We stayed for 4 nights here in the heart of historic George Town. The prices are good and the hosts are friendly and very competent, going out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. We booked our onwards travel to KL through the hostel, and they lent us some Ringgit and allowed us to pay after our first night when they realised we didn't have any after arriving from Thailand. The water is cheap (2RM for 1.5l) and the beer is reasonable, with a really nice social space to sit, drink and chat. The breakfast is toast and tea/coffee, and there's a good range of spreads, but they could do with some creamer/milk. The space feels very secure, featuring electronic locks. Loses a star because although the beds in the dorm are very comfy, the mattresses in both the double and twin rooms are horrendously springy and made sleeping difficult. The design of the double room was also really weird... If someone was sitting on toilet or showering, they could see the head of the bed through the glass shower partition! I would stay here again for sure, but would probably book back into the dorm.

Very social hostel and great vibes. Everyone is so friendly and nice. They organize many activities and the location is perfect. The only hostel I would recommend in Penang!

Had a great stay here. The highlight was the friendly staff and great location. Staff and owner were always willing to help or have a chat. The common area is a weird shape being long and thin and dominated by a bar but it was still good to meet people or use a laptop if you could find a space. There's also a small outside area with seats which was good to chat to other travellers. I should note that the owner said they were changing the common area layout soon. Dorms had semi open wooden walls which meant the noise from the corridor came through easily but other guests were mostly quiet while I was there so it didn't bother me. Nice hot showers. As usual, not enough hooks but the owner said they would be installing some more soon.

Really rude people who volunteer there. No control of their guests. People were running around at 3am very drunk and shouting each night I stayed. The staff who volunteer there were having s*x with the guests in the dorms in the middle of the day. Very disrespectful. Stayed here 3 nights and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Also about 10 people volunteering there, they spend more time drinking and socialising than helping their guests or even acknowledging their existence. The blonde English girl was very nice and helpful. Everyone else was very rude.

Room was the size of a closet, and bathroom is as dirty as Penang itself. Seriously, I WOULD SKIP PENANG IF I WERE YOU. There is one block of clean streets and cute little shops, but the majority of the island is filthy and the beaches aren’t very nice. The food is overrated and you will find better Indian cuisine in Kuala Lumpur. If I could go back I would not spend any time in penang, but if you already have your flight booked and want a cheap place to stay, then this place is ok.

A great experience there. We were really welcomed and guided through every adventure nearby. The best showers I had for months. Good mood and support for every issue I had. I will definitely come back here. Big recommendation! Alida knows everything!

They have the best internet i used to far. SO fast and it works everywhere in the hostel it’s perfect if you have to work. The location is so central + hawkers in front of the hostel every night. Penang is great because you can take the bus to go everywhere, and you can reach all the lines stops within 5min walk from the hostel. The place was clean & the staff friendly. Definitely would come again.

I was happy with the location, common areas and beds. Can be a little noisy at night, but free tea/coffee all day, and included breakfast made up for it. Great showers too

Cool hostel, nice volunteers, good vibe. If you're looking for a social hostel in Georgetown, this would be the one. Also, they have a free water dispenser which dispenses ice cold water, so even if I contracted malaria at this hotel I would still give it 5 stars (I didn't). In a perfect world there would be curtains for the beds and the showers would have shower gel stocked, but we don't live in a perfect world.

Social, fun, and comfortable hostel with a great location. The volunteers who help run the hostel had such welcoming and fun attitudes. The daily activities helped make the hostel feel very social and engaging. Plus the rooms are simple, comfortable, and have lockers. Highly recommend!

Looks different than in the pictures. Rooms are tiny and extremely noisy due to the flimsy thin walls and windows that cannot close properly. Beds are good. Very social.

Such a good hostel! All the volunteers are the absolute best: Shannon, Nathan Monster & Isa. Ps: shannon i love you

Great hostel, cold aircon, amazing atmosphere, clean place and amazing showers. Really enjoyed the activities, especially that they did not all revolve around drinking. Easy to meet people and great staff

Enjoyed my stay very much. A great social hostel! You quickly find contact and have a good time. The beds and rooms are not the best but the staff is unbeatable! Had a lot of fun and will be happy to come back. I also found travel partners with whom I am still on the road.

Had a great stay, quite a sociable hostel with activities everyday that you can join in on which are good fun. All the volunteers were really friendly and welcoming and helped out with any issues but there weren’t really any for me personally. Alida did a great job managing everything whilst i was there 👌🏼 would recommend.

I had a very nice stay in this hostel. Even though it has been a while since I have been there, I have wonderfull memories. The staff was so kind and even helped me to get back my bag when I accendentaly left it there and thought I would never see it again. Also a great location and comfortable rooms. In conclusion: definitely would reccomend.

Went in trying to book for the weekend; guy at reception (caucasian with long hair) informed us they had availability but that we (gf and I) could probably find better elsewhere. He insisted we check all the other options in town, and said we could come back as a last resort. Literally turning away clients? Not to mention he didn’t lift his head or acknowledge we were there for a solid 3-4 mins. Worst first impression of the place and bad vibes.

Thank you Cheryl and Raisun (sorry if spelt incorrectly) for a lovely stay last month. You were both so knowledgeable, supportive and friendly beings. Thanks for the food recommendations and everything. I hope the hostel continues to grow as it deserves to. Hannah and Ghino, UK

Awesome place. Clean toilets, douches and beds. Good breakfast with coffee or tea. The hostel is located in the center of George Town and has a lovely staff. Slept in the dorm room, enough fans or ac, lockers in the room which was a plus as well. Only point of improvement is the wifi. Did not always work especially in the room. Overall we had a great experience at House of Journey and would really recommened it.

Had a great stay! The staff is friendly, the rooms (dorms/washrooms/toilets) were clean and comfortable to use, we got to scrawl a message on the walls and staircase and see the artwork and messages left by people who stayed there previously. Also, we could find delicious food within walking distance of the hostel.

Great staff, good location, and plenty of street food around in the evening. VERY LOUD puppet shows (with a "band") both nights we stayed here (W&Th) from ~8 to 10:45pm. Air conditioning/fan made the temperatures okay to sleep in.

Absolutely lovely hostel right off Chulia Street (really central). The showers are excellent and really hot, the beds are super comfy, and there's the Hawker Street Food market just one street over. I booked for one night and wound up staying for five! Would highly recommend! Also, Wei, the hostel's staff is super nice!

This is a great hostel. The beds are comfortable and the people are lovely. The location is top notch, right in the heart of George Town. I met so many great people here and there’s plenty to do. Discover some amazing f street art and food that’s nearby. Eat a cake from China House, get some Street food that’s on the Main Street. You won’t run out of options here!

Stayed 2 nights here. No frills comfortable space for staying in the heritage district of Penang. Safe space with electronic door access. The host Wei is very helpful, he will book you a bus ride to your next destination. Towels are available at cost of 5RM with an additional 20RM deposit. Laundry is also available and done off site charging by weight, it is a good deal compared to the nearby coin laundry.
