Rideau Hall (Government House) located at 1 Sussex dr. is the official residence of the British monarch and its Governor General. Its massive estate host visiting royalty, foreign heads of State and parliamentary galas where the prime minister and federal members of parliament are sworn into office. On the 88 acre site you will find a fountain of Hope dedicated to the late Terry Fox who through his Marathon of Hope raised money and awareness of cancer research, Ceremonial trees and lovely open gardens. There is also Rideau cottage that currently hosts Canada's Prime Minister and his family while the official Prime Minister's residence, 24 Sussex is having a major overhaul. The grounds of Rideau Hall are open to the public and it is a nice place to see. There is lots of security and even more restrictions due to covid so it is good to plan your trip from information on their web site. There has been more challenges by Canadians concerning the role of Britian"s monarchy and its governance role over Canada. Furthermore, some Governor Generals (appointed by Canada's Prime Minister approved by the Queen of England) have created several scandles where the Governor Generals have abused their power, taken lavish trips, decided by themselves to not fulfill their public service responsibilities. These poorly selected people may encourage change in Canada's political system. If constitutional reform was not so difficult to achieve then it probably would have happened a very long time ago. Update: On July 2, 2020 Correy Hurren drove his truck through the gates of Rideau Hall. Hurren wanted to arrest sitting Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau to make a statement over the government's COVID restrictions and the ban on assault firearms. There was over $100,000 of damage to the gate and no one was injured. Hurren was arrested peacefully and sentenced to 6 years in jail. When asked if he had any regrets, Hurren said he wished he "saw the Terry Fox statue by Parliament Hill." I have included a photo of the Terry Fox statue infront of Parliament Hill so you can see what Hurren missed seeing. Maybe you can see the statue when you come to Ottawa. If you like my reviews, photos or videos give them a thumbs up. Feel free to take advantage of the official grounds at Rideau Hall, just do it peacefully.

Nice beautiful place... they are open all year round for tours and it's free. only thing is you have to make a call and reserve your spot. they go by appointments only. P.S it doesn't have to be a big group even one person can get tour as well. we took advantage of Doors Open Ottawa and got to see their beautiful green house that's not usually open every day for public. The green house had plants ranging from big jades, pinaple, oranges and many exotic flowering plants as well. it's a very well maintained green house, really impressed. there is an ice rink for winter ice skating thats free too. parking is on street or paid. easy access by transit. good to know the history of politically important persons (if ur interested).

The garden was beautiful and peaceful, and the guardians were very patient as they stood by our side until we finished taking our group photos. It was interesting to see the variety of trees, each one planted by a different president or leader from around the world. If you want to visit there, make sure to purchase your tickets earlier online. Highly recommended!

The Rideau Hall tour in Ottawa was a fantastic experience. The abundance of artistic portraits provided a captivating glimpse into Canada's history. The premises were impeccably maintained, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail. The knowledgeable tour guide expertly led us through, making the 45-50 minutes both informative and engaging. The decoration and intricate details throughout the hall were nothing short of amazing, truly adding depth to the tour's experience. Overall, a highly recommended visit for anyone seeking a blend of art, history, and remarkable craftsmanship. There was no parking in the premises so had to park in the adjacent streets.

Rideau Hall is an interesting place in Ottawa, being the official residence of the Governor General. It is used for various official function. There is a guided tour every 2 hours providing a glimpse of the hall and its stories. Check with the people at the tentage by the road leading to the hall for timing. The ground is big and there is a small garden. There is a side entrance by MacKay Street and you may be able to find a place to park.

Nice spot to walk the grounds , play sports or lounge. Lots of history on the site, both the gardens and the guided tours. Well worth checking out. Good spot for a picnic or simply a weekend stroll. The guided tour has plenty of information regarding the Governor Generals of Canada as well as the Prime Ministers.

Really interesting! You have to pre-book your free tickets online. And there is free street parking close as well. You get a tour of the major important rooms inside the hall. The outside of rideau hall and gardens requires no ticket. Just walk in and enjoy! Beautiful gardens!!

Beautiful place with plenty of spots to relax. Guided tours are free and take about 45 min, but the tour guide seemed a bit rushed and was hard to understand at times. Tours take you on very few rooms - I was hoping to see the greenhouses as I had seen other people go to them but I guess they are not always open to the public.

The gardens are wonderful to stroll through, even though it was the middle of October. Of course it was disappointing that we could not tour inside the Governor Generals home due to covid. Also the fountain in front of the home seems to be under repairs, as is most of the federal buildings in Ottawa. Still worth visiting this important landmark in our history

Rideau Hall is again one of those places which is a must visit for anyone visiting Ottawa. There are free guided tours available. No registration is required on weekends and walk ins are fine, there are tours every 30 min. Our experience was awesome. It is a nice way to learn a lot about the Rich Canadian History. There is no parking available and we have to use street parking which is free. The tour duration is 45 minutes.

Park has a lot of trees planted by leaders from all parts of the world. Here is nice wooden playground for children and two fontains. Unfortunately, at this moment they are closed. This place is worth visiting. Historical park in the middle of the city.

Great grounds for walking or biking. Tours of the house are quick and cool to see, usually going every 30 min no sign up required. The gardens are very nice (only open during open door days). Free street parking on MacKay street.

The outdoor gardens are a let-down and the portraits are amateurish. The greenhouse is well done though. Don't expect a cup of tea - there is no cafe (or public washrooms). We don't get much for $10M/yr....

I was able to reach Rideau Hall easily by bus and spent a beautiful, relaxing afternoon, begnning with a walk through the grounds, which are dotted with trees donated by presidents and other dignitaries, a rose garden, and a great life-size "inukshuk" statue. Following that was a very interesting tour of the house provided by a well-informed and enthusiastic guide, and a small but impressive changing of the guard ceremony accompanied by bagpipes. The gift shop, located near the main entrance provided a nice selection of quality Canadian-made items as well as books about Rideau Hall and Canadian history. I would highly recommend a visit to Rideau Hall for a respite from the more hectic Parliament Hill and an intimate view of Canadian history.
