The
Catholic
basilica
is
situated
in
a
faraway
Colombo
suburb,
about
23
kilometers
from
the
international
airport.
In
reference
to
its
location,
some
locals
call
it
Thewaththa
Church,
Thewaththa
National
Shrine,
Basilica
of
our
lady
of
Lanka,
while
some
just
call
it
Basilica
Ragama.
The
current
basilica
was
started
in
February
of
1950,
but
it
wasn't
finished
until
February
of
1974,
the
same
year
that
it
was
dedicated.
Its
feast
day
is
February
4,
which
is
also
Sri
Lanka
National
Day.
This
pilgrimage
site's
history
dates
back
to
1911,
when
a
little
chapel
was
first
constructed
by
a
local
priest,
Fr.
A.
Kieger,
along
with
a
few
devoted.
This
location
sees
thousands
of
pilgrims
each
year,
and
it
is
regarded
as
Sri
Lanka's
most
well-liked
church.
