(Translated by Google) Close to the Cathedral, one of the squares that are often crossed in a hurry without giving a deeper look is Piazza Fontana, which owes its name to the eighteenth-century fountain in the center of the square, the Piermarini fountain. But not everyone knows that it was the first fountain in Milan and for about a century also the only one. The fountain recovered water from the nearby Seveso river and Piermarini encountered many problems in its construction, due to the insufficient slopes, which led him to lower the fountain with respect to the street level; it took thirteen years of work. The fountains often represent an era and a particular style, the fountain in Piazza Fontana is the "classic" par excellence.

Besides the historical value of the fountain, this square is a well located place to make a pause, rest in its benches and refill your water bottles. Also, there is supposedly a public WiFi access point, but I wasn't able to find it at the time.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful example of architecture located near the Duomo, a quiet corner where you can relax and stop on the benches in a symbolic place of the city even if it should be cleaned up a bit (Original) Bell esempio di architettura situata a ridosso del Duomo un angolo tranquillo dove rilassarsi e sostare sulle panchine in luogo simbolo della città anche se andrebbe un po' ripulita

(Translated by Google) The Piermarini fountain is a neoclassical style fountain, the work of the architect Giuseppe Piermarini, located in Milan in the square of the same name (to which the same work gives its name). Inaugurated on 15 August 1782, it is considered the first fountain built in the city Milanese. It was inaugurated on August 15, 1782, after 13 years of work and having not yet been finished (the marble sirens were still missing). In addition to the technical difficulties in creating such a structure, the difficulty in getting the water from the Seveso river to the fountain, due to the insufficient slope between the two points, influenced the construction times. The architect solved this problem by lowering the work with respect to the level of the square and placing a pump in Via delle Ore. Made of pink Baveno granite, it is 20 m² large and consists of three superimposed pools of different sizes. From the one placed higher up, the water drops dripping into the intermediate tank, under which there are dolphins with the two mermaids on horseback, to then descend into the lower main tank and, through this, flow through four mouths into as many ground tanks . The two marble statues, nicknamed "Teodolinde", works by the sculptor Giuseppe Franchi, were not yet ready at the time of the inauguration and were placed only the following year Today it is an excellent square covered by trees, ideal for relaxing and taking a break (Original) La fontana del Piermarini è una fontana in stile neoclassico, opera dell'architetto Giuseppe Piermarini, collocata a Milano presso l'omonima piazza (alla quale la stessa opera dà il nome) Inaugurata il 15 agosto 1782, è considerata la prima fontana costruita nella città meneghina.
