There are a number of incidents I could list for why this place deserves such a low review and why I would not recommend to anyone who values and loves their pet as the family member that they are. The service is incredibly unfriendly, the receptionists are rude, unsmiling, have not true love for their profession or the animals they work with, and unfortunately the same goes for the grooming team. There is no special care and no warmth in this place that is only interested in taking your money and showing you the door. They are also incompetent with paperwork and record keeping of your animal, which has unfortunately caused me issues more than once. Overall, a disappointing establishment and experience.

General examination for 2mins costs $150. A new method of stealing money from vulnerable dog owners. Out of our love for our pets, we conduct research to locate the best and safest veterinarian near us. However, I assumed that the place I chose was trustworthy. I noticed my dog coughing a few times, despite being a homebound pup with no exposure to other dogs. I took him to the vet, who diagnosed him with Kennel cough and prescribed $300 worth of medications. Unfortunately, my dog became severely ill after taking the medication and has been sick for four days now, struggling to breathe and unable to sleep at night. I contacted VCA, and they suggested paying $300 for an xray and additional medication at an additional cost. Just for a general examination 2-3 mins by vet you are going to be charged $150.. While most of the places around the same location is only $50. Initially, I had no issues paying for the treatment, as I simply wanted my pup to remain healthy and safe at all times. However, the worst part is that you only discover the cost when you are about to pay. The phone representative asked me to take my business elsewhere if I cannot afford them. I'll take her word for this.

With high prices you want it all for your furry friend…It’s not worth the visit for several reason..example Their is no personal TLC. I’ve been there 6 years with many pets, that needed surgeries; dentistry; etc. Not once did I get a follow up call by the vet or tech to see how my pets were doing. After a month euthanizing my dog I emailed them about how disappointed I didn’t get a condolence card and a few weeks after that complain I received one. I can go on and on, with the list of disappointments. Yet I was patient with the staff and I endured. Until my breaking point was a certain receptionist with a big chip on her shoulder and will target you and call you at home to tell you off… Maybe if she had more knowledge and love for animals she wouldn’t be so miserable.

Literally the worst vet ever. They lock you in with their care club plan for the year and because they are already set to take your money for a year they do not care to be there provide services for your pet when you need them. This has happened to me twice where the vet has cancelled my appointment when my pup has been sick. How can you just cancel on your clients like that if their dog is possibly on the verge of dying. They call once and say they leave a voice mail but I never receive a voice mail notification. The least they could do is call twice and leave an email. But no, instead they go wasting my time to drive to their clinic just to turn me and my dog away because they have no doctor on site. Instead they automatically rescheduled me for the following day in the middle of the afternoon assuming I have no life no job. This is the most inconsiderate vet I have ever been. As soon as I can get out of their contract I will do so immediately. I will never recommend this clinic to anyone unless they don’t mind subpar care for their pets.

This place was amazing! My baby Franklin was hit by a car and needed emergency surgery to remove his leg. It was extremely traumatizing for him and me but the folks at Birchmount took incredible care of him, allowed me to visit on the weekend and did a great job in keeping Franklin as comfortable as possible. It has been 3 years later and our Frank is the most playful, cutest, silliest cat ever! He is our little tri-pod and has healed wonderfully, is healthy and so happy! Franklin's "Brave Paw Award" hangs proudly on our wall. Thank you Birchmount!

Super friendly and compassionate. I've decided to continue using this location after a 6-year relationship with a previous vet.

I am very happy with the service I get here. Wait times aren't too long, everyone is very friendly and you can tell that they all love working with animals. I recommend them to everyone I know.

Thatcher's first visit was amazing. His first vaccines happened with him not even noticing. I've been bringing my dogs here since 2019, and never had a bad moment. 100% recommend!

I have only been here twice and I can tell you all they care about is to take your money and check you out as quickly as possible. The front desk team does not smile or appear friendly on any of my visits. Instead of helping me calm down my animal for the ride home I was told “o there’s nothing we can do about that!” Everyone watched and doing nothing. No kind of nurturing and sense of warmth that you want for your special animal. Very Insensitive and I will never return. Do not waste your money here for this kind of service. I actually have to ask a lot of questions instead of them educating me on what is happening.

THE WORST EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD AT A VET. They lied about the pricing - your first visit is NOT free! They also LIED ABOUT WHICH PROCEDURES WERE NECESSARY - contacted four other vets who all told me the $200+ they wanted for bloodwork was a total scam as THE BLOODWORK WAS NOT NECESSARY. This was not even an emergency, was supposed to be a pre-spay check in; cat is in great health and 1.5yrs old so no need for the bloodwork! Staff were incredibly rude. No one ever answers the phone or returns emails or voicemails. NEVER GO HERE! THEY WILL TRY TO RIP YOU OFF AND TREAT YOU LIKE GARBAGE THE WHOLE TIME. There are plenty of other wonderful vet clinics in the GTA, go anywhere but here.

During my appointment the vet spent more dealing with his computer than he did trying to diagnose and provide my pet with a treatment plan. When booking the vet appointment made reservation’s to have my dog stay with them. After asking if anything else was required from me before his stay and was told no, I received an email 1 hour after the vet appointment informing me that a fecal sample was required prior to my pets stay. After returning with the sample was told it would cost $75.00 to be processed. They then realized it was not necessary as my dog would be isolated due to his health concerns and the vets instructions. I asked what the final cost of the stay would be and was given an an approximate of $400 to $500 without explanation for the $100 difference. I was not provided any instructions as per drop off and pick up. They did not send me any updates or photos while he was in their care. Will never return.

I really want to thank everyone for taking such a good care of my cat Pepper. She was in need of a cystotomy to remove the stones in her bladder which was causing her pain. Birchmount was the only animal hospital that was transparent about the pricing upfront, out of 5 different vets I called. As Pepper does get very grumpy and aggressive to strangers, it was important to know what to expect before bringing her in as I know she's a tough cat to deal with, I had to make sure I didn't need to bring her in to different vets multiple times as that will cause her to be more stressful. Birchmount was able to accommodate Pepper's exam and surgery all within few days. Thanks to Dr Barrett, Dr Radchenko and Dr Mariampillai's good care, Pepper's recovery is going well!

The Vet is professional and experienced. But the customer service and front desk are horrible!!! I bring my dog to visit this clinic over 5 times in last 2 months. They told me the insurance claim has been submitted. Even I ask them why the insurance company hasn’t receive claim forms, they just complain the insurance company always slow. Finally, I realize that they never submitted the claim. They just want to finish the conversation quick and don’t care about the client. This clinic really need new customer service

If only we can give doctor Barret a Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy in terms of being absolutely the most caring, amazing, and loving vet to our Blueberry, we would nominate him a million times over. Dr. Barret has gone above and beyond for our lil Blue and she absolutely adores him. She has seen over 6 vets (most of them being eye problems) and Dr. Barret is the only vet she doesn't tremble/shake around. If we can keep going on about him, we would, Blue loves him and so do we. Dr. Barret went into this loving animals and wanting to solve their problems and you can tell. Pictures are before and after pics of Blue’s eyes. Cherry eyes are not common in corgis, but at-least we found a vet that understood that and did their research.

BEST vets EVER! The docs are kind and compassionate. The place is clean, spacious and organized. The groomer (Megan -whom I think has left) was grooming my dog for years!!! I’m sure they have other amazing groomers in place of her too. I actually have moved downtown but I still bring Noodle back this place because I trust them.

We started going to Birchmount Veterinary Clinic 20 years ago when we got our kitten. The vets were great back then. After they changed to VCA, the vets who specialized in cats changed a few times. The last time we brought our cat in, we saw Dr. Tse. Our cat was 18 at the time and one of her eyes was changing colour. Without doing a single test, Dr. Tse told us she probably needed to have the eye removed and that it would be $1,500. She touched our cat's belly and said it felt like she had cancer and if that was the case, she would likely 'go quickly'. The assistant was very rough with our cat and indicated she had 'two yellow stickers" on her file.  They didn't even try to be gentle given her advanced age. Then, Dr. Tse took her in for tests and gave our 18-year old indoor cat who never has contact with any other animals and was apparently on a death's door, a rabies shot (which of course, there was a charge for). A few days later, the tests revealed that the only problem with our cat was hyperthyroidism which is being controlled with medication. We've since switched to Toronto Mobile Vet Services. They are amazing! They're reasonably priced and gentle with our now 20 year old cat. They are never rough with her and don't give our very senior cat any unnecessary treatments. They also told us that there was no need for us to continue with the prescription diet that VCA told us she needed. Having said all of that, the 2 stars in this review go to the people at the front desk at VCA Birchmount. They are always friendly, always return calls and answer any questions you have.

Dr Barrett is a wonderful vet who took care of the needs of a patients cat. If I needed a vet in Scarborough I would absolutely use his services first. Very calm, competent and clear with his description of what is on and what needs to be done.

Excellent veterinary practice. They actually know me and my pet Weimaramer by name. Very confident about their care. I do not hesitate to recommend them. Dr. Barret neutered my female dog and you can barely see the incision scar. Saved me hundreds over keyhole surgery.

I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome at VCA when I brought my cat. Dr. Paiman's kindness, accuracy and expertise made this experience exceptional. I appreciate his patience in explaining the exams and answering all my questions. Thank you.

I cannot thank all of the staff- especially my cat Tony’s vet, Crystal Tse, for his care these past few days. My poor guy had a second urinary obstruction and had to stay a few nights and he is a VERY sassy boy to put it litely 😭. They still treated him with such care, Dr.Crystal sent me photos of my boy to keep me updated and he’s been home since yesterday and doing amazing. THANK YOU to the ENTIRE vca team, and Dr.Crystal, for taking care of our fur babies!! 1000% recommend. - Alissa Morra

I highly recommend Birchmount! My dog was a patient here for approx 4 years . My Burnaby passed Wednesday night and they went above and beyond with my family. Maria was an angel during this time Maria showed myself and my family so much empathy and kindness once again thank you for treating our furbaby with love ❤️

My German Shepard needed eye surgery to remove a cyst the developed fairly quickly. When he went for surgery they found a lump in his stomach and we agreed to remove that as well. He has healed very well and is doing great. The eye looks like nothing happened and his stomach is healing very well.

I used to love this place. Great service but once Covid hit something changed and they never pick up the phone. Even getting a call back is rare after leaving a VM. It’s really frustrating dealing with them and had to move vets. No issue with the quality of the care provided but the customer service is non existent.

Overpriced medication compared to other vet clinics I went to. Bought a medication for my dog because my vet ran out of stock, and they charged me almost double the price of my vet. I still have to buy it because of my dogs need. But I don't think it's right.

Courteous and professional clinic. It is obvious they love animals. I took my cat in for grooming. I was notified they whole time. Highly recommend this clinic. I found them through my vet. My vet highly recommended this clinic for their special attention.

I have been going to this vet for 20 years. Before the new ownership came on and they built the new building, hands down, best vet. NOW, prepare to leave broke with no proper care for your animal! I would leave every appointment paying a MINIMUM 500 dollars. And when your dog is sick? Price gouge. No communication, don’t call you back, don’t call and tell you when things are ready to be picked up. Really a pathetic excuse of a business.

If they had better customer service, it would be a 5/5. However, they provide excellent care for your pets. And for me, it's conveniently located. I love the doctors at this clinic. They are top-notch.

Deb, Dr. Barrett and Dr. Tong are absolutely amazing! We brought our then, 9.5 yr old Newfoundlander, Monty, in about 2 years ago for a suspected torn ACL and since then, this crew have been super with their care and attention of Monty. Deb has been so kind and attentive to our needs and always follows up promptly.. She has gone above and beyond for us and we so appreciate her. Dr. Barrett is a very kind and gentle vet and we felt instantly comforted in his care and his recommendations for Monty's ACL surgery and follow up. Most recently, we have been seeing Dr. Tong for acupuncture for Monty and we have been seeing amazing results. Dr. Tong is so patient and professional and she explained in detail what she was going to do. She took a video before and after the first treatment so we could see the progress in only one treatment which was so encouraging. She also suggested some herbs for Monty and the difference after being on the herbs after a very short time was also incredible! The color of Monty's tongue and the clarity in his eyes showed a marked difference. It's like our 11 year old is a puppy again. We highly recommend this vet clinic and can't say enough about Dr. Barrett and Dr. Tong, and in our experience, Deb, who is the cherry on top. Thank you all for a wonderful service. Love, Monty and his moms

I came to VCA Birchmount looking for acupuncture service because after a big surgery, my 13yo dog got facial paralysis on the entire left side of her face that would not heal on it's own. Her face on the left side was completely droopy and she couldn't blink, smile, or use her mouth. Dr. Tong's acupuncture sessions cured my dog's facial paralysis in less than three months! Now, my dog's face is back to normal. I am excited we are continuing acupuncture for my senior dog's mobility issues. Dr. Tong has great bedside manners. I'm really happy to have a vet that understands both Western and Eastern medicine. The service is always on time. The employees are really friendly. The facilities are super clean.

Prefacing this that I never write reviews, ever but this one has just ticked me off. The only reason I went to VCA was because I received a free physical exam after adopting through the Toronto Cat Rescue. I arrive and provide all the records but they failed to see the one regarding a rabies shot, so they gave her another one thinking she hadn’t received it, when she had already. Wasn’t thrilled about that but she was okay after and I’m surprised they voided the charge on that. A week later, I see a skin condition of some sort developing on her ear. This could have been related to the second unneeded shot, or a coincidence, who knows. Regardless, I take her to be checked out and the vet can’t determine what it is, therefore not giving a diagnosis. Don’t worry though, we’ll give her an antibiotic shot that we’ll charge you $90 for and another $100 for consultation that led to no diagnosis. This thing could have been a fungal infection from the look of it and an antibiotic is useless against that. Was also prescribed ointment to put on the area, but they didn’t have any stock, so they made me call other clinics and pharmacies asking if they had it, nobody did. Another ointment gets prescribed that is also an antibiotic with steroids. This is all prescribed without a diagnosis, don’t forget, and that’s another $80 for the second option prescription. The steroids in the cream have helped a little but it has still spread to other parts of her ear. The vet would know this if they called to check after a week like I asked and they said they would, but I’ve heard nothing in 2 almost 3 weeks. I could call myself but I’d probably get charged for that as well. When you take your pet to the vet, you expect to pay for a treatment that solves the problem, not ripped off and feeling like you’re throwing money into a fire pit. I’m changing clinics to one that actually feels like they care for your pet, not just pretending like they do when it’s in the clinic.
