Looks well maintained and peaceful. It is a must see location for visitors both from the state and outsiders. Enjoyed some time inside. Good play area for kids. Must improve maintenance. Lazer show has been stopped it seems as the facilities remain in bad shape

One of the most famous tourist spots in Patna. Golghar is a masterpiece of ancient construction that used to be storage of the grains in those times. The structure is huge and unfortunately, we can’t climb the stairs. The surrounded area is converted to the garden which is a perfect evening gateway. Evening time is the perfect time to visit this place.

During the Gupta Dynasty grains were stored in this huge granary. This is historical place located to the west of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, capital of Bihar state, India. Visitors cant climb to the top because of permission denied. While we went to see the ruins of Nalanda we were also fascinated by the granary. At the top you can view entire Patna city.

Golghar is a honour for Bihar. Made by British rulers in 20th July 1786. Best place for tourister and also for people live in Bihar. Less expensive place. Food stalls are also available here. Best place to take photo and spend time. Come one time in your life

According to a contemporary inscription at its base, the Golghar was intended to be just the first of a series of huge grain stores. In the end, however, no others were ever built. The granary was "part of a general plan … for the perpetual prevention of famine in these provinces" ordered in 1784 by Warren Hastings, the then Governor-General of India. The beehive-shaped structure was designed by Captain John Garstin of the Bengal Engineers, part of the East India Company's Bengal Army. Its construction was completed on 20 July 1786. A drive to improve the appearance of the structure was begun in 2002.

Golghar, completed in 1786 during the British East India Company's rule, was commissioned by Captain John Garstin. The granary was constructed in response to the devastating famine of 1770, with the intent of creating a storage facility capable of withstanding natural disasters and ensuring food security for the region. Golghar's architecture is a marvel of its time. The structure, resembling a beehive, is made of brick and mortar and stands at a height of 29 meters. The design incorporates a unique spiral staircase that ascends around the exterior, leading to a panoramic viewing platform at the top. The primary purpose of Golghar was to store grain for the British Army and mitigate the impact of famines. The design, with its thick walls and ventilators, aimed to prevent the spoilage of stored grains by maintaining a cool interior. The strategic location near the Ganges River facilitated easy transportation of grain by boat. For tourists and history enthusiasts, Golghar offers a captivating journey into the historical narrative of Bihar. The guided tours and informative displays within the structure provide insights into its construction, purpose, and the historical context in which it emerged. The panoramic views from the top make the visit both educational and visually rewarding. Golghar in Bihar is not just a granary; it is a living testament to the resilience of communities in the face of historical challenges. My visit to this historical monument was an enlightening experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone eager to explore the intersection of history, architecture, and the societal impact of such monumental structures.

One of Famous and Historic Monuments of Bihar. Most of Tourists Visit to take a glance of this. And in Evening it also have Fountain View which looks Amazing. The top of the Golghar presents a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Ganges. Built in the Stupa architecture, the building has a height of 29 m. It is pillar-less with a wall of thickness of 3.6 m at the base. One can climb at the top of the Golghar through the 145 steps of its spiral stairway around it. The spiral staircase was designed to facilitate the passage of the workers who loaded and unloaded the grain in the granary, who had to carry grain-bags up one flight, deliver their load through a hole at the top, and descend the other stairs.

Golghar is a well-known historical granary located in Patna, Bihar, India. Here are some key pieces of information about Golghar: 1. Architecture: Golghar is an impressive round building with a diameter of 125 meters and a height of 29 meters. It is made of brick walls, which are about 3.6 meters thick. The granary has a unique design with no pillars or beams supporting its structure. 2. Purpose: Golghar was built by the British in 1786 as a grain storage facility to address the recurring famines that affected the region. It was intended to store surplus grains during times of abundance to prevent food shortages during times of scarcity. 3. History: The construction of Golghar was initiated by Captain John Garstin, an engineer working for the British East India Company. The building was completed in 1786 after nearly five years of construction. However, Golghar's intended purpose of storing grains was never fully realized as the doors were mistakenly built in such a way that they could not be opened. 4. Viewpoint: The top of Golghar offers a panoramic view of the city of Patna and the nearby Ganges River. Visitors can climb a series of around 145 steps to reach the top and enjoy the breathtaking view. It has become a popular tourist spot due to its unique architectural design and the picturesque surroundings. 5. Park and Picnic Spot: The surrounding area of Golghar has been developed as a park, making it an ideal spot for picnics and leisure activities. The park offers various recreational facilities such as boating, horse riding, and toy train rides, making it a favored destination for families. 6. Events and Festivals: Golghar is occasionally used as a venue for cultural events, fairs, and festivals. It is particularly significant during the Chhath Puja festival, a major celebration dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, where devotees gather around the building to offer prayers and partake in rituals. 7. Importance in History: Golghar has witnessed and survived several significant historical events, including the Great Famine of 1770, where millions of people died due to a severe food shortage. Golghar stands as a reminder of the past and the efforts made to prevent such catastrophes. Overall, Golghar is a historically significant and visually captivating landmark, attracting tourists, history enthusiasts, and locals alike. Its unique architecture, panoramic views, and recreational facilities make it a must-visit destination while exploring Patna.

The place has a significant importance in history but it is not maintained as a historical place. It was sad to see that we cannot climb to the top of the structure and There are lots of things people have written on the building that they should not. Government needs to look after the place and bring the glory back to it at last I love this place.

Bihar Tourism should make a note of this. Such a beautiful historic site is going in ruins. The site is not maintained at all, with broken sinks, disposed off coolers, dried up pool and fountains this place is an absolute turn off. All I could only see couples in masks using this site as a cheap getaway. Please for the sake of history do something starting with increasing the ticket prices from historic Rs 10.

The government has now made the park very beautiful. Today, this building is famous as a tourist site. But if you turn the pages of history, you will know that this building was used for storing grains. It is one of the most attractive and enchanting historical buildings of Patna city, Golghar is one of the picturesque places of Patna city because of its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty.

Yet to ascend its peak, but certainly observed it quite closely like any other passerby. Quite historic, it still stands as a witness to many changes taken place over 200 years. When it got constructed back in 1786, river Ganga used to flow beside it. This itself indicates the amount of changes it has witnessed. Its dome shaped architecture is quite eye catching.

To visit this place from Patna Junction you can take auto upto Ghandi Maidan...and then 250m walking distance. And from Mithapur Bus stand it is better to take Toto/E-Rikshaw upto Ghandi Maidan. Now this place is not so much attractive because Govt. Is not allowing to go to the top portion and not inside Golghar. Out side of Golghar is well maintained and a small garden is there for kids. And inside water tank is there but no drinking water is available. Now ticket price is Rs. 5.00

It is built in an open decorated garden. It is located near Gandhi Maidan. One of the historical place in Patna which is must see structure. You can get a nice view of river Ganges from its roof top. Entry fee for this place is Rs 10 per person.Golghar is actually a huge grain storage. It was built after problem of food in 1934 in Bihar. It is very giant in size but now the condition is not good enough.Laser show on life of Samrat Ashoka is amazing. Headphones are used for the show to avoid echo. Seats are cushioned and comfortable. Inside the Golghar temperature is naturally air-conditioned. A must visit place in Patna.

Golghar of Patna is one of the most popular and ancient tourist place of Bihar. It was built by Britishers as a Store room for grains, wheat and foods etc. It is just a large room with round shape. On upper face of this there is a big hole to store grains and foods. It is very high, that's why it has above 150 steps stairs to reach at top. From the top of Golghar we can see almost All over Patna. This is near by Gandhi Maidaan. Many of foreign visitors visit here. This tourist place is one of the most oldest building of British rule, which was build in around 1750s.

    (Translated by Google) Golghar is located to the west of Gandhi Maidan in Patna, the capital of Bihar province. About one crore people died of starvation during the severe drought in 1770. The then Governor-General Warren Hastings had planned to construct the Golghar, the British engineer Captain John Garstin started the construction of the circular structure on 20 January 1784 for the storage of Anaz (for the British Army). Its construction was completed on 20 July 1786 under the British Raj. It can hold 140,000 tonnes of grains simultaneously. Its size is 125 meters and height is 29 meters. It has no pillar and its walls are 3.6 meters thick in the base. Stones have been used in place of brick for about three meters on the summit of Golghar. A hole two feet 7 inches in diameter at the top of the Golghar was left to pour grain, which was later filled. With 145 steps, you can go to the upper end from where a large part of the city can be seen and the beautiful view of the Ganges can be seen from here. Patna is the best and Manmohan visual golghar of the city. On climbing over it, the view of the picturesque Ganges is seen (Original)

Awesome experience, I must say one can see a glance of our past by visiting this historical monument. To preserve it for next generation, it is not allowed to step up to the top of Golghar, however stairs are there. A bit sad, but not to worry. It would be worth it. Do visit the place whenever you're near Gandhi Maidan or Ashok Rajpath. It's located just behind the Biskomaan Bhawan. To get here, you can take any bus or auto service up to Gandhi Maidan and then take a walk for about 5 mins. Trust me, you'll enjoy the walking environment as the road is quite near to Goddess River Ganga jee. All kind of Local City Buses, Government & Private, Intercity and even to other districts & states, one can easily find a bus service here at Gandhi Maidaan. It'll take only 1-2 hours to visit the Ancient Granary - The Golghar, if you're running short on time. There is an entrance ticket provision for visiting the Golghar, which is currently set to INR 10/-. Just a little price for watching a piece of history books in front of you. Don't miss it. Enjoy.

One of the heritage point of Patna. Seeing at the Golghar remind me of my childhood when me and my brother use to do competition to climb quickly. Even at this point of my age I love the site of ganga passing from of this arctictrural marvel. Though the ganaga doesn't look the same as my childhood. For me this place will be always connect my identity with Patna where I am born and brought up.

One of the most famous think of patna 😲 beautiful field area . And if you have time so don't miss light show 😉 i knew from somewhere that Golghar, an enormous granary, was built by Captain John Garstin for British army in 1786, after the terrible impact of 1770 famine. The winding stairway around this monument offers a brilliant view of the city and the Ganga flowing nearby. It is pillar-less with a wall of thickness of 3.6 m at the base height of 29 m..

On 11 January 2024 i visited Bihar's stately heritage Golghar which is located west part of Gandhi maidan, Patna (the capital city of Bihar state) , India. Golghar is one of the largest granary in round shape which is symbolised as a stupas, it is on 2.5 km from patna junction and it takes around 25 to 30 minutes through walk and nearly 10 minutes through public transports. History The purpose of construction of Golghar comes after the Bengal great famine 1770 which spread throughout contemporary Bihar (that time part of Bengal, British India) in this disaster approximately seven to ten million people died, to avoid this kind of massive famine again British India company decided to build Granary where grains can be stored for future survival later, the beehive or stupas - shaped structure was introduced by captain John Garstin he was an engineer of the East India company's Bengal army and construction was completed on 20 July 1786. The construction of Golghar was a part of a general plan for the everlasting prevention of famine in these provinces. (contemporary Bihar) However, the full capacity of grains could never filled inside the storage because Some visitors have claimed that the reason for this is designed of the structure whereby the doors are designed to open inwards; thus, if it is filled to its maximum capacity, then the doors will not open. However, visitors have found that the doors open outwards too. In tradition Some say nowadays Golghar is considered a milestone to its kinda structure and became one of the historical touchstone constructed by European, hundreds of people visit every day to see this amazing structure of granary the maintenance works of this structure done by Bihar Government which is also responsible for promoting Golghar as touristic place in Bihar, one can reach at the top following 145 staircase, from the top one can see the beautiful views of Patna City along with holiest Ganga river. FAQs 1. Is it allowed to reach at top? > No, because of security reasons and gate remain closed all the time. 2. What is the prize of ticket? > 10 rupees per person 3. Is it open every day? > Except Monday (Monday closed) 4. Is there particular playground for children? > Yes , ofcourse

Situated in the city of Patna, Golghar is a simple yet charming architecture which is an amalgam of history and natural beauty. It was built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin with the purpose of serving as a storehouse. Incidentally, Golghar was never filled to its maximum capacity as it is believed that due to an engineering fault the doors open inwards only, and if the granary were to be filled all the way, the doors will not open. In addition to being a magnanimous granary, the top of Golghar presents a wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Ganges. Owing to its peaceful location and sublime natural setting, Golghar is one of the many spots in the city which citizens visit to get a respite from the din of the cityy

You may just go and relax in the park which is just ok... There's nothing you can spend time there for more than 20 minutes hardly

Its a good place to visit and its lovely to see our old monument built by our ancestors and the britishers. Many historical monument are stronger then todays monument and buildings. It's cost ₹10 entriey fee for unlimited time for a day. And Don't act like nibba nibii on that campus because it has small ground where everybody will see you.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Golghar in Patna, and it left me absolutely awestruck. This historical landmark is a true gem and a testament to India's rich heritage. It's not just an architectural marvel but also an embodiment of the city's spirit and history. Golghar, which means "Round House," lives up to its name with its distinctive shape and imposing presence. The structure, designed by Captain John Garstin in 1786, was constructed to store grain during times of famine. Standing tall at a height of 29 meters and with a base circumference of 125 meters, Golghar is an imposing figure that dominates the landscape.

This was a Historical place so it needs to be open and showcased for normal people so all can know the art and architecture details of the British era.Presently the only park nearby is open until 6 PM. Ticket price is 10/- for Indian.

  • 4/5 nitish k. 8 months ago on Google
Golghar, an enormous granary, was built by Captain John Garstin for British army in 1786, after the terrible impact of 1770 famine. The winding stairway around this monument offers a brilliant view of the city and the Ganga flowing nearby.

  • 3/5 Anjan C. 5 months ago on Google
240 years old structure. Surrounding ambience is cool. It would have been better if permission provided for entry within Golghar building. Now it can be seen from outside only

Was nice but only for park visiting because now they don't allow you to stair up to top it's prohibited. Yeah but one can explore the beauty of that park providing you pleasure and relaxation
