In
July
of
2016,
I
was
a
new
patient
at
Cano
Health,
specifically
to
Dr.
Marlow
Hernandez.
My
new
patient
experience
was
underwhelming
at
best,
and
fell
under
the
usual
category
of
being
lengthy
as
with
many
new
patient
visits,
due
to
paperwork
needing
to
be
filled
out
and
what
not.
However,
this
visit
took
longer
than
usual
because
of
the
incompetence
and
disorganization
of
the
front
office
staff.
To
give
a
quick
idea,
the
in-network
confirmation
process
took
almost
two
hours,
which
I
had
to
step
in
and
facilitate
personally.
Of
course,
I
had
to
reschedule
the
checkup.
My
second
visit
was
better,
from
the
front
office
standpoint,
as
well
as
from
the
standpoint
of
the
opportunity
to
be
seen
by
Dr.
Hernandez.
My
first
impression
of
Dr.
Hernandez
was
a
poor
one
and
that
of
the
stereotypical,
no-it-all
physician
with
a
God
complex.
Our
interaction
was
formal
and
scripted,
as
with
most
new
patient
visits,
but
this
new
patient
visit
was
particularly
distressing.
Dr.
Hernandez
seemed
like
he
was
putting
on
a
show
and
came
across
as
insincere
and
disinterested.
I
felt
like
Dr.
Hernandez
was
not
intentionally
listening
and
failed
to
grasp
my
patient
history.
His
disposition,
assumptions,
and
conclusions
were
uncomfortably
orthodox,
which
in
hindsight,
is
common
for
a
person
with
an
unwavering
belief
of
infallibility
and
delusions
of
grandeur
(God
complex).
Little
did
I
know
things
would
get
worse.
He
ordered
several
tests,
which
I
was
led
to
believe
the
clinic
had
the
capacity
to
conduct
in-house,
but
would
later
learn
were
outsourced.
I
expressed
to
Dr.
Hernandez
my
concern
of
the
costs
of
such
tests
exceeding
my
deductible.
He
assured
me
not
to
worry,
that
his
office
would
cover
any
balance
due
or
additional
costs
not
covered
by
my
insurance
company
(In
hindsight,
I
should
have
digitally
recorded
this
declaration
or
asked
for
a
written
and
signed
statement
saying
so).
A
few
months
later
I
get
a
notice
from
a
collections
agency
regarding
a
balance
due
to
Quest
Diagnostics,
the
creditor
and
testing
lab
Dr.
Hernandez
outsourced
my
tests
to
because
lo
and
behold,
the
Cano
Health
clinic
did
not
have
the
capacity
to
perform
the
tests
in-house.
I
have
since
embarked
on
a
game
of
monkey-in-the-middle
–
me
being
the
monkey
–
with
Cano
Health
(Dr.
Hernandez’s
office),
my
insurance
company,
Quest
Diagnostics,
and
the
collections
agency,
all
of
which
refuse
to
do
their
jobs
in
clarifying
the
miscommunication
and
misunderstanding,
or
at
the
very
least,
provide
adequate
advice
and
guidance
to
resolve
the
issue.
I
do
not
recommend
Dr.
Hernandez
nor
any
doctor
working
under
the
Cano
Health
organization.
Given
this
experience
and
the
current
state
of
the
U.S.
healthcare
industry,
I
will
forever
be
extra
vigilant
when
conducting
business
with
the
healthcare
industry.
