A VERY important part of our island's history, yet a very sad, forgotten place, that if i remember rightly, you have to walk on a back road kinda path to get to it,as ( 5-6 years ago when i went) if it wasn't for my dad's knowledge of it, i would have never known of its existence... 😕

It's just a memorial monument, with some water and mangroves surrounding it really. The historic nature of the site isn't lost though, and it's nice to stand where the first sailors established their presence on Mauritius.

Access to this place must be reviewed as lots of children visit to learn about the history of Mauritius. Apart from the old monument and mangrove trees whereby we teach children about the prevention of beach erosion, nothing interesting has been done to restore the glory of this area, apart from handrails installed to improve the safety for kids. Other historical sites on this coastal area, including museums make up for this road trip. This place is ideal for those who want to delve into the historical aspects of Mauritius.

(Translated by Google) Honestly not much to see except the sea that we see everywhere else. A historic memorial without much significance. (Original) Honnêtement pas grand chose à voir à part la mer que l'on voit de partout ailleurs. Un monument commémoratif historique sans grande envergure.

On May 1, 1598, the Dutchman Cornelius Van Neck landed on the island in the Indian Ocean due to a storm. On October 2nd, the fleet left the island of Mauritius, which from then on remained uninhabited but was Dutch for 40 years.

Dutch First Landing, also known as the Dutch Landing Monument, is a historic landmark located on the east coast of Mauritius in the village of Grand Port. The monument commemorates the arrival of the Dutch in Mauritius in 1598, marking the island's first recorded landing by European explorers. The monument is situated in a beautiful coastal location, overlooking the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean. Visitors to Dutch First Landing can take a leisurely stroll around the monument and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding area, including the nearby coral reefs and the picturesque village of Grand Port. In addition to its scenic beauty, Dutch First Landing is also an important cultural landmark, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into the island's rich history and cultural heritage. The monument is made up of a series of stone pillars, each representing the arrival of a different Dutch ship that landed on the island during the early colonial era. Visitors can also explore the nearby village of Grand Port, which played a significant role in the island's early history. The village was once home to a thriving port and served as a strategic base for the Dutch, who used it as a base for their operations in the Indian Ocean. Today, visitors to Grand Port can explore the many historic sites and landmarks in the area, including the Saint Aubin House, the Grand Port Museum, and the Ruins of the Dutch Fort. Overall, Dutch First Landing is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Mauritius, particularly for those interested in history and culture. Its stunning views, historical significance, and nearby attractions make it an unforgettable experience for anyone who visits.

Monument commemorating the 1st landing of Dutch in Mauritius. Nothing much to see. Just a stone monument. Access easy from the road with clear signs.

Great view of the bay. Unfortunately not well maintained. There is plenty of space to park but from the street it looks inconspicuous at first, or you can't see the entrance directly. In addition to the beautiful mangroves, there are also flying foxes to observe.

A difficult spot to find, but has a nice view on the bay. Unfortunately, the monument has been vandalized and is not in great shape when I visited it. The plaque is missing and the lettering is only partially readable anymore. Only worth the stop if you're really passing by. An example would be if you visit both Mahebourg (with the National museum) and Vieux Port (with the Frederick Hendrik museum), then the road between the two passes here.
