Deceptively bigger than it first appears, with plenty on offer if you take the time to really look into every space. My son really enjoyed it, and the animals didn't seem maltreated or under stimulated. They all had plenty of food and seemed very active.

Was nice to see the animals but would of been great if they done some sort of walk around tour explaining about the animals background, some general facts, how they were rescued etc. Was no shop on site to offer food or refreshments so call into a shop before you visit as its in a very rural area.

We had a really nice time here. Some of the reviews on here are off putting but we decided to decide for ourselves and so glad we did :) We had a lovely welcome from the lady at the ticket office - good amount of parking. Its bigger than it looks on arrival and we felt the animals had a decent amount of space to play. There are plenty of picnic tables around for a pit stop or picnic. A small selection of drinks are available to buy. There are signs on some of the animals on their amazing / sad journeys. Please do remember, this is a sanctuary and these amazing animals have been rescued - its not a zoo, so don't expect frills or theme rides... just enjoy their beauty and the fact they are safe and your ticket money is helping this charity. Keep up the good work all! Well worth the visit! ❤️ * flat and doable with pushchair *please don't take your dogs as it causes distress to some of the animals (as we witnessed for ourselves)

What an amazing place to visit. Makes sad reading as to how the animals got there, but you can see how well all the animals are looked after . It's a must for anyone in the area

Great to be able to support this little charity. If you're going to visit, it is a little off the main road, but not too difficult to find. Set aside half a day to have a wonder around, take a picnic if you like too. The animals are close enough for my toddler to remain interested and it is a shame I didn't take more photos. Definitely visit and help support the operational costs of taking care of the animals.

They do great work at Wales Ape & Monkey sanctuary and need all the help they can get. The weather wasn't very kind when we were there but the staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities were clean.

A little run down but still a great experience for the kids. The lady that came out to the car park to check tickets could do with a freshen up on manners. But literally our only grumble. Ourselves and the children enjoyed our walk around. Have lost the one star due to a cold welcome.

Great place to visit. Have visited here many times when I travel to South Wales from the USA. They really care for the animals, this you can see. I’m glad they are expanding. We tried out the buggy rides to see the highland cows, that was fun and new.

Myself and my partner decided to do a last minute visit.....we are so glad we did!!!! It's a brilliant run sanctuary all the animals are so well cared for and look very happy living there best lives now! The staff are the friendliest people, we had a chat with most of them throughout the day as we wandered around. They have great picnic areas throughout the park, plenty of places to sit and enjoy the animals around you while you eat. I would highly recommend a visit it's a great day out for all ages.

Lovely afternoon visit the staff are friendly. The work they do here is amazing and will definitely be returning missed the new ride to visit the Highland cows by a day. Plenty of seating areas for picnics and a small shop that helps raise funds to run the sanctuary.

My grandson loved this place. Especially the larger chimps, Nikita with her purple blanket wrapped around her and then there is one who signs to talk to you. There are some rescued dogs here too and a couple of wolves. Everything goes towards keeping the animals too. Its not very big but we were here for nearly two hours so it was worth the money.

Great morning out at a lovely animal rescue sanctuary. Nice to see these wonderful animals being looked after and treated well. The buggy ride to see the Highland cows is worth it too. Lovely to support a fantastic cause.

The sanctuary itself you could probably walk around within 20-30mins, there is nothing to overwhelming and seems compact. But, it was still enjoyable. Some of the monkeys were quite sad, or seemed it. I think with places like this, it's important to remember it's a sanctuary first, and not necessarily a zoo. I think for an hour or two out it's good.

Cute secluded little sanctuary with a massive purpose, each of their residents has their own little personalities from kaiser the dog to toto the incredible gorilla. Would spend all day here rain or shine. There is a huge secondhand book shop in the reception aswell. If you have a book addiction here is the place for it.

The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is a hidden gem tucked away in the rolling hills of Caehopkin, Abercrave. As soon as you enter the sanctuary, you are greeted by the sounds of the resident primates, including macaques, marmosets, and capuchins. The sanctuary offers a safe and secure environment for these animals, who have been rescued from a variety of situations, including the exotic pet trade and the entertainment industry. The staff at the sanctuary are passionate about animal welfare and work tirelessly to ensure that each primate is healthy, happy, and well-cared for. Visitors can take a guided tour of the sanctuary, where they can learn about the individual stories of each primate and the work that goes into caring for them. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have. In addition to the primate sanctuary, the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary also has a small animal rescue centre, where you can meet some of the resident rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals. There is also a gift shop, where you can purchase souvenirs and support the sanctuary's ongoing work. Overall, the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is a wonderful place to visit for animal lovers of all ages. The dedication of the staff and the love they have for the animals is evident in everything they do, and it is heart warming to see the animals thriving in their care.

Heart-warming experience visiting the Sanctuary. We adopt a Wolf here, Zebb, and its great to meet the workers who have rescued and cared for these animals. Would recommend a visit to see the animals. There's refreshments and a gift shop there too.

Beautiful place to visit. Your money for the ticket goes to looking after these beautiful animals at this sanctuary. The ticket prices are very reasonable. Really friendly staff. Love the new paths. Iv been here multiple times and will happily be returning soon There is no cafe or food to buy on site but cold drinks are available to buy. There are picnic benches around the park. There is a little gift shop too 🥰

It's disappointing to see such negative reviews on here from people who assume they're going to some sort of adventure playground or safari park! It's a sanctuary for rescused/abused animals, mainly monkeys, that survives on donations. The admission fee is fairly priced, less than a tenner! Considering the cost of these enclosures, food, vetinary procedures etc - they're not exactly making a profit off the public. The place isn't massive but we easily spent 3 hours here as we spent time at each enclosure and the animals were all fairly interactive once you stayed there awhile. Especially the wolves who enjoyed charging up to the glass and jumping at me 😂 perfect day out for true animal lovers! Staff were extremely friendly and polite and even though I am exempt from wearing a face covering, once they explained it was for the protection and safety of the apes, I was more than happy to oblige and they pointed out the places where it was okay to take it off if I needed too.

Lovely place for a quick visit and not too expensive. Some animals inside with rain and cold but still nice to go around. No food or snacks on site but coffee machine and a place to stop. Good selection of animals but we didn't see as many as website portrays. We will be going back. Family of 4 (one is under 3) cost £22 total

Great place, staff were friendly and helpful, there were lots of animals to see who came out to say hello, my 2 boys loved it there and are already asking when they can go next. Had a little shop where you could but souvenirs and snacks and drinks. the only thing that was a let down was the one toilet. They also had a 2nd hand shop there which had to good stuff in. Highly recommend going such a great place.

Visited today and thought it was a experience, chimps were the main attraction for us, I've seen some reviews saying how they look sad and depressed but I don't see how that comment makes sense I'm no expert but from what I've seen on TV the chimps in the wild don't look much happen haha, yes the conditions are not perfect but they're far from poor, be real they're in captivity at the end of the day never going to be perfect unless they're in the wild and can you even say they're perfect condition these days, but I do think it's worth going too see though we did enjoy ourselves and I think there is good intent with this sanctuary. We will definitely be back.

A nice place for a short visit to see some monkeys. I took my kids and we spent about an hour watching the animals. It's a little like going to someone's house who has a lot of monkeys in their garden. They looked well looked after and happy. Worth the ticket fee that supports the sanctuary. It would have been nice to have a cafe on site and for some of the equipment and disused kit to be hidden out of public view but overall a nice visit.

Loved this place! It would be even better if there was a child's play area ... loads of picnic beaches for a sit down and something to eat.. fantastic value for families .

Not a big place, but me and my kids enjoyed every minute. Nice place to spend an hour or two with your family and kids. We have seen meerkats, talking parrots, wolfs and a lot of different monkeys.

I took my 3 grandsons and they thoroughly enjoyed. Toto the chimpanzee was such a character and they enjoyed interacting with him as well as the others. We sat at a picnic table and had our picnic. Enjoyable couple of hours.

We visited the sanctuary today and had a lovely afternoon there. It was so nice to be able watch the animals and see how well they are looked after. The staff were very friendly especially a male volunteer that we spoke with. He was so passionate about what he was doing and took time to explain to us about the different animals and their history. We will definitely visit again.

This was my 3rd visit to the Sanctuary and I always come away with the greatest respect and admiration for all the staff involved who look after and nurture these wonderful animals. I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Jason... What a character. This time I took my 5 year old granddaughter who absolutely loved her time there. She particularly fell in love with Kaiser, the wolf dog and of course the old lady chimp, Nakima who covers herself in the purple blanket.... Who wouldn't... We love her... So much to see there. Thank you all so very much. It was great to see so many people on Saturday, meaning more funds to help the Sanctuary. I have now set up a DD to help.... I hope that anyone reading this will also help, no matter how small the contribution, be it financial or volunteering... I'll be back soon...

My son & I visited the sanctuary last Friday. We were on the Zookeeper for the Day experience. It was fantastic from beginning to end; Nicola, the zoologist at the sanctuary accompanied and shared her considerable knowledge with us whilst the rest of the staff were friendly and passionate about what they do. The level of care for the animals was humbling and the consequent bonds built with each and every one of them was amazing to see A really wonderful day for all ages. We were told that the zookeeper day is going to be replaced by other exciting new experiences. Whatever you choose be it one of these experiences or simply spending a day meeting the animals, a visit to the sanctuary is an incredible experience filled with lots of fun.

A lovely opportunity to spend a couple of hours visiting the animals and a laudable project aimed at improving their lives and educating humans. A little scruffy but I suspect the focus is on the animals rather than the surroundings. Very reasonably-priced and worth a visit.

This is an amazing place, the animals are clearly looked after, we had a wonderful day, reading about all the animals, how sad what happened to them, but now they are enjoying life, the sanctuary always needs donations, thank you for a great day 😀

  • 4/5 Mark T. 10 months ago on Google
We enjoyed our visit here. It will take one hour to walk around but with small excited children you can stretch it to two hours. You cannot feed any of the animals due to their dietary requirements. All animals are kept at a safe distance from anyone trying to touch them by fences with approximately three meter plus gaps. *NOTE* Wheel chair users may struggle to get around by themselves due to the pathways. It would be advisable to contact the sanctuary and ask staff directly regarding wheel chair accessibility. Drinks and snacks available on site from the shop. They have a vintage clothing floor above the shop mainly for women ranging from toe to head plus a few really nice wedding dresses. Also for women there is a room literally full of handbags, purses, hats, heels and scarfs but mainly handbags. Overall its well worth dropping by and enjoying the experience.

  • 5/5 James W. 2 years ago on Google
Been a few times. Not really a place to spend all day, but you can see the animals are cared for. Wolves in particular go from big and scary to puppy like when the keepers are there.

  • 1/5 Thomas S. 7 months ago on Google • 2 reviews
Worse than a zoo. Cages are far too small and I feel so sorry for the animals kept in these prisons. Maybe instead of buying range rovers with private licence plates you could make adequate space for the animals in your "care". Look at this cage for example. Why is there so much grass and wasted space outside of it. The cage could have been so much bigger. This feels like more of a business than a sanctuary. I wish I'd never given my money to you people. Seeing the wolf pace round its small enclosure for the duration of my visit was heartbreaking. After reading other reviews, I'm shocked to see the owners response. Maybe instead of attacking your customers' opinions, you could open your eyes and improve the welfare of these animals.
