The only restaurant open in Africa had 2 day old chicken wraps that were very dry (we didn't notice how old they were until AFTER we ate them) and still cost full price. Granted, we went mid-week (Tuesday), but at the price of the visit... just very disappointed!

  • 4/5 Nicole M. 2 years ago on Google
Nice well maintained small zoo. Plenty of areas for kids to get some energy out (water areas, logs for climbing, bamboo maze, an area to pet farm animals). The outdoor tables are spread out to allow plenty of room for social distancing and there are signs all around the zoo reminding guests to keep their distance & when masks are required or recommended. Really enjoyed having gardens spread throughout the zoo to show the importance of plants for the environment as well as to inform guests how some zoo animals get some of their diet requirements filled. Several of the exhibits are under construction so animals were off exhibit. Online tickets with a timed entry are required but the zoo wasn't very crowded on a Monday so tickets should be easy to get most days.

What a nice day to visit Virginia Zoo!!! No matter the age you will truly have fun here. Just remember to bring your own food or Go out for food at one of the area restaurants. The exhibits are excellent and more than worth the money but the food well let’s just say I’ve worked for a certain institution in the state and the food was better. I think that they would do good to review not the menus but the vendors for where they are getting the food from. They may want to perhaps outsource a local restaurant to rent a space to come in and provide food for the different areas that represent countries. For example the African village could have maybe an African restaurant that’s local or Caribbean restaurant to come in and sale food. An Asian restaurant near the Asian exhibit. My baby Cory had a great day at the zoo. Please enjoy these pics will upload more. Oh almost forgot to mention the reptile exhibit it is simply off the chain. They have done a great job updating this particular exhibit. You must get to the Virginia zoo to see the reptile exhibit it is on believable. And my pictures do not do it any justice you must see it in person. I love the staff you guys know how I am about customer service the customer service was above and beyond. The bougie person like me just loves the Virginia State Zoo!!!

Came here at the beginning of August with my boyfriend and his sister and we had a great time. They had some very cool and interesting animals including lions, tigers, giraffes and rhinos and more. There were some enclosures that we didn’t see any animals in which was kind of disappointing but other than that we all had fun and would definitely come back again. I loved the giraffe exhibit and how they had it where you can be up close to the giraffes face/head and see them eating. And they have a college student discount on zoo tickets as long as you bring your valid school id

My kids and I loved our visit to the Viginia Zoo recently. What I like most about this location is that its not too big or hard to get lost in. The directions are very easy to follow and the distance between yourself and animals are spot on. We got to see alot of animals close up during this visit which gave my kids more excitement and curiosity. To me, we typically take about an 1 1/2 to 3 hours to see everything but that really depends on the person and how many times people visit. Overall, the zoo was clean and animals were beautifully taken care. That definitely gives me a peace of mind. There are also bathrooms, venting machines, and food located throughout the zoo. :)

My favorite zoo now! Have gone to Richmond Metro, Smithsonian, and now this one, and this one was the winner for us! It had plenty of areas to stroll or just relax, pet and brush the goats, gardening areas, open minded play spaces, nursing room, 2 food areas, splash area, very clean and well maintained! Admission was $11 per person and free parking. We spent 4 hours looking at everything and couldve spent more if a few areas werent closed for construction. The train was being repaired so we could not ride but part was out on display so you could see.

Staff was outstanding! They shared knowledge of the animals in great detail. We even enjoyed lunch there. We bought plush long snakes for the boys and I bought a giraffe purse that I love. My 4 year old grandson said it was his best day ever!

Great well maintained zoo, not as many animals as other zoos I’ve been. Not crowded. Most exhibits had better views than other places. Very kid friendly.

A great overall zoo! Asia area and Okavango themed areas are beautiful! Large splash area for children. Lots of open lawn to walk and relax in. Don't miss the reptile house!
