Great little museum for all ages. My grandson and I have been several times. Free entry for Newark and Sherwood residents. 4 stars rather than 5 because several of the interactive tables weren't working - given that its the school holidays they really were essential to young people getting the most out of the visit. Even the 20 min cinema show was shut ! Always clean and we'll displayed, history is well explained. Generally there's a separate display upstairs. Toilet facilities great. Cafe in the same building, as well as visitor information displays , children's activities often on. Parking nearby (car park fees).

This is an interesting museum with lots of artefacts and displays about the Civil War and the history of Newark. The information is clear in most areas. However, the film was very disappointing. It looked to be an interesting film but I am deaf and the film did not have subtitles so l was not able to understand what was happening. There is a lift to other parts of the exhibition. The staff were friendly. There is a café and there is a payable car park nearby.

Very interesting, they have obviously spent a lot on the interactive displays. But I have to say a little disappointed, for the price & title "National" I expected to see a lot more?

National Civil War Centre - Newark Museum is a museum as the place says, it is the history of Newark on Trent city, you can bring your kids around. You need to pay at the front entrance. There is a disabled car park next to the museum.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Good exhibits. Very hands on for children. Clean toilets on site. Interesting videos about different aspects of the civil war. Great dressing up opportunities. Easy to find and short stay car park only 2 mins walk.

Great space which describes the 17 century Civil Wars from the Newark Perspective. It was in the middle of the country and was a royalist stronghold amongst Parliamentarian towns. The exhibitions are very varied to please all ages, and there is an emphasis on the social conditions and milieu of the times which is a refreshing change. There is also a good area devoted to Newark town development as well as a unique Iceni torc and a Roman dodecahedron on display - all in all you could spend 1/2 day here.

Really worthwhile visit to get a good understanding of the English Civil War and also the importance of Newark. Good for families and those with an interest in the Civil War. Great welcome and well laid out. Palace Theatre cafe accessible from the museum.

I can't believe more people don't visit this place. It's actually one of the better museums I have been to, and I even got a free entry on the day I was there!

Fantastic museum, high volume of information and artifacts from the wars. Plenty of children's activities from colouring, to playing dress up and toys. The team are extremely friendly and have made a great effort for entertainment for all.

Good museum. We had downloaded the audio tour to our phones in advance and that was good. Enjoyed the film. There was a great practical talk on how to load and fire a matchload musket. Nice friendly staff.

Today we went as part of a home Education group to do a workshop with Donna. Her energy and enthusiasm was exceptional. The interactive armour dress up was great! This place is an amazing learning resource! It was also brilliant to see the resident artist Vanessa Stones Artist on the top floor where our children did some craft houses and put them together. A very great addition to Newark right on our doorstep. First time we have been and looking forward to return for family day on Saturday and spend more time exploring the other three floors we didn't have time to visit! Awesome place and will be returning!!

A very good summary of the civil war and its impact on Britain. Very clear explanation of the politics. Good displays and lots of interactive exhibits for youngsters. Liked the films.

We enjoyed our visit to the Civil war museum very much, the staff are so friendly enthusiastic, and helpful. All the exhibits are presented well, mostly behind glass but some that are interactive which is perfect if you have children with you. There are other rooms with exhibits that are not civil War related which are also well thought out and interesting.

It’s a well maintained museum and child friendly but not sure it’s worth full admission price

Small but very thorough, with a good range of exhibits. Check out the cabinet with Prince Rupert's dog's collar and preserved paw print. There's a funny story about that.

Not been here since I was a kid, walking into town with my kid and father to see what's going on with book festival, I thought there was something on at the museum, we walked in to be greeted by 2 desks far apart, one with a lady one with a man, no indication of which one we should approach, my father approached the gentleman and I started to follow only for the lady to exclaim " er excuse me can I help you" I turn to see the lady looking at us like we were something stuck to the bottom of her shoe, I explained we were here to look around, she still looking at us with a disgusted expression tells me the museum is closed, and only open for book festival stuff, I said great it's the book festival stuff we wanna see, again rudely and in a voice that suggests I'm wasting her time she tells me it's not here..... (That makes sense, they're open for stuff that isn't there) she offered no more information, I told her she was a very rude woman and left, I have no intention of ever returning, I don't know why people who are so rude work in customer facing roles

This museum is excellent, the displays are well maintained, easily legible signage and fascinating exhibits. I feel like there could be more about this history of Newark outside of the civil war period. But what is there is brilliant. The Newark torc is well worth the visit! But the phial of Charles the Firsts blood is most definitely my favourite thing here. I only wish this museum was bigger! I could spend all day here.

Small but very informative museum with some excellent interactive exhibits that are especially beneficial for younger visitors and really help to engage with the subject matter (the staff are also knowledgeable & friendly) While it's main focus is the Civil War there are also some smaller exhibitions covering the local area & related activities. If in the area it is well an hour or two of your time.

Well weekend and it’s shut great , not , if it’s History pertaining to the English Civil war why not open on a Sunday ? Or is that on Cromwells orders ?

Lots of thought have contributed to providing a very interesting experience for the whole family, while at the same time giving them an insight into our past history. Friendly and knowledgeable staff Refreshment and toilet facilities were excellent

This is brilliant for all ages. At the moment it is free for Newark residents so make the most of it. Great displays and so interactive it kept two 5 year olds busy for 3 hours! Also there are musket demonstrations and around 200 boxes and cardboard tubes to build and play with. Phew !

Been today. Great for a small museum; quite interactive with the videos, films and objects that are there. Very clean place and friendly staff which were very helpful. Also, the vegan carrot cake at the cafe was tasty.

Really good day out here. Lots to see, nicely organised, multi-media, good audio tour to download, dressing up and other stuff for kids. In addition to the civil war stuff, there are 2 galleries devoted to the history of Newark from prehistory through major events in British history. So many exhibits it warrants more than one visit. There's a cafe with home-baked cakes and lots to check out in Newark itself. A very interesting and surprising day.
